President’s Message

q

with Brad Boyd

q q

I hope you, your family and loved ones are enjoying the holiday season. I can’t believe another ABBI season has already come to a close. We had another great year and, despite the economy, paid out over $1.8 million at events. I hope you were able to join us in Las Vegas for the World Finals. We had a record number of bulls in Las Vegas. We had an outstanding group of Classic bulls competing and it was Bushwacker who earned the $250,000 Classic prize and title. Bushwacker was also our Year-End Champion and in the running for the PBR’s Bull of the Year. Moon and Bad Blake shared honors as Reserve Finals Champion. Ragin JT beat out 34 Futurity bulls to take the Futurity crown and $100,000. Ragin JT also finished first at the Finals Qualifier event in Stephenville, beating out 144 bulls. Sham-Wow and Black Betty split the Reserve title. Super Cool Cat was the Year-End Champion. While the Finals was going on in Las Vegas, we also had ABBI staff at the annual FFA Convention where over 500 FFA kids took part in our bucking bull judging pilot program. As I always say, the kids are the future of our sport and this is another way we can get kids involved and excited about the ABBI. I look forward to another year as your President and encourage you to reach out to me and all the Board members with your ideas and suggestions. I’d also like to welcome our newest ABBI board member, Cindy Rosser. We’ll be having our annual New Year’s Eve event in Fort Worth to kick-off the new ABBI season, hope to see you and your family there to ring in 2011.

I hope you had a chance to make it out to Las Vegas. This was my twelfth trip to the Finals to watch the world’s best bucking bulls. Thanks to the dual powerhouses of PBR and ABBI, there is bucking bull action going on almost non-stop. Between the events at Thomas & Mack and the PBR Fan Zone, if you love bucking bulls—as a breeder, contractor or fan—it was a week of bliss. Make that a hectic, insane, busy week of bliss. With the PBR changing their Finals format (from eight rounds spread out over a 10-day period) to six rounds in five days, I knew the 2010 Finals would be a super-condensed experience. I was looking forward to being away from home less, but wondering how the heck I (or anyone else) would be able to squeeze it all in. Seven days passed in a blur of bulls and events. So I’m now apologizing for never once making it to the long bar at South Point (or any bar for that matter) to talk shop with breeders and catch up with friends. I’m sorry to everyone I didn’t have time to stop and chat with while hurrying from Point A to Point B. I’ve now realized I’d need a month in Vegas to be able to do everything I’d like to do (and take everyone up on their offers to grab a bite to eat). I did make it a point to have lunch with Rossi Hoefer though. This remarkable young lady was the recipient of the Mikel Moreno Scholarship Award and after an hour with her I was humbled by her drive and determination to not only better herself but to find a way to make raising bucking bulls part of her future. In the past, ABBI events were often held on the days that the PBR didn’t have performances. This year, everyday there were great bulls bucking somewhere that you didn’t want to miss. I’m really proud of this year’s ABBI Finals Program we produced for our exciting events. If you didn’t pick them up at one of the PBR merchandise booths or kiosks in Las Vegas, please visit abbinow.com to order your copies (you can also get the ABBI 2011 Calendar online). The support of ABBI members and fans in Vegas was phenomenal and I heard more than once that the ABBI World Champion Classic race was the race people were really excited about. That is really important for us as an industry—the average PBR fan (who is now turning into an ABBI fan) is starting to get it and is really excited by what is going on in our organization. The fact that we had two nights at the PBR World Finals that showcased ABBI Classic bulls says it all—our bulls are that good and that exciting. It was such a rush to watch our Classic bulls buck against the best cowboys in the world at Thomas & Mack. It was cool to see Bushwacker continue his winning ways and finish the season unridden by the world’s best cowboys. And despite the weather, the Futurity was awesome and everyone was on the edge of their seats from start to finish. By the time you read this, you will probably still be recovering from a big Thanksgiving dinner. I wish you and yours a safe and happy holiday season. Who knows what the future holds, but I’m actually already looking forward to the 2011 Finals. Let the new season begin…

There was a lot to celebrate in Las Vegas. The confetti marked Guilherme Marchi riding Classic contender Priceless for 90 points. Another D&H Classic bucker, Hustlin, took Robson Palermo for a 90.5 ride. Priceless finished fourth overall while Hustlin split seventh.

q

If you’re young, rambunctious and love the American Bucking Bull the ABBI’s USBBA Jr. Breeder program is for you! The sky is the limit when you become a Junior Breeder. The opportunity to raise and buck bulls, buy and buck bulls, be sponsored by a mentor with a bull you can buck, or root for your peers from the sidelines are only a small list of the opportunities available to you as a Junior Breeder. If you’re a 4-H member consider using the American Bucking Bull as an approved project. If you’re a FFA member, it’s already possible to use the American Bucking Bull as your latest approved SASE project. If you’re lined out for entering your own bull in competition, we’ve got you covered. Preparations for the 2011 Junior Breeder Futurity season are already underway so visit abbinow.com frequently to stay up-to-date as the year unfolds. Another exciting opportunity is being created for you FFA and 4-H die-hards in the way of judging. If you’ve ever judged livestock and love bucking bulls the USBBA is hard at work trying to bring a bucking bull judging contest to you. In October, USBBA attended the 2010 FFA National Convention in Indianapolis where members had an opportunity to try their hand at judging bucking bulls from videos. The booth was busy and interested FFA members kept coming. The hope is that one day this program will not only groom youth for becoming bucking bull judges but that it will also provide youth another judging opportunity at contests across the nation. Look for the terminology manual, sample classes, their placements and oral reasons coming soon AND stay tuned for more on the exciting ventures available with USBBA Junior Breeder programs!

Megan Walker has been profiled before in this column, alongside her two brothers Zane (9), Quentin (8) and a sister Amber (8). But the 17-year-old Stephenville, Texas cowgirl had such an outstanding ABBI Junior Futurity season that we thought we should wrap up the 2010 season by shining the spotlight on Megan. Megan’s parents Trevor and Rebecca Walker started their breeding program over 20 years ago. Walker Bucking Stock (Trevor is originally from Canada) have been breeding and participating in ABBI from the beginning. They were the ABBI Breeder of the Year in 2004, and although Trevor Walker and Rebecca Walker are now divorced they continue to both be active members today. Trevor, along with girlfriend and partner Joy Hawks, has Walker Bucking Stock while Rebecca is working on her own herd. Some of the Walker foundation bloodlines consist of Canadian Heritage, Vitamin Pack, and they also have some Neon Nights. With a background like that, it is probably no surprise that Megan has the knowledge and work ethic to be a successful junior breeder. Megan is a junior member who participated in all the ABBI Junior Futurities for the last three years. She also placed with a calf all three years of competition. Megan’s calf she participated with this year was Nite Ranger, a Neon Night’s grandson. Nite Ranger bucked excep-

tionally well, ultimately putting her in second place at the end of 2010 Junior Futurity Season. Nite Ranger also competed at some regular ABBI Futurities. Walker Bucking Stock regularly has bulls at PBR BFTS events and Megan has even flanked bulls at this elite level. Megan is not only involved with bulls, she also is part of the Texas High School Rodeo Association where she barrel races, breakaway ropes, runs poles, and goat-ties. She is a member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) and is extremely involved in that as well as a chapter officer. Other hobbies she has are training horses, helping with the bulls, and farming. Her favorite bull, of course, is her own- Nite Ranger. Some of Megan’s favorite things about being involved in the bucking bull business are that she likes getting to be handson and learning how the system works. She also enjoys being one of the girls in what is still a male-dominated industry, and she hopes to serves as a role model to younger girls thinking about getting involved with the ABBI Junior Futurity system. We hope you are looking forward to another great season in 2011. If you want to get involved with the ABBI Junior Futurities (as a participant or supporter), contact the ABBI office now. Have a safe and happy holiday season.

