A WORD FROM THE CEO
by Dustin Hurlbut, CEO, American Chianina Association
Here we are beginning of August already! How is this even possible! It has been a busy busy year for everyone at the ACA. I sure wish we could push a slow motion button to slow the pace down some. It sure seems like everyone just got done with winter and calving and here we are in full swing of getting ready for weaning and the fall sale season is upon us. Most of you will be reading this after your state fairs and I hope you had a successful outing. I would like to say that fall brings the start of a busy time for us at the ACA, but I am not sure there is ever a time anymore that we are not going 100 miles per hour it seems.
Jennifer and Stephanie are now officially moved back to our building in Platte City and seem to be loving the new look of the office! This has been quite the undertaking and they have done an exceptional job of working through the ups and downs of moving offices and getting everything lined up as far as the phone and Internet go. If you are ever in the Platte City area and want to look at the updated building, let one of the girls in the office know you are stopping by and they would love to show you around.
Ah “The Sweet Life” was one for the books! Heather and crew did an awesome job of rolling out the red carpet for all the families who took the time to spend a week in Grand Island, Neb. None of this would be possible without the generous sponsorships of so many of you as breeders or business owners! It takes many many hours to pull a Junior National off, but it takes even more dollars year after year to pay for everything from facility costs to prizes - it all adds up in a hurry! And we are very grateful for all those who took time to volunteer or made a donation to the event. We say THANK YOU!!
As you are checking your cattle and getting ready to wean be sure to have in the back of your mind the opportunities that are available to you for merchandising your calf crop. We have the -C- The Difference Sale held in Oklahoma City in January or the Ohio Beef Expo Edition Sale in March. We also have the Midland Bull Test in Columbus, Mont., as an option for you. Look for details for shipping and receiving dates for this year’s sale in this issue. Give them a call if you are needing assistance with trucking because I know they have truckers going all over the United States hauling bulls back to them.
Don’t forget to take your DNA samples when you are processing your calves through the chute for fall shots. Then get a hold of Jennifer in the office and get all your testing needs taken care of early so you aren’t waiting on them at the last minute. Also, if you have any cows or older animals that need to be registered, be sure to take advantage of the Cow Catch up that we are running till August 31st
I will be making herd visits at many different places this fall so if you are in need of some new genetics for your herd let me know and I would be happy to assist you in any way I can.
~ Dustin

The Big Picture
by Andy Higgins, Southeast Director
As I sit down to write this article, there are many things I could talk about. We have been blessed with an amazing summer here in Tennessee, the cattle market is seeing record prices nationwide and farmers are optimistic about their yields this fall. However, I think what you will see showcased in this edition of the ACJ is a topic that needs all the attention right now.
If you were able to attend the NJHS this summer, you got to see it firsthand. If not, I challenge you to look at all the pages of results and photos from this summer’s NJHS in Grand Island. You see, I grew up attending junior nationals every year with my family. While there have been many changes along the way, those changes have propelled our NJHS into one of the premier junior national shows in the country. The excitement and camaraderie that surrounds this show is not only existent the week of the show but is talked about long after. Now as an adult, I sit back and look at the big picture of what this event means to our industry. We have the opportunity to showcase our cattle and breeding programs through our most important resource, our junior members. The point I really want to drive home is that our junior members are the future of our organization. I encourage the membership to support the junior programs, whether it’s through sponsorships, helping a junior member with their cattle or even just being present at the shows. If you have never attended a NJHS, I promise you it will be worth your time.
All in all, the ACA is blessed with a wonderful junior membership that loves the Chianina breed and a magnificent staff who keeps everything pointed in the right direction. I encourage everyone to attend the upcoming Chianina events this fall and winter and if you have questions or concerns, reach out to one of the board members or staff. Also, if you have ever considered running for the Board of Directors, I want to remind you of the upcoming election this fall where 4 positions are open. I will be completing my tenure as a director and it has truly been an honor to serve the ACA this past six years.
