Sharjah, (UAE): American University of Sharjah (AUS) has recently awarded the Sheikh Khalifa Scholarship to four of its outstanding students. The award is part of AUS initiative to encourage students’ academic excellence and leadership skills. Winners of Sheikh Khalifa Scholarship for this year were Ali Shadmanian, School of Business Administration; Nada Ramadan, College of Arts and Sciences; Moataz Abdrabou, College of Engineering; and Anaisabel Olvera Alacio, College of Architecture, Art and Design. The Sheikh Khalifa Scholarship is awarded to AUS students who excel academically, show distinguished societal service and leadership skills, demonstrate talent in their field of study, and participate in university and extracurricular activities. Dr. Thomas Hochstettler, AUS Acting Chancellor, congratulated the students and praised them for their achievements. “This is the high point of every academic year when we take the time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of some of our most distinguished students,” said the Acting Chancellor. “It is a great honor to be awarded the Sheikh Khalifa scholarship and we are extremely proud of our students on their achievement,” he added. Kevin Mitchell, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and Instruction, congratulated the winners on being selected and praised them for their hard work and dedication. “This is the highest award given at AUS, and it is probably the one that has most scrutiny. The awardees have been through two levels of review. There is a comprehensive review of each candidate at the school and college level,” explained Mitchell. “These recommendations are then forwarded to a committee at the university level. The committee comprises people from academics as well as from the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Public Affairs,” he added.
The Sheikh Khalifa Scholarship awardees receive funding that covers up to 16 credit hours for four consecutive semesters or until graduation requirements are met. The scholarship funds come from the revenues of an AED 10 million donation by His

The AUS e-book is available in English and Arabic, as well as an audio file, which can be downloaded for free at www.aus.edu/firstyearguide. The objective of the e-book is to close the gap between secondary and tertiary education by preparing high school students and advising their parents and school counsellers on important factors that they may face during their academic journey Topics addressed in the eBook include explanations of the American educational grading system, an overview of the academic integrity and honour code, and the concept of academic probation. It also helps students with life outside the classroom, from encouraging them to participate in extracurricular activities, to stressing the importance of maintaining their health and staying fit, to helping them manage their spending. “This e-book speaks to senior high school students and highlights keys areas they will need to become familiar with in order to successfully complete their first year. It places emphasis not only on their studies but also on personal, social and cultural growth during their first semester,” Ali Shuhaimy, Vice-Chancellor for Enrollment Management at AUS, said. The e-book is the second in a series of ‘How to’ guides produced by AUS as part of its strategic initiative to be a thought leader in the region. Staff Report Gulf News 2014. All rights reserved.

Pearls of wisdom from candid Abraaj founder Once you are seated on the comfy sofas in the office of Arif Naqvi in the Dubai International Financial Centre, there are plenty of things to talk about. Mr Naqvi is the founder and chief executive of Abraaj Group, the biggest private equity firm in the Middle East with some US$8 billion of assets under management, so that makes him a player and an opinion former in virtually all the big issues of the region. Then we talk in more detail about transparency. Like many companies registered in the DIFC, Abraaj does not publish financial accounts, or at least does not make them available to the public and the media. I suggest that this is at odds with best practice in many parts of the western business world, where financial information is available in some form at least. But to get back to Pearl, I ask how he sees it developing beyond the current range of activities: educational courses, workshops, research and reports, all in the cause of good governance and much of it driven from the American University of Sharjah.
