What Do Seniors Fear the Most?
When the EAR Foundation and Clarity released their study called “Aging in Place in America”, the findings were quite striking. The study was aimed at examining the attitudes and anxieties of the nation’s elderly population. What the study came to find was that seniors are fearful of having to leave their homes. In fact, losing their independence is a larger fear than dying. This fear stems from a loss of connection to the home and environment that they have built over their life. It is clear that moving into a nursing home could have the detrimental effect of creating a greater distance between them and their loved ones, including children, other family, and friends. The study found that 89% of seniors want to age in place, or grow older without having to move from their homes, and more than half are scared with their ability to take care of themselves at home.
Baby Boomers Are Worried for Their Parents!
The study also found that Baby Boomer children of elders could end up feeling helpless when faced with the choice of moving their parents out of home. The study found that 82% of the children fear their parents will be mistreated in a nursing home and 89% fear their parents will end up becoming depressed. It is obvious that seniors and their families are determined to have them remaining to live at home. So what is standing in the way?
