The birthplace of three major religions, students choosing the Middle East as a study abroad destination will discover a wealth of history and culture like no other place in the world, writes CLAI RE TWYMAN . ncompassing countries from Northeast Africa, Eastern Europe and Western Asia, the Middle East is a spellbinding region often dubbed as the cradle of civilisation. Three of the world 's largest monotheistic religionsChristianity, Judaism and Islam - were born here, leaving behind an open-air museum of ancient cities and historic buildings. While conflict is continually developing in some areas, there are a number of countries with a safe environment in which students can explore the landscapes and cultures while receiving a fi rst-class education. "A major point of differentiation is the incredible pace of change within this region," explains L inda Angell at American University of Sharjah (AUS) www.aus.edu in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - a thriving country on the Persian Gulf with a diI verse and multicultural society. "Dubai, Abu ~ Dhabi and Sharjah - the rhree largest emir~ ates within the UAE - are well-known for (:; their fast-paced dynamism and leading edge ~ when it comes to economic development," she says. "At the same time, the Middle East .. [has] a strong sense of hospitality and a great :l'" sense of humour - an interestingjuxtaposi~ tion to explore!" ~ The UAE is d ivided into seven emirates ~_ in total, and Angell says that they all have

E

a very different vibe. "We recommend that students try to visit all of them . .. this is easy enough with bus transportation available from down town Sharjah," she explains, adding that AUS takes students on in-depth city tours of Dubai, Sharjah and even the Musandam Peninsula of Oman to the north. "A must-see is the beautiful Empty Qyarter Deserts in the southern part of the UAE, on the border of Saudi Arabia, and another wonderful trip is to Bani Vas Island. It is off the coast of Abu Dhabi - a wildlife refuge of native Rora and fauna ." Also boasting the beautiful Sheikh Zayed Mosque, according to A ngell, the capital city has been a melting pot of cultures since the 1960s and disputes are infrequent. The city is also famed for poetry, often themed around love, satire and religion, and the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation works to preserve art and culture in the city. Sharjah has a similarly cultural feel, w ith Angell listing the Sharjah Museum ofIslamic Civilization, Sharjah Maritime Museum and Arabia's Wildlife Centre as worth visiting. It also hosts the Sharjah Biennial- a contemporary arts festival. Since 1998, the emirate has been known as U nesco's Cultural Capital of the Arab World . A study abroad experience in the UAE is incomplete w ithout a trip to Dubai. While

coming second to the capital in terms of landmass, it is the most populous city in the country and has an altogether more glitzy and glamourous feel. A lthough it has experienced tremendous economic growth over the last few decades, Dubai has its own identity as a city where east meets west, with its traditional approach fused with Western interests. "It is well-known for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings, luxury hotels and man-made beaches," says Nouf Al Khalifa at the Dubai branch of London Business School www.london.edu . "It also exudes an entrepreneurial spirit that d rives change that might norm ally take decades in other parts of the world." In terms of things to see and do, Al Khalifa recommends the Burj Khalifa - the world's tallest building. Other must-see landmarks include "Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East; the .Agent viewpoint "Students find the Middle East to be an exotic destinat ion w here t hey can learn a new view of every topic. They can also discover an unknown field of the world. Students are most surprised by the different kinds of landscapes. They appreciate the way that the people behave and enjoy the architecture." ‘Firms must intervene at varsity level to prepare locals for jobs’ Staff Reporter / 25 February 2014 The regional private sector is still dominated by the expatriate workforce, and governments across the region are looking at measures to make the private sector more appealing to the local workforce. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Arab Gulf states need to create a massive 600,000 jobs by 2018, just to maintain a credible percentage of nationals working in the private sector. The two largest economies in the Arab world — Saudi Arabia and the UAE — are challenged to turn the massive growth of their private sectors into jobs for their nationals. One of the region’s IT solutions providers is helping to change the way select UAE students are approaching their university studies by preparing them today to be the country’s workforce of tomorrow. According to the UAE Labour Ministry, the country needs to create anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 jobs a year in the private sector, just to meet the requirements of the labour force likely to join the job market over the next decade. It is estimated that Emiratis working in the private sector do not exceed seven per cent, according to published data from the UAE Ministry of Economy. Initiatives by private companies like scholarships and workplace internships are helping nationals choose careers in the private sector. Hasan Metla, Chief Financial Officer of Omnix International, says that his company became more involved in university activities once it was able to measure the enormous impact of its initiatives. He believes that despite gaps being successfully filled, a greater number of leading organisations should consider playing a role in the provision of services for the UAE’s higher education sector, as participation can only bring shared rewards for all parties involved. “Filling education support services gaps with specialist solutions from third parties is a ‘win-win’ situation for everyone. The educational institutions benefit by having an organisation whose service provision is their particular forte; the students gain from having an additional knowledge resource; and the providers benefit through their name becoming embedded in the minds of a generation of future leaders and potential employees,” said Metla. “Just having a master’s degree is no longer enough to guarantee a top job, students need real-life experiences and market know-how before they step into their working careers. The private sector must play a defining role in helping the new workforce acquire skills, which will make them standout in the job market,” added Metla. Omnix International provides IT solutions for the education, government, oil and gas, healthcare, finance, and aviation sectors, among others. It already enjoys close working relationships with several leading UAE universities, including UAE University, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi University, American University in Sharjah, American University of UAE, and the American University in Dubai. news@khaleejtimes.com
