When you read this it will be after the first of the new year – so wishing you a Happy New Year!! I hope you had a great Christmas and survived the arctic blast that everyone had right before Christmas. One thing is for sure – we have to be optimistic in the livestock industry or any part of the agricultural industry for that matter!

The Association had a great year in 2022! We celebrated our 50th Anniversary in Louisville, we set a new record for registrations in one month with 965 in November (the next closest for one month of registrations was 839 in November of 2017.) While there are likely higher one month registration numbers in past years, this is from the most recent 6 years and we as breeders and the Association should be proud of this accomplishment! Our Junior memberships are at 2,216 for 2022 (compared to 1,408 junior memberships in 2018). Our junior program has really climbed these past couple years! I give all the credit to Heather for all her hard work on the Junior program and all the time she spends putting on Junior Nationals!

We are headed into a very exciting 2023! First up we have the National Sale in Oklahoma City on January 7. Be sure to look us up while in OKC for the show and sale. Swing by our booth in the Super Barn right beside the sale arena and grab a sire directory. From there we will be off to Denver for the National Western Stock Show! Come check out the new Yards! They have done an excellent job on that part of the facility. Look us up in the herd sire alley right outside the new Yards sale and show complex! If you can’t make it to either one of those be sure to look us up while in Ft. Worth at the Fort Worth Stock Show held the end of January!

As you can see, our schedules for January are full of travel, shows and sales! Once I am home from Ft. Worth I will be off to the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, S.D., then to Kearney, Neb. for the Nebraska Cattleman’s Classic! Another new sale for the Chianina Association will be on March 17 at the Ohio Beef Expo! There’s still time to consign, so if you’re interested in being a part of this sale, let us know soon. After that we have some members who have some bulls in the Midland Bull Test the first week of April in Columbus, Mont. There are plenty of opportunities to add a new bull, heifer or genetic opportunities to your program! Give me a call if you have any questions throughout the beginning of 2023 on any of the cattle or genetic lots selling!

We are slowly but surely getting our Platte City office back together. It will be exciting to see it completed this Spring. The girls in the office are still in their temporary home down on Ambassador Road and are doing an awesome job in the office. I hear many compliments about how helpful and knowledgeable they are when helping out new and existing members! Thank you Jennifer and Stephanie for all the hard work you ladies do for our Association! It is much appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed!

I look forward to seeing everyone starting in January in Oklahoma City! If you need anything at all be sure to reach out to myself or any of the staff.

Ibelieve agriculture is a rare kind of industry. One where a person of any background, any skill set, any education level, can find a place within it. Although it sometimes feels like the barriers to ranching get steeper with each passing year, the opportunities of the industry still feel optimistic to me. We are still producing the kind of youth who would rather play and work outside than sit inside and stare at a screen. We are still enjoying a way of life that inspires others to join, even when they are not experienced or knowledgeable, and find a place to excel.

I was not a person who grew up on a large cattle ranch or had a lot of family connections to help me get started in agriculture. I grew up the son of a second-generation veterinarian. My dad had a busy Nebraska Sandhills vet practice when I was a kid and I fell in love with the land, the people and more than anything, the cattle. But I never thought as a kid, I would become a Sandhills rancher. I just wanted to work for those operations and learn as much as I could about caring for cattle. So, that’s what I did for a lot of years. I had a lot of learning to do from the start and I accumulated a lot of knowledge about what not to do! And there is no end to learning about what you love.

As I went from ranch to ranch I earned an understanding of what it takes to make it in this industry. It does not take a fancy degree, generations of family ranching, big herds of cattle, townships of land or connections to guys at the top. What it does take is character — integrity, work ethic, dependability, selflessness, humility and passion. All the skills can be learned, but a person’s character is either made of that zeal or not. And when we show work ethic and integrity, success will follow, no matter what road map we take to get there. The doors are wide open here for anybody who wants to work hard and learn to make themselves successful. I can’t say that about any other industry and that gives me a lot of confidence and hope for the future of this breed and this industry.

My own journey here has been winding, and I’ve come a long way since I first found a place within agriculture. From ranch hand to ranch manager, to small land owner with a handful of cows, to now making a big move with my family to our new Sandhills ranch. I wouldn’t have guessed that along the way I would join an association board of directors. And it is a huge honor for me to be elected as the 2023 ACA Board President! Thank you to everyone for your support and confidence. I am proud of the accomplishments this board has achieved together during the years I have served. I anticipate lots of lively debate, great ideas, thoughtful participation and forward progress throughout the next year. It is my great honor to serve this dedicated membership and preside over this esteemed board of directors.

