SAMMIE THE PIT BULL Photos courtesy of Elaine Taylor
Happiness is a Pit Bull Smile! By Elaine Taylor (Sammie’s mama)
Sammie was rescued in 2007 from a backyard breeder. Since that day she has dedicated her life to education. Sammie works real hard to help educate others about pet overpopulation, responsible pet ownership, and the need to adopt from a rescue or animal shelter. She has assisted in rescuing, transporting and fostering many furry friends while they waited for their forever homes. Sammie has sponsored many death row dogs and funded several spay/neuters with her Facebook page (Sammie the Pit Bull). She advocates for her breed, shares animals in need, and speaks out against animal abuse. Sammie is currently selling T-shirts to help raise funds for nonprofit animal rescues and shelters.
16 Spring 2013 | American Dog Media
When she is not working, Sammie enjoys swimming, going hiking, and making people smile. Sammie has two brothers and two sisters - all are rescues. Duke (Lab) was rescued from life on a chain. Gracie (Pit Bull) was rescued from the streets. Emma (Lab mix) was rescued from a high kill shelter. And Hooch (Pit Bull) was a stray rescued off the streets. We are just one big happy family doing our best to help others. Remember, one share or one act of kindness or one phone call if you see abuse, could save a life.

SOLID GOLD FREEZE DRIED RAW BEEF Many pet owners like to feed raw meat, but the constant recall of raw meat with salmonella poisoning or e.coli has put a stop to many sales. Solid Gold Freeze Dried Raw Meat has solved this problem. We dropped the temperature of the beef to -120˚ below zero. This kills all diseases. Then, we put in a nitrogen flush which takes out all the moisture. The five pack is almost equivalent to 7 pounds of raw meat with the water removed. The single patty pack is equivalent to a pound and a half of raw meat. Spread out pieces or concentrate as needed. Break apart with fingers and mix with kibble or use as a treat or bait. Not greasy. No need to carry a freezer box.
• The closest alternative to raw meat. • Dog or Cat treat or as a part of a meal.
• Can be mixed with kibble. • 44% protein. • Do not re-hydrate
The 5 count package is $19.74 plus shipping Single count package is $4.27 plus shipping We accept all major credit cards as well as checks. To order, call (619) 258-7356, Monday thru Friday 10 am to 5pm pacific time, or go online to www.solidgoldholistic.com.
The Cute Story It had been a long day at the dog show. The owner of two Rhodesian Ridgebacks was exhausted. She was going to rush into a fast food place, grab a sandwich, and then go back to the hotel. She had bought two 5-count Buckaroo Beef packages to mix in with the dry Solid Gold dog food that night. It was easier than trying to open a can of meat. Her two Ridgebacks were sleeping quietly in the van. Should she leave the new packages of Buckaroo Beef in the front seat or not? The two five packs were equivalent to almost 14 lbs. so they couldn’t possibly be that hungry. She had planned to break up the patties for supper, for a bedtime snack and breakfast with kibble. Sounded like a good plan. Rhodesians are very smart. When she returned to her van, all ten patties were gone, they had very carefully opened the packages and enjoyed every bite. Now for a little water, please. So much for the best laid plans---

sPreadInG smIles and haPPIness wherever he Goes! By anGiE nouSiainEn (doZEr’S mama)
I knew the day I brought Dozer home that he was special. As he grew, I noticed his love of all people and his ability to create smiles. A smile is an awesome gift to give someone who doesn’t have one. Dozer has completed four levels of obedience training, received the AKC Canine Good Citizen Award, and is registered with Therapy Dogs Incorporated. He spends his time volunteering at nursing homes, rehab centers, and group homes. He visits families at the Ronald McDonald House and volunteers at our local library letting kids read out loud to him. The

