DISCOVER YOUR WHY.

PROGRAMS & PROJECTS

2019-2021

WELCOME TO DISCOVERING YOUR WHY. Some of the most recognized and respected corporations in the world are making a difference for the planet — and building goodwill with their customers and stakeholders — by partnering with American Forests to plant trees in urban and rural areas, expand wildlife habitat, restore forest ecosystems and address climate change. The groups that partner with American Forests range from the financial industry to energy to retail. Our corporate partners are multi-milliondollar companies, small, family-run businesses, and everything in between. For more than a century, businesses have supported the work of American Forests. We partner with companies to offer special opportunities in cause-related marketing, community impact efforts, and employee volunteer events. In a world in which global environmental challenges and a changing climate impact everything from our economy to the quality of our lives, American Forests offers pragmatic strategies and tangible ecological solutions that make a difference and provide greater good for all.

JAD DALEY President and CEO, American Forests

LET’S REFOREST AMERICA TOGETHER.

“THESE ARE THE PROJECTS THAT MATTER, THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE FUTURE.”

WHAT’S INSIDE American Forests has planted over 60 million trees in the last 30 years, and this year we plan to plant an additional 3.5 million trees. Through our American ReLeaf program, we are investing in new landscape-scale restoration to transform eight native forest ecosystems across America. Our Priority Landscapes are natural systems like mountain ranges and watersheds that deliver a full suite of benefits to water, climate action, people and wildlife. These landscapes have been identified in order to target our actions to the most important yet threatened of America’s native forests. In each landscape, we employ a new change model linking partnership, science-based planning, policy advocacy, tree planting, and other forest restoration and issue-based communications. Additionally, American Forests is committed to building vibrant cities through urban forests and green space through our Community ReLeaf programs. From ensuring equitable distribution of tree canopy to creating much-needed tree care industry jobs, we are working with our diverse group of partners to help bring equity to communities across the U.S. to ensure all people in cities and towns receive the benefits that trees provide. This booklet was created to showcase American Forests’ new and ongoing projects in 2019. And some of these programs need your help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More wood comes out of urban forests than our national forests, but much of it is sent to the landfill where its carbon is released into the atmosphere. In partnership with the Baltimore wood project, American Forests is helping to develop an urban wood economy using downed trees. We have purchased a sawmill for the city of Baltimore, restored vacant land using reclaimed wood and planting trees in the community, and are working with carver vocational tech high school students to develop wood products from the city’s vast supply of downed trees. Additional support would allow us to provide more equipment and career opportunities for the students and expand the market for urban wood utilization. ACTIONS Develop an Urban Wood Market.