ABBI’s

Q & A:

YOUTH PROFILES

Bucking Bull Basics

Q: What does the average bull weigh?

A: The average bucking bull that competes with a rider weighs in at 1,700- 1,800 pounds. The bull very rarely weighs less than 1,200 pounds unless they are competing in the futurities with only a bucking dummy aboard. Q: What is the lifespan of a bucking bull? A: Bucking bulls often live well into their teens, which is considered geriatric for any bull. Though a bucking bull may often be in his prime as an athlete around age 5 or 6, many bulls buck past the age of 10, and when they retire from competition they are used as sires in bucking bull breeding programs. Q: What makes a bull buck? A: The success of bucking bull breeding programs around the world has proven that genetics is the most prevalent factor in determining a bull’s desire and ability to buck. One of the most common misconceptions about bull riding is that the flank strap is tied to the animal’s

testicles; this is far from the truth. This is a soft rope that is loosely tied around the bull’s midsection in the flank area and slipped onto the bull when it enters the alley to the chute. The slack is taken out of it before the ride, but not tied too tight, and the strap is removed immediately after the ride. (Todd Dewey, Las Vegas Review Journal). It has nothing to do with the genitals, as some uneducated detractors would attest. In fact, care is taken to ensure that the genitals are not involved, as that would adversely affect the performance of the bulls. The flank rope is more of an annoyance than anything else, and the bulls will kick their hind legs out at the height of their bucking action in an effort to dislodge it, resulting in a more uniform and less erratic performance.

T

he 2010 ABBI World Champion Classic Bull Bushwacker is definitely the product of a group effort stemming from the foundations of the original concept of “born to buck” programs. The brazen bucker was born in 2006 on the Flying U Ranch in Marysville, California after the Rosser/Moreno family crossed the infamous bucker Reindeer Dippin’ over cow MO 110. MO 110 came from David Fournier and into this legendary group’s program after Mikel Moreno expressed his desire to try some out-crossing in one of the industry’s longest standing breeding programs. Unfortunately Mikel passed away from a long and challenging fight with leukemia before he could fully witness the impact out-crossing would ultimately have on the Flying U family’s historical legacy. Flying U Rodeo has been in the rodeo production business for over 50 years and has become synonymous with showmanship, creativity and fan-flare that is second to none. For the past several decades Cotton Rosser and the Rosser family have worked hard to make Flying U Rodeo a premiere rodeo business. The company’s flamboyance and spectacular showmanship skills often spear-headed by Rosser’s daughter Cindy have been the pivotal opening act for numerous high-profile venues like the National Finals Rodeo, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Grand National Rodeo in San Francisco among a slew of others. Cotton Rosser grew up in Long Beach, California and talks freely about growing up watching and mimicking the showmanship and style of western icons like Gene Autry and Hop-along Cassidy. “During the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s stock contractors had a lot of class and flare for showmanship. The pageantry and color that you saw back in rodeo’s heyday at places like Madison Square Garden in New York, Boston, Chicago, Houston and Ft. Worth is something Flying U has tried to always present. The idea is to keep those fans entertained because if you don’t they will go somewhere else,” explained the living legend. Ty Murray has many tales from the trail and some of the best ones come from early in his career. When talking about Flying U Rodeo and Cotton Rosser his memories are as colorful as Rosser himself. “The very first pro rodeo I ever went to was a Flying U rodeo and I had just barely turned 18. I won the bareback riding and didn’t know I was supposed to do a victory lap. I got done and went back behind the chutes and Cotton came over there horse-back hollering “dang it kid, get out here and take that victory lap” and then he asked “can you even ride a horse son”, Murray laughed. “You know he calls everybody son and I’d won 5 or 6 all around titles before he ever called me Ty.”

In its attempt to continue its never-ending drive for improvement, the ABBI welcomed its newest member to the board of directors while in Las Vegas at the World Finals. Heavily decorated bucking bull breeder and rodeo icon Cindy Rosser was elected as the board’s Secretary/ Treasurer and promises to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. Rosser who secretaried her first rodeo at age 15 and has been an avid and successful barrel racer since she was a child admitted that the nomination came as a surprise. “I was shocked and wasn’t expecting it at all,” said a shocked Rosser. “Being nominated is definitely an honor. I really appreciate that they think that highly of me and that they thought I was right for the position.” Rosser who is no doubt qualified to serve on the board is expected to bring decades of experience and a fresh perspective to an already thriving board. The California native cut her teeth on the boot straps of pro rodeo and is the daughter of Cotton Rosser legendary founder and owner of west coast based Flying U Rodeo Co. Cotton Rosser, synonymous with rodeo pageantry and public appeal, is also a long standing pillar in the rodeo community and well-respected as an elite stockman. Some of the prestigious stock awards the family has garnered include PRCA world titles and NFR event titles for their rough stock including Bareback and Saddle Bronc horses Classic Velvet, Short Fuse, Buckskin Velvet, Skoal Sally, Angel Blue and I’m No Angel, as well as bovine buckers Reindeer Dippin’, Troubadour and 202 Bring It who won Bull of the NFR last year. While Rosser may be surprised by the nomination, industry insiders saw her as an easy and perfect fit on the ABBI board. After all she was named Secretary of the Year in the PRCA in 1985, served on the WPRA

When speaking about Rosser’s style and persona Murray had no trouble articulating what the showman is all about. “Cotton is definitely a character. It’s almost like he fell in love with the sport when he was young and he’s never lost sight of what made him fall in love with it--and that in itself is pretty amazing.” Still all the showmanship and grandeur

in the world can’t completely fool an audience and the Rosser family relies on the quality and caliber of their bucking stock by acknowledging that great stock is truly the heart of any contracting business. The Rosser family is one of the original rodeo companies to implement and truly breed rodeo livestock from a “born to buck” belief. They have been breeding some

of the best broncs, bareback horses and bucking bulls for generations and have successfully been able to furnish a free-flowing river of livestock to fill a successful and thriving contracting business. Over the years, Flying U purchased many sour saddle horses that went on to buck professionally including PRCA Bareback Horse of the