These individuals pour their heart and souls into every inch and detail that entails this breed. There is no doubt, there’s quality at the

How Will You Spend Your Dash?

I read of a man who stood to speak

At the funeral of a friend

He referred to the dates on the tombstone From the beginning...to the end

He noted that first came the date of birth And spoke the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time That they spent alive on earth. And now only those who loved them Know what that little line is worth

For it matters not, how much we own, The cars...the house...the cash. What matters is how we live and love And how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard. Are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough To consider what’s true and real And always try to understand The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger And show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect And more often wear a smile, Remembering this special dash Might only last a little while

A History of Chianina Cattle in the U.S. Part One - The Early Years

Chianina is one of the oldest breeds of cattle, originating in the Chianti Valley, from which it takes its name, and the middle Tiber valley in Italy. These large cattle have been raised in the Italian regions of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio for at least 2,200 years and were used primarily as oxen. They were the principal source of transportation and agricultural power in the area until displaced by mechanization following World War II.

By the 1930’s, however, Italian breeders began to select animals more suited to meat production, with shorter legs, longer bodies and more muscle. In 1933, a breed standard was established and commissions set up by the Italian ministry of agriculture and forestry to identify, mark and register the most suitable animals. The breed standard was fixed by ministerial decree in August 1935. These white cattle continued to be the largest in the world, but with more emphasis on beef production than as draft animals.

Meanwhile, the North American cattle industry was selecting smaller and smaller cattle, especially for the show ring, in the most popular breeds which included Hereford and Angus. Then during the 1960s cattlemen became interested in several European breeds, exploring new genetic sources to enhance beef production possibilities and make their cattle larger again. The first continental cattle to come to the U.S. were Charolais (from France, via Mexico) in the 1930’s, imported by the King Ranch in Texas. Many producers continued to use the smaller British breeds, however, and most purebred breeders were caught up in the fad for “belt buckle” height show cattle.

By the mid-1960’s, however, continental breeds were gaining interest as a solution to some of the problems created by too-small cattle. U.S. producers established associations for Simmental (ASA), Limousin (NALF), Maine-Anjou (AMAA), and Gelbvieh (AGA). “Toward the end of the 1960s, interest turned to the three Italian white breeds – Chianina, Marchigiana and Romagnola,” says Richard Koonce, who has been involved with Chianina cattle since 1973.

Koonce was acquainted with Dr. Jack Phillips, who became the first CEO of the American Chianina Association. “I came out of the Army in the spring of 1973. He hired me, along with several other people, for the American Herdsman’s Institute he’d started. Then he came across the Chianina and became CEO of that Association,” says Koonce.

“The Herdsman’s Institute contracted 60-plus females for the first National Chianina sale in September 1973. I worked on that, and when the sale was over, in early October of 1973, Dr. Phillips needed help with the American Chianina Journal. He just had one employee (the editor) for that publication – which started in April of 1973. I was hired to be field representative for the Journal and that became my daily exposure to the breed. There are very few of us still around who remember what went on 50 years ago.” When asked to help supply information for this article on the history of the ACA and the Chianina breed in this country, he provided much of the background needed — from his memory and from old articles in the American Chianina Journal.

“Because of the presence of Foot-and-Mouth disease, all European cattle were prohibited by USDA from being directly imported from their home countries into the U.S.,” says Koonce. The Canadian agriculture department, however, allowed imports of cattle from Europe under strict quarantine protocols: quarantine periods in Europe before shipment, another quarantine upon arrival into Canada, and additional on-farm periods of quarantine after reaching their actual destination.

Canadian importation permits were given to various cattlemen, with the initial selection process of Italian Fullblood Chianina taking place in 1970. “Two Canadian cattlemen – Jonathan Fox at Justamere Farms, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan and Marshall Copithorne at CL Ranches in Cochrane, Alberta – were hired by many Canadian import permit holders

to go to Italy and select cattle for them,” says Koonce.

In Italy the 1970 calf crop that would come to Canada were all designated with names beginning with F. Following quarantine procedures, these Italian Fullbloods arrived in Canada in 1971. “Many of the yearling bulls were leased by AI firms including ABS, Curtiss Breeding Services, Hybrid Vigor, Inc., New Breeds Industries, Inc., and Select Sires, for semen distribution throughout Canada and the U.S.”

