FRANKIE,
I’M A LOVER NOT A FIGHTER Give a pit bull a chance to love you. By Teresa M Harris (Frankie’s mama)
How did Frankie become part of your family? Frankie was originally seized with 55 other dogs in a FBI drug raid in Pensacola, FL. The dogs were neglected, starved, emaciated, and on 2-foot-long logging chains. Some of the dogs did not have teeth from trying to eat rocks, others had been fought or used as bait training dogs, and still others were used as breeding dogs. The animals were held as evidence at the Escambia County Animal Shelter. Unbelievably, the judge ordered a number of the dogs to be returned to the owners and the remaining 22 dogs were allowed to be transferred out to local rescues for adoption. The Pensacola News Journal ran a story about the dogs being available for adoption, so I hurried over to adopt one, as my first pit bull, Abbey, needed a playmate. I adopted a 6-month-old boy and named him Frankie in honor of the founder of the Junior Humane Society of Pensacola, Frankie Van Horn Harris, who fought hard to have the dogs rescued. When did Frankie become a registered therapy dog? We attended Best Paw Forward training with Rebecca Watford who helped me train my first pit bull, Abbey. At that time, Rebecca was one of very few trainers who allowed pit bull type dogs in her classes. Rebecca also has a very

AMAZING DOG! keen eye for animal behavior and often helps people adopt a dog which best suits their personality and lifestyles. Rebecca's experience with therapy work and behavior evaluation skills allows her to recommend dogs for therapy work. She quickly recognized the behavior traits required for therapy work in Frankie, and recommended he start down that path. After graduating Beginning and Advanced obedience classes with BPF, we then began training for the AKC's Canine Good Citizen award. Frankie was awarded the CGC, so we were off to start training for his therapy registration with Cheryl Peterson of Emerald Coast Furever Friends. The classes were for the Pet Partners Therapy organization, formerly known as Delta Society. The training was not just for Frankie, I had a lot to learn as well. Frankie not only earned the registration, he earned their highest level of registration titled "Complex." The "Complex" certification on his therapy registration is awarded to dogs who test well enough to be allowed in facilities with little employee supervision, such as a nursing ward with one or two nurses present for the whole floor. He was one of only 2 dogs in his class to earn the complex certification.
What is a typical day or weekend like for Frankie? Frankie likes to keep in touch with his faithful and loving fans who he refers to as his "aunties, uncles, and fwiends." He's built such a loving and supportive network online, and we look forward to interacting with them all each day. On weekends, Frankie and I like to take training walks in populated tourist areas to demonstrate to the public just how friendly pit bull type dogs can be in the right hands. We have a lot of fun talking to people, changing minds, and of course, dealing with the "paparazzi." People love to have their picture taken with him. They're always amazed at his ability to sit and stay for a picture, and get such a kick out of all the hand signals
to which he responds. We also just discovered the wonderful community pack walks organized by the newly formed Animal Welfare League of Arlington Pit Crew! They offer free training at community events and group pack walks in the surrounding DC area.
Does Frankie have any best friends that he plays with?
Frankie has 4 dog siblings and 2 kitty siblings; Abbey (pit bull), Bubba Red (pit bull), Laney (golden retriever), Cherry Pie (11-year-old chihuahua mix), and Toby and Mojo (kitty brothers). They get along very well and he loves to make them chase him around the yard. We're new to Washington DC so we're still making friends here, but two of his best friends from online are Elle the Pit Bull and Skyler the Therapy Dog. The three dogs founded the newly created pit bull advocacy page, Pittie Nation. Elle and Skyler visit DC quite often, and the three dogs have always gotten along very well. I s there any person that Frankie helped changed their perception about Pit Bulls? There are seriously too many to count! Frankie's friendly face and happy
go-lucky personality win people over every time. One such example is when he and I attended an art festival where two well-to-do ladies approached and played with him for a good long while. When they asked me what type of dog he is, their response was one I'll never forget, "We had no idea he is a pit bull, had we known we wouldn't have approached, but we're so glad we did!" The number one tool in Frankie's advocacy arsenal is his butt! Yes, you read that right, his butt. Frankie has a signature move he makes when he meets a person or another dog for the first time - he trots over happily, and quickly makes a 180 to show them his butt. It is the funniest thing, and immediately removes any fear one might have. And did you say booty scratches? He will seriously love you forever if you scratch his butt. Booty scratches make him lift his head in pure elation and joy. It's absolutely heart warming to listen to the giggles coming from people visiting him, and their smiles will live in my memory forever.

