President’s Message

q

It’s hard to believe we have another Finals in our record books and a new season is just around the corner. I think our 2011 World Finals were our best yet, and I hope you agree. Everything we did in Las Vegas was geared toward making the experience as enjoyable as possible for you the breeders. It was wonderful to be back at the South Point Equestrian Center again. There really isn’t a better facility for what we do in Las Vegas and I’d like to extend a big thanks to Michael Gaughan and his staff for taking such good care of us while we were there. Everything they do is first-class, from the hotel rooms, to the arena staff to our award banquet. The ABBI Board and I would also like to thank all of the ABBI staff who came out to Las Vegas and worked so hard to make all of our events a success. This group started their days before 6am and often had to work until midnight to insure everything was ready for the next day. We just had six people responsible for every element of the events and I think they did an outstanding job. I also want to thank our announcers, arena crew, pick-up men and bullfighters for doing such a professional job and making our South Point events run so smoothly. I’d like to thank all of our sponsors for their support this year. An added thanks goes out to Big Tex for being such

a great partner. They have always been a strong supporter of the ABBI and this season they went above and beyond. Not only did they host our Cattlemen’s Country Club award banquet, they set up a slot tournament at the banquet and awarded a trailer to the winner! All breeders with a bull entered in any of the ABBI events was invited to attend. Anyone there had a shot to win, so if you missed out on the banquet you missed out on more than great food and honoring your fellow breeders- you missed a great shot at winning a new Big Tex Trailer. Lastly, thank you to each and every one of our members. Everything we did in 2011 was to improve the sport. We care what you think and want, so please continue to let us know what is on your mind. We will continually work to improve and make things better- our events, the DNA database, our customer service, our website, our magazine and our products. The 2012 season kicks off with the 3rd Annual BoydFloyd Cowtown Classic event on Dec. 30-31. I hope you can make it out to the Fort Worth Stockyards to celebrate another year with us- whether as a participant or fan. Your support is what makes it all possible and on behalf of myself and every single person that will produce an event in 2012thank you!

Manager’s Message Let me start by saying Happy Holidays. I hope you are getting to spend time with your loved ones and enjoying the season. I don’t want to rush the holidays, but I’m already really looking forward to 2012. There are so many exciting things in place that I think will really benefit our industry and bucking bull breeders- next year and in the long term. The first is Back Seat Buckers. Not only will this program draw new people into our industry, it also provides a different way for established breeders to play the game. We are making the playing field as level as possible with Back Seat Buckers (pre-screening and bucking the bulls and then making sure they all receive the same level of care at the same facility by the same people). We are eliminating as many of the variables as we can. When all animals are housed and fed the same, receive the best care and training, and compete at the same number of events, then the best Futurity bull will win. We have people from all walks of life getting involved. But what is cool is that anyone has an equal shot of winning that $250,000 champion purse with their bull. A school teacher’s Back Seat Buckers bull could beat Ocho Cinco’s bull. And while Ochocinco (and some other sports stars we’ll announce soon) might get the most outside press, anyone in the Back Seat Buckers program has a shot of having their bull become a star and a champion. Few people would want to face off against Ocho Cinco on the grid iron, but how cool is it that you can face-off against him on the arena floor? I think this concept of making it as fair as possible, combined with a shot at a piece of Half A Million, and all

with Kaycee Simpson

of the Back Seat Buckers social events at the Futurities, will make this an amazing inaugural season. We want Back Seat Buckers to be as accessible to as many people who want to play as possible. We have limited it to 100 bulls, but we have made it as affordable to play as possible. Get together a group of family members, friends and co-workers or contact our office about payments plans if you’d like to be involved. Another thing I’m proud to announce for next year is that we will have even more Maturity, Derby, Futurity and Classic events. We understand that you want as many opportunities to compete as possible and we’ll provide that. We appreciate your loyalty and we will always do everything we can to have as many quality, high-paying events as possible. A big congratulations goes out to Ackerman/Cox for their $250,000 Classic win with Back Bender. The battle was a fierce one and made Las Vegas adrenaline fueled. I think this was our best group of 2-year-olds ever and Pillow/Barrett won the $100,000 for their Futurity Champion Jungle Smoke. The Maturity was phenomenal and the Claimer added an extra element to the drama. I’d like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to Frances and Stan Dandy (Sis-N-Stan) for making it possible for our junior members to have an event in Las Vegas. We were disappointed Sis and Stan couldn’t be there with us, but our thoughts were with them. I’m excited and ready to start working on making the Finals even better in 2012. I’m looking forward to another year, as we head toward what I know will be an even brighter future.

q I have never been good with surprises. Some people might think I’m a control freak (who, me?!) but the reality is I just hate not knowing what is coming. Surprises that are actually surprises are fine. But “surprises” that I know are coming? Not so much. I’m like a Girl Scout (or maybe it’s a Boy Scout), I like to be prepared. As a kid, not knowing what was in those brightly wrapped boxes that were sitting under the tree for weeks made me sick- literally. After a few years of me throwing up all Christmas Eve long, my mom gave up and let me start wrapping all the gifts- including my own. Problem solved. Luckily for ABBI, even if I’m not good with surprises, I can keep a secret. So I’m not going to tell you what other big name celebs besides Chad Ochocinco we have in the Back Seat Buckers program until next issue. But trust me, you won’t want to miss it! Check out the Back Seat Buckers center section this issue and see why Ochocinco has decided to become an ABBI Gold Standard Stock Contractor...and then wait until next issue to see who else in involved. All I can say is the the draft at Cowboy Stadium in March is going to be history-making. I hope to see you there! As I write this on Thanksgiving, Eve, my thoughts are with all of the members of the ABBI family- breeders, staff members, sponsors and supporters. Thank you for making 2011 a truly special year. It was full of real surprises (which were wonderful) and the 2011 Las Vegas World Finals- which was one I won’t soon forget. Even after 13 years with the PBR, and then the ABBI, there are always moments at the Finals that take my breath away and make my heart soar. I am so happy for everyone whose bull performed like a champion. But the reality is that 10 years from now, I probably will only remember a handful of the bulls’ performances. What I won’t forget is talking to old friends, new breeders just entering the industry who will become friends, and spending time with some of the people who are closest to me in Las Vegas. I was thrilled to see how well Rebecca Shumaker’s bull Redman did in Las Vegas (see the profile on her from last issue). I was happy to see what a thrill Kent Cox and Gina Graham got from seeing Back Bender (who they own with the Ackermans) take the Classic title. It really couldn’t happen to nicer or better people. I hope your holidays are full of wonderful surprises and time with family and friends. I’m so excited about the Back Seat Buckers program. I have told all my friends and family about it and hope to see some familiar faces in the Back Seat Buckers events in 2012! I really enjoyed meeting the people who are already involved with the Back Seat Buckers at our VIP social at Hard Rock and think this coming year is going to be incredibly exciting for everyone involved. May your holiday season be blessed, may your family and friends be near and may all your surprises be good ones. I’m going to go have another helping of turkey and then start wrapping Christmas gifts- including my own.