Selecting Chianina Cattle for North American Breeders

One of the people who went to Italy to pick out seedstock was Glen Klippenstein. He has been a cattle breeder all his life and a member of the Chianina Association for 50 years. He was born on his grandfather’s homestead in Saskatchewan, then got a degree in Animal Science from Penn State University in 1959. He moved to Missouri in the 1960s and established GlenKirk Farms, a cattle breeding operation which has sold cattle, semen, and embryos across America and worldwide.

“I have been in the Hereford business all my life and at one time sold about 300 bulls a year. We had 19 Polled Hereford champions and reserve champions at the National, one horned Hereford champion at Denver, one Supreme Champion Angus at the Louisville futurity and some carload champions. We promoted our performance cattle through the show ring. I’ve always been interested in breeding and selecting cattle with traits that make a person more money and cause less problems,” Glen says.

“I learned that when I was at Penn State. I had a professor, Herman Purdy, who was well known. I worked for him at the Penn State beef barn as an undergraduate and he always gave me the cows with big teats and I’d have to milk them out so their calves could suckle. Those are the kinds of things that taught me more about cattle than what I learned in the classroom!” These are problems a commercial cattleman doesn’t have the time or energy to deal with.

“We also had really small (Frame 3) cattle that were popular at the time and I couldn’t bear those. I wanted to go into the cattle business, but couldn’t find any cattle that I liked. I began my journey to find cattle with more growth, more lean meat

and more milk. And in our part of the country, in Missouri, we needed something with slicker hair because of fescue problems and heat stress,” he says.

“Then I was introduced to Chianina cattle. I didn’t even know what they were, but I was good friends with Dr. Harlan Ritchie and he’d just been to Europe. He called me from the airport when he got back — knowing I was going to Europe in the next few days to help Wilf Davis, cattle manager at Bar 5 Simmentals, select about 75 Simmental heifer calves for Canadian permit holders. Many of the Canadian ranchers couldn’t go to Europe so they sent me and Wilf to select cattle for them. When Harlan told me about Chianina cattle, he said I had to go see them.”

When Glen arrived in Italy, some of the breeders must have known he was coming, because three carloads of Chianina breeders, including the president of the Italian Chianina Association, were waiting for him at the train station.

“I went from Bern, Switzerland, where I’d left the Simmentals, and took the train to Florence, Italy, in the Tuscan Valley, where most of the Chianina cattle were. When I saw the first ones I couldn’t believe my eyes and I was shaking with excitement. I was looking for more growth and more lean meat, and there it was! I had never seen anything even close to what these animals were,” Glen says.

“I’d seen a few big cattle in Canada while growing up, like Holstein-Shorthorn crosses, and people were raising some 800pound calves at that time, including big Herefords and Shorthorns. Then producers went all the way down to 300 and 400-pound calves, and those were called baby beef,” he says.

“My trip to Italy was where I discovered Chianina, and I made the president of the association promise me that if I got any permits I could get some of these cattle. We got 7 permits and I got first pick of all the Chianina calves in Italy from areas that didn’t have Foot-and-Mouth disease. Two of my selections did get rejected because of those rules. I had to come up with replacements (selected by other breeders), and they were not as good as the other 4 heifers and the bull I got. Even then, I received a lot of money for those two replacement animals and they paid for the whole deal,” Glen says. “Cows like Carolyn, Carie, Gina and Octavia resulted from these first selections. They were big, robust, beautiful, balanced strong cows.” Glen kept those first animals cattle in Canada for the required 3 years, then brought them to the U.S.

When I saw the first ones I couldn’t believe my eyes and I was shaking with excitement. I was looking for more growth and more lean meat, and there it was! I had never seen anything even close to what these animals were.

“The president of the Italian Association, Dr. Fortegeri, was a sharp guy who had about 400 Chi cows, raised the way we do in the U.S. Many other cattle in Europe and Italy were in smaller herds and treated more like pets. When I went to Italy to select some of the first Chianina to bring to North America, Dr. Fortegeri showed me several butcher shops that specialized in meat from Chianina. The meat was very popular with food shoppers — clean, neat and very little waste fat. The meat was lean, with beautiful color and very fine texture. Customers were very pleased with their fat-free purchases.”

Some Chianina cattle had a disposition problem, including a bull called Iroito, who became quite famous. “Those cattle caused a lot of problems for some breeders and gave the breed a bad image. But these cattle were so much bigger, growthier and more competitive than the cattle that were already here; they were amazing. The Chianina cattle provide more heterosis than any other cattle I’ve had experience with; it is very dramatic. This is partly what caused some disposition problems, especially with Angus because that breed tends to be flighty, too. If you don’t want your hat kicked off, I’d trust a Chianina before I would an Angus!” Glen says.