Until next time, Andy
Higgins

Sweet Beginnings
by Josie Wilkins, President
By now we have all had time to come down off our sugar high from The Sweet Life, but I cannot let too much time get away without giving a quick re-cap of the best week of summer and giving a few people the much needed recognition that they deserve! The week was action packed with cattle shows topping 700 head of cattle shown by more than 600 exhibitors, showmanship contests, heated quiz bowl matches, speaking events and even a competitive kickball tournament. Each day exhibitors enjoyed “The Sweet Life surprise” where we indulged in popsicles, ice cream, cupcakes, cotton candy and sno-cones, and the icing on the cake was getting to take a break from the barns to hang out with friends from across the country at the local water park in Grand Island. I cannot thank each exhibitor, parent, sponsor, volunteer and the staff of the American Chianina Association enough for helping us pull off the best week of summer! Each year our goal is to make this show the absolute best that it can be for all of the juniors. From the elite cattle shows to our contests to the sweet treats each day, I hope that fun was had by each of you!
Hello, my name is Josie Wilkins and I am a senior at Lamar High School in Lamar, Ark. This is my second year to serve on the American Junior Chianina Board and this year I am honored to be serving as your AJCA President. From a very young age, I have been passionate about this breed and association, and I am so grateful
that I get the opportunity to serve each of you.
One of the first qualities that I look for in any leader is their ability to be transparent. I truly believe that transparency gains trust and respect while allowing open communication. Serving as this year’s president, it is my goal to lead our association being fully transparent in every decision and situation that I may face. Starting this fall at our annual retreat in Kansas City, the junior board will begin goal planning for the 2023-2024 show season. One goal that I have is to lead the junior board in brainstorming different ways to create and provide unique opportunities throughout the year for the junior members of the American Junior Chianina Association.
Without the support of our breeders and industry leaders, this association would not exist. As a board, it is critical that we focus on building stronger relationships with these individuals. My goal is that these relationships will provide more leadership, guidance and partnerships with our organization. It is my hope that the partnerships developed with these leaders, along with a steady increase in our junior membership, leads to a growth in our organization’s financial stability. Growth in financial stability leads to growth in our organization’s opportunities such as scholarships and leadership activities. The possibilities abound. My goal as president of the AJCA is to bring the cream to the top of those possibilities and, not just for one week, but to forever, Live The Sweet Life!

LADIES AUXILIARY
Livin’ The Sweet Life!
by Kelsey Evans, President
Coming off a sugar high from what was, in my opinion, one of the most enjoyable junior nationals to date, I can’t help but feel grateful. Grateful to yet again spend a week with some of the most talented people, all while seeing what the next generation is bringing to our industry.
How incredibly lucky are we? We live in a world full of opportunity, and maybe one of the biggest, and most exciting opportunities we have, are those younger kids who have chosen our breed, and our association, to become involved in.
The Auxiliary continues to attract highly qualified and impactful young ladies to serve our organization as our National Queen and Princess. I’m excited to share that our newly crowned royalty is Macey Banter, Indiana, 2023-2024 ACA National Queen, and Hadley Dunklau, Nebraska, 2023-2024 ACA National Princess. These young ladies are no stranger to our association, and I’m confident they have a great year of service ahead of them!
I also want to thank our scholarship applicants and recipients for taking the time to apply for our annual scholarships. We know it can take time, but the feeling we get knowing we’re helping support them as they move into college is humbling.
I wish each of you a great end to your summer, a successful “back to school” transition and a wonderful fall season. Look forward to seeing everyone in November!

A History of Chianina Cattle in the U.S. Part 4 - Ladies Auxiliary & Junior Association
Early on, most of the women whose families took Chianina to Louisville weren’t actively involved in the care and fitting of cattle at the National Show. Wanting to be more involved, an enthusiastic group of women held their first organizational meeting in November of 1980. The first Chianina Ladies Auxiliary committee consisted of Kay Burk (Chair), Caren Jacobson, Frances Greenwell, Jane Freytag and Cindy Monroe. “It was exciting to watch and get to know people from all over the country,” recalls Deb Guens, who with her husband Ken, raise Chianina.