Super Stakes Incentive Program Want to increase your bucking stock’s market value? Then you’ll want to be a part of the Super Stakes Program. This new program provides added incentive for Bucking Stock owners who buck their bulls in ABBI Events. The Super Stakes Program pays cash dividends for money earned by nominated bulls at ABBI-approved events. In fact, the Super Stakes Program is the most unique incentive program in the bucking stock industry today. Here are some of the program benefits • Bull calves that are registered in their birth year by December 31 will have the opportunity to enter into the program for only $25/ head • As a bull calf gets nominated the sire and dam also gets nominated provided that both sire and dam are verified. • Super Stakes money is divided and paid annually. Payouts are based on the total number money earned by the bulls at the end of the 2-Year-Old Year, 3-Year-Old Year and 4-Year-Old Year. • A list of nominated calves will be published January through October issues of The American Bucking Bull, Inc. This is an added service to provide potential buyers with the information needed to make informed decisions when buying ABBI registered bulls. • The calf will be listed as a Super Stake Participant in the registry.

For 2011 Calves it is even easier, enrollment can be done when registering your 2011 calves. There is an option to add it to the registration or if you would like you can send your Super Stakes Enrollment Form into the office.

How is the amount of prize money awarded each year determined? • The $25 /head is split up between sire, dam and calf. As a calf is nominated $15 goes into the calf payout, $5 goes into the dam payout and $5 goes into the sire payout. • 2-Year-Old Year - payout is 20% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year • 3-Year-Old Year - payout is 30% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year • 4-Year-Old Year – payout is 50% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year An ABBI bull has a competition career for three years. Based on that fact, the total money awarded in any year is determined by the amount of bull calf nominations in their birth year and then a percentage will be used for each year of competition. A minimal management fee may be taken out at time of payout.

Payout:

Information for Bull and Cow Owners This program highlights not only the calf but the dam and sire as well. This is a great way to increase the value of the sire or dam by enrolling their offspring into the program.

Payout will occur every year the bull is competing in an ABBI event at the end of the season. Payout will be based on money won.

Please visit abbinow.com for more information on the Super Stakes Program. (Continued on next page)

How to Enroll: 2010 Calves can be enrolled until Sept 30, 2011 through online enrollment or filling out a 2010 Super Stakes Enrollment Form and sending it into to the office.

2011 Cattlemen’s Country Club presented by Big Tex by Susan Bedford

The ABBI’s 2011 Las Vegas Awards Banquet was its biggest and best to date. The Cattlemen’s Country Club theme was sponsored by Big Tex who made sure the South Point ballroom looked spectacular. Not only did Big Tex present the event, they also arranged to give away a trailer at the event by setting up a slot tournament with special slot machines provided by South Point Casino. “Randy Domino and the Big Tex guys went above and beyond anything we could have imagined,” said ABBI Vice President Kaycee Simpson of the event. “The food was phenomenal, the slot tournament was fun for everyone and you couldn’t ask for better company.” Each breeder received a token when they entered to play at the slot tournament. Everyone played for a set amount of time and then the top earners had a final showdown. Ultimately Dillon Page came out on top and was thrilled to win the trailer. “I expected I’d get a good meal and an award when I showed up today,” he said, “I had no idea I’d be going home with a trailer!” The event was held on Thursday, October 27, a day when there were no ABBI events being held. Each breeder at stock contractor check-in received two free tickets to the banquet. All of the ABBI’s awards were presented with the exception of the Classic Champion and Breeder of the Year who were crowned later in the week at the Thomas & Mack Arena. Besides the Futurity, Year End, Horizon Breeder, Event of the Year, High Money 3-Year-Old, Classic Wild Card and Maturity awards, plaques were also presented to the four programs who did the most for the ABBI Junior Breeders this year. Sis-N-Stan, Boyd/Floyd Bull Co., JATT and Box K Cattle were all recognized for supporting the next generation of breeders. The PBR also presented it’s most prestigious award at the event, Stock Contractor of the Year, which was won for the second year in a row by Jeff Robinson. classic event recap

Back Bender wins $250,000 and 2011 ABBI World Champion Classic Title for owners Doug Ackerman & Kent Cox

by sugar kuhn photos by andy watson

The 2011 ABBI World Champion Classic title and $250,000 went to Doug Ackerman and Kent Cox’s brawny bovine Back Bender after a two-out showdown during the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas. Back Bender added $250,000 to over $43,000 in regular season earnings after marking 91 points in both Rounds 1 and 4 of the PBR Finals for a winning combined total of 182 points. The bucker with the speckled-up under carriage edged out Lightning C’s Bad Blake by a quarter of a point making it the second time he foiled Bad Blake’s rush-the first being for the year-end title race which Back Bender nabbed from Bad Blake at the final regular season event. The newly crowned 2011 ABBI Classic World Champ was coowned by Doug Ackerman, an accomplished harness race trainer from North Carolina who has experienced enormous success with his first American Bucking Bull buy-in. Ackerman’s industry investment was magnified in Vegas after his title win when he and Cox sold Back Bender to Wolf Creek Cattle Co. and 2-time PBR Contractor of the Year, Jeff Robinson. Back Bender’s competitive profile and those involved in his triumph are truly an inspiration to anyone interested in investing in the American Bucking Bull breed. Ackerman partnered with Kent Cox, who has dominated the ABBI Classic event over the past five years in several ways. Cox has handled, trained and/or owned three winners over this stretch. Back Bender’s win is an industry triple play for Cox. His first Classic homerun was hit with handling Moreno’s red bovine Troubadour in 2007 and he hit another big lick with Moreno & Oliveira’s ultra-phenomenal, bucker Bushwacker in last year’s success Classic pursuit. Aside from his success to the third power in ABBI Classic Champ competition, Cox belted a pivotal grand-slam this year with Bushwacker’s PBR Bucking Bull of the Year title. Back Bender, a Fender Bender son, has demonstrated special skills over his 3 and 4-year-old Classic competition years. The wellbred bucker was only ridden twice in his thirteen PBR attempts and both were during his 3-year-old season. 2011 was his second trip to ABBI Classic World Champion competition in Las Vegas

and surely not his last Vegas trek as he graduates to full-time PBR status for his new owners. “Back Bender’s story is motivating,” shared Cox. “He’s been a consistent competitor for us. He’s proof that investing in a bucking bull can be a good deal. If you do your homework and trust the people you’re involved with, work hard and have some patience, it can all pay off.” “While with us Back Bender has really proven that he likes his job and that he’s good at it. He’s proven that he’s an athlete. He has that big, strong jump out of the chute and then he fakes left before going right and bucking up underneath himself. When you add how hard he kicks, he’s hard to ride. We’ve had a great year and hope that Back Bender goes on to be everything he’s capable of.” Although Back Bender stole the big spotlight in the Classic World Champion race, the ABBI can boast another superior athlete and success story in Lightning C’s brawny bovine Bad Blake. Bad Blake shares multiple similarities with Back Bender. Not only did he land extended success as a 3 and 4-year-old in Classic competition, but he also obviously loves his job and is well capable of it like Back Bender. Additionally he too like Back Bender was purchased by Wolf Creek Cattle Co. after his Reserve Classic title win in Vegas. The bull won the first round of the Classic battle and ultimately finished second overall taking home $100,000 after posting a two-out total of 181.75. “Bad Blake has been a real great bull for us over the last three years,” said owner Jerry Copp. “We look forward to watching him in the PBR with his new owners.” “We know he’s a tremendous athlete and he should continue to do well for Dennis (Tebow) and Wolf Creek,” added Lightning C’s Britt Bockius. The third place finisher and definitely the captivator in Round 4 was Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s Black Widow. The black bucker marked 91.75, the highest mark of the entire Classic Finals competition during his second out. The out was an exclamation mark for what these top-tier Classic bulls are capable of. Another regular season standout finishing in fourth place was the wild, white and black pointed V-5 from Marty Foutch and

Henry Wilson who posted a two-out total of 177.75. Clymer Rodeo Livestock’s bovine Santiago made a big play during Vegas proving his prowess after putting up a total of 177.50 and finishing fifth in the competition. Nearly $576,000 was paid out in Las Vegas to ABBI Classic owners and contractors alone. Over the course of the Classic competition held in Las Vegas, it was crystal clear that the American Bucking Bull breed is being cultivated to extreme levels. These 3 and 4-year-old ABBI contenders have been campaigned through the ABBI system during their young careers and turned over to become next year’s stars of the PBR.

