The Sharjah Ruler's arrival at the event was marked by a folklore performance by the Palestinian Al Hannouneh Band, the unveiling of a new Alumni Wall of Fame as well as a special light show. A short video on alumni legacies was also shown on the occasion. In his welcoming remarks, AUS Acting Chancellor Dr. Thomas Hochstettler, said, "This annual event is always a very special occasion for us. To see over 2,500 of our alumni return to their alma mater on nights such as this is possibly the most striking manifestation of the fulfillment of His Highness's vision for his university. His Highness's leadership and guidance have been the bedrock of every success we have achieved thus far. And that vision has been ably supported by the commitment and dedication of our Board of Trustees, and by our faculty and staff." "But it is you, our alumni, who constitute the most compelling evidence of the validity and staying power of His Highness's vision. You are our ambassadors across the region and around the world. We are proud of your success and feel vicarious satisfaction as we watch you put to high purpose the learning we gave you during your time at AUS , and as you preserve and promote the values that you absorbed during your sojourn among us," he added. Dr. Nada Mourtada-Sabbah, AUS Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs, welcomed the alumni and said, "You can readily see that AUS is not standing still while basking in its welldeserved reputation for excellence. Each year's achievements are surpassed by those of the following year under the aegis of His Highness, who founded this great university, and you our alumni are the most cogent illustration of this university's success so ably represented by you in all walks of life." For the first time this year, each AUS college and school held its own reception to welcome back its alumni, prior to the reunion. This hour-long gathering gave working graduates the chance to share their work experiences with their faculty mentors and apprise them of the direction their professional lives had taken. The alumni also had the opportunity to meet peers from various other graduating classes and reminisce about their time at AUS . The alumni reunion is one of the highlights of the AUS calendar as it allows alumni from all over the world to convene at the university. On behalf of the AUS Alumni Association (AUSAA), alumnus Ahmed Al Jbori, AUSAA President, congratulated His Highness on the occasion of the crowning of Sharjah as the Islamic Culture Capital by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), and said, "When we combine the AUS intellectual spirit with the esteemed institutions of culture and science found here in Sharjah, it creates an unsurpassed intellectual community. I am proud to have the honor of relating to you all that Sharjah was named the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014 in recognition of its remarkable contributions to science and culture. The research facilities found in Sharjah are a magnet for researchers and scientists. Intellectual development, of course, means innovation in knowledge, and it is at this apex where AUS stands without peer in the Gulf. And we, the standard bearers of our alma mater, demonstrate innovation on a daily basis." He added that he is proud of the many agreements that AUS has signed with some of the finest universities in the world.