The newly formed Auxiliary had several goals. “They wanted to help promote the breed, provide scholarships to young people and have a National Queen to represent them at the shows. To earn money for their programs they sold T-shirts, jewelry, handmade items, all featuring the flying bull with the American flag and the name Chianina on it,” Deb says.
Sue Comer was president of the Auxiliary in 1983 and 1984. She and her husband Terry have been involved with Chianina for 43 years and reside in Lynn, Indiana. “I remember when I started helping with the Auxiliary, we hauled all the merchandise down to Louisville for our booth,” Sue says. For several years, it required a trailer to haul all the merchandise from show to show. Dana Schrick from Texas and Sue Comer (and their spouses) did a great share of the hauling.
“Ladies of the Auxiliary helped run the booth for the week,” says Sue. “I remember all of us standing on the cement in the barn all day to help raise money. We sold all kinds of merchandise to raise money for the Auxiliary – everything from glasses, shirts, jackets, pins and hats. Sometimes we’d leave there with $8,000 to $10,000 from the merchandise we sold. Now it is impossible to have a booth but we do sell T-shirts and we did a cookbook. We also auction off items at times to raise money to support our National Queen and Princess. Each year we hold a queen contest during the National Junior Heifer Show.” The auxiliary has been a great influence in supporting and encouraging youth.
“When I first started doing the Auxiliary merchandise I needed some place to ship it to, so I contacted the NAILE office and asked if I could send it to them. Jan in the office said that I could send it there, so Jan and I quickly became friends. To this day we have lunch whenever I am in town,” says Sue.
The most successful moneymaker was the auction of heifer bronzes created by artist Galen Struve. Auctioneer Stanley Stout sold 15 bronze statues on July 9, 1983, at the banquet during the ACA National Junior Heifer Show in Platte City, Mo., in conjunction with the dedication of the new ACA building. The 15 bronze heifer statues, signed and numbered, were designed to complete matched sets with the 15 bronze bull statues which were sold at auction during the 1981 National Western show in Denver.

The flying bull was the first logo of the American Chianina Association. The Ladies Auxiliary sold pins with diamonds as the stars to raise money for the scholarship and queen programs.
Funds from sale of the heifer statues created a base which earned enough interest in those early years to annually award three or four $1,000 scholarships. The ACA Ladies Auxiliary continues to award at least two $1,000 scholarships each year along with some smaller scholarships, depending on the number of applicants. “We’ve given more than 80 scholarships over the years,” says Deb. The purpose of the scholarships is to assist junior members with their educational goals, whether in the field of agriculture, veterinary medicine or something else.
In 1982, the first American Chianina Queen Committee was formed with Peggy Buck and Sue Comer heading it. The national Queen was selected from Chianina Queens representing the various regions. “We always had 8-10 contestants back then and the competition was fierce. It was a real honor to be asked to interview and select the future National Queen,” Deb says.
“There were a few Auxiliary members who blazed the trail for the rest of us. Kay Burk served on the ACA Board of Directors from 1986 to 1988. There were others we admired because they also worked on the cattle and were able to show them. A few of the ladies were awarded the high honor of Herdsman of the Year. They include Caren Jacobsen (1989), Barb Ohlrichs (1991), and Jill Boddicker Miller (2005).” Jill also served several stints on the ACA Board as a Director and a term as Chairman of the Board. Julie McHale Hanson served as the ACA Board Secretary for many years.
The big event for the Ladies Auxiliary each fall was the luncheon meeting and the day trips. “We went to Churchill Downs, Silvertowne, did some shopping excursions and more. Some of us had children in tow, and they became honorary Auxiliary members. This created some of the relationships that continue today,” Deb says.