Pillow/Barrett’s Jungle Smoke “Smokes” the Competition Earning $100,000 and ABBI Futurity World Title

by sugar kuhn photos by andy watson

The 2011 ABBI World Finals Futurity event held at the South Point Hotel and Casino Arena concluded with Pillow/Barrett’s big, black bucker Jungle Smoke winning the crown and $100,000! The exceptional bovine sired by Jumping Jack Flash had a very successful regular season winning the Lake Charles, Louisiana ABBI Futurity event and continued to build steam throughout the season with multiple solid finishes. A thrilled Bobby Pillow commented on the bull’s stellar performance. “Since we’ve been hauling him, he hasn’t ever had a bad trip. He’s always consistent. He’s real honest and he does it every time. We’ve been lucky. You know you have to have a little luck to win in this deal and we had it today. ” All luck aside, Jungle Smoke marked a 21.50 to beat the field of 82 futurity contenders. His superior out earned his owners a splendid payday and a prestigious title. “We are super happy of course. It’s a really good win—actually the best. It’s what every-

jr futurity event recap

SIS-n-STAN’S WORLD FINALS JUNIOR FUTURITY The 2011 ABBI Sis-N-Stan’s World Finals stand alone Junior Futurity event was held at the South Point Hotel and Casino Arena prior to the ABBI Futurity Finals competition. The first-ever, stand alone junior event to be held in Las Vegas was open to any junior participant and didn’t require any previous qualification process. The event drew 15 entries and many junior breeder’s bulls proved they were just as strong as those in the open contest. When the event concluded Rex Samford’s super-salty, black bucker Bring It On was the winner. The big-air boasting bovine earned Samford $5,613 dollars and the event win after posting 21.50 points from his stellar out. “Bring It On has been a really good bull,” said Samford. “He’s sired by -8 Bring It that Chad Berger’s hauling. His calves have been really good and I’m glad he had a strong out here in Vegas to finish up his 2-year-old season.” When asked what the event meant for the junior breeder, Samford when pressed revealed, “I’ve been involved with the

junior futurities from the beginning and this was a good way to finish my eligibility. It’s the first time juniors have been invited to Las Vegas so that is pretty exciting. I can’t thank Sis-N-Stan enough for making this event possible for the junior breeders. It means a lot to all of us to have this opportunity and we just really appreciate them. Without their support we wouldn’t have had this opportunity.” Aaron Halpain/JATT Bucking Bulls’ No Bama nabbed the second place finish and a check for $3,368 with a 20-point mark, while Matt Jack’s Jack -82 placed third, earning a check for $2,245. With ABBI’s cultivation of its junior program and the support from mentors like Sis-N-Stan Dandy as well as others that have stepped up to sponsor the program, it’s obvious that the program is as important as it is educational. These junior members represent the future of the industry and are a fine example of the program’s success.

MATURITY event recap by sugar kuhn photos by andy watson D&H Cattle’s Play Harder wins ABBI Las Vegas Maturity Claimer, $35,000 & New Home with 5G Farms The first ever ABBI Maturity Claimer event held at the South Point Hotel and Casino Arena came to a very successful conclusion with D&H Cattle Company’s Play Harder winning the $35,000 and Russ Gant of 5G Farms becoming the bovines new owner after cutting the cards with other claimers. Contractors and breeders had the opportunity to claim any of the Maturity entries for $15,000 prior to competition, a process similar to claiming races in the racehorse industry. Multiple parties claimed D&H Cattle Company’s Play Harder. After the bull’s exceptional out, the claiming parties cut cards for new ownership—high card winning. Russ Gant of 5G Farms won the card cut and himself a spectacular bucker for his $15,000 claim. “It’s really great to be able to purchase a good, young bull for $15,000 like this,” said Gant. “It’s a great value. I really appreciate the ABBI putting this event together and providing breeders with such a great opportunity. I think the first ever Maturity Claimer went over really well and I’m sure we will see more opportunities like this in the future.”

Play Harder marked 88 points and D&H Cattle Company walked away with the $35,000 event win and the $15,000 claiming fee. “This Maturity Claimer is a great concept,” said H.D. wild card event recap

Boyd-Floyd Bull Racks Up ABBI Classic by sugar kuhn Wild Card Win and $25,000 photos by andy watson The 2011 ABBI Classic Wild Card event held at the South Point Hotel and Casino Arena showcased some stealthy competitors as usual. Each year the event is anticipated as many unknown secret weapons are revealed by industry owners. The 2011 event did not disappoint and the new bull on the scene stealing the show was Boyd-Floyd Bull Company’s heavyhitting bovine Rack Em Up. The bucky bovine sealed the contest title and $25,000 after an impressive out. An excited Toby Floyd commented, “We are really happy to win and just as thrilled with Rack Em Up’s performance. He did everything we know he’s capable of and we just want to thank everyone that worked so hard at putting on such a great event. It was first-class and this year’s finals events were exceptional.” The well-bred bucker rolled over the field of 73 Wild Card contenders for the win by posting 89 points for his effort. “He’s a

Raspberry Wine son out of 248 Gift From God—a good cow that we have had previous luck with,” continued Floyd. “His dam has three other top-performing sons,” added Brad Boyd. “Riff Raff, Jefe 548 and Mailman are all out of this cow and were super buckers, so we are pretty excited to see Rack Em Up move on and buck in the Classic event Wednesday.” The top four Wild Card finishers advanced and competed in the ABBI World Finals Classic Finals held during Rounds 1 and 4 on October 26 and 29 of the PBR Finals at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Other bulls making the cut were Trickster from Teague Bucking Bulls who posted an 88.75, Big Stink from Chad Berger and another Boyd-Floyd entry Floyd 612 both with 88.25. The Wild Card event in Las Vegas paid out over $50,000 to ABBI owners.

FROM GOOD TO GREAT Cox is widely regarded as an amazing bull man in the PBR. “He does a great job,” said Julio Moreno. And Moreno ought to know. Cox has handled and hauled three of his most prized bulls. “I’d say he’s the number one man,” Moreno said, “and if somebody wants to take him a bull and, in fact, Chad Berger has a bull with him, so he does something right. I was tickled with him when I started with Troubadour and Charlie Bullware. Troubador was a champion Classic runner-up for the world and Charlie won second in futurity division and he went on to do good and he’s still going, and with Bushwacker.”

