AUS welcomes 250 new students for Spring 2014 semester : Monday, January 27 - 2014 @ 13:05 Students must invest themselves, their time and effort in acquiring knowledge during their undergraduate pursuit as the journey to personal and professional success begins at university, said Acting Chancellor Dr. Thomas Hochstettler to approximately 250 new students and their parents during the bi-annual Orientation Week’s Welcome Session at the Main Building’s Auditorium on Friday, January 24, 2013. During his address, he welcomed new students and their parents on behalf of the university’s founder and president, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. He also urged them to benefit from the university’s resources by thinking beyond the parameters of the proverbial box and seeking help from their professors and departments whenever needed. “I encourage you to begin now to challenge yourself to become an adventuresome student, to let your creativity loose, to try out new ways of thinking, to take classes in fields that are not familiar to you for the sheer joy of exploring a new intellectual tradition,” he said. Dr. Hochstettler also said, “The education students will be receiving at AUS comes in three types. First, students need to be thinking about learning the practical skills associated with their discipline. Second, he talked about liberal learning, where students will acquire the ability to think creatively “to adapt to and accommodate the inevitable changes” that they will confront in their professional and personal life. He concluded by telling the students that the “third way of learning has to do with you as a human being and learning to become an ethical and value-centered adult who will be a credit to yourself, to your family, and to the university, both now and for the rest of your life.” While Dr. Hochstettler focused on introducing students to the different learning processes they will adapt to, Acting Provost Dr. Malcolm Richards stressed the importance of academic integrity and the need to be vigilant during orientation, as it will benefit students in the long run. He added that he hoped students would take advantage of the opportunities they are given during orientation. “One of the most important resources for you during this period of orientation and indeed throughout your time at AUS will be the people you encounter. I encourage you to begin to build your network of contacts—these are resource people who might one day be able to assist you,” he remarked. Dr. Richards also urged students to familiarize themselves with the university catalog as it will play a key role in their degree. “There will be information sessions during this orientation period that will introduce you to the catalog, and I urge you to learn about the resources that are available to you; what is expected of you; the faculty who will be your instructors; courses you will be expected to complete; and what it takes to earn a degree from AUS,” he said. AUS Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Ali Shuhaimy also welcomed new students and their parents. Joining the AUS community is no little achievement, noted Shuhaimy in his speech, as he congratulated freshmen and their parents on making the right choice, ensuring them that the university is keen on maintaining its standards of excellence. “AUS is not just another university; we are an institution that prides itself in being recognized as a leading university in the region,” he said. “Our commitment to the success of our students is evidenced by their achieved stature in community.” Lujain Kamal, a freshman engineering student who voiced her enthusiasm about joining AUS, said, “What caught my attention about AUS, other than it being one of the best universities in the UAE, is its multicultural environment. I would like to get my higher education in a university with a strong American curriculum. In addition, having a degree from AUS could increase my employment chances after graduation.” Lujain’s mother also expressed her contentment with her daughter’s enrollment at AUS and said, “We chose this university because of its advanced level in education since His Highness Sheikh Sultan himself looks after this university. We also have a good feeling about it because of its excellent faculty, and we hope her education here would help her get a job after she graduates.” The welcome session will be followed by a weeklong schedule of events that aim to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the university, from logistics to procedures, which will help them for years to come. It includes on- and off-campus festivities, such as city tours around Sharjah and Dubai, open house games at the Student Center, awareness sessions for parents and students, a dinner reception, and a library tour where participants can win a mini iPad. L’Université américaine de Sharjah s’ouvre sur le Maroc L’Université américaine de Sharjah (AUS), figurant récemment dans le top 440 des meilleures universités du monde dans le prestigieux QS World University Ranking, a lancé, pour la première fois au Maroc, sa campagne de recrutement d’étudiants au début du mois de janvier. Le Matin emploi : Tout d’abord, pourquoi le choix du Maroc pour mener cette campagne de promotion pour votre université ? Ali Shuhaimy : L’Université américaine de Sharjah (AUS) a lancé la première campagne pour le recrutement d’étudiants au Maroc en janvier, après avoir remarqué, au cours des deux dernières années, une augmentation de l’intérêt des étudiants marocains en ligne pour nos programmes accrédités au niveau international. En nous basant sur ces données, nous avons décidé de visiter les écoles qui adoptent des programmes d’enseignement américain à Casablanca, Rabat et Marrakech afin d’introduire notre établissement ainsi que de renforcer les relations avec les écoles américaines au Maroc. En fait, de nombreux étudiants marocains ont suivi un parcours académique au sein de notre université, depuis 2001, tant au premier cycle qu’au sein de nos programmes d’études supérieures.