It was a plus, being able to get the pick of some of the first imports. “I didn’t go for the biggest ones. The small ones were plenty big! We picked cattle that had a lot of body and were well balanced. I was one of the first breeders to be registered with the ACA; my breeder number is 127. Today there are only one or two left who were below that, on the forefront of this breed in the U.S.” he says.

Chianina Semen for American Breeders –International Genes, under the direction of former University of Minnesota animal science professor, Dr. Harry Rajamannan, established a quarantine station in Italy where selected bulls of the three Italian white breeds had semen collected and cleared for exportation to North America.

“The first Italian Fullblood Chianina semen made available to American cattlemen in early 1971 was the bull Diaceto I (ACA #1). An additional 16 Italian Fullblood Chianina bulls had semen collected and directly imported into North America in 1972 and 1973,” Koonce says.

As semen became available in the U.S., Italian fullblood Chianina semen was put into nearly every breed of beef and dairy females, producing half-blood (50%) Chianina progeny. Many cattlemen using Chianina genetics were looking to breed up the Chianina percentage in their herds toward the Purebred level, using the same strategy followed by previous European imported breeds.

The first importation of Italian Fullblood Chianina bulls and females was into Canada. “The first 38 bulls registered in the ACA were Fullbloods, mostly the ‘F’ named bulls. The second significant importation, in 1974, included 33 ‘I’’ bulls (calved in 1972) followed by importation in 1975 of 14 ‘L’ bulls. Many Italian Fullblood females were also part of these importations,” says Koonce.

“In 1975 a few more Italian fullblood bulls and heifers were imported by U.S. cattlemen, including Walter G. Mize Ranches, Cleburne, Texas; Twin Wheels Chianina, in Kentucky; and Walbridge Farm, New York; via Japan. These were ‘L’ named cattle calved in 1973. None of the cattle imported into Canada could be permanently released into the U.S. until four years had passed. This began in 1975,” says Koonce.

American Chianina cattle were 4 prominent sires – Analio I (9 sons with 12,292 ACA progeny); Bando I (4 sons with 12,076 progeny); Bramante I (2 sons with 7,930 calves), and Cavetto I (19 sons with 18,029 progeny). More than 50,000 progeny of these Italian grandsires were registered in the ACA. Bando I was bred at LaFratta. The other three sires were widely used herd bulls at Fattoria di Radi (Radi Farm) near Siena, Italy, one of the largest Italian herds numbering up to 500 head.

The Beginning of the American Chianina Association –

With the growing interest in Chianina in the U.S, 45 cattlemen convened in Denver, Colo., in December 1971 to investigate the establishment of a national breed association.

“During this meeting Dr. Jack Phillips, Blue Springs, Mo., was appointed interim CEO to begin the process of developing an association structure and by-laws,” says Koonce. An American Chianina Association (ACA) organizational meeting was then held June 9 -10, 1972, at the Downtown Hilton Inn, Kansas City, Missouri.

More than 600 participants from across America, Canada, Italy, Australia and South Africa attended. A regional organizational plan was presented, with the U.S. divided into 9 regional associations. “The President for each of these geographical areas served on the ACA’s National Board of Directors for 3 year alternating terms. Dr. Jack Phillips was elected as permanent CEO,” says Koonce.

On display at this meeting were cow-calf pairs – some of the oldest half-blood Chianina calves born in the U.S. – including the very first American-born Chianina – IWCB AHI First Diaceto. This was a bull calved at Tannehill Ranch, California on January 31, 1972. A Diaceto I x Brown Swiss heifer from Tannehill was also on display.

“At the concluding evening banquet Tannehill Ranch owner, Charles Hinkle, donated this heifer with all proceeds from her auction going to fund the fledging association. Aptly named Miss Chianina USA, this heifer sold for $20,000 to Twin Wheels Chianina, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wheeler, Mayfield, Ky.”

The first 38 animals registered in the ACA were Italian Fullblood Chianina bulls whose offspring were the foundation of the breed in America.

“Registration #39 was assigned to the first American born calf – IWCB AHI First Diaceto. Miss Chianina USA was #40, becoming the first American-born registered female. Registrations rapidly increased every month in 1972 through 1974 as the first calf crops were recorded with the ACA. ACA memberships grew at an average pace of nearly 100 per month for the first three years of the ACA’s existence,” Koonce says.

