Don't pass on your maths phobia Last month, a study was released on maths phobia, in relation to the Programme for International Student Assessment — a series of tests given to 15-year-old students in 65 countries. Tunisia had the highest index of maths anxiety (0.65), followed by Argentina, Brazil, Thailand, and Jordan (0.51). Canada Portugal, Norway, Latvia and Australia have the least maths anxiety, with indices ranging from 0.01 to 0.03. The UAE had a score of 0.19. To assess maths phobia, students were asked whether they agreed with the statement: “I get very tense when I have to do maths homework.” In the UAE, 37 per cent of them agreed or strongly agreed with that. Third International Conference on Arabic Language continues activities The activities of the Third International Conference on Arabic Language which brought together more than 500 speakers and 1000 participants from U.A.E. and other Arab countries to discuss the challenges facing the Arabic language and the language's situation, have continued yesterday for the third day at Al Bustan Rotana Dubai , with participation of figures from UAE University ,American University of Sharjah and University of Sharjah as well as others . Also, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, today commended the recent launch of Mohammed bin Rashid Arabic Language Award as instrumental in encouraging outstanding contributions to efforts to preserve and promote the Arabic language. In a special statement, Sheikh Hamadan bin Mubarak said, "the new award reflects the farsightedness vision of the leadership's U.A.E. Vision 2021 despite the fact that the country has achieved the highest rankings in its response to the requirements the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014)," which seeks to mobilise the educational resources of the world to help create a more sustainable future. "This vision stipulates that Arabic should regain its stature as a dynamic, resilient and vivid language that is used in all activities and expressed national, Arab and Islamic values and that U.A.E. should become a centre of excellence for the Arabic language through hosting scholars and researchers, supporting Arabic content and encouraging the translation of international literary and scientific works into Arabic as the sustaining language and identity is a top priority along side sustaining education and development." The minister also commended the Third International Conference on Arabic Language, organised in Dubai last week by Beirut-based Arabic Language International Council and Unesco under the theme "Investment in Arabic Language, Its National, Arab and International Future".