Humane Society for Hamilton County networked Ken on their Website, created a Facebook fan page for "Ken" and never stopped believing a family was going to adopt him! BY DANIELLE GORMAN (Ken’s new mama)
How did hear about Ken?
I had been looking on the Humane Society for Hamilton County (in Noblesville, IN) website, paying close attention to their “Featured 50,” which were their 25 most urgent cats and 25 most urgent dogs. My husband and I had seen Ken and got a kick out of his picture (he was wearing a sheriff ’s outfit)! However, we had actually gone in to the shelter to look at another dog that had been there for about 16 months. When we arrived and told them the dog we were interested in, they told us that he had a meet and greet the day prior and was having another one that day with potential adopters. They asked us what we were looking for, asked about our current dogs, and told us about Ken. We agreed to meet him, and I think we all know where it goes from there.
Describe the first time you met with Ken at the shelter? The first time we met with Ken was a bit intimidating at first. We have never adopted an older dog; both of our dogs were just 8-weeks-old when we got them. Ken, on the other hand, was a 65-pound, stalky, 3-year-old boy. In addition, we were told before we met him that he was a bit weary of strangers, so we should let him approach us. He gave us a few treats, had us sit down, and then brought Ken into the room. I must admit that I was a bit nervous when he first entered the room. However, he came right to us, sniffed around (probably smelled our dogs and decided that we must be okay people), and gently took the treats. The handler was sitting on the floor at this point, and Ken kept going over to him and giving him big kisses on his face.

He was so gentle he even took treats from his mouth. It took no time at all for Ken to be doing the same thing with us. Literally, 2-3 minutes after meeting him he had his front paws in our laps giving us kisses all over our face. We instantly discovered how sweet of a dog he was! We then did the introduction of Ken with our two dogs, and they were all running around having such a good time together. What was the first thing Ken did when he arrived at your house (his new home)? Upon arrival in his new home, Ken sniffed everything. He was funny to watch, as he was being so cautious! He was just lurking around the house, almost like he was trying to sneak around. He also decided it was a good idea to “mark” a couple of things

in the house - like a couch and a jacket hanging on the kitchen chair! Thank goodness our couch was Scotchguarded so it just ran right off! What is a typical day now like for Ken and your other dogs at home? A typical day consists of a lot of playing, then followed by eating, sleeping, and playing some more! They like to go out back and chase each other around the yard, especially in the snow. They go absolutely nuts out there! He is also quite the attention seeker. That being said, if we’re petting one, you better believe he is right there butting in (and licking you in the face if he can reach) and we better be petting him too. Does Ken have any best friends or buddies that he likes to play with? When we first brought him home, there was no doubt that our lab mix Holly
was his favorite. He could not leave her alone. It was (is) pretty cute really - he’d casually walk towards her, bite at her to get her attention, and then turn the other direction and jog off like he didn’t do anything. If that didn’t work right away, he’d do it until she decided to play with him. However, now that our dog Tanner has warmed up to the idea of another male playing with his sister, he and Ken play non-stop. He still plays with Holly, but Tanner is definitely his first choice lately. It’s great when they’re all out back and all three start playing and chasing each other around. What are Ken's favorite activities or favorite toys?
Ken absolutely LOVES playing tug of war, whether it be with us or with one of the dogs. We also have a giant toy tennis ball that he kicks around the house and tries to pick up. It’s quite
comical to watch; he almost has enough air out that he can pick it up, but not quite. You’d think with that big mouth of his he could grab anything! All in all, I’d have to say rope toys are currently his favorite. I must say that above all, his favorite activity is cuddling. He is the biggest baby! He also loves his bones. We got all three of our dogs 24” rawhide bones for Christmas, and he always has it with him. Now that he’s chewed it down (to less than half of what it was!), he likes to play with it, too. He’ll pick it up and toss it around, followed by laying on one of two dog beds we have in the loft to chew on it some more. **Ken has settled in quite nicely in his new home and with his new siblings. ELLE THE PIT BULL Elle hopes to create a better future for pit bulls. She is a AKC Canine Good Citizen, has the AKC Therapy Dog Title, and was awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards for extraordinary merit in the Therapy Dogs category. Elle’s life is dedicated to improving the lives of others by helping children at schools and the library with her therapy dog reading program called, "Tail Wagging Tales." Elle goes on pack walks in our community to spread positive pit bull awareness and she loves helping her furry friends in need by raising money and educating pet parents at local events. Elle is a pit bull "pawin" it forward!

BOSS (VILLALOBOS RESCUE CENTER) Boss is a Staffy pit bull mix that was on death row and was rescued by Villalobos Rescue Center in 2010 and found his forever home in 2011. Since then, he has competed in dog surf contests and attended many family dog events; not only to be a social dog, but to show people the pit bull breed is a very loving dog. Boss has changed countless peoples' minds, broken many negative stereotypes, and made a lot of friends on the way. Boss' website has also helped numerous rescue groups save and adopt out other dogs, including one female pit bull that currently lives with Boss. Lastly, Boss is working on finishing his Canine Good Citizen training to become a therapy dog to visit retirement homes, as well as children in special needs classes that are waiting for him to visit and brighten up their day.