The first ACA office was in a farm house near Blue Springs, Mo. The official mailing address was a Kansas City, Mo., post office box. “The summer of 1973 saw the ACA move into a Blue Springs, Mo., bank building space. It remained in Blue Springs until about 1983. The new ACA CEO, Jack Barr, led a fund raising campaign in 1981 for a new office in Platte City, Mo. A special auction of donated Chianina embryos was held during the 1981 ACA National Show, raising enough money to bring this endeavor to fruition. ACA Board member J.T. Pass of Texas was instrumental in the design and building of this office,” says Koonce.

A breed publication, the American Chianina Journal (ACJ) was begun in April 1973 and published many years on a monthly basis. The first editor was Carol Humphrey. The next editor was Betty Davis who had previous experience at the American Hereford Journal. The first ACJ fieldman was Richard Koonce, serving through 1980 when he had to back away due to health problems. He was replaced by Gary Emberson, followed by Terry Atchison in 1984. The first summer Herd Reference Issue was the June/July edition of 1978 and continues annually. Later the ACJ became a quarterly publication.

Jerry Schaefer/Schaefer Chiangus – Des Lacs, ND

Size & Type of Operation

We currently run 200 plus cows and they are owned primarily with my son Bryan. Our herd is mostly Chiangus based cows with some purebred and commercial females also.

How did you get started raising Chianina cattle?

Having 6 sons that were showing cattle, we noticed that Chiangus were standing at the top of the class. We thought we would start raising our own Chiangus and we soon found out how productive mother cows they were.

Why have you continued to raise Chianina cattle?

We’ve been raising Chi cattle since

1979 when we started AI’ing and doing embryo work. We have continued to do this because of the power of the genetics and the longevity of the cows. Chi cattle will do more on the first cross that any other cattle.

What is your favorite memory involving Chianina cattle or the ACA?

There are too many memories, but probably the best memory would be the breeders and families we met through the ACA. Also heading up two junior national shows that were held at the North Dakota State Fair.

Favorite bull or cow?

Our favorite bull was one we raised - JSC Franchise. Our favorite female would be JSC Crystal…guess what? A

Franchise daughter!

Advice for new breeders?

You probably already expect good things because we are a new breeder. Take these genetics to the feedlot, cow herd or the show ring. Imagine if these genetics work in the show ring how good they will be in the feedlot.

Anything else you would like to add?

Time has a way of getting away too fast but stop and be thankful for all God has given us, our friends, our lives, but most of all our family.

Gary Laabs/Laabs Cattle Company – Clear Lake, IA

Anything else you would like to add?

We are not actively raising Chi cattle anymore, but when we did we had 165 cows and had an annual sale each October. WE are retired

and go south in the winter and enjoy the north in the summer. We have always loved Chi-influenced cattle and think they are great. We enjoyed the many friends we met in the Chi busi-

ness and watch the Chi business still. Simply put – they were great years for our family.

We have a cow/calf operation and run approximately 85 momma cows and calves. We place 130 embryos through our ET program in co-op herds. We have a high emphasis on show cattle and our breeding program. We raised and sell steers, heifers and bulls each year.

How did you get started raising Chianina cattle?

I had shown a few Chi-influenced steers which lead to my start with Gale Long and John Coble, working for Valiant Farms and Alson Ranch. I liked the breed and the high quality look they presented.

Why have you continued to raise Chianina cattle?

We love the breed and the cows and they have the look that we love raising for show cattle. The Chianina

breed has made such a high impact in the show ring and has made our show cattle business very successful.

What is your favorite memory involving Chianina cattle or the ACA?

I was honored to be selected Herdsman of the Year and then our son Tyler and our son-in-law Kurtis were both ACA Herdsman of the Year. We have been fortunate to have multiple champions. A special highlight was winning the Chiangus Classic and the Fullblood Classic the same year.

Advice for new breeders? Raise the kind you like. Believe

in your program and have a vision for what you want to accomplish in 5 years. Don’t get caught up in fads.

It’s been an honor, raising our family, showing and breeding Chianina cattle. We are proud of the progeny of some of our favorite donor cows. It has been so neat to see the breed evolve and change and to see so many prestigious programs using and raising Chi influenced bulls and females.

Walt Dickson/Smoky Mountain Farm – Knoxville, TN

Size & Type of Operation

Our operation currently has 40 mature cows and 17 first calf heifers. We sell club calves, those not good enough we feed to 1,400 pounds and sell to freezer beef customers.

How did you get started raising Chianina cattle?

I met Truman Kingsly from North Dakota and was impressed with his “Continental” cattle that were about 50% Chianina.

Why have you continued to raise Chianina cattle?

I still use some Chianina semen to raise club calves.

