AUS and Arabtec Construction sign important Memorandum of Understanding American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Arabtec Construction has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering cooperation between the two entities in areas of mutual interest. At a special ceremony held on the sidelines of the recruitment Tawdheef exhibition in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Thomas Hochstettler, Acting Chancellor of AUS, and Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Hammadi, Director of Emiratization at Arabtec Construction, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective institutions. His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Development, inaugurated the event and met with senior officials from both AUS and Arabtec. “It gives me great pleasure to sign this agreement with Arabtec, one of the leading construction companies in the region,” said Dr. Hochstettler. “It has always been our goal to partner with institutions that represent the best values of their industry. Arabtec and AUS both share a passion for excellence. We have many areas of mutual interest, and this MoU is a tangible manifestation of our commitment to work together for the benefit of not just our individual organizations but our respective industries as well,” he added. Hasan Abdullah Ismaik, Chairman of the board of directors for Arabtec Construction, commented: “Arabtec has always been keen on supporting the UAE’s socioeconomic development, and attracting local talent to our fast growing business is at the heart of this initiative. The signing of this MoU coincides with a large-scale campaign to recruit ambitious Emirati youth in a wide range of openings. Indeed, this MoU with AUS is an important milestone in this respect and we look forward to attracting scores of AUS graduates to our business and enabling them to marry their quality education with superb practice at our diverse world-class operations.” The MoU will focus on jointly promoting and implementing cooperation in areas where both AUS and Arabtec have common interests. These include activities such as supporting employment of students and graduates; organizing of student-related programs such as summer training programs and work placement programs; customized corporate programs for Arabtec employees as well as mutual site visits. According to the terms decided, the MoU shall remain in effect for a five-year period. The agreement is reflection of the university’s strategic goals and its emphasis on community outreach. AUS is well known for its focus on building bridges with industry leaders and is committed to establishing and enhancing partnerships that play a palpable role in the progress and development of society. The university has well-established forums where industry leaders are invited to share their expertise and experience. As part of the growing relationship between AUS and Arabtec, Dr. Al Hammadi from Arabtec will be joining one such forum, namely the National Advisory Council of the university’s College of Engineering.

Research competition offers Dh132,000 Abu Dhabi University event spurs students to study further The competition encourages students to think about the high-tech future of the emirate

ABU DHABI // Organisers of the second national undergraduate research competition hope to attract double the number of students this year to compete for Dh132,000 in prize money. “Last year we had 120 participants from 12 institutions in the UAE,” said Dr Nabil Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi University chancellor. “This year, we hope to double that number. Most of the entrants last year were from Dubai and Abu Dhabi and we hope to see that expand to the other emirates so it’s a truly a national competition.” Three years ago, the university , Abu Dhabi’s largest private institution, ran the competition for its own students. The intent was to encourage interest and participation in research for undergraduates to help boost the culture of research in the country and spur the students to further their research beyond their undergraduate degree. Khawla Haroon, a student organiser, said they were reaching out to colleges and technical institutes and making visits to the various institutions as well as using social media to encourage entries. “Being innovative need not only be the universities , but can be the colleges, such as the Higher Colleges of Technology,” she said. The final date for entries for the six categories is February 22, when students and teams must submit a 500-word thesis on their research, which can be in any discipline. “Last year the most popular discipline was business, but this has the most students in the country,” Dr Ibrahim said. “From our university there was a large number of engineering entries, but not every university has engineering.” The competition encourages students to think about Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030 platform and the hightech future of the emirate and the UAE as it diversifies its economy. “We want them to think of things like renewable energy and the areas of micro-electronics and IT,” Dr Ibrahim said. Fatima Abdul Kader, in her final year studying finance and also a student organiser, said they were trying to incentivise students to participate not only with the financial rewards, but also by giving them access to vital industry connections when they present their research. “We’ll be bringing business and industry delegates so they are really reaching out to the right people,” she said. “We want this to be as big as possible as it makes it more competitive and challenging for the students.” Ms Haroon, a final-year accountancy student, said Dubai was a crucial area to concentrate on with more than 130 institutions and Abu Dhabi with more than 50. Institutions that did not participate last year have already contacted the university . “We’ve already had interest from BITS Pilani and Middlesex in Dubai and the American University of Sharjah , but have had a lot of interest so far from Dubai,” Ms Haroon said. Dr Shereen Farouk, head of undergraduate research at ADU, said such competitions were “the best way to promote research, by involving the students, both in organising and participating”. The interest has been seen across all disciplines she said, from English to health and science. The team is targeting 280 institutions. Last year there were 68 submissions and 18 winners across the three sections: engineering, education and arts and social sciences. Among the entries, about 30 to 40 per cent were from Emirati students, which Dr Farouk said was crucial to develop local capacity. “At ADU, it’s already had a very positive impact among our students of all nationalities in terms of their interest in research,” she said. “When you involve them in the research and try to motivate them, they get excited. They just need someone to motivate and direct them.” Printed and distributed by NewpaperDirect | www.newspaperdirect.com | Copyright and protected by applicable law.

Young people do not just want a job, they want a real career Chance to progress even more important than money, they say ABU DHABI // Career progression and a dynamic workplace are just as important as a salary when looking for a new job, according to Emiratis. As businesses and human resource experts gathered in Abu Dhabi yesterday to consider how to raise the number of UAE nationals employed in the private sector, Emirati students and recent graduates gave first-hand insights into their expectations when making their first foray into the job market.

Engineering student Omar Al Badwawi, who is about to graduate from Ajman University .

“From my perspective we always look for a job opportunity where we can actually grow in a company because when you have different challenges that is how you grow and that is how discover your potential,” said Maha Yaqoot, a communications student who has just graduated from Zayed University . “For me, I would say salary is definitely not at the top at the list of priorities, especially for a fresh graduate.” The 22-year-old, from Dubai, was speaking at an Emirati Youth Panel at the Emiratisation Summit, held on the sidelines of the recruitment fair, organised by Tawdheef, the careers and recruitment organisation. “I am definitely looking for an opportunity where I can actually establish my career. I do not want a job – I want a career,” she said. “I want an employee who is willing to challenge me. To be in this situation this will benefit me when I am working.” Young graduates, or anyone on work experience in the private sector, need to be exposed to the “core business” of any industry rather than just sit at a desk and fulfil a role. In this way they will be encouraged to stay and grow with the company in question, she said. “I met people who said they are not exposed to the core of a business. Therefore, they do not develop the love and the passion they need so they do not know if they can grow with the company.” Hassan Bani Al Najjar, 24, studied at the American University of Sharjah before transferring to Zayed University . “My top priority is a place to learn and to gain great experience so I can grow,” said the soon-to-be finance graduate, who also works full-time at the National Bank of Fujairah. “I am looking for a place to learn and grow, and secondly where I can apply my knowledge. The atmosphere of the environment is also very important to me. “I do not want to work in a place that accepts you because you are an Emirati to fill a quota. I want somebody that appreciates experience. “This is a message to young graduates. We must be very ambitious and go to a place where we can learn and grow.” Omar Al Badwawi, 24, who is about to graduate in electrical engineering, said those in college want to go into employment best suited to their degree. “For a university graduate, they want to apply what they have learnt for the four years they spent at university ,” he said. He said the new generation needs to reverse the decades-old trend of the Government being the employer of choice for most Emiratis. According to figures, Emiratis comprise only 0.5 per cent of the private-sector workforce but 60 per cent of the public sector. Changing this preconception can be done with better education and awareness of the benefits of private sector employment, he said.