“As time went on, it was difficult to get our members out of the barn to get together because more and more of the women had become an integral part of their families’ show team. Luncheons got smaller, but the friendships remained. We sold anything you could imagine. Our booth went from three or four tables of items that had to be hauled all over the country, to one or two tables of silent auction items,” Deb says.
“At that time our meetings and luncheon were held at the Executive Inn across the road from the fairgrounds. Eventually we changed our format and started holding a “Come As You Are” luncheon and meeting in the West Hall of the NAILE so the ladies in the barn could just come in their jeans to the meeting. We usually had 25 to 30 women at the luncheon.” This changed as time went on.
Due to schedule changes at the show and the cost of things, the luncheon isn’t held anymore, but the Auxiliary has implemented some events at other shows to allow the group to get together.
Deb joined the Ladies Auxiliary in 1986 and held a board position until about 3 years ago. “I was Secretary-Treasurer at the time. We have some younger women now who are stepping up with some fresh ideas. They sold T-shirts with the brands of a lot of Chi breeders’ farms on them. They’ve also started getting together again at the National Junior Heifer Show. COVID set everyone back a little from the business at hand, but we are now raising funds again, promoting the cattle and keeping up with our good friends.”
To illustrate some of the personal memories, Deb recalls that when her daughter Christina was little, the guys would go off to the barn very early to get all the cattle into the wash rack and be ready for the day and she and the toddler would do their own thing. “I would load Christina in the stroller along with anything else we might need for the day. We walked over to the barn from the old Executive Inn. One day Christina escaped

from her stroller and we found her across the aisle, hugging the hind leg of Chiarrow Illustrator. The big white bull stood stock still, waiting to be rescued. That gentle giant reminded me of the old Arabian geldings my family had when I was young. I was hooked on this great cattle breed from that point on.”
Currently Sue Comer is trustee for the scholarships the Auxiliary gives to graduating seniors of the Junior association. “Each year juniors can apply for a scholarship and these range from $500 to $1,000. To date we have given 95 scholarships – a total of $82,000. This past year we had 4 junior members who applied for scholarships,” Sue says.
“The Association used to have a banquet and had a live band come in. They’d give away awards and honor various members. A fun time was had by all who attended. We have a lot of good memories, and made a lot of friends from all over. My kids were with us at the show in Louisville from the time they were born and now have lifelong friends all over the country that they met originally at these shows. Now their kids are showing against the kids of people they showed against. Traditions carry on,” she says.
the breed. “My family in Iowa where I was raised had Chianina cattle that we showed. My parents got started with Chianina in the early 1980’s and my brother and I showed at the 1982 Junior National held in Waterloo, Iowa. I remember showing cattle with some of the early breeders and a lot of the local Iowa people, and even with 5J Chianina who is still active in the breed today. All of us kids grew up showing Chianina cattle together,” Jill says.
2023 ACLA Scholarship Recipients
“Terry and I made many friends over the years. Some of our best friends don’t even live close to us; we’ve met them through cattle. In 2022 we attended the NAILE to watch our granddaughter, Claire show cattle. There is a special network of friends when cattle people get together, with common interest. We have come full circle,” says Sue.
Many families have been deeply involved with Chianina cattle, with the women being a part of the Ladies Auxiliary and their children involved in the Junior Association. Ken Culp III, Ph.D. (Department of 4-H Youth Development, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Family Sciences, University of Kentucky) says his wife Nancy was on the board of directors of the Ladies Auxiliary at one time, and his daughter Kelsey is now president of the Ladies Auxiliary. “She is also the Queen coordinator. Our family has been very active in the ACA and all three of our girls received a $1,000 scholarship from the Ladies Auxiliary,” Ken says.
Jill Boddicker Miller has been involved with all aspects of
Jill adds that the Ladies Auxiliary has been an integral part of it all, with scholarships for junior members and all they do for the kids. “This is the main purpose of our Ladies Auxiliary. Sue Comer, from day one, has supported that program and still supports it. These women are very dedicated and probably don’t get enough recognition. Some of them have put a lot of time, effort and thought into the junior program, and have done a lot over the years with the scholarships and money they have given,” Jill says.