What is your favorite memory involving Chianina cattle or the ACA?

The 1991 Louisville National Champion Chi Bull, SMF Lassiter, and his dam “Lois” bred by Scotty Sumption. She was named Grand Champion at the 1989 Louisville National Show.

Favorite bull or cow?

TK Glacier and SMF Lassiter who was a out of a Glacier daughter.

Advice for new breeders?

Some Chi blood adds performance, clean fronts, and that show ring look to make show cattle competitive.

Anything else you would like to add?

I have fond memories of the purebred Chi’s. They were so good and so smart. By far the most intelligent cattle ever.

We run a small cow/calf, seedstock and show calf operation.

How did you get started raising Chianina cattle?

My father, Dale, bred his registered Angus cows (60 head) to two fullblood bulls of ABS (Ferrero & Fillipo) in the spring of 1972. I was really amazed at the performance and look of this hybrid cross.

Why have you continued to raise Chianina cattle?

After college, 2 years in the Army (1973 & 1974) and then dental

school and establishing our own herd in 1981, we were still excited about the mothering ability and show dominance of Chi-influenced cattle.

What is your favorite memory involving Chianina cattle or the ACA?

Our kids (Kyle, Allie & Brittany) showing at the NJHS for 14 years straight and making many friends along the way.

Favorite bull or cow?

RSRS Fancy won many shows (16) and was named Champion at the Indiana State Fair. “Excalibur” winning

Kent Schmid/KJS Chianina – Van Wert, OH

Size & Type of Operation

We operate a small herd of Chianina and Chiangus cows. We have varied in number from 5 to 14 cows over the years.

How did you get started raising Chianina cattle?

I purchased my first Chi female from a gentleman in southern Ohio who had a different breed of cattle but was trying out a couple halfblood Chi cows on his farm. That female was a 3/4 blood and my first calf out of her was a heifer (7/8 purebred) by the bull Ildeno. I showed that heifer at the Mid-East Region Show in Lima, Ohio. She was calf champion and I was hooked on showing Chianina cattle!

Why have you continued to raise Chianina cattle?

The breed is great for commercial production and the show ring. There has been a lot of changes in size

and type of these cattle in 40 years. Selective breeding and mating to other breeds makes these cattle very versatile.

What is your favorite memory involving Chianina cattle or the ACA?

The cattle and showing them have been a lot of fun. I was privileged to be president of the Ohio Chianina Association for several years. We have met many great people and made several lifetime great friends!

Favorite bull or cow?

Lots of memories! I have been fortunate to have sold several bulls to other breeders and commercial cattlemen. From Fullbloods to Percentage Chianina and Chiangus. From Mexico to Cananda!

Advice for new breeders?

Ask advise from experienced Chianina breeders and other breeds. Find out how their matings work. Go

National Champion Chiangus Bull in 2013 was also a highlight.

Advice for new breeders?

Breed cattle that work for you and be committed to the breed and get involved with the ACA family.

Anything else you would like to add?

We cherish the many friends we have made over the years and feel the time our family has invested in the ACA has been well worth it. Thank you to all who have helped us along this great journey!

ACA 50th Anniversary Celebration

The American Chianina Association was created in June 1972 and celebrated its 50th Anniversary during the American Chianina Association National Show in Louisville in November 2022. At the 50th Anniversary reception, members were able to reminisce with fellow members and friends, remembering the past years and looking forward to the future. Ken Geuns of Michigan, gave a great talk about the association, covering the early years through the present. Staff and members from across the country compiled memorabilia for the event, allowing those in attendance to take a walk back in time through the last 50 years.

NEW BOARD MEMBER BIOS

Four new board members were elected to 3 year terms on the Board of Directors in October. Travis Pembrook was elected to serve the Southwest Region. Tyler Winegardner, Derek Evans & Katy Satree-Rucker were all elected to serve as At-Large directors.

Pembrook – Oklahoma –Southwest Region Director

Travis and Beth Pembrook, along with their sons Bret and Bryson, operate Pembrook Cattle Company in Fairview, Okla. The Pembrook’s run cattle and operate on land that has been used for the same purposes by five generations of family.

Over the past 20 years Pembrook Cattle Company has developed from a strictly Registered Angus operation to an Angus based operation that now offers Angus and Red Angus based genetics, as well as high quality Chi genetics.

Every Fall and Spring the Pembrook operation showcases and promotes Chi genetics through their annual production sales and has noticed a strong demand from customers for Chi genetics, a demand that continues to grow and show strength.