K

ent Cox can’t remember the name of the first bull that changed his life. He can’t even begin to venture a guess, but like any good bull man and without hesitation, he said, “I can tell you his number is D Double Bar.” This particular bull also had big horns. It was the fall of 1995 and Cox was competing at an indoor PBR Touring Pro event in Wichita Falls, Texas, when he got hung up and the bull hit the right side of his face with a horn. By the time the bullfighters got him loose Cox’s right eye had swollen shut and he couldn’t even spit out his mouth piece. “I thought, well, (shoot), I broke my jaw again,” he recalled. Cox did more than break his jaw. Despite shattering his eye socket, cheek bone and nasal cavity, he wasn’t knocked unconscious from the wreck. “Evidently I had blood coming out of every hole in my head,” Cox said, “and I walked to the ambulance, got in and about the last thing I remember for two or three days was I was lay-

ing on a table in the emergency room and told the nurse, ‘I’m fixing to be sick.’” They were prepping him for what would be the first of five surgeries and found out later that most of the blood from his head had run down into his stomach causing to feel ill. “The last thing I saw was a big pool of blood on the floor,” said Cox, whose only concern when he finally woke up was having the catheter removed as soon as possible. He also had his friend Randy Thornton contact Dr. Tandy Freeman. Once he felt well enough to travel from Wichita Falls to Dallas, he went to Freeman, who recommended the best doctors he knew of to reconstruct his face. After four more surgeries and 13 plates were inserted, all of which are still there, he was scheduled for a sixth because the plastic surgeon had said, “(Cox) wasn’t quite symmetric. He told them, “I’m done.” Cox was referring to the surgeries, but could have just as easily been talking about his bull riding career. He did make and effort to return, but admits he was never the same after that. The bull rider in him isn’t willing to say the wreck “broke the egg,” but it definitely started to crack. As much as he wanted to get on bulls if he found himself in a bind, he’d hesitate and never could make a big move to get back into the middle. All he’d ever been was a bull rider and was only 30 years old the morning he woke up, looked in the mirror and asked himself, “Who am I?”

2011 PBR World Champion Bucking Bull Bushwacker

He’s big. He’s bad. He’s smart. He’s a superb athletic machine. He’s Bushwacker and he’s bonafide! He’s an ABBI World Champ and $250,000 winner and if that’s not enough, now he’s a PBR World Champ, too. When it comes to the American Bucking Bull, no bull epitomizes the breed better than Bushwacker. He’s gathered up practically every title a bucking bull can earn including an ABBI Breeder of the Year title for his original breeders Cotton Rosser, Cindy Rosser and Julio Moreno. He’s also accumulated nearly $410,000 in earnings for his co-owners Moreno and Richard Oliveira. This red, motley-faced bovine to date is the most decorated of all American Bucking Bulls. These accomplishments have landed him in national and mainstream media sources across the country and made him a household name when it comes to bull riding. He’s proof that careful genetic mating, coupled with the best handling and campaigning, plus a little bit of good fortune can result in an infamous and elite champion. He’s the total package and the final product is a bonafide bucker with out-of-this-world athleticism, an incred-

A Tale of Two Champions: Kent Cox and Bushwacker cont. JB Mauney attempts to ride Bushwacker during the championship round of the Anaheim Built Ford Tough series PBR.

If Bushwacker is Michael Jordan then Moreno said Cox is certainly comparable to Phil Jackson... Make no mistake Cox and the rest of the bucking bull industry are well aware of what bull is fast making him a household name. That’s right, Moreno and Richard Oliveira have had Bushwacker with Cox when he won the ABBI Classic title, in 2010, and again this year when he won the PBR World Champion Bull title, in Las Vegas, beating out Asteroid,

RMEF Gunpowder & Lead, Smack Down and I’m a Gangster. Moreno said they learned their lesson with Troubadour. He brought Troubadour back to his ranch in California and never did quite win a world title. According to Moreno, several folks, whose opinion he trusts, told him it was because be-

ing all the way out on the West Coast prevented him being bucked consistently throughout the 10-month long season. “I said, ‘If I ever get a chance with another bull I would make sure he goes back East,’” Moreno explained, “and that’s the main reason he kept Bushwacker to buck this year.” He also added that Cox “is above everyone else” when it comes to handling bulls. “I think we’ll see down the road,” Moreno said, “in the years to come, everyone will have one of their best bulls with him.”

If Bushwacker is Michael Jordan then Moreno said Cox is certainly comparable to Phil Jackson, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to a total of 11 world titles before retiring earlier this year. However, Moreno also said using Cox could be like hiring a winning horse trainer like Carl Nafzgar, who twice won the Kentucky Derby following his career as a professional bull rider. The key to Cox’s training program is he knows what to feed to them, said Moreno, who is planning to have Cox care for two more bulls – Rudolph and Roy – once they’re three years old. Both are half-brothers to Bushwacker. “My bulls are started and bucked before he gets them,” Moreno said. “In other words, I’ll try them with a bucking dummy … and say, ‘Oh, this bull (has) what it takes.’” “He knows his job and that’s why he is like a Phil Jackson.”

FROM KID TO COWBOY Cox was born in Floyd County up near Plainview in the Texas panhandle. His parents – Dwight and Cheryl – split when he was young. His mom married Randy Lawson and the three of them moved to Abilene. Dwight was a saddle bronc rider and Kent grew up going with his dad to rodeos. He rode calves and steers, but when it was time to move up to junior bulls his dad wouldn’t let him. Dwight had had a few friends die in bull riding accidents and didn’t want to have the same fate befall his son, so at 14 he started saddle bronc riding like his old man. Unfortunately, his dad died a year later. “After he passed then I got to knowing Monty (Samford),” Cox said, “and he had a practice pen over at the house.” In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Cox was spending more time with Samford, who would buy practice bulls from the sale barn. Cox would get on and if they bucked he’d keep them around for a year or so and then sell them for a profit. It was a great way for Cox to continue developing his skills as a bull rider, but it also proved to be his first experience with handling bulls. When Kent left for college – he attended Vernon Regional Junior College – he took a set of practice bulls with him – two of which ended up going to the National Finals Rodeo

in Las Vegas. Cox describes himself as an “all right” bull rider, but “not real good.” He was definitely good enough to make it onto the PBR’s premier tour (then called the Bud Light Cup Series)and said his best year would have been 1995 until it was cut short “when I had my face caved in.”

ible degree of intensity and a vast array of fans who have either fallen in love with his charming bull-charisma or his genetic possibilities. American Bucking Bull, Inc. celebrates Bushwacker’s success, accomplishments and his contribution to the sport of bull riding and to the American Bucking Bull breed.

