Now you can monitor your health on a smartphone Smartphones are great for texting, chatting on social media or surfing the web. Now a group of students from the American University of Sharjah have discovered their iPhones have hidden talents that when used correctly can detect and monitor cases of lung disease in patients. The students tested 27 people, one of whom was asthmatic, and compared the findings from their phones with those gathered by a spirometer used in hospitals to monitor a patient’s deterioration. Sheikha Manal Art Exchange programme returns to Dubai Last week, a delegation of young, Emirati women artists participating in The Sheikha Manal Art Exchange Program returned to Dubai following a successful visit to Hong Kong as part of an enriching art program, centred on the acclaimed Art Basel Fair. The group comprised of 10 students pursuing careers in art, design and architecture from universities across the Emirates; under the supervision of Mona bin Kalli, Director of The Cultural Office, Khalid Shafar, respected UAE artist and representing facilitator to the delegation, as well as members from The Cultural Office Organising Committee. This program was sponsored by Emirates Airlines. Peer tutoring earns popularity in Oman The Language Centre at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has been practising Peer Tutoring for four years. It is a system where students are tutored by senior students who have successfully completed a peer tutoring training course. The number of peer tutors has increased each year to reach its current total of 34. In the coming fall semester ،the Tutorial Centre will have 40 peer tutors to support their juniors. By keeping a good number of peer tutors on duty ،the Centre makes sure adequate tutors available for tutees. Commenting on the selection procedure of peer tutors, Alexandra Craig, Coordinator of the Tutorial Centre, Student Support Unit said that potential student tutors write a letter of application and interviewed by the coordinators.“If successful they attend a one day training at the start of the semester. During the first symposium peer tutors from The Arab Open University, Dhofar University, Nizwa University and Sultan Qaboos University joined to share best practices and start a dialogue. Each university showcased its centre and participated in creating vision and mission statements for an Oman Peer tutoring Network (OPTN). During the symposium Dr Lynne Ronesi from American University of Sharjah and Dr Qassim al Mamari from Sohar College of Applied Science were the keynote speakers who shared their knowledge and experience on education and in tutoring to help inspire and educate the audience.
