Tassa, who has also piloted adaptations of Shakespeare's Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night's Dream for AUS, added that in such works "there's a lot to be found and it tends to get stuck in a lot of productions in a very archaic form, so it's nice to see it in a new perspective." Sustainability efforts need to factor in economic complexities There’s a reason why it’s rare to see the terms economy and environmental sustainability sharing the same sentence, notes Dr Andrew Balthrop, American University of Sharjah (AUS) assistant professor of economics. While sustainability is a desirable concept and environmental protection is often essential, he says, these two goals can often conflict. Such a scenario calls for compromise and tradeoffs where possible, he says, adding: “It is important to implement environmental regulations and try to minimise the costs on those who bear them. “If no one was hurt by environmental regulations, then we would see a lot more of them,” says Balthrop, who observes that rules on sustainability do have the potential to hurt specific areas of an economy. “People like to think that many of the environmental problems we face have solutions that can be win-win. It’s great when that is the case, but those are the easy problems.” It is to be expected, according to Balthrop, that industrialisation damages the environment. Published on: Section: Page:

The power of six Super Lochal, a humorous film about an Emirati superheroine that addresses issues of empowerment, is screening at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. The all female team behind it tell Hala Khalaf why it is so close to their hearts When they get together for dinners, brunches and coffee, six creative young women who live in Sharjah and Dubai can usually be found engaged in ceaseless chatter. But it's not the latest gossip that dominates their gettogethers - it's the plot lines for their next film. Over just such a get-together the first Emirati superheroine, Hessa, was born, and the idea for their six-minute short, Super Lochal, began to take form. This week, Super Lochal is competing at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) as part of the Emirates Film Competition (EFC) alongside work from more than 50 filmmakers from the GCC. Lochal, continued from 1 They describe the story as a "dark comedy", and all six of them stress that it is a lighthearted take on a serious subject - one that is close to all their hearts. The women met five years ago at a film course while they were students of the College of Architecture, Arts and Design at the American University of Sharjah, and have been working together to cultivate their passion for filmmaking ever since.