therapy he provides depends on the person’s needs. Some may need the physical therapy of petting him or walking towards him, and some have lost their drive and he provides motivation. Therapy dogs ease stress, lower blood pressure, and promote a feeling of love and warmth. I always knew our visits would make a difference in someone’s life. What I didn’t know then was the difference it would make in mine. My family doesn’t have much money, and gas is sometimes a struggle. However, visiting a 92-year-old woman who has had no other visitors on her birthday or seeing
a sad child grin ear-to-ear - is priceless. I once felt as if I had nothing to give. I know better now. Our future plans include a series of children’s books based on Dozer’s real life adventures as a therapy dog. We hope to inspire others while teaching the world just how loving a dog can be. When the world learns how to love, maybe we can end neglect and abuse of all kinds.

INSPIRATIONAL DOG!
PHOTOS COURTESY OF JOCELYN TAYLOR
SPIKE TAYLOR By Jocelyn Taylor Marcus (Spike’s MUM and translator)
If you were to ask one of Spike’s 21,000 Facebook friends what one word best describes him, they would say, “inspirational.” Weighing in at 4.5 pounds, Spike leads an international online community sharing humor, good deeds, life lessons, and... inspiration. Why inspiration? Because Spike is still here.
‘pack’ to never give up. We’ve received messages saying, “If little Spike can beat the odds, so can I!” When Spike collapsed that day, his diagnosis was congestive heart failure; mitral valve prolapse, stage 4-5 heart murmur, and severely enlarged heart. We prepared for the end - but were happily disappointed.
Spike became a self-made therapy dog, he is a natural. Amazing, considering his life before his rescue consisted of years of neglect and abuse. Spike’s first visit to a nursing home was an instant hit. We brought stuffed animals for my mother, then for some of the residents, and ‘Operation Pet Pals’ was born.
Given only 6 to 8 months to live almost 5 years ago, Spike has confounded and proven vets wrong and has shown his
Our motto became, “It’s not how long you have, it’s what you do while you’re here.” So, we got busy.
Operation Pet Pals provides new stuffed animals to those in need of comfort. We asked for help online, and boxes of

“It’s not about how much time we have, it’s what we do while we’re here.”
stuffed animals came in from across the US. Several people contacted us asking how they could do something similar in their own city. We were humbled. Sharing humor while raising awareness and being a catalyst for kindness is our mission at “Spike’s Place.” We encourage others to spay and neuter, adopt and not shop, consider fostering a senior or special needs animal, and to ‘see’ the black dogs and cats in shelters who are all too often overlooked. Spike also educates that breed discrimination is wrong, as is the case with most generalizations. Most would say Spike’s lived life large since that day long ago. He’s ridden horses, wagons, bicycles, big dogs, and
been in the zombie parade at ComicCon. He’s an honorary “Grommet Mascot” with the famous SoCal Surf Dogs. He’s promoted animal events on TV, opened a Padres game, and answered phones at a telethon. Members of his pack fly to San Diego to meet him and his new rescued brother Scrappy. But the most telling are the notes we receive from his fans that say, “I learned something is wrong with my heart and lungs and just got told 3-5 years. I will attempt to follow in your footsteps with dignity and charity I learned this lesson from you Spike.” “I have started rescuing dogs again because of you.”
“I am in my office, breaking out my old 80's dance moves from high school cheerleading days. Who says lawyers can't have fun! Spike - your posts are good for my soul!” “It’s 5:30 AM here in Australia... My husband is still in bed and I have just woken him up through laughing so much at your post!” For Spike, Scrappy and company, it’s all in a day’s work!