Travis and Beth attribute this growth to a quality product that checks multiple boxes for breeders and exhibitors, and most importantly a strong association, board and staff that has done an excellent job setting a course and promoting the Chianina breed. The staff and membership is welcoming to new people coming into the breed and the Junior program of the breed is a huge attraction and bright spot to new breeders and families entering the breed as well.

Travis is excited to be joining the Chianina Association Board of Directors and looks forward to working with other breeders and

Chianina staff to continue to promote the breed and its product.

Tyler Winegardner – Ohio –At Large Director

I was born and raised on a Chianina operation that is still family owned. Along with my dad Brad and brother-in-law Kurtis Klingaman, we run around 75 mature cows and do an extensive ET program where we utilize other producers to raise our calves. We have an annual production sale the first Saturday in November and sell steers private treaty starting in September.

I am a graduate of Black Hawk East and Michigan State University where I majored in animal science and was on the livestock judging teams both places.

My wife Natalie and I have two sons, Beckett and Ryker, and are excited about both of them being apart of the cattle industry as well.

I have enjoyed serving the membership the last three years and it’s exciting to see the things we have accomplished as a breed and the momentum we have. I look forward to the next three years and all we can accomplish together.

Derek Evans – Kentucky – At Large Director

I grew up in Central Illinois, raised mainly in the Hereford breed. I was first introduced

to Chi influenced cattle while attending Oklahoma State University and working for Brian McKay. A few years later, I went on to manage a Simmental Operation in Kentucky, where I met my wife, Kelsey (Culp). As many of you know, the Culp family has been diligent in their service to the ACA. Kelsey and I chose to develop a cattle operation based on cattle that perform great in the show ring but more importantly in the pasture. With our family’s wide array of Chiangus and Chi influenced genetics, these have been the foundation to our current operation. Both Kelsey and I knew that raising Chiangus cattle was where our goals could be achieved, as we feel this is the heart of this breed. Although my own roots don’t run incredibly deep within the ACA, I’m passionate about the Chianina breed. The type of cattle we raise and the future we have ahead is the fire that keeps me pushing forward to make this Association a staple that everyone looks to as model of success.

I have enjoyed serving on the board for the last three years and look forward to the next three. I would like to help drive the commercial base back into the breed. We must be creative in finding ways to market cattle that are designed for the show ring and on the rail. As a good friend of mine once said, “We don’t raise show cattle, I HATE when people say that. We raise cattle that excel in their phenotype AND genotype because ultimately, everything is going to end up on a plate. Collectively, we as a

breed must work towards producing bulls that appeal to the commercial cattleman and emphasize the Hybrid Advantage, while also educating them on impact our breed can make on their bottom-line.

I also want to continue to build a strong junior program and open additional marketing opportunities for our breeders. We as an association and breed rely on our breeders for success. But they rely on the success and opportunities we create for their customers. We need to push very hard for more junior involvement to help mold the leaders of tomorrow today and I can’t think of a better organization to be involved in than the AJCA.

The ACA has been through a series of highs and lows since I’ve become involved, but that’s what has gotten us to where we are now. In the next 5-10 years, I believe the association will flourish and be a staple for other breeds to model after.

A company is only as good as the people you hire. I feel the ACA has done a fabulous job hiring high quality staff. The Junior program with Heather at the helm is in the right hands. She has done an exceptional job with Junior Nationals, the junior board, and the ACJ is the best it has been in a very long time. Hiring Dustin as our CEO has been a huge shot in the arm. He is excited about the

breed and is doing a great job leading our Association. Registration and membership numbers are at all time highs in recent years. The girls in the office are top notch and their customer service can’t be beat. We are in good hands!

In closing I would like to thank the ACA staff and breeders for giving me the opportunity to serve on the ACA Board of Directors. I would also be remiss if I didn’t thank my family for their support in this endeavor. If anyone ever has questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or other board members. Afterall, we are here to help assist and serve the members!

Katy Satree-Rucker – Texas – At Large Director

My family operation, Doug Satree Cattle Company, has been raising Chi and Chiangus cattle for over 20 years. We strongly believe in the value and usability of Chi/Chiangus cattle in both a show ring and practical setting.

I believe that the Chianina breed has a special type of versatility that has been untapped across the greater segment of the beef industry. From added growth, longevity, vitality and carcass merit, I believe that the Chianina breed could be utilized and added to various breeds (especially British breeds) to create a unique and usable animal in all beef cattle segments.

While being on the board, I hope to engage more individuals within my age group to become more active within the breed. Hopefully some added enthusiasm will enliven additional members to be more active.