FROM BULL RIDER TO BULL MAN Cox loves everything about the sport of bull riding. Of course, at the time, he saw it through the eyes of a bull rider and said it was hard to admit that his riding career was over. “I didn’t know what to do,” he said. “When that fire inside of you goes out and you don’t want to get on bulls anymore – and I see it all the time – but you don’t know what else to do, so you keep getting on.” In 1998, he went out west with Samford, who was trading Moreno some Houdini heifers for White Water heifers. Cox was already caring for all of Samford’s cattle and bucked his bulls until Samford’s kids were old enough to work the ranch. In 2005, when the futurity competitions got started Moreno wanted to send some bulls to Texas, so he contacted Samford, but he told Moreno he was better off having Cox handle his two year old bulls and work to develop their skills. “Everyone knows Monty for all the bulls he’s raised, but Monty is actually a union pipeline welder and he’s gone all the time,” Cox said. “They called me and sent me that first set of bulls and Charlie (Bullware) was one of them. Living out in California there just weren’t enough events for young bulls and it wasn’t cost-effective to haul them back and forth month, much less every week. Charlie won second at the futurity finals that year and it made sense to keep him in the same environment, especially given the success Cox was having, so, in 2007, Charlie Bullware and Troubadour went back to Texas to stay with Cox. “We just kind of rocked on from there,” Cox said. It’s not just the care Cox gives them at the ranch – nutrition and exercise program – but

the special attention paid on the road. Cox said young bulls tend to stress out when they’re on the road, so he keeps a watchful eye on them and likes to schedule shorter trips as opposed to long hauls. There’s a trust factor between Moreno and Cox and it only made sense that Bushwacker would become another of Cox’s projects.

FROM LATE BLOOMER TO BIG BUCKER Cox and his girlfriend Gina – though most think they’re married because they’ve been together for 10 years and even Cox says it’s easier to say their married – live less than six miles north of Dublin, Texas. They both work caring for the bulls. As recent as five years ago Cox said there were plenty

of times when their bulls ate – his monthly feed bill is right around $10,000 a month – better than they did. In fact, they often worked two or three jobs in addition to working cattle. Bushwacker came to Texas as a 2-year-old and although he “won a little bit of money in the futurity events” he never showed signs of developing into a World Champion Bull contender. Almost from the time Bushwacker arrived in Texas he had the up-and-down kick, but according to Cox it wasn’t until he was four or five that he finally turned back. “You could see he wanted to buck,” said Cox, who when asked if he knew he’d be this good answered, “No.” Much like Troubadour years before him, Cox thinks Bushwacker’s development had to do with putting a real rider on his back. He

recalled the same being true for Troubadour when he was 2, but in both cases he didn’t see this much potential in either bull. Cox compared Bushwacker then and now to going to your high school reunion. “How many times do you see someone in high school and they’re all gangly and ugly,” he asked? “Then five years later you’re like, ‘Holy smokes.’” Today he’s the top bull in the world. Bushwacker bounces off his front feet – they barely hit the ground – like he has springs in them and follows that up with a great big kick. It’s the bounce that Cox thinks makes Bushwacker as difficult as he’s been and today he’s as fast as he’s even been at any point in his career. What might intimidate some riders is this

fact that Cox added, “I think he’s capable of getting better.” Cox said he’d love for a rider to stay on him for 5 seconds or more – it’s only happened once, when Dustin Elliott last 6.57 seconds in Pueblo, Colo. – so everyone could see him once he’s warmed up. He said if that were to happen the great bulls bring it even more the next time out.

He’s big. He’s strong. He’s smart. He’s fast. He bucks by feel. He has huge jumps and kicks and springs off his front-end. He’s definitely no one-trick pony.” Cody Lambert: “Bushwacker is really gifted athletically. He’s the total package. He’s a big, strong, powerful bull. He’s very physical and he loves his job, which makes it even better.” JW Hart: “Bushwacker’s intensity is headand-shoulders above everything else. He bucks with such intensity there’s no doubt he’s a total athlete.” JB Mauney: “He bucks different than most bulls do. He’s snappy and changes it up. He definitely knows what he’s doing. When I’ve been on him, I’ll think once he turns back he might level off, but he’s got so much whip when he does turn back that if you’re behind him at all you’re done.”

Bushwacker was a frontrunner all season, while Asteroid made himself a contender after the two-month summer break from the BFTS. The two top contenders competed in the same event five times. Bushwacker posted the higher score in the first two meetings with 47 points at Pueblo, Colo., and 46.25 points at Thackerville, Okla., while Asteroid had the higher score in the last three meetings with 46.5 points at Tulsa, Okla.; San Antonio; and Springfield, Mo Bushwacker was the high-marked bull in nine of the 12 regular-season BFTS events that he went to and again at the World Finals, where he was marked a career-best 48.5 points in Round 3. He then clinched the title with a 47.5 point outing in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. On the year, including his two outs from Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center, he had seven of the Top 10 bull scores for the year, including four of the Top 6. His Finals performance, one of the memorable of any bull in the 18-year history of the PBR, also earned him the distinction of being

when he was only 3 years old, at the 2009 PBR World Finals, for 89.75 points. He’s had an unblemished record of 25-0 in the past two years, including a 14-0 mark this year, leaving some to speculate that he could go down as the all-time great. PBR livestock director Cody Lambert has said, on more than one occasion, that another season like this would secure Bushwacker’s place in history as the rankest bull. Not bad for being handled by a guy who jokingly calls himself “a gloried truck driver and feed man.”

BACK SEAT BUCKERS CONT.

Q & A with Back Seat Buckers Member Brad Boyd 1) As President of ABBI and a very successful stock contractor yourself, what about Back Seat Buckers appealed to you? What is appealing about the Back Seat Buckers is that every calf is housed fed and cared for the same. This means the true top animal out of this pen of 100 bulls will rise to the to to win $250,000 in Las Vegas next year.

2) Why would you buy a Back Seat Buckers bull when you already have such a successful breeding program of your own? I'm a business man and this is a really great opportunity to win a lot of money. I also wanted to get involved to support ABBI and to be a part of something that I think will be really special. I look forward to meeting the other owners and all the social events we'll be doing next year as Back Seat Buckers contractors. To be a part of the inaugural class of something like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. 3) What most excites you about Back Seat Buckers? These cattle have been hand selected on performance, these calves buck. You are buying a bull that will be ready to compete in just a few months. What further excites me about this program is that the cattle involved are all treated the same,

Gold Standard Stock Contractor Profile

Paul and Sheri Thomas

Sheri Thomas of Aurora, Colorado doesn’t know she is a Gold Standard Stock Contractor yet. “I bought a draft spot as a surprise for Christmas,” shared her husband Paul. The timing of this magazine may make Christmas come a little early for Sheri this year, but we hope she doesn’t mind. The Thomases own Mountain States Bucking Bulls and already have some Futurity bulls, one of which made it to the ABBI World Finals this year. Paul describes himself as semiretired (he’s a computer applications designer) and sees the bucking bull industry as something he and Sheri (a nurse) can continue to do in their golden years. When Back Seat Buckers was first announced, it was something Paul thought they should get involved with.“We’ve been fans of the PBR since it started in the early 90s and its a sport we enjoy and this (Back Seat Buckers) is a way we can support the bucking bull industry and can help the sport grow further.” Come Dallas, Paul’s strategy for the draft will be a mix of looking at the genetics and studying the videos of the bulls bucking. Paul believes that the bloodlines are important, but ultimately mean nothing if the bull doesn’t show real-world potential. “Genetics, especially on the dam side, should give you clues as to what you might expect to see in the future but the video can show you what actually is on the ground. So I don’t know if one is more important than the other when making a draft decision,” Paul shared. Paul also realizes that there is a learning curve for young

42

fed the same and have the same flank man. It's a level playing field and it will come down to which bull is the best- plain and simple.

4) What do you most look forward to about Back Seat Buckers? I look forward to watching everyone's calves mature and develop over the course of this program. It's not just about bucking 2-year-olds for one season, its about three years of money making opportunities.

