NOTES

Happy New Year!

H

appy New Year to all! It’s hard to believe that 2017 is here. And with the new year comes planning for the upcoming driving season. I am sure that many of you are already scheduling your pleasure shows, CDEs and recreational drives on the calendar. I love the optimism that comes with a new year. Some of us get to look forward to the pending foaling season, the hope that comes for the future of every baby born to our mares. For others, it’s the mapping out of goals for the coming year in our respective driving fields. One of my goals for the upcoming year is to continue to shape the ADS publications into a format that is easy to navigate, with editorial that interests the readership and helps you further your goals in the carriage arena. I welcome your ideas for features and columns on topics that are of general interest to the membership, or specific aspects of horsemanship about which you’d like to learn more. Another major goal of mine for the ADS publications, specifically The Whip, is to continue to grow our advertising base. Both The Wheelhorse and The Whip are a member benefit, which means all members of the ADS receive both publications. What does that mean for you, as a potential advertiser? Your ad will land in the hands of your target market. Do you have horses, carriages, harness, or other carriage driving-themed merchandise to sell? Do you have new teams or partnerships for the coming year, or important wins to celebrate? We have prices to fit every pocketbook. Email me for rates and specials: abbie@americandrivingsociety.org. P.S. Tune into the February issue of The Whip for youth championship results.

appy New Year and all my very best wishes for a great year in driving to every one of my readers, as well as to the ADS membership. By the time you read this, it’s January 2017 - while now that I type it’s still the old year and the November Whip has just arrived recently in my mail box, and I’d like to compliment our new editor Abbie. Yes, sure, I’m old fashioned, there are a few changes which I still have to get used to - like the new masthead and the new format and a few other minor details, but overall, congratulations, Abbie! There are many things that I do like: First: I was not able to attend our annual meeting - but I was delighted to be able to find such a thorough report in The Whip. For as long as I have been an ADS member (about 35 years), I don’t recall ever having seen such good coverage of our annual meeting. Yes, I know, much of it can be found also on the new ADS website - which is great too - but here we also had many good pictures to go with the text. Besides, out of our about 3,000 members, how many would make the effort to read meeting minutes 1

on the website? And while I understand the turnout of members attending was great, it’s still only about 5% of all of us who were able or willing to go there. So for the other 95% of our members, I think this coverage is not only very important but hopefully also equally welcome. The articles covering our events are what we are used to - even though Abbie gives them a lot more room. That was especially nice to do for our ADS Preliminary Championship. Then she added the two feature articles about the New York City Central Park carriage horses as well as stagecoaches, both covering the lives of real working horses. Having grown up with working draft horses, they are close to my heart. I knew of both subjects, including the political controversy around the NYC carriage horses, but I still enjoyed reading both features. Read it, if you didn’t have a chance to do so yet. It’s GREAT reading, especially the parts about the stagecoach drivers! Together with Abbie, I hope it might have interested also many of our other ADS members. I think we have a great team now at work for us, with Louise getting settled in and going, and Stacy still holding the office together through some hard times before Louise and Abbie came aboard - and now also with the personal loss of her dear

father (Thank you to all who shared your warm thoughts on Stacy’s Facebook page.). Finally, I am especially happy to note from my end, as standing on the sidelines - from between my blinders - Abbie is making good strides into getting more advertisements into The Whip something that unfortunately had been slacked off over the last few years, and something that really is needed in order to pay for The Whip and for the continuous operation of the ADS. So, you probably have seen the annual appeal in The Whip and in the meantime perhaps also by mail and maybe even by e-mail and telephone. I hope you were as generous as you could afford. But for the ads in The Whip, it’s not a once a year deal. We have some great personal ads in it too, for personal accomplishments, for thoughts about a great horse etc. So, if you can help with anything in that respect, please keep an ad in The Whip in mind. I’ll look forward to seeing your ad, not only for the contents of the ad, but also for knowing that it helps The Whip and the ADS, and with that all of us and one of the organizations that keeps alive the sport we all love. Thank you and again, Happy New Year.

Annual Appeal

Dear ADS Members, In the next week to ten days you will receive a letter from me. The letter will ask you to participate in the 2016 ADS Annual Appeal, a fund raising campaign that is essential to the mission, health and growth of the ADS. As your President, on behalf of the Board of Directors and all the many volunteer committees that do the work of our organization, we want to emphasize how important it is for you to respond. The ADS is changing, increasing our ability to reach out to you, growing the number of competitions, promoting clinics and

club activities and investing in the future with an investment fund that provides income from equities to supplement what you give. Our theme this year is member benefits and how we wish to grow them, please realize that the membership fee you pay each year does not cover the services the ADS provides. It certainly does not cover all we wish to provide! So when the letter comes, please consider a gift, a gift whose use you can designate. Support the ADS as we support you, your club and your sport. Sincerely, Mike Arnold, President