LILLY THE HERO PIT BULL
On May 4, 2012, Lilly the Hero Pit Bull was struck by a freight train as she pulled her unconscious owner off a set of railroad tracks in Shirley, Massachusetts. Her heroic actions have spurred a worldwide following where she attends many meet and greets, host area fundraisers, and has even been recognized as the "Animal Hero of the Year" by the MSPCA of Boston and many other local animal organizations. Her friends and family work daily to promote the "Lilly Fund" a 501(c3) non-profit that helps to raise money to provide care and support pit bulls in the care of foster settings. We design and sell pit bull positive merchandise and educate the general public in the consideration of the pit bull as a wonderful and beloved family pet. Lady Bug was rescued from the streets on October 14, 2009. Her gentle and loving nature was obvious from the moment she stepped foot on what is now her home. Being a mixed pibble, we have found that people are more acceptable to her! Once she charms them over, we enjoy dropping the bombshell that she is part of the so called, *Pit Bull* breed. It pleases us that these people who were anti-pibble, suddenly stop and think, and realize that these dogs are loving and wonderful! Lady Bug promotes positive breed advocacy on her Facebook page. She is a strong supporter of the rights of death row dogs and advocates for them daily. Her bucket list for the year 2014 includes obtaining her CGC certificate! SKYLER THE THERAPY DOG

Skyler is a licensed Therapy dog, Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.), and has her C.G.C. She loves promoting positive Pit Bull awareness through her visits to the hospitals, schools, and rehab centers. Skyler also works closely with Pit Sisters, a Pit Bull rescue in Jacksonville, FL, promoting awareness at some of their fundraising events. Most recently we have joined forces with Elle the Pit Bull and Frankie I'm a Lover Not a Fighter and have started an advocacy group called Pittie Nation. WALLACE THE PIT BULL

Wallace was targeted for euthanasia largely due to his appearance. Volunteers rallied to save Wallace, and succeeded. He went on to become a National and World Champion in the sport of Canine Flying Disc. Wallace is known globally, and his story (written by NY Times Best Selling Author Jim Gorant) was just released this past fall. Upon the release of the book, Wallace went through emergency surgery and a blood transfusion. Unfortunately, the diagnosisis is a terminal cancer, but he is still living life to the fullest. CUDA CARES Cuda is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier - a pit bull type dog, originally advertised and sold for $50 off a Craigslist ad when she was 4 months old. She came to us via the buyer a month later. We were chastised by breeders once we started posting photos of her everywhere. They told us how in-bred she was and that her breeder should have terminated her life upon birth. That's when we decided to make her difficult beginnings by creating awareness against backyard breeding, especially for pit bull type dogs. She has taught so many people about irresponsible breeding, pet overpopulation, the need to spay and neuter, and the need to adopt, not shop, by attending animal events, going to classrooms, and by hanging out at the UCSPCA with me. MILO'S WORLD Milo promotes positive pit bull awareness by simply educating others about what Breed Specific Legislation is. BOOKER THE PIT BULL SERVICE DOG Booker was confiscated in a drug bust 3 years ago and was rescued by Adopta-Bull, a Tucson area bully breed rescue. Four months later, Booker was adopted and is doing great! His owner's life changed drastically, as she started suffering from seizures. Booker started warning his owner of these impending seizures. He returned to training and was certified as a seizure alert service dog last year. He now accompanies his owner everywhere, and has given her back her independence. SADIE WONDER PUP Sadie Wonder Pup was born in an animal shelter in Los Angeles. She became very sick and had demodex mange and was going to be euthanized but she was saved by Smashface Rescue. We adopted her when she was 4-months-old. When she was 19-months-old she became a mobility service dog. She helps with balance and bracing as I have a permanently unstable knee. In fact, she is a prescription from my orthopedic surgeon! We hike on average 100 miles every month and earn money for charities with every mile that we track by GPS. Petunia is a 2.5-year-old 'pitbull' type dog who was rescued from a hoarding situation in January of 2012. She was kept in an outdoor pen and was not given any love or socialization. While waiting for her forever home, she is helping other dogs and people by showing them through her everyday life that just because you may not have a great start in life, doesn't mean you can't have a great future. Hector was one of the 51 dogs seized from Michael Vick's dog fighting operation. He has scars all down his chest and legs, is missing a couple teeth, and a notch out of his tongue, but his scars are all external. Once given the chance to just be a dog, he never looked back. He's passed his CGC twice and is a certified Therapy Dog through TDI. Hector enjoys spending time with children, and teaching them how to properly approach and interact with a dog. BEAU: AMERICAN RESCUE DOG Beau passed his therapy dog test seven months after being adopted from the shelter where his "mom" volunteered taking photos of the available dogs. PATCH O' PITS THERAPY DOGS Apache, Patcheeno, Steel, Bodacious, Touché, and Patchronus Charm are Therapy Dogs with CGC's and enjoy working in hospitals visiting hospice, oncology, pediatrics, and radiation care patients. They also spend time at libraries and schools helping kids to read. Six pooches with a knack for assisting those in need and educating people about the breed. SLATER BUEHRLE Slater was rescued from animal care and control on his last day and we adopted him from Hope Rescues in Alton, IL. With Slater being banned in Miami and Toronto has been national news, it's helping to raise awareness about BSL. He is training to become a therapy dog and helps to erase fear of pit bull type dogs. Slater's famous daddy is baseball pitcher Mark Buehrle.
STEVIE THE WONDER DOG Stevie is a blind pit bull that was rescued by the Utah Animal Advocacy Foundation. Despite his handicap, Stevie is a very happy guy who loves being out in the world meeting new people and other dogs. Here are some easy options to start a savings account for your pet! Open a separate savings account in your name, with a debit card for this account, that will solely be used for your pet’s future medical bills.
Write a check every month for $25 and put it in your separate savings account. In 5 years, there will be $1500 saved up, which can go a long way towards vet bills.
Keep a large, empty coffee can, a “doggie jar,” and put all your loose change in the can everyday, and then 2-3 times a year, deposit the monies in the savings account.
Open an account on eBay and have an online auction to get rid of, “things or stuff or junk,” that have been sitting in your closets or cabinets for years.
Have a garage sale 2 -3 times a year, in the summer or fall, and all the money made goes into your savings account set up for your pets.
If you have good credit, get a new credit card with a 3-5k limit that you designate just for your dog’s future medical bills. (Use the card every few months for small purchases so the card doesn’t get cancelled.) Keep a zero balance available on this credit card so if a vet emergency happens, you have the credit card available for treatment.
If you are creative or artistic, make some arts and crafts (for pets) and sell your products at the local art festivals or farmers markets in your town. Put the net profits in your pet’s savings account.