Year winners Short Fuse (1964) and Classic Velvet (1981-82). More impressive are some of the broncs that were truly bred to buck on the Flyin U Ranch like Skoal Sally, Angel Blue (1985-89 PRCA Saddle Bronc of the Year) and her super flashy son I’m No Angel who was eventually retired and buried on Ty Murray’s ranch. “I loved both I’m No Angel and his mom Angel Blue. They were both fantastic and really neat looking horses. Angel Blue was really rank and a horse that you could win first on every time if you could ride her and ride her well.

board for approximately 20 years, put on the opening ceremonies for the NFR for 11 years and also won the WPRA Coca Cola Woman of the Year award in 1995. In addition she was a California Circuit Finalist 14 years in a row and their Barrel Racing Champion in 1982. Behind the scenes she’s also been a very successful event promoter. She co-produced the Reno Rope and Barrel Horse Sale held in conjunction with the Reno Rodeo for 3 years and the Barrel Horse Futurity for 11. Rosser is also currently in the process of producing her third ABBI Best of the West Sale and has plans to produce the 2nd Annual ABBI Clovis Futurity and Classic. With all the accomplishments and awards, Rosser is amazing when she talks about what to her is the greatest thing she’s done. “To tell you the truth, the best thing I ever accomplished was having Mikel. Being his mother is what I’m the most proud of. After all it was Mikel who initiated bringing in outcrosses to our herd and because of that Bushwacker came to be,” said Rosser referring to family’s latest accomplishment of being awarded with their second ABBI Breeder of the Year title. With all of these accomplishments, it’s hard to imagine Rosser still has more she’d like to do, specifically as an ABBI Board Member. “My first order of business and priority as a board member is the breeders trust program. We’ve got to fix it and make it right for everybody. The ABBI Breeders Trust is very important to all of us. It’s important to the breeders, the registry and the American Bucking Bull breed. We’ve got to make it simpler, easier to understand and something that everyone can appreciate and see the value of. Ultimately I’d like to see everyone that has an eligible bull participate. As it is, people just don’t understand it and we have got to really work to fix that. My hope is to see it become bigger and better, and become what it was originally intended to be. When it comes to the Breeders Trust, I want the smaller breeder to understand that it’s another way to generate earnings for any bull that is competing. It makes calves more valuable and that’s something the industry could really use right now. Once we get that back on track I think we need to start doing more things to promote the ABBI. I’d really like to see more 3 year old events. I would really like to see a finals for the 3-year-olds and hopefully with some work and effort we will be able to continue creating more opportunities for all breeders.”

I’m No Angel was a really great horse to ride and super flashy. I think there was more money won on him than his mother because she’d get a lot of guys on the ground or they’d have trouble with her in the chute,” said Murray. While the family’s been raising bucking horses since the late 60’s, their bucking bull program came about through Cindy Rosser and then husband Julio Moreno. Moreno’s day to day time spent entrenched in the business sparked a deep desire to breed bulls that were also born to buck. Moreno’s interest in the bull industry really peeked in the late 80’s and has come a long way from its start. Initially the bull side of Flying U’s program began with NFR bulls Copenhagen One Eye, Copenhagen Smiley and 74 Dodge Ram Tough over some cross-bred heifers that he and Cindy purchased from Cotton. The subsequent heifers from

26

this cross were then mated to 7-time NFR and 5-time PBR Finals bull 97 Whitewater Skoal, one of the industry’s most influential sires. Additionally H7 Typhoon, also a multi-time NFR bull was used to round out an ever-evolving bucking bull program that would later produce bulls like Reindeer Dippin’, Werewolf, Charlie Bullware, Troubadour (ABBI’s 2007 World Champion Classic bull and 2007 PBR Bull of the Finals) and now the super-sensational Reindeer son Bushwacker. Moreno also an 11-time NFR Team Roping qualifier partnered with Richard Oliveira on Bushwacker and it wasn’t long before the bull took the industry by storm. Only one year after Troubadour landed the Flying U family their first ABBI Breeder of the Year title in 2007, Bushwacker qualified for the 2008 ABBI Futurity Finals. In 2009 he was the ABBI Reserve

The American Bucking Bull q Nov/Dec 2010

Wild Card Champion and finished 3rd overall in the Classic Finals. This success launched the bull into his 2010 ABBI Classic season as a 4-year old. He not only won the year end classic race and the ABBI World Champion Classic title but was also a strong contender in the 2010 PBR Bucking Bull of the Year race. Murray who was also the last rider to straddle Flying U’s super-producing bull Whitewater Skoal in 2002 at the Bakersfield PBR before the bull’s retirement shared his thoughts about the people responsible for bringing Bushwacker to the table. “You are talking about a group of people that have been dedicated to the sport heavily for a lot of years. Flying U Rodeo, the Rosser family, Cindy Rosser and Julio Moreno have understood the importance of breeding programs for a long time. They have a real passion

and love for the sport and also a passion for trying to raise the best animals they could. They have raised some of the greatest that there has ever been--and some very famous ones at that. It looks to me like they still have some more famous ones coming down the pipe with that sort of potential too,” said Murray. “Looking back now they already seem legendary but as time goes on you will see their legendary status as breeders become even more profound.” While the Flying U family, Cotton Rosser, Cindy Rosser and Julio Moreno enjoy their second ABBI Breeder of the Year title, the industry can reflect on the legendary accomplishments that both the family and their livestock have accumulated over the years which will surely seal their place in rodeo and born to buck history. 2010 Horizon Breeder of the Year: Mike White

I think Mike White thought I was pulling his leg when I told him he was Horizon Breeder of the Year. At the conclusion of the 2010 ABBI Futurity Finals, I went up to Jerry Tuttle and Billy Jaynes to congratulate them on their big $100,000 win with Ragin J.T. I then went to talk

28

to White, whose breeding program the ABBI Futurity World Champion came out of. “I won Horizon Breeder, really?” White questioned. Yes, I confirmed. “I can’t believe it,” said a stunned White. “This is something I’ve been working toward for the last decade. What an honor. This is

something you dream about. ” That is a pretty impressive statement coming from someone who has spent the last 15 years in the spotlight as one of the country’s best bull riders. Despite all of his professional accomplishments on the backs of bulls, the great White was floored by winning an award

for breeding bulls. White, a Louisiana native, now makes his home with wife Hannah and son Logan on their ranch just outside of DeKalb, Texas White retired from bull riding at the Kansas City Built Ford Tough Series event this year. After a long and decorated career, “Mighty Mike” was done riding bulls. The 1999 PRCA World Champion had won nearly 50 titles over the course of his professional career. When the PBR star left the arena, the fans stood in respect and awe of the great athlete. What many of the cheering fans in the stand didn’t know that day in March was that White had already started a second-career, as a successful bucking bull breeder. About 11 years ago, White acquired Pretty Boy Floyd from Don and Janelle Kish. What started out as an enjoyable hobby soon transitioned into a serious business as White started

