Greetings Skiers & Friends of the Birkie! Welcome to the north woods and the land of Birkie Fever! After months of dryland drills, strength training, rollerskiing, and finally strapping on your skis for time on the snow…your Birkie event is finally here! We’ve been busy grooming trails, coordinating teams, planning events, preparing spaces, plowing and hauling snow, printing materials, sorting bibs, and finalizing every little detail to make certain this is the best Birkie week of festivities ever! This dual purpose Official Birkie Race Guide and Visitor Guide is your secret weapon to a successful race experience and should answer most every question you have about your time immersed in all things Birkie.

Family Friday Parking and Busing Information New Parking & Busing in 2016! In an effort to reduce congestion in downtown Hayward, and traffic flow on Highway 63, busing and parking for the 2016 Birkie week of festivities is more efficient than ever! Family Friday Participants: Barnebirkie and Junior Birkie Families should park in the lots at the Fishing Hall of Fame on County Road B (a/k/a The Big Fish). Shuttle buses will be running all-day between the Start (on Lake Hayward) and the Celebration Plaza (near the finish line, Downtown Hayward). There will be no street parking around the Main Street area on Friday from 6:00am to 3:00pm. Skiers and spectators are strongly encouraged to park in designated Birkie lots and ride the shuttle buses to and from downtown Hayward.

Saturday, February 20 The Biggest Show on Snow Before the Race The following information is critical for race participants of the Slumberland American Birkebeiner, the Kortelopet, and the Prince Haakon ski races. Please read this information in its entirety to ensure you’re ready for race day!

Bib Pick-Up & Eligibility Pre-Race Bib Pick-Up • Where: Located at the Birkie Expo • When: Thursday, February 18th from 1:00pm to 8:00pm & Friday, February 19th 9:00am to 8:00pm

Race Day Pick-Up • Where: Located in the bib pick-up tent near the start pens • When: Saturday, February 20th from 6:30am to 9:00am Credentials Required for Bib Pick-Up • All participants received a 2016 Bib Confirmation email. You must bring a copy of this confirmation, along with your photo ID to the bib pick-up • If someone else will be picking up your bib, you must send a photocopy of your driver’s license, a copy of your 2016 Bib Confirmation email, and a written and signed statement naming the person and allowing them to pick up your bib. Documentation on phones will not be allowed Transfer of Entries • Entry fees are non-transferable between individuals or for future races • It will be considered a violation of event rules if a participant competes under a false identity • Allowing another individual to participate in the bib assigned to you will result in their disqualification and a fine imposed on both parties Transfer between Events & Waves • All requests for race or wave transfer must have been made by January 22 transfers are no longer allowed • Participants who complete an event or technique in an event for which they are not registered will be credited for completing the race but will not be given a finish time, will not be eligible for awards, and will not be included in the official results

Age Restrictions • All participants in the Slumberland American Birkebeiner must be 18 years of age by race day • Kortelopet participants must be 13 years of age by race day • Prince Haakon participants must be 10 years of age by race day

Race Day! The Start - Cable, WI Getting to the Start • Map on pages 22-23 Bus Drop-Off • Map on page 12 • All skiers will be dropped at the Telemark Bus Center which is a 400m walk from the Start Area (about 10 minutes) • Kortelopet and Prince Haakon skiers will return to this location for transport back to the parking lots after their race

Birkie & Korte Tents • Keep warm in these two large tents, located in the start area, before your wave Bag Drop • A white Birkie Drop Bag or yellow Korte Drop Bag will be given to each skier at bib pick-up • This bag should be used to hold items that skiers will need at the race finish • There are two bag drop areas: Birkie Drop Area is at the trucks and located to the north of the Start pens; Korte & Prince Haakon Drop Area is a fenced-off area located between the Korte Tent and Korte Finish Line • Skiers must drop their bag in the area designated by their wave number • The Prince Haakon has its own wave • Only items that securely fit into the issued bags will be transported to the pickup area (no skis will be accepted or transported) • The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation is not responsible for lost or stolen items

Start Procedure • Birkie and Korte skiers assigned to the same wave number are released from Pen 1 at the scheduled start time for that wave • Skiers in Pens 2 & 3 must be on foot, not on skis • When a wave is released, the next wave of skiers may enter Pen 1 and put on their skis in preparation for their start • Each wave start is signaled when the Honor Guard fires a shot and the Start Gate is lifted • TIP: It is generally faster to enter the pens from the back and advance forward as the prior waves are released. Skiers may enter Pen 3 as early as 15 minutes prior to their wave start time and may advance forward as each prior wave is released