“Hattie’s Helpers is a group dedicated in honor of my Hearing Dog named Hattie, who was trained by Dogs for the Deaf, Inc. Hattie is not only “my ears,” she is my partner and best friend too!” MY LIFE BEFORE HATTIE Before Hattie came into my life, I was dependent upon various signaling devices to help me with my sound awareness needs. At that time, being a single deaf woman in a hearing world proved to be a daily struggle and exhausting challenge. The signaling devices I used to help me hear the various sounds in my home such as the phone ringing, someone knocking on my door, or the smoke detector, consisted of a device flashing or a lamp blinking. After moving into my first apartment, I never knew how heavily I relied upon my parents for the
simplest of things I could not hear such as the alarm clock beeping, telephone ringing, microwave beep, oven timer, dryer timer, and so forth. I also came to realize that these signaling devices, while helpful, were also faulty. Each one ran on either electricity or batteries. If the electricity would go out, the devices failed to work. If the batteries went dead, the devices would fail to work. The strobe light door knocker device I used to alert me as to when someone was at the door ran by feeding off radio frequencies. Numerous times, I was alerted by this flashing device that someone was at my door,

only to discover there was no one there when I answered. This device was easily set off by my neighbor’s remote garage door opener. Life on my own was indeed frustrating and very scary. Every night, I laid awake frozen in fear that the strobe light smoke detector I used would fail to alert me to impending danger or to a fire if the electricity would go out. My life consisted of non-stop worrying and very little sleep. I missed many visitors and telephone calls because if I was not in the room where the signaling device was located, I did not see it signal that someone was calling or at my door.
WORKING DOGS LIFE WITH HATTIE
I thought there has to be something more out there, so I went to my computer and researched online for any hope or additional options that might be available to me so I could live a peaceful life of sound awareness. During my research, that is when I came across the Dogs for the Deaf Website. I searched through every page of their website and read about these wonderful canine companions that were trained for individuals like myself. I could feel the excitement and hope bubble up inside of me! Without hesitation, I immediately requested one of their applications to apply for a Hearing Dog. After taking that first step, little did I know just how real a life full of sound was to come. I applied for a Hearing Dog through Dogs for the Deaf in January of 2006.
Once my initial application was approved, shortly thereafter I received a letter from Dogs for the Deaf stating I was an approved applicant for one of their Hearing Dogs. A good faith deposit was required to put me on their wait list and a packet requesting more in-depth information about me, my home, my life, and my hearing loss needed to be filled out. An in-home interview was also required. In October of 2006, I had my in-home interview for Dogs for the Deaf and my good faith deposit was processed. The application process was complete, now I wait. On August 28, 2007, I received the life changing phone call from Dogs for the Deaf stating that one of their Hearing Dogs named Hattie, a beautiful Chocolate Lab that was about 18 months old was chosen for me.
On Friday, September 14, 2007 Hattie and her trainer arrived at my home for placement week. Placement week consists of meeting the dog, learning how they alert to the various sounds they were trained to perform, and bonding with the dog. Hattie needed to learn where the sounds were located in my home in order to perform her sound work duties. In turn, I had to learn the proper way to work with Hattie, reward her, and many other things such as her obedience commands in order for us to be a successful team. The most important part of placement week is teaching the dog that they are no longer to alert their trainer to the sounds, Hattie was now to learn to alert me of the sounds she was trained to perform. Dogs for the Deaf trains their dogs using, "The Three P's - Patience, Practice and Praise." Dogs for the Deaf also calls the first year you are a team "The Bonding Year." You learn about your dog’s personality and vice versa. You literally learn about one another each and every day. Each day during placement week, we repeated these three P's over and over each time Hattie alerted me to one of the sounds she was trained for. I remember the first night we spent together during placement week. I did not worry about the smoke detector, instead, I laid my hand on her all night long just to convince myself that this was not a dream. Hattie was in training at Dogs for the Deaf for 8 months, where she learned obedience skills and the skills to perform her sound work duties. Hattie was the first dog at Dogs for the Deaf trained to alert their person (me) by tapping with their nose. Hattie was trained to alert to the sounds of the oven timer, microwave, door bell, door knock, smoke detector, alarm clock, telephone, and name call. When Hattie hears a sound, she alerts me by tapping me on the leg with her nose. This is her alert signal and I know I am to follow her. She then takes me to the sound she is alerting me to - be it the oven,