30

researching genetics and deciding how to best develop his herd. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Jim Anderson and H.D. and Dillon Page,” shared White of his influential mentors. “Jim bent over backwards helping me with breeding bulls and crossing up my genetics with some of his cows,” White explained. “H.D. helped me by sending me some of their breeding bulls to use. “I’ve told them how much their help has meant to me, but I don’t think they really get it—I mean it when I say I couldn’t be at this point in such a short amount of time with my program if not for them. They have helped me tremendously.” White has Mr. T in all his cows and Mossy Oak Mudslinger and Backlash in his program. “I also have some Berger cows that have come from Jim. I’ve kind of crossed up a bunch between H.D.’s program and Jim’s program,” he

explained. White also bred to Anderson’s 546. “That bull himself wasn’t anything special, but he’s raised a lot of good bulls.” Last year, White sold his yearling bull calves to The Jaynes Gang and 8CD, LLC (Chad Ducey, Craig Ducey and Jim Carrigan). Ragin JT was among them. Ragin JT is a 159 Shaggy son (out of 665 Yellow Wasp) and out of a Coffey cow, Elle Mae. The 27 yearlings were bucked and most were put in the Exclusive Genetics Auction Ring and MEGA-Genetics sale. “Billy (Jaynes) buys my yearling bull calves every year,” White explained. “He has really helped me out by getting my bulls out there.” Even though White sells his yearlings regardless, he wasn’t terribly impressed by the looks of Ragin JT. “After I weaned Ragin JT off his momma, I really didn’t like the looks of him,” said White honestly. “So I consigned his momma in the Spring Spectacular Sale.”

qq

q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q

About half way through this year when Ragin JT started showing off his sizeable talent, White tried to buy the cow back. It turned out, the owner had bid online and he bid on the wrong cow. “It wasn’t the cow he meant to buy,” said White, “so he traded her off when he got her.” White is still trying to locate Elle Mae and get her back to breed or flush to. “We started his dad right here at the house,” said White of Ragin JT’s sire Shaggy. He was a really good spinner, but he wasn’t a great bull by any means. He went to a few PBR events and they were like 86 points on him.” Ironically, Ragin JT was the yearling that didn’t get sold easily. He had been for sale in a few Exclusive auctions before Jerry Tuttle saw video of the yearling and was impressed. Despite not having much kick, Tuttle liked how Ragin JT turned back right away and thought the bull had enormous heart and potential. Tuttle, who is involved with NASCAR and Childress racing, already owned some bucking bulls but didn’t have a ranch nor the time to haul bulls. After getting Ragin JT for just $6,500, Tuttle turned to his buddy Jaynes to see if he’d want to come in as a partner on the bull and to haul and house the latest addition to his herd. Jaynes came in as a partner and even talked Tuttle out of selling Ragin JT when he got frustrated with being “near the top but never winning.” “Billy told me, if you sell him and some other guy leaves Las Vegas with $100,000 check—how would that feel?” shared Tuttle. Tuttle then knew his gut instinct about the bull was correct and he had faith big things would happen. “I’m sure glad I listened to Billy!” Even with Ragin JT’s success, White plans to continue to sell off his yearling crop each year to Jaynes rather than competing with his bulls himself. “I’ll just continue to raise my bulls and then just haul and train bulls for other people.” Despite nearly $1.5 million in prize money over the course of his PBR career, White acknowledges that a big herd takes big money— and he’s not that rich. “I spend all my money in the roping arena,” chuckled White, “not the bucking bull arena. I’d love to play the game with the big boys but I can’t afford my roping habit and a bucking bull habit. So I’ll continue to sell my yearlings and enjoy watching other people compete with them at Futurity and Classic events.” “I have about 75 head of bucking cows and that is about where I want to be at,” he explained.”I’m also partners with Jim on his stuff and he probably raises about 50-60 bull calves a year, so between my herd and his herd I have my hands full.” White was nervous watching Ragin JT buck at the ABBI Futurity Finals. “When I saw Black Betty buck I was nervous he could beat JT. That bull was outstanding and looked good, and if he had won I couldn’t complain. But I wanted JT to win, regardless of whether or not I got an award,” said White. “It is so special to see a bull you raised go on to do so good.” White got out of riding bucking bulls when he longer was passionate about it. Now he is passionate about raising bulls. The bucking bull industry will continue to benefit from the considerable talent of Mighty Mike White. The American Bucking Bull q Nov/Dec 2010

Mikel Moreno Scholarship Award: Rossi Hoefer

by Susan Bedford

Mikel, the late son of Julio Moreno and Cindy Rosser, was a successful bucking bull breeder, talented athlete and allaround amazing person. After losing his long battle with leukemia in 2006, his parents established the Mikel Moreno Award. The award helps other junior breeders follow their own college dreams, a goal that Mikel never got to achieve.

q

so surprised and honored. I was on my way to work driving when I found out and was just freaking out,” shared the teenager. Rossi and her younger brother, Thor Jr., have their own herd of bucking cattle. They also have two younger half-sisters who will probably also get into the bull business when they are old enough. “We are planning to start competing at Futurity events next season,” shared Rossi.Their herd began with a bred cow from Alex Naccarato. They now have a herd of 10 with plans to expand and have genetics from Steve and Julie Ravenscroft and Chad Berger. Her eventual goal is to have bulls at the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series and “hopefully in the PBR short round someday!” The senior at Priest River Lamanna High School has worked since she was 14. Despite having waitressing shifts three to four days a week, she has a B average and is actively involved with helping out with her dad’s bucking cattle herd. Rossi drove from Idaho to Las Vegas to accept the award in person at the PBR/ABBI Awards Banquet on October 24. She also helped her dad while in Las Vegas by driving out to the Legends Ranch to feed and care for the family’s bulls. Rossi missed her Senior Homecoming in order to attend the Award Banquet. “I was really nervous before I went on stage at the ban-

Rossi Hoefer is the fourth recipient of the Mikel Moreno Scholarship Award. Last year, it was awarded to Taylor Hurst. In 2008, Bryn Agnew earned the honor and the inaugural award went to Jonathan Chandler. “She (Rossi) wrote quite an essay about herself and Mikel. It was heartwarming,” said Cindy Rosser of the winning scholarship application. “I also had another person read the applications, so I also took their opinion into account.” “I grew up around the Rosser family, so this honor means even more to me knowing Mikel’s story and his family,” shared Rossi. The 16-year-old considers Oakdale, Calif. home although she currently resides with her father, ABBI breeder Thor Hoefer, in Idaho. She is the granddaughter of 8-time NFR Saddle Bronc qualifier Bill Martinelli. “I’m sad the award exists, because it is because we lost Mikel. But I am so grateful and thankful to him and the legacy he left behind. His passion for the bucking bull industry will continue to inspire so many young breeders like myself and to help us to go to college and reach our dreams,” Rossi explained. Rossi will be attending Herrington College in the Fall. “I want to be a dental hygienist,” she explained. “I want a career that will allow me to still have cattle and to be a full-time bucking bull breeder and be able to haul them to Futurities and Classics.” Rossi first heard about the award from her grandmother, and then she went to the ABBI website (abbinow.com) to learn more about it and submitted her application. “I found out just a few weeks later (that I won) and I was

quet. So few people get this opportunity and it meant so much to me,” she explained. Besides Mikel, Rossi counts her grandfather as her hero and is also quick to credit her dad for the impact he has had on her life. “My grandmother (Kay Martinelli) is probably my biggest supporter,” said Rossi. “She is always behind me 100% in anything I do.” Rossi is a young women who has many people singing her praises, however she is the one who is quick to offer thanks and praise to others. “I would like to thank Cindy Rosser, Cotton Rosser, Sugar Kuhn, Susan Bedford, Julio Moreno, Tater Porter, Wrangler, ABBI, and the PBR for everything they did for me at the World Finals,” shared Rossi after the banquet. “It means the world to me to have such wonderful people in my life, and even when they had so many things going on in Las Vegas, they still managed to help me out.”