American Junior Chianina Association
In 1978, the ACA Board of Directors approved the establishment of a Junior Association (ACJA). Young cattlepersons under the age of 22 were eligible to become AJCA members. To encourage their participation in ACA activities, an annual Na tional AJCA Heifer Show program was begun. The first AJCA National Heifer Shows were held in conjunction with the ACA National Open Show at the North American Livestock Expo sition. In the summer of 1980
To date, the ACLA has awarded over $80,000 in scholarships.

For many years, the ACLA hosted a silent auction during the ACA National Show in Louisville, Ky. Money raised from this auction supported the National Queen. Today, they utilize other fundraising opportunities to continue the queen program.
2007-2008 AJCA Board of Directors
the AJCA National Heifer Show was held at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Mo.
Every year since then a stand-alone AJCA National Junior Show has been staged each summer at various venues across the U.S., with expanded opportunities for junior members to exhibit steers and bulls, as well as participate in many other character-building events. These AJCA Junior National events have grown from a 1-day heifer show to an entire week’s activities, becoming the largest yearly ACA show (the 2023 NJHS boasted more than 350 head of cattle exhibited by more than 300 exhibitors).
Bob Vantrease, who was the third CEO for the ACA, says the Chianina Association has always had a good junior program. “The Junior Association is still probably the major part of it today. It is as good, or better, than the adult program, since so many kids are involved in showing Chianina cattle,” Bob says.
Ken Culp III says the junior program is part of what attracted his family to this breed. “We chose the Chianina Association because we liked the cattle, but also because they had such a good junior program. I am a 4-H Youth Development Specialist by occupation, so working with kids and valuing youth development programs is very important to me,” he says.
It’s great when a breed association has a strong youth program. “The junior members are both the future as well as the life-blood of any breed association. We want to do our part to support the junior program,” says Ken.
Jill Miller adds, “Wayne and I don’t have children of our own but we are firm believers in the junior program. I was brought up in it. The young people are the future of
our breed, especially in today’s world. At the shows in Louisville there used to be big breeders like Black Champ, Horsley, Beller, etc. with large strings of cattle, plus all the junior cattle. But the days of large breeder strings are gone. So the success of our junior program is very important to our breed,” she says.
“I am a firm believer in the junior program; our youth need guidance and help and we all need to provide that to them because they are paying attention — especially the younger ones. This is the age to get them interested and developing a good work ethic and focused on something like this. We need the junior members, so we must help them along as much as we can,” Jill says.
Editor’s Note: This is Part 4 of a multi-part series. Watch for Parts 5 & 6 in the next issue of the ACJ.
The stockman’s contest was one of the many contests offered to junior national exhibitors. Today, juniors can participate in public speaking, salesmanship, team fitting, quiz bowl, photography, videography, showmanship and livestock judging.

New Exhibitor T-Shirt Winner
This year, each first time exhibitor who attended the first year orientation meeting received a t-shirt, with instructions to collect as many signatures as they could by the awards banquet. This year, Kole Maxwell of Kansas took home top honors, collecting over 400 signatures! Way to go Kole!
Pop Tab Winner
Once again, the Georgia Junior Maine-Anjou & Chianina Association hosted a philanthropy project at the show. This year members were asked to collect pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. After all the tabs were weighed, Dax Noteboom from Iowa hauled in the largest load with over 32 lbs of pop tabs, taking home a cooler for his efforts! Way to go Dax!

Second Reading - Rules of Registration Change
As required by bylaws, the second reading of the proposed
change to the Rules of Registration took place at the July 2023 Board of Directors meeting.