WORKING DOGS telephone, microwave, or someone at the door, and then she sits. She is then rewarded with praise, affection, and a treat. Hattie performs her sound work duties with unwavering dedication. She loves her job "as my ears" so much she has alerted me to many things she was not trained to alert to such as a flock of geese flying over head, the ice cream truck going through town, and the garbage truck every Monday morning. As to how Hattie changed my life, the list is never ending. I no longer walk through my home feeling as if I am walking on eggshells. The telephone sits in its cradle as it does in every other home. I no longer walk with it in hand in order to check the caller ID to see what calls I may have missed. I sleep a blissful night’s sleep because I know Hattie will alert me to the sound of the smoke detector. My meals are no longer burnt black pieces resembling charcoal. I actually cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner the first Thanksgiving we were a team. Not a single thing was burnt or forgotten about as it was cooking because Hattie was there to alert me to the sound of the oven timer beeping. My clothes are no longer wrinkled and company is greeted at my door with a happy "Hello" because Hattie is there to tell me they are knocking or ringing the doorbell. The very first week we were a team, I was able to do something that before Hattie was only a dream to me. I ordered pizza and had it delivered because I knew Hattie would be there to tell me the delivery man was at the door. It was the best tasting pizza I had ever eaten and was the first milestone in my life of many that were soon to come. Hattie, my faithful companion and Hearing Dog has enabled me to be an independent woman. She has allowed me to find myself and to blossom into being. Because of her, I am a much happier and healthier individual. Hattie has not only changed my life but her presence has had a ripple affect. My family no longer worries about me on a daily basis and Hattie has brought
peace and joy to their lives as well. Consider my girl a miracle worker of sorts, she has touched more lives than just my own. It’s the little things she has helped me with as my Hearing Dog that has turned into big things, true blessings in disguise. Never in my wildest dreams did I think as I was filling out an application for one of Dogs for the Deaf Hearing Dogs, did I know a real life angel would come to me. One with chocolate fur, a tail, and a heart of gold. Hattie helps to break the ice when we are out in public and she has forced me to be more sociable and open to new experiences. Because of Hattie, I was now a much more independent and confident person - so much that Hattie and I became one of the Dogs for the Deaf Ambassador teams. Hattie and I do public speaking events, educational programs and demonstrations for various clubs, organizations, and at schools about Dogs for the Deaf and Hearing Dogs. One such program was for a local school district we visited, a class of third grade students to do a program and demonstration about Hattie and how she helps me on a daily basis. The students were so touched to learn about Hattie and Dogs for the Deaf that as part of their class community service project they adopted Dogs for the Deaf as their organization. The students dubbed themselves, "Hattie's Helpers," and throughout the school year they collect-

ed their spare change, toys and treats to donate to the dogs in training at Dogs for the Deaf in Hattie's honor. This is the story as to how Hattie's Helpers began. Thanks to Hattie helping me be a more open and sociable person, she helped me meet my future husband. When he proposed to me, he actually asked for Hattie's permission first. He knew if Hattie did not approve, there would be no way I would say "Yes!" Hattie was included in all of the wedding plans as well as our special day. Hattie walked me down the aisle with my father to give me away and she stood with us during the ceremony. She wore a collar, leash, and vest that matched the bridal party. Hattie has been a part of every major milestone in my life that has occurred since we became a team. Many times, she is the reason for reaching the milestone in my life. Hattie is not only my Hearing Dog, she is my hero, my companion, best friend, and soul mate. For all these reasons and more, I love her. For what she has given to my life in the 6 years we have been a team, I am forever grateful to her and to Dogs for the Deaf. Hattie has given me a life full of sound, independence, laughter, joy, peace, and so much more.

What inspired you to write your book, Canine Angels ?
When two people decide to write a book about dogs, obviously it’s because they love them unconditionally. I, (Carole Villeneuve), adore dogs. My late father, André, passed on to me his love for these charming animals. For as long as I can remember, my home has included a dog – each one always treated with love and respect, and each a full member of the family. As for me, (Marie-Claude), a dog saved my life when I was a child. Two years ago in California we discovered Dogs for Diabetics, a foundation that provides assistance dogs for diabetics, and other such foundations. Our stay there turned into a whole series of
interviews and exceptional encounters. Back in Quebec, we did more research and conducted more interviews. The testimonials of individuals with different types of assistance dogs were fascinating. The interaction between dog and human quickly became, for us, a passionate subject. The book’s concept developed quite naturally – short accounts complemented by scientific research, everything written in a plain language. How many of the dogs in your book did you meet and spend time with?
We have met with most of the people who relayed to us the story of their life with their assistance or service

dog. We have spent hours with them because each human-dog team is truly fascinating. In some other cases, we have conducted interviews by phone, which were also very interesting. For instance, the first time we spoke with Leslie Hiscock, whose assistance dog anticipates her epileptic seizures, we had been witnesses to something quite remarkable. While Leslie was answering our questions, Ashton, her dog, was trying to warn her of an impending seizure by barking nonstop for minutes. All of a sudden, Leslie told us on the phone, “I got to go now,” then she hung up. A few days later, Leslie confirmed she had a seizure. No matter where she is, Ashton can detect her epileptic seizures 80% of the time. To date, no scientific research can explain how a dog can anticipate his or her master’s epileptic seizures.

