Rethinking Spiro Mounds For years Spiro Mounds was thought to be a Mississippian chiefdom that flourished from trade. But a noted Spiro expert now believes it was a ceremonial center. The first excavation of this important site in more than 40 years could confirm or refute his hypothesis.