OUTSTANDING DOG!
MAC THE PIT BULL “I am Pit Bull Strong!” by Rochelle Steffen (Mac’s mama)
Mac is a rescued pit bull we bought on a street corner to keep him from being used as a bait dog (or worse). Mac weighed just 4-lbs when we rescued him at 3 months of age on April 7th, 2011. We have no idea how he survived since he was so malnourished, full of mange, and such an overall sick puppy. Our plan was to rehabilitate him and then send him on to rescue. This plan fell apart within days when I realized how special he was.
30 Spring 2013 | American Dog Media
Mac grew so fast those first few months with us, and then we realized he had back leg issues around 9 months of age. He was born with genetic defects in both his back knees and already has hip dysplasia. He has had three surgeries on the same knee since November 21, 2012, and battled a terrible infection. Mac is scheduled for another much more invasive surgery if we can ever get rid of the infection, and if this fails, then he will probably lose his leg.
We haven't even started the journey with his second leg, which will need to be operated on for the same genetic defect. Mac has raised money for both his expensive leg surgeries during the summer of 2012 by selling t-shirts screen printed in our kitchen in his honor that say, "I am pitbull strong." Once we raised the money for him from his t-shirts we realized that people were still buying them! We had a choice to make with what to do with
OUTSTANDING DOG!

the money. At this point, towards the end of 2012, our "pay it forward" campaign started along with his newly named, "Mac's Fund," for other pit bulls in need. Mac now raises money from his t-shirt sales for other pit bulls in rescues to help them find their forever homes. He pays 100% after the cost of the t-shirts to these great dogs in $100 increments. Mac has raised $2400 this year from January to May. Even with his ongoing health problems, he isn't keeping any of this t-shirt money for himself. Mac also has special volunteer time to help socialize and exercise some of the adoptable dogs at The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. I am a true believer in volunteering and he assists as a therapy dog of sorts to the shelter dogs who need some extra help to find their forever homes. In addition, Mac recently started a new special monthly campaign on his Facebook page to send a $50 "doggie goodie box" to dogs we find out about that have cancer, are injured in some capacity,
or need a special pick-me-up. We have had people sponsor their own goodie box to a dog they wanted to help! We order the box of specially tailored items for that dog and then it ships to them. Over the years Mac has fostered/ rescued dozens of dogs. Our home is a "revolving dog house" for any pet that needs time to heal from our local shelter. We have been able to rescue many dogs because of Mac’s social media connections and his friends donating to help with medical expenses. Our two most recent saves have been Moxie, and our newest foster who was pulled from a high-risk situation in San Bernardino, California. Moxie had the worst case of mange we have ever seen and Mac's connections were able to get her pulled, treated, and soon she will be sent to Missouri Pit Bull Rescue in Kansas City, Missouri, and be available for adoption. The newest foster is a puppy that is literally Mac's "mini me twin" that had one day left for a rescue to pull because of mange. Mac's friends online and locally were able to
get the puppy pulled and fostered by a special fan in California. Just recently, this puppy traveled to Missouri with another friend to her new home. Mac is not able to do the things he does with out the generous support of people buying his t-shirts, artwork, or just donating to our goal to help as many pit bulls as possible. Mac has a loving home and wants to pay it forward so others like him can get their forever homes. He has been instrumental using his Facebook page to save a handful of dogs like him that had no hope for a future, until people saw the need to help. We have heard by so many people that he has helped educate them to see pit bulls in a positive light and some have even gone on to adopt their very own pit bull. Mac changes the stigma every day with his positive take on life and sweet personality. He is a true hero to dogs. He truly is "pitbull strong."

the group that deployed with Captain Siebert and was named in his honor. There are many Marines who came home because of the Sieberts, and that should never be forgotten. Siebert quickly settled into the pet lifestyle after receiving an honorable discharge and retiring in late 2012. He claims both the couch and any kids around as his own. He also has an everlasting love for his Kong. He enjoys visiting anyone who will give him a scratch, and sharing his story with
Siebert and his owners have recently connected with Captain Siebert's widow, and she is rooting for him to win the 2013 American Humane Society's Hero Dog Award in honor of her fallen husband. The winner of the competition gets $5,000 donated to the charity of their choice, and their own Hero Dog Award. We would love nothing more than to be able to present Mrs. Siebert with this award in memory of her husband. Siebert is already nominated for the award, and you can help him win! Voting takes place from May 7th to July 30th, and each person can vote daily. They say an Explosives Detection Dog saves approximately 150 lives on each deployment, and Siebert has been on four deployments. If that is not the epitome of a Hero Dog I don't know what is!