Quel constat avez-vous pu tirer de la réalisation de cette caravane au Maroc ? Nous sommes ravis d’avoir visité le Maroc et nous sommes impatients de développer une relation plus forte avec les établissements

locaux afin d’encourager les étudiants intéressés de rejoindre notre université. Nous avons eu la chance de rencontrer les futurs étudiants et leurs parents dans les écoles opérant sous le programme d’enseignement américain, dans l’objectif d’établir des relations et d’offrir des conseils sur la meilleure manière de choisir la bonne université. Nous avons aussi montré, lors de ces rencontres, les possibilités uniques offertes par notre université en affirmant que s’ils ont les références nécessaires, ils devraient sans doute se joindre à nous.

Quelles sont les procédures relatives à l’inscription des élèves au sein de votre université ? Il existe trois types de procédures d’admission : début, réguliers ou de transfert. En ce qui concerne la procédure d’admission anticipée, les étudiants en dernière année du secondaire sont invités à postuler en soumettant des relevés de notes officiels recueillant au minimum les deux dernières années précédant la dernière année de l’école secondaire et les scores SAT (le cas échéant). Sachant que le nombre de places est généralement limité, il faut noter que les candidats désirant s’inscrire à la faculté d’ingénierie ainsi que celle d’Architecture, Art et Design, sont priés de déposer leurs dossiers au plus tôt pour augmenter leurs chances d’accès. En outre, les candidats ayant obtenu les meilleures notes, ainsi que le score requis TOEFL ou IELTS (et les scores SAT le cas échéant), seront prioritaires dans notre évaluation des dossiers. L’admission anticipée est uniquement offerte à des candidats hautement qualifiés, elle n’est considérée comme définitive que lorsque les étudiants soumettent un certificat d’études secondaires reconnu et certifié officiellement, ou tout autre

La procédure d’admission régulière concerne les étudiants ayant terminé leurs études secondaires et ayant obtenu un certificat d’études secondaires. Cette catégorie d’étudiants est soumise à la procédure d’admission régulière. Pour ce faire, ils doivent présenter les documents suivants : un certificat d’études secondaires reconnu et certifié officiellement ou son équivalent ; les notes des trois dernières années de l’enseignement secondaire indiquant la moyenne et, si disponible, le classement ; la documentation certifiée conforme des résultats d’examens nationaux de fin d’études et les scores SAT (le cas échéant). Les demandeurs de transferts : Selon la disponibilité des places, les candidats en provenance d’établissements d’enseignement supérieur peuvent être admis sous réserve de conditions spécifiques. Les mêmes procédures mentionnées ci-dessus s’appliquent aux étudiants marocains. Faisant partie des étudiants internationaux, l’université s’occupe d’émettre à ces étudiants un visa d’étudiant pour les Émirats arabes unis.

Comment procédez-vous pour désigner les élèves qui pourraient bénéficier de subventions et de bourses ? Nous offrons un large éventail de subventions, de bourses et des possibilités de travail-études pour assister les étudiants de premier cycle et cycles supérieurs à travers des facilités leur permettant de financer leurs études. Notre établissement propose un certain nombre de subventions et de bourses pour aider les étudiants à payer leurs frais d’éducation. Tous les étudiants sont encouragés à demander de l’aide et de l’assistance financière, sans distinction de race, de sexe, de religion ou d’origine nationale. Ainsi, nous avons créé des fonds pour aider les étudiants nécessitant une aide financière afin de couvrir leurs frais d’études à l’université. Les étudiants de premier cycle hautement qualifiés ayant des ressources financières limitées peuvent bénéficier d’une subvention financière. En ce qui concerne les étudiants à haute performance scolaire, notre établissement s’engage à leur présenter des bourses. Les étudiants avec un ou plusieurs frères et sœurs qui étudient au sein de l’université durant la même période sont admissibles à une sub-