Timing Procedure • Skiers MUST start at their assigned time • It is the responsibility of each skier to enter start Pen 1 no later than 5 minutes prior to their assigned start time • Skiers who start before their assigned start time will be disqualified • Skiers who arrive more than 5 minutes late will be allowed to start in a later wave • Skiers must enter Pen 1 and pass the start line as instructed by the Gate Keepers • Elite Wave finish times are determined by gun time all other Wave finish times are determined by net time (time when you cross the finish line minus time when you cross the start line) Race

Separate Courses for Classic & Skate – Birkie, Korte & Prince Haakon • Map on page 16 • From the start area, both classic and skate techniques share the same course for 500 meters where they split, with classic skiers staying left, and skaters going right • The courses rejoin, and split again along the power lines, and at the Power Line, Timber Trail, Boedecker, and OO Aid Stations • The Birkie classic and skate courses rejoin at Picnic Table Hill, 2 km south of the OO Aid Station, and remain together until the finish • The Korte classic and skate courses rejoin at the Timber Trail Aid Station and remain together until the finish • The Prince Haakon courses rejoin at the cut over to the Korte course and remain together until the finish • Skaters are asked to stay off of the classic tracks on these shared sections • TIP! Classic skiers keep left at every split! Prince Haakon Course • The Prince Haakon course has two separation points from the Birkie and Korte courses. First, it cuts off the Birkie Course at 6 Km skate and 7 km classic. After this short cut off, it joins the Korte course after 11 km. This is a narrow intersection, Prince Haakon skiers keep left to merge safely with the Korte skiers! The second is at the Telemark Trails Aid Station, where Prince Haakon skiers keep left. Kortelopet Course • The Korte course separates from the Birkie course 100 meters past Timber Trail Aid Station (9 km). At this point, both classic and skate Korte skiers keep left with Birkie classic skiers for another 200 meters where they will reach another split, at this junction all Korte skiers keep left, and Birkie classic skiers keep right. On Course Signage • There are signs marking every kilometer on the Birkie courses, counting down from the Start • TThere are signs marking the last 10km of the Korte course, beginning at the Birkie/Korte course split • There are no signs specific to the Prince Haakon distances Aid Stations • Fuel up with Nuun Hydration, GU Energy Gels, water, & bananas. Some aid stations will have orange slices and cookies • There are replacement poles, Swix kick wax, and tools at each station • Aid stations are spaced 4 to 9 kilometers apart. Skiers are encouraged to carry their own nourishment between stations

Dropping Out • Skiers who are not able to finish the race should report immediately to the medical shelter at any aid station, the information booth at the Birkie Finish, or the Medical Tent at the Korte Finish • Transportation to the Finish areas will be provided to those in need • See procedures for picking up your drop bag in Drop Bag Pick-Up information on page 17

Cut-Off Time • Skiers who do not reach identified aid stations by the designated times will be asked to leave the race and will not receive a finish time or credit for finishing the race • Nourishment and medical aid will not be available past the cut-off times noted • Transportation to Hayward will be provided from the Birkie cut-off locations • The Korte cut-off is located in close proximity to the Korte Finish area - skiers who don’t make the cut-off can walk or ski back to the Korte Tent

Medical Care • Each Aid Station is equipped with a shelter staffed with a professional medical team, and is equipped with evacuation vehicles • The course is patrolled every 15 minutes by members of the National Ski Patrol Skier Tracking • Family, friends, and fans can follow their favorite skier with live tracking from Race My Race at www.racemyrace/trackmybirkie.com. The site provides time stamps when skiers reach intermediate timing points at Fire Tower, OO, and Mosquito Brook Aid Stations, and at the entry to Lake Hayward, as well as highly accurate estimated finish times

Birkie Finish – Hayward, WI Navigating the Finish Zone

Drop Bag Pick-Up • Your drop bag will be located within the restricted zone • If you dropped out of the race, proceed to the information booth near the exit of the Finish Zone on 5th Street and a volunteer will retrieve your bag for you Changing • After you pick-up your drop bag, you will exit the restricted zone and proceed onto 5th Street • Ahead, and on your right, is the entrance to the Changing Area hosted at the Hayward Intermediate School – watch for signs • You may leave your skis and poles in the ski-racks across the street • After changing, please exit the Changing Area out the opposite end from which you entered • The Changing Area is restricted to skiers only and you must show your race bib to enter • No Showers are available

Finish Zone (see map on page 19) • After you cross the Finish Line at 4th Street you will enter a zone restricted to skiers and officials only • In this area, first year finishers will receive a Birkie medal and all other skiers will receive a pin that indicates the number of Birkies that each racer has completed • Look for signs to indicate which aisle you should use to get the correct award • Proceed forward where you will receive a pair of ski straps to hold your skis together as you navigate the Finish Zone • As you make your way to pick-up your drop bag, be sure to recover with Nuun Hydration, Clif Bars, and Kemps Chocolate Milk