CJ SAYS, “BE A SUPERHERO, NOT A BULLY!” By aShTon kEEnan (cJ’S mama)
As humans, we often strive to find purpose, to find something to stand for. Many of us go through life without success. I was one of the lucky ones, I found my purpose. Throughout most of my young life I struggled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which made for a bitter childhood. In order to make myself feel better about my OCD, I picked on other kids and their weaknesses. I was considered a bully. I had very few friends, and was disliked by many of my peers. But, on April 25th 2009, my life changed forever. I adopted my best friend, Cj, from Heartland Humane Society of Missouri. Little did I know that this orange and white ball of fluff would transform me into a caring, young adult. With Cj around, I was able to
42
Spring 2013 | American Dog Media
forget my OCD and find my calling – To help people and animals. Over the past few years, I’ve continued to volunteer and help both people and animals, but more recently, Cj and I have taken on a new task - to stop bullying. According to the National Education Association, an estimated 160,000 kids miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Through the use of Cj’s slogan, “Be a Superhero, NOT a bully,” we are trying to launch a campaign to teach kids, who appear to be the root of the problem, that being a Superhero is so much cooler than being a Bully. My own brother has been a victim of bullying on more than one occasion because of a physical deformity he
was born with. Several times my family and I have had to stop him from doing something drastic, because the constant bullying finally got to him. Suicide rates have skyrocketed, it is now the eleventh most common cause of death in the United States. This has only pushed me harder to try and make an impact. Cj has helped me along the way by being a positive figure and influencing me to become a better person. We were all born with a voice; it’s just a matter of how we use it. We CAN end the cycle. We CAN stop bullying. And we CAN save lives. End the cycle… be a Superhero, not a bully!

A TRUE HERO REMEMBERED
“ Rest in peace, sweet beautiful Gabe, a hero to all.” By Chuck Shuck
I can remember the day when I walked down to the kennels at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas to meet my new partner that I would be deployed with. I got to the kennel, and there looking back at me was a yellow lab, and his name was Gabe. For the next 5 months, Gabe and I would learn to trust each other, while learning our job as a Specialized Search Dog Team. 17 days after graduating, Gabe and I were on a plane for my 3rd deployment and Gabe’s first. Gabe started his community service work that same week as we got stuck in Spain for 2 weeks because we were invited to the local elementary school to talk to the kids. Gabe also showed me that he was a dog, because when I left the hotel room he ate an entire bag of chocolate chip cookies! Once in Iraq, Gabe showed he had the stamina and determination of any great soldier by massing 26 finds in his 12 months. We worked with so many awesome soldiers in Iraq and they loved Gabe as much as Gabe adored them. Being able to share Gabe with the soldiers was extra special because it brought a piece of home to them. Losing our friends was the hardest part. Gabe also had the honor of visiting wounded American troops in a Baghdad hospital. Gabe’s missions included raids, cordon and searches, traffic control points, and area searches. In May of 2008, Gabe received the American Kennel Club Heroic Military dog of the
year award in a ceremony at Ft Hood, Texas, for his hard work in Iraq. Gabe was nominated by K9 branch chief John McKinney Sr. Gabe would retire in 2009, and I was able to adopt him and give him the life he always dreamed of, especially since he was a pound puppy in Houston, Texas, prior to earning his stripes in the Army. Gabe was very involved with the community and loved teaching kids about respect, staying in school, and working hard. Gabe was selected as the 2012 American Humane Association Military hero dog of the year and then the 2012 American Hero Dog. Along with this great and honorable title of representing AHA, Gabe got to throw out the first pitch at a Dodgers game and also took part in the 2013 Rose Parade. Gabe’s highlight was meeting Betty White. Sadly, my “Pooh Bear” passed away Feb 13th this year of cancer that was not detected until it was too late. Gabe lived life to the fullest each and every day and brought such joy to me and everyone he came into contact with. He loved his snack foods and he loved his adopted rescue brother Duke, and his sister Lena. In memory of Gabe, we now work to save as many shelter pets as possible.