q

Las Vegas, Nevada

by Sugar Kuhn photos by Andy Watson

Andee Lamoreaux, Brad Boyd, Richard Oliveira and Julio Moreno

The culmination of the 2010 ABBI Classic season reached its pinnacle during the world finals in Las Vegas. The much anticipated annual event for ABBI Classic bull owners brought the top 40 regular season bulls (by season earnings totals) and an additional 4 last minute wild card qualifiers to the competition block. These 40 bulls competed in rounds 1 and 4 of the PBR World Finals under the world’s craftiest riders. During Wednesday’s round 1 competition Julio Moreno & Richard Oliveira’s year-end winner Bushwacker landed on top after polishing off Harve Stewart. The bull marked a 90.75 which gave him the early lead by 1.75 points ahead of second place bull and wild card qualifier Bad Blake from Lightning C Cattle. Black, ABBI veteran Priceless from D&H Cattle and L&E Bucking Bulls and Moon from Jackson, Holmes, Robinson & Baker both put up 88.25 point marks to tie for third and fourth place during the first round battle. Lightning C Cattle took another top 5 slot in the initial war with their white campaigner Wine Hu after he posted an 88.00 underneath rider Paulo Lima. Boyd-Floyd & Cunningham’s Minor Incident and Ace of Spades & the Pit Boss Syndication matched marks of 87.75 to nab the sixth and seven slots in the first round of competition. Smoke from Cody Ohl & Ken and Tex Beshear was scored an 87.50 after being unsuccessfully straddled by Kasey Hayes which tied him up for eighth and ninth place with Womanizer from Holmes, Baker & Robinson. Rounding out the top ten during round 1 was another even pair of 87 marks for 3-year-old Fender Bender son Back Bender from Ackerman & Cox and J.W. Hart, Switch House Ranch and Mick Plummer’s stealthy bovine Flirting With Disaster. Those classic bulls lucky enough to land in the top 20 positions took a couple nights off before returning for one last duel during round 4 on Saturday night’s much anticipated event. During the bull draft Jody Newberry anted up and selected Bushwacker and although his attempt was unsuccessful his effort helped Bushwacker to a world championship via another big mark of 92.75 points for the bovine. This mark coupled with the bull’s round 1 90.75 made him the only bull to gather not only one 90-point out but two during the classic world final contest. With a total of 183.50 points from his two showings Bushwacker easily sealed up the world title and the $250,000 win. His success also gave Flying U, Cotton Rosser, Cindy Rosser and Julio Moreno their second ABBI Breeder of the Year title. Second place during this second round of classic competition was

a tie between Teague Bucking Bulls wild card qualifier Bad Medicine and D&H Cattle Co.’s Hustler son 66T Hustlin each marking 89.75. Bad Medicine’s total of 176.50 on two outs gave him a fifth place finish overall and Hustlin’s 175.50 total pushed him into an event finish for a threeway tie in the seventh place slot. Jackson, Holmes, Robinson & Baker’s blond bomber Moon bounced back under Mike Lee in the second go with an 89 point out making his 177.25 point total enough to tie with Lightning C Cattle’s Bad Blake for second overall and checks for each owner for over $67,000. Moon was not the only bull to net an 89.00 during the second round of fierce competition. Boyd-Floyd & LaRue’s proven powerhouse Lil’ Red Cat bucked off L.J. Jenkins for an 89.00 and Jeff Robinson’s Powerline 36

mimicked the marking also posting an 89.00 score. Ultimately each lined up beside D&H’s Hustlin’ in a three-way tie for an overall finish for seventh. D&H and L&E Bucking Bulls’ bucker Priceless and Cody Ohl and Ken & Tex Beshear’s Pure Smoke both were marked an 88.75 for their second out efforts sealing a fourth place payout of nearly $25,000 for Priceless and a sixth place finish for Pure Smoke. The three bulls completing the top ten during the second round of competition were Ace of Spades & the Pit Boss Syndication’s Pit Boss, Womanizer from Holmes, Baker & Robinson and Ackerman & Cox’s Back Bender each marking 87.50 giving Pit Boss a tenth overall position, Womanizer an eleventh finish and Back Bender twelfth.

Las Vegas, Nevada

by Susan Bedford

Over 150 2-year-olds came to Stephenville for the ABBI Futurity Las Vegas Qualifier in hopes of earning a coveted slot to the ABBI World Finals. Any competitor who had earned points during the regular season was eligible to compete. When the last bull had bucked in Texas in early October, many of the season’s top performers had finished out of the top 30 slots and wouldn’t be making the trip to Nevada. Ragin JT from Jerry Tuttle and The Jaynes Gang was the top-scoring bull in Stephenville. Coming into Las Vegas, it looked like he might be the bull to beat. In his last eight trips, he’d never finished less than fourth and in his last four outs, he’d never scored less than an 88.25.

The morning of October 22 was like the most of the days that week—rainy with a chance of thunderstorms. No one could remember the last time there was weather like that during Finals. Every year it seems it’s either hotter or colder than you’d expect in Las Vegas—but no one could remember a year where it rained day after day. The drizzle started mid-morning, but that didn’t deter the crowd that packed the seating 38

at the PBR Fan Zone at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The ABBI Futurity Finals was about to start and despite the weather everyone was in good spirits. Dedicated fans looking to stay dry watched from the parking garage adjacent to the outdoor arena. By the fifth bull out, the whole crowd had witnessed thunder and lightning—but of the bovine kind. Ragin JT put on a fantastic performance and the judges marked him a 22.75.

