EAD holds inaugural Annual Sustainable Campus Conference As part of its Sustainable Campus Initiative, SCI, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, EAD, held on Monday the first-ever Annual Sustainable Campus Conference, "The Need for Mainstreaming Sustainability into Universities and Colleges", aimed at supporting mentors in universities to empower the next generation of green leaders. Ahmad Baharoon, Executive Director, Environmental Information, Science and Outreach Management, EAD, who also spoke at the event, commented, "The conference proved to be a melting pot for knowledge exchange. Based on its commitment to social responsibility and sustainability in the plastics industry, Borouge is pleased to actively support the mentors of the Sustainability Campus Initiative," said Abdulaziz Alhajri, CEO of Borouge. "The mentors play an important role in enablingthe students ofthe programme to understand and embed sustainability practices at their universities and also providing them with valuable knowledge that will enhance their future contribution to community and society." During an official launch of the initiative, five additional universities registered and pledged their continuous commitment to SCI, including the American University of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates University, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, the Petroleum Institute, and New York University Abu Dhabi. Police introduce security education in Sharjah's public schools Police have introduced a security education programme at public schools in Sharjah to ensure the safety of pupils. EAD holds inaugural Annual Sustainable Campus Conference As part of its Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI), Environment Agency -- Abu Dhabi (EAD) held the first-ever Annual Sustainable Campus Conference “The Need for Mainstreaming Sustainability into Universities and Colleges” at the Ritz Carlton in Abu Dhabi on February 9, 2015. The conference aims to support mentors in universities to empower the next generation of green leaders. Kindly sponsored by Borouge, a leading provider of innovative and creative plastic solutions, the conference brought together experts including lecturers and professors from various colleges and campuses across the United Arab Emirates. International experts introduced best practices from around the world including Arjen Wals (Europe), Akpezi Ogbuigwe (Africa), Peter Blaze Corcoran (USA), Hongwei Tan (Asia) and Bob Jickling (Canada). Panel discussions were held on the conference theme ‘The Need for Mainstreaming Sustainability into Universities & Colleges’ and on the ‘Current Status and Challenges in the UAE for Promoting Sustainability within Our Universities & Colleges’.Mentors from the nine registered universities in the SCI have been building capacity among youth on their campuses since its launch in November, 2014. The initiative provides an international platform to network and share ideas and best practices in addressing key environmental issues such as water scarcity, waste, energy, climate change and biodiversity, ultimately contributing to achieving a sustainable environment in the UAE. EAD launched SCI’s pilot phase with the participation of 100 students from four universities in Abu Dhabi including Zayed University, Higher Colleges of Technology- Women’s College in Khalifa City, Higher Colleges of Technology -- Men’s College in Madinat Zayed and Higher Colleges of Technology -- Women’s College in Ruwais. During an official launch of the initiative, five additional universities registered and pledged their continuous commitment to SCI and included the American University of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates University, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, the Petroleum Institute, and New York University Abu Dhabi have recently been added. SCI along with other initiatives and programmes adopted by EAD, are supported by not just the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, but also the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, Al Ain Distribution Company, and Tadweer (The Centre for Waste Management - Abu Dhabi).