Nose Work
with Therapy Dogs Patchronus Charm and Bodacious By Therese Weiner
What is K9 Nose Work and how do I get involved? Those were the questions I kept hearing when I talk about it on my “Patch O’ Pits Therapy Dogs” Facebook page. So I started keeping an online training log and writing about it to encourage others to give K9 Nose Work a try. Competitive nose work/scent work is one of the activities that Bodacious and Patchronus do when we aren't out in the community on therapy dog visits. People actually stop to watch and even
48 Spring 2013 | American Dog Media
help hide scents for us. Just recently, Bodacious did several demonstrations as part of her presentation to hundreds of students at the Barnegat School District for a career day event. K9 Nose Work is one of the newest up-and-coming dog sports around. I was lucky enough to find out the place where I do agility classes also had a National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) instructor on staff. I also had the opportunity to do a great workshop with a retired state police
officer. The NACSW has a lot of great info on their website at: www.nacsw. net. There is also a new organization just starting out called the United Nose Work Association, which has a different set of rules and looks to be another promising venue for the sport. In this type of training, dogs excel because they get to use their natural hunting drive instincts. I have yet to see a dog that didn’t love doing it, and have watched many different breeds working. In K9 Nose Work, the handler and dog

work as a team. While the dog searches and does all the real work looking for the scent, the handler learns to read the dog’s body language and the alert indicators. Before a dog can compete, they must pass an ORT, which is an odor recognition test. Then they may move up to being able to trial. There are four main search areas in competition: containers, vehicles, interior, and exterior. Different dogs respond to ‘search’ and ‘alert’ in slightly different ways. It is amazing just watching the difference between the ways my two girls work. For instance, Patchronus Charm alerts more with her paws and Bodacious alerts more passively by doing a down on the scent. In different situations, the dogs may be either on or off lead for their searches. The handler must call ‘alert’ when they think their dog has found the ‘hide’ in a given amount of time and tell the judge where it is in order to successfully complete each section. I first started training with my youngest therapy dog, Patchronus Charm, in July 2012. Just two months after starting, she passed her ORT in birch, and shortly after, also passed her ORTs in anise and clove. Patchronus did her first trial in March and earned her
title, a NW1, getting a first place ribbon after finding her hide in containers in 7 seconds flat. She is now preparing to trial in NW2. Bodacious had such a full therapy dog visiting schedule over the summer that she couldn’t start training classes until the end of Oct. 2012. She then had her first ORT about 3 months later and she will be going to her first trial soon.
Forms of scent work are done in other venues such as Military and Police dogs working with bomb detection, narcotics to cadaver dogs, or dogs sniffing out bed bugs and even cancer detection. It is truly amazing to see dogs thriving and working happily using what comes so naturally to them. I hope to be involved in other aspects of it in the future.
How the dog searches depends on many factors such as, but not limited to, the air flow, temperature, weather, time of day, the duration the scent has been out, and the location of the scent (if it’s on water or land, high up or low, etc).
A family that exercises, trains, and works with their dog is so much happier. It is funny how many people will ask me how come I’m always so happy. My answer is, “Of course I’m always happy - have you met my Pit Bulls?” Dogs give us unconditional love, but can also help us stay in shape and reduce daily stress. Find what you and your dog like to do together; whether it’s nose work, therapy dog work, agility, fly ball, tracking, rally obedience, swimming, or just playing fetch and going for walks. And make sure to enjoy every minute.
Training is a total blast for handlers and the dogs, whether you do it on your own or in classes, and you should go to different locations. For example, besides our regular training facility - we’ve practiced at a fire station, elementary schools, community centers, stores, parking lots, parks, the beach, around different neighborhoods, cranberry bogs, and playgrounds. Training needs to be rewarding for both handler and dog in order to make for the best overall experience.

