Ankabut holds Ninth Users' Meeting at American University of Sharjah Event is attended by over 400 representatives from higher education and education organizations in the UAE Sharjah, October 2, 2013 - Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ruler of Sharjah and President of American University of Sharjah (AUS), Ankabut, the UAE's Advanced Network for Research and Education, kicked off its Ninth Users' Meeting today at AUS. The meeting, which is being attended by representatives from 50 educational and higher education institutions, brought Ankabut's users together to discuss the latest updates in education, technology and research. AUS Acting Chancellor Dr. Thomas Hochstettler welcomed the audience to AUS. In his opening remarks, Dr. Hochstettler emphasized the importance of such conferences, which enhance collaboration among the UAE's educational institutions. Fahem Al Nuaimi, Chief Executive Officer of Ankabut, announced during the opening speech that several new initiatives will be offered by Ankabut to its members including unified communications and Eduroam. "Ankabut's users' meeting, which takes place twice a year, creates an opportunity for Ankabut to announce its latest services to the users in addition to creating a platform to share knowledge through renowned speakers and notable researchers in the fields of education and technology," said Al Nuaimi. The two-day event featured on its first day speakers such as Dr. Stephen Wolff, Chief Technology Officer of Internet2, who discussed the history and development of national research networks internationally. Also present was Dr. David Keyes, Dean of the Division of Mathematical and Computer Sciences and Engineering at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, who spoke about the importance of high performance computing in the GCC for developing today's and tomorrow's research agendas. Present as a second keynote speaker was Marci Powell, Global Director for Higher Education for Polycom, who spoke on the growing emergence of educational technology and distance education throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world. The meeting's breakout sessions also featured other speakers from the UAE higher education and technology community who discussed current activities in the fields of teaching, applications and research. Breakout sessions include important topics such as mobile learning in higher education, using the cloud for teaching and research, the importance and impact of a digital hub for the economic growth of the UAE, a disaster recovery plan over Ankabut, and research and graduate studies, among other topics that will benefit professionals and students alike. مستخدمي شبكة عنكبوت التاسع يفتتح اعماله في الجامعة األمريكية في الشارقة تحت رعاية الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي ،عضو المجلس األعلى حاكم الشارقة ورئيس الجامعة األميركية في الشارقة ،بدأت أعمال االجتماع التاسع لمستخدمي شبكة اإلمارات المتقدمة للتعليم والبحوث )عنكبوت( والذي تستضيفه الجامعة األمريكية في الشارقة في الفترة ما بين الثاني والثالث من شھر أكتوبر الحالي.
ويجتمع مستخدمو شبكة "عنكبوت" خالل االجتماع الذي يحضره ممثلون عن 50مؤسسة تعليمية لمناقشة آخر المستجدات في مجال التعليم والتكنولوجيا والبحوث. ورحب الدكتور توماس ھوكستيتلر مدير الجامعة األميركية في الشارقة بالوكالة باالجتماع متمنيا ً للحضور لقا ًء مثمراً .وأكد في كلمته االفتتاحية على أھمية مثل ھذه المؤتمرات في تسھيل التواصل وتبادل الخبرات بين مؤسسات التعليم العالي في الدولة. وفي كلمته ،كشف السيد فاھم النعيمي ،الرئيس التنفيذي لشبكة "عنكبوت" ،عن عدة مبادرات جديدة من قبل الشبكة ألعضائھا بما في ذلك االتصاالت الموحدة و"إديوروم". وقال" :يعد اجتماع المستخدمين الذي يقام مرتين في العام ،فرصة لـ 'عنكبوت' لتعلن عن أحدث خدماتھا للمستخدمين باإلضافة إلى خلق منصة لتبادل المعرفة وحضور محاضرات لمتحدثين وباحثين متميزين من كافة أنحاء العالم في مجاالت التعليم والتكنولوجيا". يشارك في االجتماع الذي يستمر لمدة يومين متحدثين مثل الدكتور ستيفن وولف ،الرئيس التنفيذي للتكنولوجيا لشبكة "إنترنت"2 والذي تحدث عن تاريخ وتطور شبكات البحوث الوطنية حول العالم ،كما حاضر أيضا ً الدكتور ديفيد كييس ،عميد قسم العلوم الرياضية والكمبيوتر والھندسة في جامعة الملك عبد ﷲ للعلوم والتكنولوجيا في المملكة العربية السعودية. حيث تحدث عن أھمية الحوسبة عالية األداء في دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي لتطوير خطط البحوث الحالية والمستقبلية .وتحدثت أيضا ً مارسي باول ،المدير العالمي للتعليم العالي لشركة بوليكوم ،متحدثة عن التطور الذي تشھده تكنولوجيا التعليم والتعليم عن بعد في الشرق األوسط والعالم. وتضمن االجتماع أيضا خالل الجلسات الجانبية متحدثين آخرين من قطاع التعليم العالي والتكنولوجيا في دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة ،حيث تناقش األنشطة الراھنة في مجاالت التدريس والتطبيقات والبحوث. وتشمل الجلسات جانبية موضوعات ھامة مثل التعليم المتنقل في قطاع التعليم العالي واستخدام الحوسبة السحابية للتدريس والبحوث وأھمية وتأثير وجود مركز رقمي على عملية تحقيق النمو االقتصادي لدولة اإلمارات وخطة التعافي من الكوارث باستخدام شبكة "عنكبوت" والتعلم عن بعد ومناقشة تكنولوجيا التعليم ومنتدى المجتمع كانت من ضمن المواضيع األخرى التي سيستفيد منھا الحضور سواء من المھنيين أو الطلبة .أما اليوم الثاني من االجتماع فسيشھد أيضا جلسات يقدمھا الطلبة لعرض مشاريعھم.