The first panel following the keynote address was entitled Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry and was moderated by Caroline Faraj, CNN Arabic Digital Services' Director and CNN Dubai Chief Operations Director. Addressing the panel, Ibrahim Al Abed, Director General of National Media Council (NMC), said that it was essential for media and academia to engage and that internships and on-the-job training for students was extremely important to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Speaking on the occasion, Ali Jaber, Group TV Director of MBC Group and Dean, Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Communication, American University in Dubai, said: "media industry is full of technicians and not enough thinkers and these technicians become redundant when technology evolves. Media executives should have a breadth of knowledge." He observed that most of the educational institutions in the region train their students in English. This is good for western media, he said, but we need to train media students in Arabic so that they are competent and have a professional command of the Arabic Language. They need to know how to cover Arabic stories, to do research in Arabic, and access news in the language it happens in, he stated. "You students are lucky as you are at the forefront of major changes in the industry and it is us who are now becoming obsolete and increasingly irrelevant. It is in our own interest to bring fresh minds into the media industry in order to bring changes," he said addressing the students. In a subsequent session entitled The Media Personality of Tomorrow, Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi, Commentator on Arab Affairs and Social Media Influencer, spoke about the various factors that play a role in the 'creation' of a brand name on social media. Al Qassemi said that it needed passion, technical skills, lots of hard work but also a lot of luck to achieve that aim. He stated that there was no magic formula and that consistent hard work was the best preparation for making one's own luck. As the print or traditional media continues to enjoy better credibility than social media, it still has great influence in the creation of a 'media personality,' opined Mohammed Fahad Alharthi, Editor-in-Chief of Sayidaty, Al-Jamila Magazine and Arab News, Saudi Research and Publishing Company (SRPC), during the session. The congress included a number of other panels which focused on a wide range of topics, including Arabic as a language in media education and production; digital media opportunities and challenges; and the role of talk shows in the Arab media. Other prominent media personalities who spoke at the event included: Osama Samra, Director, Sharjah Media Centre; David Butorac, Chief Executive Officer, Orbit Showtime Network (OSN); Ahmed Salem, Board Member of Sharjah Media Corporation; Kamal Dimachkie, Executive Regional Managing Director, Leo Burnett; Ihsan Jawad, Founder of Zawya.com and Partner, Honeybee Tech Ventures; Rania Barghout, Senior TV Presenter, MBC Group; and Ahmad Mustafa, Chief Editor-Digital, Sky News Arabia, among other prominent names. The day-long congress was also attended by senior government and industry representatives, AUS officials, faculty, students and members of the public. -EndsAbout AUS American University of Sharjah ( AUS ) was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. LATEST STORIES IN MIDDLE-EAST More Author: SHARJAH: K.T. ABDURABB Thu, 2014-02-20 03:00 Virtual personalities that we see on social media and real personalities we meet face-to-face may be different, said Mohammed Fahad Al-Harthi, editor in chief of Arab News, Sayidaty and Jameela while participating in a panel session at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) on Wednesday. “Sometimes we may find a gap between virtual and real personalities. Because the virtual personality is the one that we are trying to be, but the real one may be different,” he explained in a session, entitled The Media Personality of Tomorrow, which was moderated by Ralph Berenger, associate professor of Mass Communications at the AUS. Sultan Saoud Al-Qassemi, commentator on Arab Affairs and Social Media Influencer, David Butorac, chief executive officer of Orbit Showtime Network were among other attendees at the session. “Though social media plays an important role, I still believe that traditional and print media is the most powerful. Even social media is utilizing or capitalizing on the content of traditional media. Moreover, most of the social media personalities have a strong background of traditional

media,” he added. Al-Harthi also answered several questions from media students and other professionals. Asked about the freedom of expression, he said on some occasions, some employees of traditional media have lost their jobs because of their comments on social media, which were against their employers’ policies. Al-Qassemi, said: “One should be careful while tweeting. It is true that it is your account and there is enough freedom on social media, but tweet gently, otherwise, in the future you could be in trouble.” Sultan has over 250,000 followers and was listed in the 140 best Twitter Feeds of 2011 by Time magazine. In a panel entitled Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry, Ibrahim Al-Abed, director general of the UAE national media, called for narrowing the gap between the theory and practice. He also advised the academic institutions to design the media courses according to the changes in the media industry. “Media is one of the rare jobs that requires real passion. You have to love your job then you will excel, otherwise you will be a bureaucrat,” he said. Earlier, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Qassimi, chairman of Sharjah Media Corporation, opened the first GCC Media Education Congress (GMEC) with the theme Education for Employment — Realizing Youth Potential in the Arab Media. Thomas Hochstettler, acting chancellor of the AUS, said: “In today’s world, where communicating effectively is of paramount importance, the dynamism and vitality prevalent in the media industry is not surprising to see. Mahmoud Anabtawi, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the AUS, said: “GMEC is an important platform that highlights the important contributions of higher education and young professionals to the Arab media sector. We are fortunate to have media academics and industry professionals sharing real-world knowledge.” Among other media figures at the event were Osama Samra, director, Sharjah Media Centre; Philip Seib, professor of journalism and public diplomacy, University of Southern California; Ali M. Jaber, group TV director of MBC Group; Caroline Faraj, CNN Arabic Digital services director and CNN Dubai chief operations director; Rania Barghout, senior TV presenter, MBC Group; and Ahmad Mustafa, editor in chief, Sky News Arabia, were the other prominent personalities who spoke on different sessions.