5) Any plan or strategy for the draft? No plan or strategy...yet!

6) What would you say to other breeders thinking of getting involved? I think other breeders are missing out on a huge opportunity to make money if they don’t get involved This program is great for everyone.

7) What would you say to fans thinking of getting involved? It's a great time to get involved in the bucking bull industry. Passion drives our sport and bucking bull fans are so enthusiastic. This program is new and we need new people like that involved in the bull industry. If ever there was a time to get involved with this program, it's now. People thrive on adrenaline and there is no better rush of an adrenaline rush than watching your bull buck like hell. I'm looking forward to it!

bulls and he knows that the quality of the trainers really matter. A great trainer whom he respects taught Paul that “good bulls become great bulls because of great training.” Paul believes bulls are born with qualities like kick, buck, and intensity that can’t be improved, but that bulls can be taught to score points by spinning right out of the chute, having consistent outs, not spooking in a large arena and being able to relax around strange bulls. “Only the best trainers can push bulls to that elite level,” said Paul. “The risk/reward ratio is pretty good. You have just 100 bulls and if the bulls are all of fairly equal quality and the trainers are good, the odds of winning something are very reasonable,” said Paul. “Owning a bull is always a gamble, but we have always tried to minimize the risk by partnering with other bull owners. There are so many wonderful people in this industry, making new friends has been easy. “Nothing is certain in the bucking bull business, so having fun has to be part of the equation. Winning is just the icing on the cake.” Paul is very excited to be part of this inaugural season of the BSB. “Now, if only the BSB would throw in some Gold Buckle seats for those of us who were the earliest charter members, I could really give Sheri a Christmas gift to remember.” Editor’s Note: I will see what Santa can do, Paul! All Back Seat Buckers will get to sit in a VIP section at all Back Seat Buckers events and the ABBI is working with the PBR to also have special sections and tickets available to Gold Standard Stock Contractors at Built Ford Tough Series events.

BACK SEAT BUCKERS CONT. Gold Standard Stock Contractor Profile

Tommy and Marcia LeMaire Tommy and Marcia LeMaire retired last January. They moved to Deridder, Louisiana to a farm- so in other words, they aren’t really retired at all! “It’s been neglected for a few years so we have a lot to do to get the farm back in shape,” shared Tommy of the farm that has been in Marcia’s family for generations. “It’s a tree farm and we have hay. We literally have acres and acres of fence rows to repair and clean up, and some barns to build.” The LeMaires were rodeo fans for years. Then the PBR was formed. “Once PBR started we followed that instead. We’d been to the WNFR before, but now we go to the PBR Finals.” It was that passion for the PBR that lead them to the ABBI. While in Las Vegas this year for the PBR World Finals they decided to go watch the ABBI Futurity Finals at the South Point. “We were impressed with the caliber of the bulls and the event,” shared Tommy. They noticed the Back Seat Buckers

booth at the South Point arena and went up to learn more. “Hannah Gant explained it all to us and we decided we wanted to look into what the ABBI has to offer.” Ross Coleman, who was working as a BSB ambassador in Las Vegas, also talked to the LeMaires about the program. “Ross told us about how we’d get to go behind the chutes when our bull bucked and all the social activities that would be going on for BSB members. I think it sounds like it will be a really exciting year,” shared Tommy. “We wouldn’t mind winning a few dollars next year, but we are mostly looking forward to all the activities and seeing our bull buck We are looking forward to Dallas and we plan on going to all the events next year!”

The Buck Starts Here! By Jennifer White, BSB Event and Members Manager

Without a doubt, the 2012 inaugural Back Seat Buckers season is going to be exciting. We already have a vast array of members from all walks of life who will each bring something special to this elite group of inaugural Gold Standard Stock Contractors. It will be exciting to see what everyone’s ideas and opinions are, and to hear the diverse views on what they are looking for in a bull. A group of friends that buy a bull together may have very different technique in picking their bull over someone like an industry-seasoned cowboy who throws his hat in the ring. So who will win the money? Destiny only knows but with a one in 100 shot at the $250,000 grand prize, the season will be incredibly exciting for all Back Seat Buckers participants. Back Seat Buckers is the easy way to own a bull and become a stock contractor. The idea of starting your own bucking bull program can be overwhelming. A stock contractor with his own program knows the cost of creating the perfect animal athlete. You start out selecting the best genetics you can find or afford. Over the gestation period you hope and dream that it is a bull calf that turns out to be the next best bucker. With luck on your side, it may be a healthy bull that you then ABBI register and EID tag. For the next two years, that bull spends time growing, eating and living under a watchful eye to see if he is destined to buck, kick and spin right at the gate with a high level of intensity. That is not even beginning to cover the work to care for the bull, the worry that he stays healthy, the time to transport the bull to events and all the money those things take. The ABBI and PBR are very lucky we have dedicated stock contractors in our industry because this general overview is proof that there is a ton of work in creating the next bovine star. If that seems like a lot to take on to get involved in the industry, then we suggest looking at Back Seat Buckers. Replacing all that work and worry will be the instant enjoyment of being a Gold Standard member of the bull industry.

44

The American Bucking Bull q Nov/Dec 2011

Back Seat Buckers is the easier way to play. Back Seat Buckers members enjoy significant savings over stock contractors who have to start their own breeding programs or go out and obtain a bucking bull they then raise, train and compete with. This program is the ideal in turn-key bull ownership with no work, worry or danger. There is no need to find a place to keep the bull or concern yourself with learning how to care for him. These bulls are pulled from a variety of the top genetics and breeding programs in the industry and are ready at the gate as soon as a member selects him. No guess work with this program and everyone has the chance to view the yearling bulls potential one month prior to the draft. Your bull is insured automatically for $7,500 once selected. If a bull is injured or unable to compete, a bull of like quality will be provided to compete with. Best of all, our staff takes care of all the details such as nutrition, exercise, veterinary care, training, transportation and flanking at events. You even have a potential tax benefit since you are investing, and this is certainly more fun than any boring bank investment! After selecting your potential champion, you have the difficult task of naming your bull. A bull is not complete without a catchy name and the choice is all yours. You can even use the name as an opportunity for corporate sponsorship. At the four regular season events and the final event in Las Vegas, you’ll live large at special gatherings and the chance to go Behind-the-Chutes while your bull is being flanked. Best of all you have a chance to win a piece of Half A Million Dollars. At the conclusion of the 2012 season you still retain legacy rights for the 2013 season, making it easy to continue as a Gold Standard Stock Contractor. The time is now…grab your friends, co-workers and family and take advantage of this opportunity to invest in fun! With the ease of ownership, you cannot afford to miss your opportunity to be a part of Back Seat Buckers. There is nothing better than a chance to ‘Buy’em. Love’em. Buck’em. ‘

Getting the Most from Your Breeding Program

with Ron Gordon, QualiTech, Inc. Cost of Reproduction As the seasons change it’s time to start think about your breeding program for next year and what you might do to produce the next champion. The first thing you should think about is the money you invest in reproduction. Think about how much money you spend on straws of semen, how much money you spend on embryo transfers and what you have riding on the results.

basis you should know what is in your grass and hay. The best way to do this is to have your forage analyzed and build your supplementation program around your forage. Think of your forage in terms of Excellent, Good, Medium and Poor. This rating system is developed by looking at the Crude Protein, Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) and Relative Feed Value (RFV). (See table 2) Once you know the quality of your forage you can best match the type of supplementation program to meet your herd’s nutritional requirements. (See table 3)