Rule IV - Other Registration Requirements; Section H
It was moved by Pembrook and seconded by Rucker to strike current wording of Section H,
H. International year letter. All ACA cattle registered with the ACA must include as the last digit of every identification tattoo (see appendix for tattoo information) or brand, the year letter that corresponds to the year of birth of the animal. The letters I, O, Q and V (after 1987) are not used.
and replace with:
H. Animal Tattoo/Brand Identification
1. All cattle registered with the ACA must have a legible identification number tattooed in the ear and the identification number and ear designation must match the tattoo & ear designation printed on the registration certificate.
2. The International Year Letter may or may not be included in the tattoo at the discretion of the breeder.
At the July 19, 2023 board meeting, it was moved by Higgins and seconded by Tice to amend the rule change wording to include branding information that was inadvertently left off the previous wording. Motion passed to amend the wording as follows:
H. Animal Tattoo/Brand Identification
1. All cattle registered with the ACA must have a legible identification number tattooed in the ear or branded on the animal and the identification number and ear designation must match the tattoo & ear designation printed on the registration certificate.

It will default to mailing you a paper, but if you prefer to not receive a mailed paper, simply unclick the box.
If you have questions, please contact the office for assistance.
DNA & Genetic Testing Requirements
All sires intended for use with artificial insemination (A.I.) must be blood typed or DNA tested before semen is distributed.
A. DNA Testing on AI Sires and Donor Females
1. All AI sires and donor dams must be DNA parent verified before calves will be registered.
2. All ACA registered AI sires will be required to be tested for genetic abnormalities recognized as monitor status by the ACA based on breed make up before calves will be registered in herds outside that of the current owner, unless they are Expected Free by Pedigree. If the AI Sire is not a registered ACA sire but is registered with another association, the sire’s status for breed relevant genetic abnormalities must be known per their breed makeup. If AI sire is “commercial”, it must be tested for all genetic abnormalities the ACA monitors.
3. Embryo donor dams currently registered in the ACA herd book will only be required to be tested for genetic abnormalities of which they have been identified as being a suspect. Donor dams registered with another association must meet those association’s requirements. Unregistered (Commercial) donor dams must be tested for all genetic abnormalities regardless of breed makeup.
Pay Balance Due in Timely Manner
Members are reminded to pay balances due prior to logging off of DigitalBeef after processing registrations/transfers or updating memberships. Please note, registration papers will not mail if a balance is due and memberships are set back to inactive status if balance is not paid before logging out. You may still pay balances by check, but please contact to office to let us know if you will be paying that way.
National Western Stock Show Chianina/Chiangus Show Date Change
Based on feedback from exhibitors at the National Western Stock Show, the Chianina & Chiangus Shows at the NWSS in Denver have been moved to Sunday, rather than the traditional Monday show. This change will enable exhibitors to depart Denver a day earlier than in the past, and we hope this change is beneficial to our exhibitors. The 2024 show date will be Sunday, January 14 at 8 am. If you have questions on this change, please contact Heather at heather@chicattle.org.
B. All embryo donor cows must be blood typed or DNA tested.
When parentage is questioned, blood typing or DNA testing will be required and the questioning party shall bear all the cost. For blood typing or DNA testing materials you must contact the ACA office for instructions or referral to a laboratory approved by the ACA.
C. DNA on All Herd Sires
1. ALL AI ACA registered bulls born after January 1, 2017 must be DNA parent verified before their progeny can be registered.
For questions on DNA, please contact the office at 816-431-2808. Jennifer or Stephanie will be happy to assist you.

In Memory…
Karen Joy Holt passed away July 7, 2023 at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen. She was born October 2, 1942 in Britton, S.D. to Denzil Leroy “DL” and Doris Emaline (Raish) Cooper, joining half sister Shirley Beach and brother Denzil Dale “Denny” Cooper.
Karen attended Brampton Country School in Brampton, N.D. until its closing. She and her brother then transferred to Britton, S.D. to complete the remainder of their high schooling. Karen graduated from Britton High School in 1960. Following High School, she attended North Dakota School of Science in Whapaton, N.D. for Business, earning her degree in one year and began working for Frank Farrar at his law office. While working at the law office Karen received a phone call from a gentleman who was from the Aberdeen area that was going to be passing through and he wanted to meet for coffee at the local café.