ARPBO Los Angeles Responsible Pit Bull Owners
By Kristi Graham
In December 2011, I adopted a 12-weekold American Staffordshire puppy from the shelter in Agoura Hills, California. My 13-year-old had died a week before, and I simply couldn’t be without a dog. This puppy had been in the shelter for 6 weeks and the note on his intake form said, “no room.” Upon getting him home, I discovered that this cute little puppy was basically feral; no socialization, no bite inhibition, and no manners. I named him Rafa. I spent a little over a month working with him, with only moderate success.
72 Spring 2013 | American Dog Media
When he wanted to listen, he would, and he learned at lightning speed. But, when he got locked in a mood, there was no coming back. Desperate, I started searching for a trainer, specifically one that could deal with a completely unsocialized puppy. What I found was Troy Smith and LARPBO. LARPBO is the acronym for, “Los Angeles Responsible Pit Bull Owners.” When I joined the group in March 2012, the classes on Saturday would consist of about 8 people. The group founder and trainer, Troy Smith, worked with
LARPBO
To promote healthy, happy, well balanced, and trained Pit Bulls. us to start training and socializing our dogs, and preparing them for the Canine Good Citizen test. Today, the group has grown to an average of 20 dogs per class with one class that topped 40. We hold low-cost ($15) classes every Saturday and Sunday in 3 different parks that lead to low-cost (currently $15) CGC testing a few times a year and have approximately 7-10 dogs that successfully get certified each class. LARPBO is a group of pit bull owners, but the non-profit organization welcomes all breeds, and at classes you will often see Rottweilers, Shepherds, a Great Dane, and even a French Bulldog or two. But, it’s not all about training. It’s also about having fun. We have pack walks, swimming and dock diving lessons, we’ve tried lure coursing, and we hope to build an agility course. We attend community events like Woofstock and the OC Pet Expo, as well as the Crescent Valley Fair where we introduce people to our dogs and show them that they aren’t what the news media so often portrays.
artists. One is a 7-year-old girl who trains her dogs like a pro and even took one of them through the Canine Good Citizen testing by herself. They are just everyday people who love their 4-legged family members. Recent events in California have stirred the words, “Breed Specific Legislation.” While California has a state law that prohibits any sort of BSL, some politicians want to get that repealed and others are trying to go around it by passing mandatory spay/neuter laws for pit bulls only (that’s still Breed Specific). The members of LARPBO are understandably worried as they work daily to show these dogs for what they are, and what they can be in the right hands. BSL is not a solution and that has been proven time and time again. That is also why many cities and states have moved away from BSL and towards dangerous dog laws. Laws that punish the owners for being negligent instead of punishing the conscientious owners.
to perpetuate with sensationalized stories and show that in the right hands these dogs are just dogs; loving, loyal, intelligent, comical friends. With this in mind, LARPBOs goal is to educate the public, train well-behaved dogs, and have some fun. We strive to help people address any problems they may have so they can keep their dogs in their homes and out of shelters. In the last year and a half, with the help of the LARPBO community, we have worked actively to be part of the solution and Rafa has grown into a beautiful and amazing dog who now has manners (mostly, he is still a puppy after all) and shares his smile, love and ears with everyone he meets. The “motto” for LARPBO is quite simple. “Speak LARPBO. Be LARPBO. Live Responsibly.” With chapters that have now started in San Bernardino and San Diego, as well as our “sister group,” Peace Love and Pit Bulls in Las Vegas, we hope to keep spreading the word. What LARPBO has become is a community of responsible dog owners who are working to help repair the reputation these dogs have. They are young and older people with active fun dogs. They are professionals and
Richard Hunter (not affiliated with LARPBO), who owns one of the Vick Dogs recently stated quite correctly, “the Pit Bulls biggest problem is that sometimes idiots get ahold of them.” LARPBO is working every day to dispel the myths, the stereotypes, and the fears that the media has managed