Food Tent • As you exit the Changing Area, you will be facing the Birkie Finish Skier’s Food Tent • Here all skiers can enjoy a bowl of soup, rolls, bananas, and cookies • Sorry, no soup for friends and family, please • There is food available from vendors on the Celebration Tent in the Celebration Plaza between Main Street and Dakota Avenue Reunion Zone • The Finish Zone and Changing Area are restricted to skiers only • Please plan to meet your non-skiing friends and family in the Reunion Zone on the corner of 5th and Wisconsin

Bus Center • This is the terminal for both the skier and spectator parking lots • Volunteers will assist you in getting on a bus that will take you back to your parking lot • Please do not use this area as a skier pick-up location • Personal vehicles are not allowed on the streets in the vicinity of the Main Street corridor Celebration Plaza • All are welcome to come to the Celebration Plaza to watch others finish, share their race stories, and fuel-up • Vendors will be in the tent offering a variety of food and drink available for purchase • Downtown restaurants will also be open for both spectators and skiers alike

Korte & Prince Haakon Finish – Cable, WI Navigating the Finish Zone Finish Zone (Map on page 12) • After you cross the Kortelopet Finish Line, first year finishers will receive a Korte Medal, and the rest will receive a pin that indicates the number of Kortelopet races that they have completed • Prince Haakon Finishers will receive a pin commemorating the race • Look for signs to indicate which aisle to use to get the correct award • Proceed forward and you will receive a pair of ski straps to hold your skis together as you navigate the Finish Zone Bag Pick-Up • Your bag can be found in the same location in which you dropped it before the race Changing • After you pick up your drop bag, proceed into the Korte Tent where you will find a Changing Area 18

Results, Awards & More Race Results • You did it! • Personal result print outs are available at stations in the Birkie Finish Food Tent and Korte Tent • Online results will be available by 5:00pm at birkie.com/ski/events/birkie/results • Pick-up a copy of the Sawyer County Record commemorative results issue available throughout the Cable and Hayward areas on Sunday morning

Birchlegger Awards • Skiers who finish their 20th Birkie earn the special status of Birchlegger • Personalized awards are given for 20, 30 and 40 year Birkies completed • If you are in this revered group, you are invited to receive your award at a special breakfast hosted by the Birchleggings Club© held on Sunday at 9:00am at the Steakhouse & Lodge in Hayward • If you are unable to attend the breakfast, awards will be available at the Birkie Cabin on Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00pm • If you are unable to pick up your award, you may request to have it shipped to you, at your expense, until March 31, 2016. Getting Around on Race Day - February 20 Participants of the Slumberland American Birkebeiner, Kortelopet and Prince Haakon must utilize the following parking lots and skier drop-off areas. Skiers will be given priority for boarding buses at all bus pick-up areas. All access roads leading to the start area are restricted and limited to designated buses and specially permitted vehicles only. BUS CENTER

Telemark. This is the only busing center available at the start area for the Slumberland American Birkebeiner, Kortelopet and Prince Haakon races. This is also the bus center for the finish of the Kortelopet and Prince Haakon races. Buses dropping off and picking up at this location will return to the following lots until 6:00pm: Birkie Ridge, Como, and the Hayward Bus Center. There is no return service to Cable skier drop-off areas from this bus center. This is a bus only area - no individual skier drop off is allowed. Buses will run continuously. Hayward. Adjacent to the Hayward Intermediate School, this is the only busing location in downtown Hayward. Buses dropping off and picking up at this location will return to the following lots until 6:30pm: Birkie Ridge, Como, spectator lots, and the Telemark Bus Center. There is no return service to Cable skier drop-off areas from this bus center. This is a bus only area - no individual skier drop off is allowed. Buses will run continuously.

Return service from Telemark is through the Hayward Bus Center and then to Donnellan Field until 6:30pm. There is no direct service to this lot from the Telemark Bus Center. Birkie Ridge. Capacity 1300 vehicles. Estimated bus time to the start is :30 minutes. Bus service to Telemark and the race start is from 6:00am to 9:15am. Return service from both the Telemark and Hayward Bus Centers runs until 6:30pm. Como Parking Lot. Capacity 1900 vehicles. Estimated bus time to the start is :25 minutes. Bus service to Telemark and the race start is from 6:00am to 9:15am. Return service from both the Telemark and Hayward Bus Centers runs until 6:30pm.

Spectator Parking Lots Hayward High School. Capacity 350 vehicles, including overflow parking on the athletic field. There is no bus service to Telemark and the start area from this location. Spectator shuttles to the Hayward Bus Center will run from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Buses will run continuously. Donnellan Field. Capacity 350 vehicles. Bus service to the start area from 5:45am to 6:30am. Spectator shuttle to the Hayward Bus Center will run from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Buses will run continuously. Special Dorm & Hotel Bus Service – to the Start Only!