Karen agreed but asked how she would know who he was. He replied, he would be the only one wearing a cowboy hat nervously drinking coffee. Surely enough, when she entered that café, she spotted the cowboy hat wearing gentleman quite easily, as he was the only one in the café! The coffee date turned out well enough that Derald decided he ought to stick around and invite Karen to have a steak and a whiskey with him that evening. Two dates in one day did the trick and the two were officially courting after that.
On September 18, 1971 Karen was married to Derald Dean Holt in Britton, S.D. at the Methodist Church. Derald and Karen then moved to Pierre to help the Holt family build and manage hotel/ apartment buildings, The Royal D and the Royal H near capitol lake. During that time Karen also worked at a law office in Pierre. A few short years later the couple, along with Derald’s parents Joie and Viola Holt relocated to a ranch just outside of Aberdeen to raise their family where Karen remained until recently.
Derald and Karen welcomed two son, Justin Cooper & Jordan Timothy Joseph. They loved to follow the boys in sports and their livestock show career from small 4-H shows around the state to attending large National Livestock Shows around the United States. Karen was always the fanciest lady in the barn, likely sporting a pair of heeled shoes and plenty of jewelry to match. Karen was notoriously, Hereford Lady Base on the families CB Radio that was in their home and could always count on a nightly call asking if she was home from work and what she had planned
Bulletin 84 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | SEPTEMBER 2023
for supper from Derald or the boys. Karen had wonderful memories of different shows they had attended and the people they met along the way which always held a special place in her heart. When the “Holt Brothers” were in the ring, you were sure to spot Karen proudly following behind them. She would often tell stories of their late-night adventures, which animal won where and how she could keep track, nobody knew! Karen also had a love for the Minnesota Twins & Vikings and enjoyed many quiz shows, Fox News and Sport Center!
In her later years, Karen worked at Johnson Investments for Orin Johnson and family for nearly 20 years.
Karen’s greatest joys beyond her two children were by far her grandchildren! She lived for the call to snuggle a little one or rock another to sleep. She could be found participating in evening baseball games in the front yard or pushing another one on the swing set. She was the best daycare shuttle, and she had many sleepovers at her house which entailed lots of snacks and ice cream! Karen was sure to be spotted at almost all the grandkids’ sporting events, school concerts and especially livestock shows, in the stands, keeping track of the results. Her love and pride in watching the next generation of the Holt family take to the ring was something many could see just by watching her ringside.
Karen leaves behind a family who will miss their “Hereford Lady Base” very much but will work to honor her in all that they do moving forward. We envision that there was a man in a cowboy hat waiting nervously for her arrival when she reached Heaven’s gates.
Karen is survived by her sons; Justin (Kali) Holt and Jordan (Amanda) Holt; grandchildren Haleigh, Maggie, Charlee, Cooper, Jayden and TeeJay Holt; Sister-in-Law Ruth Cooper, Sister-in-Law Darlys (Dennis) Holm, Brother-in-Law Darwin Holt, Sister-in-Law Shirley Holt, and many Nieces, Nephews and Extended Relation.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Derald (2005), her parents and siblings as well as extended relation.
Funeral services were held July 12, 2023 at Aldersgate Church. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery.

SEPTEMBER 2023 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | 93
The cross between a Chianina/Chiangus with any of the British breeds emphasizes hybrid vigor, exceptional growth rates and carcass quality. Utilizing a Chianina or Chiangus bull on your females can increase weaning & yearling weights, yield grades, feed efficiency and more.
Successful beef production starts and ends with the cow. Chi and Chicross mothers provide a complete package of maternal skills full of staying power. The maternal heterosis bred into these cattle compliments the natural mothering ability of Chianina.