Body Condition Scores With the amount of money being spent on reproduction, your first goal should be about nutrition. This is how you ensure you are giving your cows their best shot at conception. Your goal should be getting your cows in a Body Condition Score (BCS) of 5.5 to 6 at rebreeding time. BCS is based on a system of 1 to 9. A cow with a BCS of 1 is on the verge of death due to malnutrition and a cow with a BCS of 9 is eating you out of house and home. (See table 1 for complete BCS chart)

BCS 1 Emaciated Little muscle left 2 Very Thin No fat, bones visible 3 Thin Foreribs visible 4 Borderline Forerib not visible. 12th & 13th ribs visible 5 Moderate Neither fat nor thin 6 Good Smooth appearance 7 Very Good Smooth with fat over back and tail head 8 Fat Blocky, bone over back not visible 9 Very Fat Tail buried and in fat The best time to effectively change BCS in your cows is after you wean your calves, 60 to 90 days prior to calving. At this time, the cow’s nutritional requirements are less than any other time of the year. If you have cows that need to increase their BCS, the best way to do this is to group the cows that need to increase their BCS and feed them separately. This will allow you to change their BCS and maintain the BCS of the rest of the herd with less feed. One thing to keep in mind is the cows that need to improve their BCS are often some of your best cows as they tend to milk heavier and raise bigger calves.

Forage When feeding cows, the basis of the ration should be forage. The forage should consist of your grass and hay. In order to use forage as your

4% CP, 38% TDN, 1.75% BW Intake Under 130 RFV Matching Supplements: Protein and Energy Tubs, Cubes, Protein Mineral Mix and/or Free Choice Minerals and Salt. With Excellent and Good quality forage you can most likely get by with supplementing a good mineral and salt. With Medium and Poor quality forage you will need to supplement protein and energy along with mineral and salt. The reason why a mineral should always be supplemented is due to the fact that the minerals found in forage can be highly variable in their bioavailability to the animal. The cost of supplementing mineral is a small cost in the big scheme of your breeding program.

Trace Minerals Using an organic or protected source of the trace minerals Zinc, Copper and Manganese, like SQM™, can pay big dividends in your breeding program. Reproduction is a function of each of these traces minerals. Research has shown that with SQM™ you can have fewer services per conception, higher first service conception rates and improved BCS. Conclusion Looking at your breeding program could help you produce the next ABBI futurity champion. The goal of a BCS of 5.5 to 6 at breeding time has to be based around your forage program to be the most cost efficient. Have your forage tested so you know what you’re dealing with. After you know what your forage deficiencies are get on a supplementation program so you can meet your cow’s nutrition requirements. A well balanced mineral program, with SQM Protected Trace Minerals, may mean the difference between success and failure in your breeding program. Here’s hoping your next calf crop brings you the 23 point calf you’re looking for to be the next champion.

Cash Roberts

C

ash Roberts is 15 years old, and a freshman in high school from Ardmore, Oklahoma. Cash’s parents are H.D. and Misty Page. He has one little sister, Karley (6). Cash has been exposed to the bull riding world practically his whole life. Other hobbies that interest him are football, basketball, and (at the top of his list) hunting. Cash said that he doesn’t miss a hunting season. No matter what the animal is, he is out there trying to hunt it. He plays basketball and football for his high school, and he is a starter on both teams. He likes to play sports and be involved as an athlete, but at the same time he likes to give a lot of attention to the bulls as well. Cash used to ride bulls, but after an elbow injury he took a break and hasn’t been on in over a year. The Pages have been PBR Stock Contractor of the year multiple times and have taken home big checks from numerous ABBI events around the country. They have had ABBI champion bulls such as Crosswired, who won the ABBI Classic in Las Vegas in 2008. Also in 2008, Showtime was the ABBI Wild Card Champion. D&H Cattle have some of the industry’s rankest bloodlines on their ranch so Cash doesn’t have much of a choice when it comes to being involved with the bulls! When it comes to breeding, Cash’s favorite bull to breed to lately would be Showtime. He has a calf out of Commotion, so of course he is

52

The American Bucking Bull q Nov/Dec 2011

partial to him as well. There are over 800 bulls that need tending to, and Cash is more than willing to help. He said he is on horseback almost every day- getting bulls up and working them. He stays by H.D’s side when he isn’t in school doing various chores around the ranch. Because he is in school, Cash doesn’t get to go on trips during the year like he does in the summer time. He enjoys going to numerous events where he gets to be in on the action, such as feeding bulls, loading bulls, and hauling them down the road. His favorite part about it all is getting to see the new calves as they get older and putting them in a chute for the first time and watching them buck. Cash has competed every year in the ABBI Junior Futurities. He had two bulls this year that didn’t compete quite like some of his futurity calves in the past. The very fist junior event the ABBI put on was in Ardmore, Okla. (2007) and Cash took home the money! His calf, 55S, won him $10,000 that year and a heifer. He bred that heifer he won, and now has some of his very own calves. It looks like he has already started on what he wants to do. Cash said he “doesn’t see himself working behind a desk” he wants to own bulls. It is a good thing he has some of the best connections in the bucking bull industry! Hopefully Cash brings out a bucker next year for the Junior Futurities, until then…good luck Cash! Thank you for all your participation with the ABBI.

End of Season Recaps q

As the 2011 ABBI regular season drew to a close, the competition heated up. With the lure of the $250,000 Classic prize and the $100,000 Futurity prize on the horizon, breeders from across the country brought out their best young bulls in hopes of getting a coveted slot in Las Vegas. Ultimately, Back Bender edged out early season leader Bad Blake to earn the title ABBI Year End Classic Champion. Smooth Groove from D&H Cattle Co. finished the regular season ranked tenth- the highest 3-yearold in the standings, securing High-Money 3-Year-Old Champion. On the 2-year-old side, big season winner Bad Wine won over $143,000 during the regular season and 643 points to be the ABBI Year End Futurity Champion.

We briefly recapped the late season events in the last issue of the magazine, but we wanted to give all the great animals who competed and their owners their due as well as provide a more comprehensive recap of the events and the bloodlines of these winners for our readers. We hope you enjoy revisiting what many think was the most exciting race to the finish line that we've ever had. A big "thank you" also goes out to all the men and women who worked so tirelessly to produce and promote these events and to everyone who participated in an ABBI event in 2011.

Gonzales Classic ABBI Classic, Gonzales, Texas

by Susan Bedford

July 9, 2011 Any ABBI event in Texas always turns in some outstanding entries and Gonzales, Texas was no exception. Some Classic race front runners left their mark on the judges score cards, as did some lesser-known bulls we hadn’t seen as much from this season. Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s L744 Geronimo battled it out to get a 90.5 and the champion title- worth $3,215. Box K Cattle Co.s 78 Poker Face, continued his strong showing this season with an 89.5 to be the reserve champ and secure just under $2,000. Circle T 701 finished third with 89.25.

