Model of Skylight

The word “Fudan,” chosen by Mr. Ma Xiang-bo, the founder and the renowned modern educator, found its linguistic origin in the quotation — “Heavenly light shines day after day”. It means striving continuously to make new progress and carries the hope of Chinese intellectuals to run a school independently and rejuvenate the country by education.

11 About Fudan University – School of Management in Shanghai

Now Fudan is part of a network of universities and their respective buildings located in Shanghai. It is also an exceptional university with an extensive history and a unique character. Aside from the main campus, there are two new campuses. These campuses are not closely located, they are separate pieces, and in order to establish a connection, the buildings must convey the identity of Fudan and contemporary life. Miralles Tagliabue (EMBT) was awarded first prize in the International Competition for the New Campus of Fudan University School of Management in Shanghai, China.

Rendering before Construction - Skylight made of glass (Transparent)

Building after construction - Skylight made of Metal finish (Opaque)

Hence, the designed landscape roof structure allows sunlight to penetrate through the roof as a symbolic reference. stages the light that infiltrates the building. “Heavenly lights” can now be experienced everyday by the students while they study and gather at the university.

Key attention is given to the public gathering space of the building. Timber and other materials are used to give a comfortable and welcoming feeling. The central Boulevard is more urban and has big trees and water features. The internal zone introduces vegetation in between the building and mixes the interior.