Is there any one service dog that made an impact on you?
What do you hope that people will learn from reading your book ?
We have been impressed by all types of assistance dogs that we discovered. For a few years now, assistance dogs have been trained to help diabetics to better control their condition. Thanks to a rigorous training and a welldeveloped olfactory acuity, these dogs can detect low or high blood glucose levels in their master’s blood. When they detect them, they take their bringsel (a small leather strap hooked to their collar) in their mouth and make physical contact with their master. This way, diabetics know that they must check their blood-sugar level.
Dogs are so much more than pets! Even though scientists still do not fully understand many exceptional abilities that dogs possess, we believe we should do our part in making the general public more aware of these abilities. In this way, we hope that many more people living with a given condition or disease can enjoy the benefits offered by an assistance dog.
There are also dogs for people with epilepsy. When an individual has a seizure in a public place, the service dog begins to bark in order to attract people’s attention. When a seizure occurs at home, the dog is trained to fetch a cordless phone and bring it to its master. One-third of these assistance dogs can anticipate a seizure well before it occurs. The majority of those dogs show signs of agitation and endlessly circle their master as if they wanted to protect him. Thus, people with epilepsy have time to get to a safe place avoiding injuries during a seizure. As for autistic children, parents claim they have noticed improvements with their children’s language skills, motricity, and behavior since the arrival of their service dog. Some parents even describe their service dog as a real therapist. That is amazing!
In the years ahead, many new avenues will be open to assistance dogs as the ranks of committed supporters and advocates grow along with the number of trainers and researchers. With over twenty testimonials from people relating how their assistance dog has improved the quality of their life, "Canine Angels" will surely surprise you and move you. Whether these persons are suffering from diabetes, epilepsy, a mental illness, autism, deafness, a physical handicap or blindness, their stories obviously vary. ELLIE MAY and MADI
Training to be therapy dogs, their inspirational spirit brightens the world one smile at a time! By Kathy Dailey (ElLie May and Madi’s mama)
Ellie May and Madi are two sweethearts born on Valentine’s Day 2012. They were born with front limb deformities due to backyard inbreeding. I was contacted about the girls after an ad was posted on Craigslist saying two special needs Chihuahua puppies needing to be rescued quickly, and they needed to be kept together. I drove an hour to pick up the puppies, not really knowing what condition they were in. I was told they were approximately 3 weeks old, needed to be bottle-fed, and required lots of care because of their obvious physical problems. I was informed that Ellie May was the runt. She was just 1 pound and had a hard time feeding since
she couldn't hold herself up because she had no front legs, just two little nubs.

Madi was the larger puppy at 1.6 pounds. She had one small bent front leg with no paw and a thick front leg with two little paws on it. I peeked in the tub and saw two tiny puppies, and I instantly fell in love the moment I saw them! They had the most amazing personalities and were incredibly happy. It wasn't until I got home that I realized just how special needs they were! Once home, I began to bottle feed them round the clock and watched in amazement as they grew and thrived into spunky little dolls! Since they were so tiny, my family
My family immediately fell in love with them and helped me care for their many needs. It was tricky at first getting Ellie May to eat solid food or drink water from a bowl because she would tip forward, head first into the bowls. We worked on many contraptions trying to find better food and water bowls set ups, but in the end Ellie May figured it out all by herself and has done perfect ever since!