Internet isn’t the best-ever invention The telescope, that allows us to see far in space and thus back in time, giving us an unprecedented understanding of our own existence, is a far superior tool By Nidhal Guessoum | Special to Gulf News Published: 20:00 February 12, 2014
I recently finished reading Infinite Progress, a book that was published last year. Its author, Byron Reese, argues that the internet will soon allow us to get rid of ignorance, disease, poverty, hunger and war. No less. This claim is doubly stunning: First, can we really believe that these major problems of the world, which have existed for as long as life has existed on earth, will soon (within a century or less) disappear? Second, how could the internet possibly be in a position to eradicate disease, poverty, war and such? I was intrigued and the book came supported by some good blurbs, so I picked it up one day at an airport and I lately found some time to go through it. The author makes a good, 300-page informative and http://gulfnews.com/opinions/columnists/internet-isn-t-the-best-ever-invention-1.1290073

entertaining presentation of his arguments. And while his optimism and extended reach do at times strain the reader’s open mind, quite often one finds the case being made, at least as far as ignorance and disease are concerned, quite persuasive. So how could the internet help us defeat those big problems? The main idea is that not only does the internet allow for unprecedented flow of information and communication between people, but it will soon allow us to store every little piece of information about each one of us and the analysis of this “big data” (more like “humongous data”) will allow researchers to extract solutions to every kind of problem, no matter how small or big. Indeed, the author argues (quite convincingly) that until very recently, many discoveries, especially medical ones, were both unpredictable and assumed to apply widely. Researchers used to notice that some product seemed to work in a given condition or they tried many different possibilities and looked for the one that worked and from that they extracted a medication or remedy. The problem with this approach is two-fold: It is a blind man’s type of search and thus takes a long time to hit on a solution. Secondly, such cures almost invariably work only for some people not all and that too under certain circumstances or in combination with certain factors and not with others. The “big data” that we will construct from our individual experiences will find more solutions and show what works for whom and when, not what works in general. Reese is aware that this whole scenario rests on our willingness to share what he calls our “digital echoes”, i.e. detailed information about us that can be useful to anyone else. We already do that to some extent, as when we purchase books on Amazon or post ratings and http://gulfnews.com/opinions/columnists/internet-isn-t-the-best-ever-invention-1.1290073

comments on hotels and services that other customers use to make their own decisions. What if we were willing to allow our cellphones to automatically post online every experience we go through in life — things ranging from what pain I felt this morning, what medicine I took and how things went after that, to my personal genome and family medical history and which medication works for me and which does not. Generalise this example in other areas and you get an idea of what the internet can do. Reese regards the internet as the greatest human invention of all time. In barely two decades, it has become so essential to our lives and work that one cannot imagine doing almost anything without it. Indeed, in a book that comes out this week, a collection of essays titled ‘What Should We Be Worried About?’ by a hundred or so prime thinkers of the world, philosopher Daniel Dennett and historian of science and technology George Dyson consider the possible breakdown of the internet as the issue that they are most worried about. There is no doubt that the internet is a major contender for the top spot of human inventions, but I am not sure it is the greatest. In fact, it is difficult to single out one or two products. Some will argue that antibiotics and vaccines, having saved tens or even hundreds of millions of lives and helped double life expectancy over the past century, deserve that top spot. Call me biased if you will, but I like to look upward and zoom out of our earthly problems. I like to look at humanity and earth in the whole cosmic context. What is a century in the ‘big history’ of life, earth, the solar system and the universe, all of which are measured in billions of years? http://gulfnews.com/opinions/columnists/internet-isn-t-the-best-ever-invention-1.1290073

My vote would go to the telescope, which allowed us to see far in space and (thus) back in time in a way that gives us an unprecedented view and understanding of our own existence. And in a few centuries, when we will have been able to send ambassadors to planets around other stars, we will consider the rocket (from its primitive to its advanced future form) as the greatest tool ever invented.