Now it would just be a matter of waiting to see if any bull could beat the Jerry Tuttle/Jayne’s Gang stand-out. After a brief rain delay, which affected the TV cameras more than the ground condition, the action continued. Paul Daniel’s Black Betty and Jimmy Crowther/Johnny Monger’s Sham-Wow (formerly known as just 803) both looked like they could pose a threat to the leader, but ultimately the Houdini grandsons came

up a quarter-point shy of stealing the $100,000 prize. They split the reserve title and each took home $29,344. ABBI Futurity Champion Ragin JT came out of Mike White’s breeding program. “Chad Ducey bought all of Mike White’s yearling bull calves and Chad put him (Ragin JT) up for sale a couple of times before, but no one bought 40

him,” explained Tuttle. “The first time I saw him, I thought ‘I like him. I want him.’ I was the only person who bid on the calf and then they called and told me Chad would knock $1,000 off the reserve if I would take him. And that is how I got him!” Tuttle bought Ragin JT for just $6,500. After Las Vegas, the bull had earned over $134,000

for the year. “It was like finding a needle in a haystack.” Tuttle’s statement is probably true, but he also deserves the credit for having an eye sharp enough to spot that needle. “When they put him in the chute he had the intensity,” recalled Tuttle of seeing video of Ragin JT. “When they opened the gate he would turn right out of the gate. He didn’t have a lot

Rounding out the top five was Duty Calls from the Torres Bros. with a 22 worth $13,500. “I really want to thank all of the breeders who hauled their bulls to Las Vegas to participate and everyone who turned out to support this event,” said ABBI General Manger Andee Lamoreaux. Despite the weather, the event went off without much of a hitch thanks to the outstanding arena crew. Bo Davis was in charge of PBR University, the arena where the Futurity was held. His team and the ABBI staff worked together and, despite Mother Nature, produced an outstanding event.

ABBI Leaves Lasting Impression on 55,000 Future Farmers of America While most of the ABBI’s staff was on location in Las Vegas during the World Finals, Marlissa Gonzalez and Alyssa Parga were attending the Future Farmers of America’s National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Gonzalez and Parga both experienced FFA’s symbolic blue jackets filling the streets of Indianapolis during this year’s annual convention which drew over 55,000 attendees. “Future Farmers of America” which was founded by a group of young farmers back in 1928, has always relied on their mission to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. From its inception, FFA has taught that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting—it’s a science, it’s a business and it’s an art. FFA continues to help future generations rise up to meet those challenges by helping its members to develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of career pathways. American Bucking Bull Inc. and many other high-profile companies like RFD-TV, Wrangler, American Stockman, Purina and hundreds of oth-

er agricultural based business groups were on hand in the Indianapolis Convention Center for the FFA Career Show, which was tailored toward FFA students and their advisors. The ABBI booth was extremely busy with students and advisors who tried their hand at judging a class of ABBI Futurity Bulls bucking in competition on video, in a format similar to the traditional livestock judging contests that FFA is known for. Once interested parties entered the booth it was an intellectual feast about the ins and outs of the ABBI and the opportunities available for youngsters.

Preparing for the Calving Season Now that the world finals are over and everyone is back at home with chores on their minds I thought it might be a good time to prepare a little for the upcoming calving season. Yes, it’s right around the corner for you early birds planning to have that next champion. Even though, as a general rule most of the calves of bucking stock heritage are small in birth weight, occasionally a mal-presentation will occur that will impede proper delivery. Here are some tips about how to decide what is normal and abnormal when it comes to parturition or the calving process.

Diagram of proper calf positioning in the reproductive tract during stage two of a normal delivery

WHAT IS NORMAL? Normal is all about presentation and birth weight. Most of the time when we get into issues of delayed or prolonged deliveries, calf weight and/or size is the actual problem. In these cases there is simply not enough room in the pelvis for everything to move through. Parturition or calving is a continuous act. There should be a normal progression of activity until the calf is delivered. There may be a delay during certain stages, but the delay should not be prolonged and the natural progression of delivery should continue. For instance once the “water bag” is noticed part of a foot should be showing within ten or fifteen minutes. Or, if both feet are showing, a nose should appear shortly. Seven out of ten calving cases are normal presentation with the front feet and head presenting first. In two out of ten calving cases the rear feet may present first which is also considered a normal presentation. Mal-presentation is when any other presentation occurs and when trouble begins.

ABNORMAL DELIVERY Many things can affect the birthing process. As mentioned earlier calf size and weight is usually the biggest problem in difficult de-

44

liveries. Mal-presentations are most often due to the fact that the calf is too large to exit the cow’s pelvis. For instance, when a calf’s head is turned back, there is not enough room in the pelvis for both of the calf’s limbs and head, so the head rotates back as it contacts the pelvic rim. The same thing can occur when a leg is turned back, there is just not enough room in the pelvis for both legs and the head so the last thing to pop up gets turned back. It should also be noted that a calf’s weight and size can be normal for one cow but abnormal for another cow that has a narrow or small pelvis. A breech delivery (butt first) is not necessarily a positioning problem caused by a lack of pelvic diameter. This presentation is more often a development issue which occurs as the calf is developing in the uterus. If a calf is not positioned correctly and grows to the point that size impacts his ability to turn into the proper position for normal birthing, breech presentation can occur. When we notice a cow straining continually with fetal membranes showing and nothing else, breech presentation is likely the issue. Delivery of a breech calf presentation requires more expertise and repositioning the calf is greatly facilitated by the use of epidural anesthesia in the cow. Another presentation in which no obvi-

The American Bucking Bull q Nov/Dec 2010

ous calf structures are present is when the calf lies sideways in the uterus. Although rare, this position is an enormous challenge for even the most experienced individual to deliver. In many cases this condition will go unnoticed until the calf has started to deteriorate or even expired. The final thing regarding presentation and birthing that I want to discuss is twinning. It’s common for the first calf to present back feet first. Most twins are usually smaller than single birth calves. If you have to assist a cow and deliver a calf, especially when the back feet present first, always check the tract after the first calf is delivered to make sure there is not a second calf present.

WHEN TO ASSIST This is a very controversial subject and everyone has an opinion regarding when intervention should occur. In my mind, there is a definite difference in the time it should take a heifer and the time it should take a mature cow to deliver. Routinely, I advise clients to give a first calf heifer at least 2 hours to initiate and progress through labor. The heifer should progress with her labor development at a slow but consistent pace. If at any time calving stages stop for more than 2 hours intervention should occur. In other words if a foot is show-

q

qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq q

ing for 2 hours and nothing else is happening (no nose or a second foot) then there should be an evaluation of the process. Intervention with mature cows should occur when no new signs of normal labor progression have been noted and more than an hour has past. Still, all of this is relative since many of us do not have the good fortune to be sitting there at the initiation of labor. That being said, if you find a cow calving and she looks like she is worn out and no additional progression of labor is occurring, intervention is in order. It is better to be over cautious than to wait all day only to deliver a dead calf come nightfall. Finally please realize this feature is not a complete guide to cow parturition and that many other problems can occur during calf delivery that were not mentioned in this feature.

