Solving the problem of maths anxiety in children... I began to get nervous when I received an e-mail from our daughters' school about their end-of-year maths assessment exam. Memories of school flooded back and I even got butterflies in my stomach the same ones I used to get when I sat a maths exam myself! "At school, teachers must make maths relevant to children's lives," says Nidhal Guessoum, a professor and associate dean at the American University of Sharjah. "They must also make the mathematics class a positive learning experience for pupils and not a dreadful time. " Published on: 22/05/2014 Name: Gulf Daily News Page: 14

Sharjah seeks fare play As Sharjah Municipality dishes out a Food Safety Program to reduce violations by food premises and change food behavior. Lily B. Libo-on finds out from Sheikha Dr Rasha Ahmed Al Qassimi, Assistant Director-General for Public Health and Central Laboratories, what else the two-pronged drive is cooking up. Other than hotels, we have the American University of Sharjah with its 12 restaurants fully accredited. It is the first academic institution to have complied. Other universities and colleges are either working on it or not yet started. The City for Humanitarian Services has implemented the programme for its special-needs individuals and some private schools. Even the Sharjah Ladies' Club has all its food outlets under the GHP. Which other areas are being targeted? We are targeting all hotels in Sharjah. So far, only the Hilton Sharjah has got both the GHP and Hazard accredit-a- Are other sectors also trained under the programme? Currently, we are providing practical training to domestic help. How do you see the programme five years from now? It is not what we see. We wanted to change people's behaviour. We did not force them. But they have now evolved into our inspectors, instead of us being their inspectors. They are training their own people and inspecting themselves. They are auditing themselves because they know it is their business, their responsibility. Published on: 2/05/2014 1ame: .haleej Times Page: 4
