Peter Di Sabatino Dean, College of Architecture, Art and Design at the American University of Sharjah

Welcome to the fourth annual edition of the 6º catalog. This publication presents self-selected work from the graduating students of the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), and coincides with brief exhibitions of student work in galleries in Dubai. CAAD shares the vision of excellence and relevance in education, the arts, and culture of
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the American University of Sharjah. The graduating students will, and the alumni and faculty of the college continue to, shape the creative culture and advance the creative economy of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates, and the broader region. This assembly of student work references numerous disciplines, traditions, trajectories, cultures, and aspirations. It is a loose collection of projects bound by place (CAAD) and time (2014). It is a momentary sampling of interests, explorations, and fascinations on the minds of the current graduating class. Therefore, it is here that we find
a cross-section of creative expression that articulates a broad spectrum of ideas, scales, issues, mediums, paths, and processes. 6º may be read, understood or imagined in many ways. Is it a certain degree or increment of temperature? And is it therefore possibly about a degree of intensity? Does 6º represent or signify a grid-shift? Is it particular and precise? Perhaps 6º may allude to a point of view, or to a place in space. Is it a perspectival shift or location? Also, we currently offer six degrees at the College of Architecture, Art and Design. There are five undergraduate degrees and one graduate degree; specifically, they are in Urban Planning, Architecture, Interior Design, Visual Communication, Multimedia, and Design Management. We are discussing and planning for new possible degrees at the college. At the undergraduate level, these may include Product Design and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA). We are planning for graduate degrees in Architecture, and in Art and Design (MFA). Does this therefore represent a possible increase in intensity, a further shift of perspective, additional differentiation…? Does the temperature at CAAD increase? Will we possibly see later catalogues and exhibitions entitled 8º or 12º at CAAD? Each day at CAAD, we create meaning and identity through creative, intelligent, and skillful acts and processes. All of us at the college are very proud of our soon-to-be alumni, and extend our continuing support and high expectations. We all share the desire for the best future for our graduating students, as well as share in the appreciation of their time and efforts spent at the college and university. Thank you as well to all family members and friends, to the professional communities, to the administration, and to all staff and faculty members. Best of luck, thank you, and please stay in touch.

Plan Diagrams

The design /build acoustic wall installation grew out of an investigation of acoustic principles coupled with new fabrication techniques. A previous prototyping semester yielded a construction system that is based on curved folding in thin sheet steel that creates a self-structuring wall with a hollow core that holds sound absorbing material. The placement in the basement of AD-2 is intended to create a zone of less acoustically active space that will accommodate functions of pinup, gallery space, lectures and work space. It also provides a visual screen while still allowing for intermittent views from various levels in and around the atrium, thus preserving the openness and interconnectivity of the open studio.