This is merely a discussion of some of the most common issues that occur and meant as a brief overview for identifying normal and abnormal birthing situations. If you would like to see more in this column about calving, surgical assistance and other means to help with a calf delivery problem please contact me at elginbullvet@yahoo.com. A Blast from the Past q q q q q q q q by Sugar Kuhn with Ty Murray

In the American Bucking Bull’s nostalgic series Blast from the Past, veterans of the sport share short notes from the past about prestigious venues, bad buckers and some of the most accomplished riders who pursued both. In this Blast from the Past, PBR co-founder and 7-time World Champion Ty Murray and I reminisced about his five unsuccessful attempts to cover Dan Russell’s big, strong handful of a bucker White Lightening.

q “He was a rank, rank, rank bull. He was big, strong and never did the same thing twice. He’s the only bull I can ever remember hearing myself grunt while I was riding. He was just that tough and every time I got on him he beat me fair and square--and every one of those times I gave it everything I had. He’s the only bull in my entire career that I would ever have had that many tries at and not gotten him rode. He had a lot of forward movement and he had some serious rolls and he’d get you strung out on the end of your arm. In this picture you can see he’s rolling me into my hand. He’d just do whatever it took. He’d always throw you to your vulnerable side and he’d always jump away from you. He really hated having you on his back and he knew how to eliminate that problem,” shared Ty. Growing up on the west coast, I certainly remember those Russell bulls like Pacific Bell (who was named after the phone company jingle “reach out and touch someone”). And true to the Western Rodeos style Pac Bell’s pen-mate White Lightening followed suit in his distaste for riders. “He was mean and kinda psychotic really—and he’d hook the fire out of you. I rode him like 7.5 seconds at the NFR-that was the closest I ever came to riding him. When he bucked me off he hung me up for a jump--long enough for me to get to my feet--and in mid-air he was trying to turn around and hook me, but when he did, he fell flat on his side and that’s the only reason I got away. ” Most stock contractors like to see their bulls win. It’s even sweeter when it’s against one of the all time greats and it’s repetitive—and as you may have guessed, Dan Russell didn’t miss an opportunity to razz Murray about his in-ability to cover White Lightening. “Dan always used to love to tease me and have that over my head that I couldn’t ride White Lightening. As a matter of fact he gave me a picture of one of those outs and he wrote right across it “0-6” even though I only got on him 5—and then Dan would just laugh over it. Every time I had him I would think that this was going to be the time I’d ride him, but it never happened. He was a bad cat.”

White Lightening Status: Deceased ABBI Registry #: 10000750 Owner: Danny & Linda Russell/Russell Ranches, LLC/Western Rodeos, Inc. ABBI Registered Offspring: 35 Noteworthy Descendants: Little Lightening, Lightening Strike, Lightening Returns, White Lies Known Career Outs: over 200 Known Qualified Rides: 2 known Charlie Sampson and Terry Don West who rode him in Anaheim at a BRO for 93 points Awards: Although White Lightening never won any titles it wasn’t because he didn’t deserve it. White Lightening traveled among some of the industry’s toughest and rankest bulls on record. Unfortunately for him his pen mates came in the form of Pacific Bell and Grass Hopper who ultimately covered him up for bull of the year recognition on multiple occasions.

D&H Cattle Bred to Buck Classic ABBI Classic, Ardmore, Oklahoma

Recap and Photos by Allen Glanville

August 28, 2010

Kent Cox accepts his winning buckle from Dillon Page

Mini Jr. Bull Riding Champion, Tristan Mize

The ABBI teamed up with D&H Cattle Co. for the Classic event of the season at the Hardy Murphy Facility in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Thirtyeight bulls traveled to this event, some from South Dakota, Kansas, and Nebraska all looking for money to qualify for the ABBI Finals. The pen of bulls was outstanding, but the riders were not up to the task with only three qualified rides. The judging was tight and it took a score of 87.5 just to place, leaving 10 or more bulls one point or less outside the money. Each year the bar is lifted in the Classic competition. I guess we were given a sneak preview earlier this year in Ardmore with the ABBI Derby, where over 80 bulls entered and they were amazing. Julio Moreno/Richard Oliveria’s bull MO 350 13/6 Bushwacker hit a grand slam with a score of 93.75 outscoring his competition by 3.25 points.. It’s hard to get MO 350 shown at the Built Ford Tough Series events, let alone a Touring Pro since most riders can’t get past 2 seconds on him. Flankman Kent Cox remarked, “MO 350 only gets better each time we buck him and I don’t think you could ask anymore from a bull like he was today. He gave me everything he had. We are going to just

keep doing what we have all season and hope it all comes together in Vegas.” Second place went to 22S Priceless, owned by D&H Cattle Co/ L&E Bulls with 90.5 and third was 24S Best Ever, owned by D&H Cattle CO with 90. The Pages (Dillon, H.D., Johnna and the entire Page crew) took care of everyone’s needs and did an outstanding job. The Pages presented the winner of this event with a custom-made pair of spurs to go with the ABBI buckle. The turnout for this event was tremendous, probably the largest crowd I have seen at this facility. The Junior cowboys on mini bulls gave the crowd plenty to cheer about with half of the bulls getting covered. Tristan Mize of Brian, Texas was the champion for this event, riding his bull for 84 points. Mize took us through his ride, “I had a nice bull tonight that jumped, kicked and got me pulled over the front, but I got my butt back under me and got lucky.” Mize was enjoying his ride so much that at seven seconds he began waving to his buddies.

Wilburn Bucking Bulls, winners of the Ardmore Futurity

D&H Cattle Co. added an ABBI Futurity to their Classic event at the Hardy Murphy Arena, located in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Even though it was late in the futurity season, 43 three bulls showed up to compete— many for the first time. Wilburn Bucking Bull’s 861 Flash dominated the competition with his 87.75 point score. 861’s quickness was something to admire along with his buck and kick. Two of the judges gave 861 a 4.75 spin score and one gave him a 5.0 for intensity. All who were watching knew what the ‘wow’ factor was all about. Becky Wilburn remarked about 861, “We bucked 861 as a yearling and he showed much potential, having what it takes to be competitive. He is a very intense bucker with lots of speed that everyone could see today. He has a white tip on his tail and when Rank

Second place bull 15U Momma’s Night Out, owned by D&H Cattle CO scored 85.75 and third was Craig, Terrell and Baker’s 821 Super Cool Cat with 83.5. Wilburn backed up 861’s win with their bull 830 Pen Breaker who finished fourth with 76. This event was added at just the right time for many who were hoping their bull would show enough skill to enter the big ABBI futurity qualifier coming up in Stephenville, Texas on October 1.