BEDTIME BOOKS All books reviewed by Nancy Allen
ADVENTURES WITH OLLIE by Adrian Chamberlain
This book is a "collection of vignettes" about the pug named Ollie and his adventures; from smuggling him into a 'no dogs allowed' cabin in the summer, to house training, getting dressed in numerous costumes, and trying to teach him dog tricks. "A funny, warm-hearted read that will amuse dog lovers." Funny book.
ROAD TRIP by Gary Paulsen and Jim Paulsen
This is a teenage novel, "told in alternating points of view between a teenager and his dog." The dad and son are on a road trip to pick up and adopt a rescue dog. A humorous group join up along the way, and this group of adventuresome people will make this a "laugh-out-loud story" you will not want to put down till you find out how it all turns out. Great book.
FINDING ZASHA by Randi Barrow
Finding Zasha is a gripping World War II story about the dog Zasha, and the boy who loves her so much that he is willing to risk his life to save her. The story gives you a look into, "the dark effects of war on both humans and animals." This book is for students ages 8-12, but interesting for adults also.

RABBI OTIS
20 Years Young and Still Loving Life!
By Lee Day, Celebrity Pet Entertainer and Rabbi Otis’ mom
Rabbi otis was dumped five years ago on the Long Island Expressway, and thankfully, he was picked up as a stray and rescued. It was determined that he was approximately 15-years-old at the time, and was probably discarded like trash because of his myriad of health problems. Rabbi otis was old, blind, partially deaf and doesn’t hear well, and has no teeth. Since no one wanted to adopt him at the shelter, they were going to put him to sleep, and he was placed on the euthanasia list. Luckily for Rabbi otis, my cousin adopted him! Unfortunately,
shortly after his adoption, my cousin had a stroke and could no longer care for him. Rabbi otis needed more attention and care than she could give him, so she asked me if I would take him, and that is where his life started all over again!
Rabbi otis is now 20-years-old and loves to visit with the elderly, disabled children and adults, and puts a smile on faces everywhere he goes!
I am the creator of the Bark Mitzvah, animal weddings, and the animal dating service Barktims and Catechisms. All my services are trademarked and have been copyrighted since I started the company back in 1984. Rabbi otis has become my assistant Rabbi, and what a great and loving assistant he is!

MEATBALL MCCARTY
From War Zone to Hero! By Kimberly McCarty (Meatball’s mom)
Meatball is an Afghan Kuchi dog rescued by US Military personnel serving in Afghanistan. He came to the United States in August 2012 to live with my family through the Puppy Rescue Mission. In December of 2012, I was upstairs preparing to fall asleep one night when I heard Meatball begin barking incessantly. I rushed down to the basement, where I found my husband Joe lying on the couch suffering from a Grand Mal Seizure. Meatball was perched on top of him, endlessly licking him in an attempt to bring him out of the seizure. I had to physically remove Meatball, who at the time weighed 70 pounds, so I could give Joe his medication. As Joe regained
composure, Meatball never left his side. After that, he curled up with his paw on Joe’s arm, and refused to let Joe out of his sight. This is the second time that Meatball has alerted me to a dangerous situation with Joe. Even if Joe is suffering from something as simple as a headache, Meatball notices. He is very attentive to Joe's balance issues and his everyday struggle with life and it's obstacles. Meatball came from the mean streets of Afghanistan and had no formal training, but yet he understands and reacts to Joe's medical issues just like a trained service dog. So much so, that Meatball was evaluated by PAWS Training Center in West Chester, PA,
and will soon begin training as Joe's Certified Service Assistance Dog. Joe, who served as a firefighter for the Sharon Hill Fire Department for 5 years, and previously at the Yeadon Fire Company for 12 years, has suffered four strokes and is paralyzed on his left side. He now suffers from Seizure Disorder as well. Meatball and Joe share a bond so tight that the 13-monthold dog knows when Joe isn’t right. I believe that keen awareness saved Joe’s life back in December.