Through exhibiting and marketing Chi and Chiangus cattle across the nation, we have promoted the usefulness and versatility of these animals. We sell bulls to commercial men and show heifers to juniors.

I look forward to serving on the board and helping move the Association forward.

ACA Board of Directors Meeting

September 28, 2022 • Via Zoom

Ryan Dunklau called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.

Ken moved the June minutes be accepted as corrected. Branscum seconded. Motion carried.

Higgins gave the treasurer report. Foster made the motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Branscum seconded. Motion carried.

Staff Reports:

Heather – American Royal entries are 68 Junior, 72 Open Show, which were up 20 head on entries. We are super excited to be on the other weekend. The Junior Board had a retreat in Kansas City and 9 of the 12 attended. Junior Nationals stuff is underway. Move in is Monday and Show is Friday and Saturday. Journal is coming up and gearing up for our 50th Anniversary.

Dustin – He has made numerous herd visits as well as trips to Indiana State Fair, Nebraska State Fair and pasture sale visits. Next week will head to Nebraska and Iowa. He will hit Oklahoma, Arkansas and swing back up to the Royal. Year to date numbers: 2,635 in registrations, 2,080 Junior memberships (up 318 jr memberships from 2020 right now with 3 busy months left ahead.)

Old Business:

Office Construction Update – Glass was approved by the insurance and has been ordered. Should be started in December hopefully. The building will have new glass

from top to bottom so it will look really nice.

50th Anniversary NAILE – A reception is planned for Monday during NAILE with heavy hours ‘devours and drinks. Staff has numerous plans in the works.

Midland Bull Test – 15 bulls right now. Steve at Midland is in charge of trucking.

Belted Galloway – Their Association reached out to us regarding the possibility of ACA handling their registrations. Board instructed Dustin to talk with them to see what they would like and report back to the board.

New Business:

Cow Calf Rule – how to determine show qualification. Heather & Dustin recommended proposed wording.

Culp made a motion to accept the wording as amended to read as the following

There will be a cow/calf class in each division, and the class winner will show for Grand Champion. Must be a natural calf, at side, with a maximum age limit of 260 days. Calves cannot be split off their dams and shown in individual calf classes. Cows born prior to January 1, 2012 are exempt from the 6.25% rule. Calves must meet % requirements. Note: Cow/Calf pairs need to be nursing their own calves in order to be shown and may be required to have the calf nurse in the ring.

Both the cow and calf must meet the requirements to show in each specific division. (ie. Both qualify for Chiangus to show in the Chiangus show). If one animal of the pair does not meet the requirements, the pair will show in the lowest qualifying division. (ie. A Chiangus cow has a Chianina calf, the pair shows in the Chianina show.) In the event of a discrepancy, decisions as to what division the pair qualifies for will be made by ACA staff.

Schrick seconded. Motion failed 7 to 3.

Board reviewed the Cow/Calf rule as listed for junior nationals. Derek made a

motion adopt the cow/calf rule from junior national with the last sentence removed.

COW/CALF DIVISION - All Shows

Calves exhibited in the cow/calf division are not allowed to show in individual classes. All cows and calves must be registered with the ACA. The maximum age for calves is 260 days. No maximum age limit on the cows. The registration category of the cow determines the division in which the pair shows. Calves shown at the cow’s side must be the cow’s natural calf. The exhibitor may be asked to allow the calf to nurse the cow. The ACA minimum percentage rule pertains to all calves in the cow/calf division.

Tice seconded. Motion carried 8-2. Culp made the motion to make the rule effective May 1, 2023. Evans seconded. Motion carried.

NJHS Judge Lists – The junior board will select junior national judges at their meeting in Louisville. All ACA board members were asked to email 5 names to Heather by Monday morning. A list will be compiled and Heather will send back for adult board to rank and review to create the list to give to the junior board.

B&O Show in Chi-Composite Show – Last year there were 16 B&O Composites, which is more than any other show. Justin made a motion to implement a Bred & Owned Composite Show following the same format as other Bred & Owned Shows at Junior Nationals. Evans seconded. Motion carried. Effective with the 2023 Junior Nationals.

Ohio Beef Expo Sale – Dec 1 need to know what we have. Need 20 lots to have a sale.

-C- The Difference National Sale – The sale will be Jan. 7 at Cattlemen’s Congress Deadline is after NAILE. Pictures requested before Thanksgiving. November 15 is entry deadline for Cattlemen’s Congress. We will utilize the same sale staff.

Electronic Voting for board member elections – Board tabled for future discussion.