Madi learned to walk in a kind of a hop/walk style and she is now able to
HAPPILY EVER AFTER run and often mistaken for any other puppy. She sometimes gets going so fast that her little back end catches up to her front end! Ellie May first learned to get around by propelling herself forward. We worked on various temporary mobility aids to help her get around outside since propelling on concrete and rocks just wasn't practical. Then one day she stood up and began walking upright! She now runs around, kind of like a little Russian dancer when she is not cruising in her fabulous wheelchair. Ellie May received her custom-made Eddie's Wheel's wheelchair with a generous donation from the We are Team London's Pay it Forward Scholarship Fund (www. weareteamlondon.org). Ellie May loves her wheelchair and it gives her the freedom to go on walks with other dogs and it spares her back from all the strain that walking upright puts on her spine. When Madi turns 1 years old, she will receive her custom leg orthotic from OrthoPets (www.orthopets.com), also from the same generous scholarship fund, Team London! I am sure Madi will greatly benefit from her orthotics when she gets it! The girls play and enjoy life like other puppies, but they do require some extra care. I kept the girls together for several months and then after much thought, I adopted Ellie May and my dear friend Angi adopted Madi. This way I knew in my heart, both girls could get the extra care and attention they needed and deserved, and they could both still get together all the time.
Ellie May has some issues with her nubs getting sore and calloused. We also need to monitor her spine and her general body shape because of the unique way she ambulates around on a daily basis. Madi has to be watched because her two front little paws on her one leg splay when she walks. We must be certain they maintain a perfect weight because of the unusual structural issues of their bodies due to their limb deformities so their diet, nutrition, and exercise are always monitored. We have had to be creative with ways to dress them to keep them warm because most clothes just don't fit their special anatomy. The girls have been preparing all year and will start training formally to become therapy dogs once they turn 1 year old in February. They have visited special needs classrooms in schools, regularly gone to sporting events, interacted with school age kids, made home visits with special needs wheelchair kids, visited with various other special needs pets in the valley, and they are constantly being exposed to various aged people at community events. The girls have participated in the Phoenix Alzheimer Foundation Walk and Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade plan on doing other events in the future. We also plan to start them visiting recent amputees and veterans. Ellie May and Madi have been an amazing influence on all they have met. They have touched so many lives with
their positive, "they can do anything" attitude, and they make everyone they meet smile. Ellie May has been a great help to kids in wheelchairs who have been afraid of dogs. When they see her, a dog in a wheelchair, they relate in a positive way to her. The girls have been able to "teach" compassion and understanding too. The puppies were introduced to a child with autism who was frightened at first, and he asked, "Why do they look so weird?" He studied them and noted all their differences asking, "Where are their arms, where are their paws, how do they go to the potty, how do they eat?" But after he spent time observing them, and we answered all his questions and addressed all his concerns, he announced, "Oh, they may be different, but they are great, I guess being different is amazing!" And that about sums these two up. They are different, and unique, and they are amazing! We are so thankful they have changed our lives and we hope they will change others with their incredible spirit and unconditional love they give in their unique, amazing way. Our hope is that they can enlighten and educate more people about how much incredible love a special needs rescue dog can give, and we hope these little pups will continue to brighten this world one smile at a time!

TEAM LONDON THE 2-LEGGED PIT BULL
London is full of life and an inspiration to everyone who meets him! By Frances Gehring (London’s mama)
Describe London's condition when he was rescued. London was rescued as a puppy with fractured front legs. He was transferred to Panda Paws Rescue who specialized in special needs canines. He was taken to Animal Care Clinic in Vancouver, WA, for evaluation, and it was determined that London had two severely fractured, shattered front legs. Both compound fractures in the elbows indicated that he had fallen from significant height. However, it also seemed he was left on hot ground, presumably pavement or asphalt, for quite some time. London had burns covering all of his paw pads and his underbelly. London was left unable to walk, but he learned to adapt and scooted his body around using the power from his hind legs and his face as his frontal tri-pod support.
In August 2012, the truth behind his shattered elbows and vague history came to light. Panda Paws Rescue was provided with statements and evidence depicting brutal attacks on London that had occurred months ago. His legs were not fractured as a result of a fall from a significant height, but that his legs were purposely and deliberately broken at the hands of his previous owners on two separate occasions. The Crescent City Police Department and District Attorney researched the case and multiple suspects have been arrested and have been formally charged with felonies in this case. Trial is set to start end of February 2013. London underwent surgery on August 1st, 2012, performed by Dr. Brandon Sherman at Animal Care Clinic, to remove his two front legs as it was decided that it was the best possible option for his recovery and long-term