T hanks to being rescued by Bella-Reed Pit Bull Rescue! By Bella-Reed Pit Bull Rescue
Celina was found lying on the side of the road in North Philadelphia by our rescue veterinarian. It was apparent that she had been hit by a car, and no one walking by was offering her any help. Some men were talking about breeding her, and others were trying to approach her with their own dogs. The vet scooped her up, and Celina was taken to the shelter at PSPCA (Pennsylvania SPCA). It was determined that Celina was lame in her left front leg, experiencing some head trauma, and suffering from road rash wounds on her left leg. X-rays confirmed a fracture. She was not wearing a collar or micro-chipped, and no one came to claim her. The vet knew Celina needed a quiet place to heal and not a shelter environment full of germs, so he contacted Bella-Reed Pit Bull Rescue (BRPBR) to see if we could assist this, “dog with a heart of gold.” Although we knew her treatment could be extensive and costly, BRPBR decided to bring Celina into our care and attempt to save her leg; through weekly trips to the vet, dressing changes, and x-rays to monitor her fracture. And one of our board members, who is an orthopedic nurse, stepped up to foster Celina.
It’s been over 6 weeks since Celina was struck by a car and her fracture has showed no improvement. BRPBR consulted with a top ranked orthopedic vet and Celina had surgery to repair her leg with plates and screws. Celina's foster mom says, “Celina is such an amazing dog, and I am sure her life before BRPBR was not full of rainbows, as she has clearly been overbred. And yet, she holds no grudges against anyone with two or four legs. Her eyes speak beyond her soul. It is so hard to think of what would happen to dogs like Celina if it weren't for rescues stepping up to manage their care. And it's hard to acknowledge there are those that don't get saved.

I have had the internal struggle of whether or not to keep Celina, as I have thought with my other fosters, and consider making her a permanent member of my family. But, that would put me at maximum capacity of pets in my house. Then I look at her face, and it tells me that there are so many more out there just like her, the forgotten outcasts, that need help and need a foster home for a little while.” And that is how we are able to keep doing what we do!

Are you looking to spend a day out with your best pet friend and other pet lovers? Would you love to check out the newest and most exciting pet products? Want to learn how to help your pet try a new hobby (like nosework or dock jumping) or talk to a top pet behaviorist about your pet’s ‘issues’? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then you definitely need to check out an Amazing Pet Expo! So what exactly is an Amazing Pet Expo? Well, for starters, it’s simply AMAZING. It's a free one-day event for the whole family, including your favorite pet buddy, which can be your pooch or your bird or even your lizard. Packed with local and nationally-recognized veterinarians, trainers, retailers and rescue groups, these shows offer something for everyone. When you attend an Amazing Pet Expo, you’re also helping pets in your community, whether it’s through adoption or activism, we’ll teach you how to make a difference. In fact, fighting against breed specific legislation (or BSL) is one of the many causes that we’re passionate about. Our national spokesperson, Shorty Rossi, star of ‘Pit Boss’ on Animal Planet, appears at most of our events with his popular canine sidekick, Hercules, to sign autographs, meet his fans and educate about BSL. On that note, our mega-adoption area is a huge part of each show. Countless rescue groups attend with a variety of animals that need homes. These rescues not only have pets available for adoption, but they also make recommendations about the best type of pet for your family’s lifestyle. Our goal isn’t just finding good homes for the pets that them; it’s getting them into the perfect forever home. Whether you’d like to learn, shop, play or adopt, this is an event you won’t want to miss! In fact, more than 220,000 pet lovers attended an Amazing Pet Expo last year. Do you REALLY want to be the one to tell your pet that they have to miss out on the biggest pet party in town? We didn't think so.