Weatherford Maturity ABBI Maturity, Weatherford, Texas

July 15-16, 2011

by Sugar Kuhn

A great class of bulls had an opportunity in Weatherford at a nearly $15,000 purse July 15-16.A bull that surely spent a good portion of his career competing in aged events is Walker Bucking Stock Breeders’ Double Clutch. The bovine revved his engine again and according to some bucked better than ever as a 5-year-old. The bull sped by 25 other entries for the Weatherford win, nabbed a check for over $4,000 and tallied up some additional dollars to add to his already impressive ABBI Career Earnings. The event’s second place finisher from Sullivan Cattle Co. named The Mexican is an example of how maturity contests have created an outlet for individuals whose parentage remains a mystery. The bull posted an 87.75 without a genetic paper trail proving he is obviously still worthy of competition and recognition for his bucking prowess. The trifecta in the beauty of the maturity game was handily demon-

strated by D&H and Flinn’s double-dipping Midnight Mood who pulled checks in both the Weatherford Classic and Maturity contests. His 87 point mark was good enough for a third place split with Cross E’s ABBIcontest veteran Ricochet and placed an exclamation mark behind the system’s attempt at providing additional money earning possibilities for our bovines. Super-bucky bovine Asteroid from Circle T Ranch and Rodeo was marked an 86.50 sealing a fifth place finish, while Louisiana Purchase from Box K followed suit in sixth with an 86.25 which still yielded a check for more than a grand. Grey Feathers from Ace of Spades and Beach City flew into seventh with an 86 which was slightly ahead of three 85.75 point marks from Danny Reagan’s Joe Doe, and John and Mary McDonald’s duo of Nitro Circus and Doc Holiday.

ABBI Springfield Super Classic ABBI Classic, Springfield, Missouri

by Keith Ryan Cartwright Photos by Andy Watson

September 16-18, 2011 After several successful Classic events, the ABBI held its first Super Classic competition at a Built Ford Tough Series event in Springfield, Mo., on Sept. 16 and 18. Afterward, PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert said, “It really tells the story of which is the better bull and not which one got lucky. They have to do it twice.” The first of two Classic rounds took place Friday night with Jeff Robinson’s recently purchased Rango taking an impressive early lead after scoring 91.25 points. He held a 1.75 point lead over Smooth Groove and full two-point advantage over eventual winner Back Bender, who scored 89.25 points. Lambert, who thought 30 of the 40 Classic bulls he brought back for a second round were better as a group the second time out, said he wasn’t surprised Back Bender won given he had already proven to be a consistent competitor in his previous outings at the BFTS. Twice this

year, Back Bender has appeared in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round and he has been ridden just once in nine outs. Back Bender then scored 90.75 points in his second out to win the ABBI Springfield Super Classic by a mere quarter-point over Smooth Groove. Lambert was surprised by Rango’s second out in which he went out too far from the chutes before turning back. However, he quickly pointed out, “On an off-day he still bucked Guilherme Marchi off.” According to Lambert, he was most impressed by Train Wreck’s second out of the Super Classic, but the judges had him 88.5 in that round for a fourth place finish in the competition. The Top 5 Classic bulls for the weekend were Back Bender (180 points), Smooth Goove (179.75 points), Delco (175.75 points), Train Wreck (175.5 points) and Porcupine Puncher (174.75 points).

Amy’s Pet

History was made in Springfield, Mo., on Saturday, Sept. 17, when the ABBI and PBR teamed up for the first ever Maturity competition at a Built Ford Tough Series event. According to ABBI event director Zach Gunter, the idea of developing Maturity events is to give stock contractors an opportunity for their bulls to continue competing once they’ve turned 5 years old and no long qualify for the Classic events. The Maturity took place in the second of five rounds in Springfield. Leading the way was Amy’s Pet with 89.5 points. Rounding out the top bulls were Flirting with Disaster (88.25 points), who finished second, followed by Crooked Mile and Habanero 664, who split third and fourth with 87.75 points. Jiminy Cricket and Moon finished in fifth and sixth with 87.25 points each. “He’s been good, really good,” said Jeff Robinson, who purchased Amy’s Pet the last week of June. It was the second time in a matter of months the reigning Stock Contractor of the Year tried to purchase the bull. He first tried after seeing him at an event Tampa, Fla., but it wasn’t until an ABBI approved sale Lake Charles, La., that he was able to obtain ownership.

Robinson said he thinks Amy’s Pet is a solid 22 point bull with the consistency to be used in the first short round at BFTS events, which makes the 5-year-old a perfect candidate for future Maturity competitions. The North Carolina native added that he thought the Maturity dovetailed nicely with the Super Classic event and added, “It’s kind of a learning process for me.” Gunter said that coming into the 2011 season contractors didn’t know the ABBI was looking into developing Maturity events, but going forward they will be scouting Maturity bulls the same way they’ve worked to develop Futurity and Classic bulls. One theory is that Maturity competitions should increase the value of bulls that haven’t already developed into Championship Round bulls once they’ve reached the age of 5.

Las Vegas Futurity Wild Card Qualifier Stephenville, Texas

by Sugar Kuhn Photos by Allen Glanville

October 1, 2011 On October 1, nearly 100 2-year-old futurity hopefuls showed up in Stephenville, Texas for one last shot at an ABBI World Finals futurity qualification through the ABBI’s exciting Futurity Wild Card contest. Bulls not already qualified during the regular season went head to head for the chance to earn one of 30 coveted Wild Card positions. Once earned those qualifying through the Wild Card contest advanced to join those pre-qualified for the World championship title. The ABBI Futurity Wild Card event was held at the 4C’s arena. Nearly 100 bulls were bucked in a short amount of time relieving the tension that comes with such an opportunity. The competition was certainly stiff and those advancing were definitely worthy. Pillow/Barrett’s Bushwacker look-alike Jungle Cat made his way to the top of the mountain of bovines with a 22.75 score and earned his owners a hefty check for $10,686. He’s popped up throughout the season but definitely turned on the heat for the win at this event. Philpott Bucking Bulls P22 put up a 21.75 to tie Dennis Owens and Jan Wyatt’s Square Head for second place and each earned not only a Vegas qualification but also checks for $ 4,932. Fourth place was nabbed by Frontier Rodeo/Ray Cattle Co.’s Fly Boy who marked a 21.50 and pulled $2,671 out of the pot. Mud Packer from Talbert/XS Ranch marked an impressive 21.25 to win fifth and a check for $2,260. Sixth place finisher City Lights from Wilburn Bucking Bulls/Lost Creek Ranch earned $2,055 for his 21.00 point effort, while seventh through eleventh place went to a set of bulls putting up 20.75 point marks. VBBI Last Chance Futurity Wild Card Besides the huge turnout in Stephenville, Texas for last minute hopefuls, the VBBI (Video Bucking Bull Inc.) parlayed yet one more opportunity for 2-year-old futurity bulls to qualify for the World Finals in Las Vegas. Intended to help those from the furthest corners have a truly even shot at qualifying without incurring large travel expenses and milestress on their young bovines, VBBI extended the chance to enter and buck futurity bulls via video submission. The top 3 bulls by marking in the event ultimately also qualified for the ABBI World Futurity Finals and were awarded the chance to take

a stab at the big purse in Las Vegas. Torres Bucking Bulls’ 942’s 85.00 point video trip earned him the VBBI event win, $4,704 and a trip to Vegas, while Brown Recluse from Porter Bucking Bulls tied for second and third with Locke L99 from Circle T Ranch & Rodeo, both marking 82.50 points.