Riley Bucking Bulls/Teague Bucking Bulls’ Austin Nights underneath rider Josh Faircloth winning the Classic event title

The Annual Jerome Davis Invitational was held on September 3-4. Also an ABBI Classic event, some of the country’s best 3 and 4-year-old buckers turned out for the North Carolina event. Riley Bucking Bulls/Teague Bucking Bulls, LLC. won the 12th annual event when Austin Nights was the high scoring bull of round one with an 89. In round two, he earned an 88.25. His 177.25 total was worth almost $5,400 and he beat out 32 other bulls for the honor. Jeff Robinson’s RMEF Elk County was the reserve champion with a total score of 176, paying out $3,083. Event hosts Jerome and Tiffany Davis had the third place bucker Hard Rock, who finished just a quarter-point behind Elk Country. Austin Riley purchased half-interest in 6459 Austin Nights at the 2008 Teague Bucking Bulls, “Big Time Teague Sale in Texas.” The event champion is sired by Neon Night and out of a Little Yellow Jacket daughter. Clovis Fall Spectacular Classic ABBI Classic, Clovis, California

By Sugar Kuhn Photos by Gus Reyes

September 5, 2010

Cindy Rosser presents the winning buckle to Julio Moreno for his bull Junior’s classic win

September 5 was a big day for the west coast’s ABBI Classic bull owners. The Clovis Fall Spectacular in Clovis, California was the location of the season’s only California classic of the season. The event drew 17 entries from enthusiastic breeders and paid out over $8,500 in prize money. Cindy Rosser of Flying C Livestock, and Francis and Stan Dandy of Sis and Stan Bucking Bulls put in much time and effort to make this a very successful event. Their group effort was obvious by the turn out and success of the event which had an extra special touch. Mikel Moreno’s memory was observed in the raising of over $5,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation to benefit Levi, a terminally ill young boy, whose wish was to go to Disneyland with his family. Rank

When the scores were totaled it appeared as if Mikel may have even had a hand in the event results. Julio Moreno’s Reindeer Dippin’ son Junior came out on top with a 90.25 point mark. The event judges were Allan Jordan, Harry Rose, Bill Pacheco and Steve Yoast. ABBI’s registry manager Toby Pollock and Vice President Kaycee Simpson along with secretary Gina Graham from Texas, soundman Richard Jones from New Mexico and local announcer Ed Kutz all provided the working components required to produce a super successful, first class event.

The Clovis Fall Spectacular on September 5, 2010 was just what the doctor ordered for those west coasters that have been hankering for some ABBI competition. The event drew 26 entries from enthusiastic breeders and paid out nearly $10,000 in prize money. Cindy Rosser, Flying C Livestock, and Francis Dandy, Sis and Stan Bucking Bulls really hustled to make the event happen and did it in style. The event judges were Allan Jordan, Harry Rose, Bill Pacheco and Steve Yoast. ABBI’s registry manager Toby Pollock and Vice President Kaycee Simpson along with secretary Gina Graham from Texas, soundman Richard Jones from New Mexico and local announcer Ed Kutz all provided the working comRank 1 2 3 4 5 6

ponents required to produce a super successful, first class event. David and Allison Sandoval’s Stripper Dust blew into the first place finish with an 84.50. “It was pretty exciting. What Cindy did here in Clovis was really great. It was by far the best event I’ve seen here in California. It was great to get together and meet other west coast breeders. Hopefully this is the first of many more ABBI events here in California,” said David. The win propelled Sandoval’s bull onto the Las Vegas Qualifier in Stephenville where he ultimately grabbed a qualifying position for the World Finals in Las Vegas.

Shane Proctor attempts to ride Moreno/Oliveira’s Bushwacker during the first round of the Springfield Built Ford Tough series PBR.

The ABBI’s second Super Classic was held in Springfield, Mo. in conjunction with the PBR’s BFTS event. The event featured the ABBI’s Classic bulls bucking twice, once on Friday and again on Saturday. It was the most money ever paid out at a regular season Classic event, tying the payout for the Tulsa Super Classic. Bushwacker scored an 89 during round one. True to form, he came back stronger being bucked the next night and posted a 94. The great bull added yet another title to his growing list of accomplishments, making Julio Moreno, Richard Oliviera and flankman Kent Cox extremely proud. Moon was the reserve champion with an 88.75 and 89.25, finishing five points behind the winner. Moon’s performance earned Jackson/Homes/ Baker $11,472. Minor Incident posted the highest score of round one with a 90. He earned an 87 the second time out, enough to take third for owners Boyd-Floyd/Cunningham and earn over $8,000. Rank

A few weeks prior to the Finals, the ABBI Wild Card Classic was held in Stephenville, Texas. This event gave animals which had yet to qualify a last-chance to earn a coveted spot at the Finals. Over 100 bulls entered and the winner was D&H Cattle Co. and Margy Haines’ brindle bucker Flyin Train. His score of 91 was worth $50,000 and a trip to Las Vegas. The other bulls advancing out of the October 1 event to Vegas were Ohl and Beshear’s Pure Smoke with an 89.25, Teague Bucking Bull’s Bad Medicine with an 89.00 and MB 789 (aka Bad Blake) from Lightning C Cattle with an 89.00. ABBI Las Vegas Futurity Qualifier ABBI Futurity, Stephenville, Texas

By Sugar Kuhn Photos by Allen Glanville

October 2, 2010

Vegas Futurity Qualifier Winner, Ragin J.T.

American Bucking Bull, Inc. pressed into the World Finals through the Las Vegas Futurity Qualifier event held in Stephenville, Texas at the 4C’s Arena on Saturday, October 2. The qualifier drew 145 entries that were judged by category. Jimmy Morris judged the Buck category, Chuck Lambert judged Kick, Mel Kimbro judged Spin, Monty Mask judged Difficulty and Dean Randolph judged Intensity. When the event wrapped it was Jerry Tuttle & The Jaynes Gang’s Ragin’ J.T. that impressed the point pickers. The bull pulled a 22.75 point marking to place first in the qualifier. The marking was a point and a

quarter more than second place finisher Hous Back from Ace of Spades & Lone Star Bucking Bulls. Ragin J.T. has been a real adrenaline rush for his owner. Tuttle who resides in the Nascar’s hotbed of Winston Salem, North Carolina drives hauler for Childress Racing. He became interested in owning a bucking bull last year in Las Vegas at the PBR World Finals and ultimately purchased Ragin J.T. who was bred by PBR bull rider Mike White. “When I saw this bull at the auction, I said man I’m going to bid on this calf right there—and I was the only one who bid on him. His

intensity is really what drew me to him. When he came out he just tried so hard.” Tuttle has always loved rodeo and especially the PBR. In fact he attends regular PBR events throughout the season. “I’m fascinated by it. I never actually thought about owning a bull until last year in Las Vegas. I bought six bulls but this one’s turned out to be the best one by far. I can’t tell you how much fun it’s been and he just gets better and better and better. I hope maybe he’ll get more recognition after this and that he does this again in Vegas.” When asked if there were any commonalities between racing and bucking bulls Tuttle was quick to talk about the aspect of competition and adrenaline. “I’ve been an athlete all my life and drove race cars. I’ve actually ridden a few bulls—I wasn’t any good at it, but the adrenaline rush when they open the chute is just awesome. Really that was more a rush to me than my first trip around Daytona to be honest.” So where has Ragin J.T. been hiding? Well, right in front of our eyes. “The third event he was in, when he started he looked like he was maybe going to win the event and then he fell down. I was so disappointed that I even talked to Billy (Jaynes) about maybe putting him on the sale block. Luckily he talked me out of it.” The qualifier was the bull’s tenth trip under a dummy and interestRank