quality of life. His journey is one of inspiration and hope. He has a definite will to survive! How did London become part of your family? I saw a picture of London on Facebook. The FB page name, "London the 2 Legged Pit Bull," caught my attention and I started reading his story and found out he was right up the highway in Vancouver at Panda Paws Rescue. I was already considering adding a second dog to my family, and I saw that London would be up for adoption in September after he was fully healed from his double amputation. I fully considered all ramifications of a differently abled dog and realized I was perfectly able and willing to love and care for this guy. Sniff Dog Hotel in September. Of course, I fell in love with him along with every single person there! A few days later, I received an email from Amanda advising that from all the applicants, I was in the top 3 of the best candidates. Then, a couple days later came the phone call that I was chosen to be his adoptive mom! Being thrilled, excited, ecstatic, and overjoyed - none of those really describe how my heart felt that I was chosen to be the one to show London love for the rest of his life! How did your life change with London in your family? Life got busy! We had TV news interviews, a welcome home party for friends to meet London, and attended various charity events that featured London. I had to arrange my home so it was safe and easily maneuverable for London. Also, learning his queues for when he needed to go out, was hungry, or just typical dog stuff. In addition, I taught him how to use his wheelchair outdoors, and spend time keeping him exercised in a way that is appropriate for him and my other dog Max. I also started to contribute to London's Facebook page; adding pictures, video, stories, and answering questions. Life became very busy for a while, but settles down at times, and then gets busy again. Describe the charity work and events Team London does? Once London turns one year old in February, then I can work to have him certified as a Therapy Dog. I've already had requests that he visit senior homes, Randall's Children Hospital, and the children's library reading events. London participates in the local Portland Bully Walks that help to educate and share how wonderful the Bully Breed dogs are. We have attended the Pet Expo where people
were able to meet him and learn more about London's story and differently abled dogs. London was the guest of honor at the OHS Bully Brunch, where various dog rescues came together to educate and work on adoptions of rescue dogs. London will be a guest of honor at the Max Muscle Hazel Dell Half Marathon on Feb. 24, 2013, as well as a Barbershop charity event in the Hollywood area on February 2nd. These events will help to raise funds for the London Scholarship. I also want to get London involved with Children's Special Olympic events, Challenged Athletes Foundation, and the Wounded Warriors program. Who are your favorite non-profit charities? Some of our favorite non-profits are Panda Paws Rescue, the Oregon Humane Society, our own London Scholarship Fund, and Hopes Haven. As I'm able to raise more funds from creating and selling "London" products, then I'll be able to choose more rescues and charities to donate to. I'm creating a website online store called RollOnLondon, where we will sell locally crafted items with a very cool London Logo. I hope to have this up and running in early January 2013! Does London have any best friends that he likes to play with? His brother Max is his best furry buddy at home! He also tends to really love other pibbles; Roadie, Hammy, Romeo, Nanny, and then there’s Gatti, a Corgi mix, and he also adores his Golden Retriever friend, Buckley. London met a very sweet girl named Jazmine, who is also in a wheelchair. They met at the Sniff Dog Hotel meet and greet event. London was lifted to Jazmine's lap and they have been in love ever since. They share the same
birthdate, Feb 14th, so we will have a very special birthday party for them. He showed right away that he has an affinity to others that are differently abled, and I believe he will help many children overcome fear, self-consciousness, and build their self-esteem just by meeting and interacting with London.

Faith's Mission: Charity and Therapy We trained Faith by trial and error to stand on her own two feet. We did not teach her to run - that was a natural event that took place when she was about 15 weeks old. She was bitten on the heel by another foster pup we had, he was a Corgi named Ean. She didn't appreciate his game of playing and showed everyone that day that she was the alpha dog. She stood up, (a feat she had managed since she was about 6 weeks old), and she ran across the backyard toward Ean!

This “I-can-do-anything” attitude, and the difference in her body, is the message we present when we went out to see soldiers and people in hospitals. I can do whatever it is I set myself up to do. I can make it, and I can make a difference because I'm different. I show the world that a dog is naturally a dog, and that they are naturally who they are. That an event such as an accident or injury does not change who we are inside. Faith has been very successful in her mission, and very well received by all who have met her. Faith is retired now, although we will do a few shows for the military. In 2003, when she began her mission, we were working every week for hours and hours. After she appeared on television and in newspapers (in June 2003), Faith and our family began flying to various cities to see television hosts, but we would always try to see people on the street. We also saw many soldiers in airports. That led to her becoming a staple at the military hospitals, but she couldn't go into the wards because she wasn't a therapy dog and she wasn't ranked. The U.S. Army fixed that. We did a training program at home and
completed it. The Army gave her a field recognition of E5 Sgt in June 2006, and from that moment on she was going everywhere. I would speak at other locations in order to make an income, but we never charged the military for appearances. She has flown more than 300 times, mostly with American Airlines, but often, with the military as well. She flies in her own seat with American, no other carrier did that for us other than military. A typical day for Faith involves her lying under the bed and sleeping all day, or watching the activities that pass by her at that level. She doesn't do anything else until it's time to "Go," and then she's the first one out the door! If she sees her military vest she knows we're going to see soldiers. If she sees me packing my backpack, she wiggles out from under the bed and barks constantly until we get into the car. She knows it means we're about to see people, and she loves that. She can take about 2-3 hours with people before she gets tired and wants to head back under the bed. Or if we're out in the world, then she is ready to go back to the hotel and rest.
Faith loves gummi bears and she loves peanut butter! She will literally take your sandwich out of your hand if you wave it around at her height. She is 37" tall, so that's not hard to do. She loves to go to the park and hang out chasing squirrels. For years, we had geese that she chased, and if she didn't make it out to their pond, they would come to the back porch and honk for her.

WHICH SOLID GOLD DOG FOOD IS RIGHT FOR YOUR DOG? The Cute Story Eighteen and a half years ago, Sissy, the owner of Solid Gold, was given a Dane mix to foster. Her mother was a black Dane. Her father was a traveling man. She was about three months old. Sissy already had an adult Dane and was fostering two more adult Danes. So what’s another dog! Sissy took the little dog to the vet to get it fixed. The vet asked her name. She didn’t have one, so the vet wrote down BB for Black Bitch. She became BB. She got all her puppy shots there. A month later, the man returned to pick up the “foster.” “You can’t take my dog. She found a forever home,” he was told. BB remained with Sissy for 18 1/2 years. In November, she was taken to the vet for her 18th birthday for a wellness checkup. This was only her second trip since she never received any other shots but the puppy shots. She was fine.
