Director with 74 votes, Robert Eicher as a three-year At-Large Director with 70 votes, and Joey Lysinger as a three-year At-Large Director with 51 votes. Because the Board received Kyle Love’s resignation following the ballot preparation, Doug Hoskins and Erwin Slabaugh were appointed for one-year terms as AtLarge Directors having each received 49 votes. Expanding the Board by an additional seat is in line with Article IV Section 5 of the By-Laws. Further, precedent was set when a regional seat tied allowing for both to serve for one year. We look forward to serving the membership in 2022!
Let’s Meet Your Newest Directors Eastern Region: Brian R. Mitteer
Election Results The AHR Board of Directors extends a heartfelt thanks for member patience as we navigated yet another obstacle. Despite the typical return percentage, a few members expressed concern that their ballot was not received or would not have had time to reply. Taking this into consideration along with the actual votes cast, the Board is pleased to welcome: Brian Mitteer for a three-year term as Eastern Region Director, Tara Williamson for the remaining one year term as East Central Region Director, Glenn Yoder as a three-year At-Large

I have been active with the American Haflinger Registry since purchasing my first Haflinger in 2005. I have been active showing Haflingers since 2007. I purchased Bonita Rox PA in 2007 and showed her at the 2008 AHR National Show where she was Grand Champion Mare and Best of Show. To date, she is the all-time point leader for driving. She also was the high point performance horse at the 2010 and 2012 National Shows. In 2011, Craig Sweeting showed our bred horse Syndee New of Showme in the AHR National Show where she was Grand Champion Mare and Best of Show. In 2014, Syndee repeated as Best of Show at the AHR National Show.
Page 2
Bits & Pieces from AHR I have been active at the state and National level. I served as both Treasurer and President of the New York Registered Haflinger Association. I served as Chairman of the National Futurity in 2008. I was elected as at-large Director of the AHR and late Director from the Northeast Region. During my six years on the Board, I served as Treasurer for 2 years and President for 4 years. I have a strong business background with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University and a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration. I taught Farm Management at the State University of New York at Delhi. I served 29 years as a Hospital CEO in hospitals in NY, VT, and MI. My last hospital was a $125 million business. I also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of CFCU Community Credit Union which is one of the largest in New York with over a $1 billion in assets. I would like to once again serve as a Director of YOUR organization. It is extremely important to involve members in the AHR by being totally transparent in communications and actions. A wellinformed organization can prosper. I strongly believe in the member driven Bylaws and believe that they should always be followed. A Board cannot unilaterally decide to not follow the Bylaws or wishes of the membership. Information such as financials should regularly be shared with members. While times are tight, there is no reason to not be forthcoming with members. Decisions must be made for the benefit of all members not just a select few.
Haflinger Horse Bits | December 2021
East Central Region: Tara Williamson I began my Haflinger journey about a decade ago. What began with catchriding a few nice horses soon became owning, showing, training and eventually breeding registered Haflingers. I continue to compete and perform in many arenas with these amazing horses, and strive to spread knowledge and appreciation of the breed. I enjoy many activities with my horses and those that I train. We are often in the show ring competing in dressage, western dressage, western pleasure, trail, jumping, halter and pleasure driving. We are also fixtures on the local trails, enjoying nature. My horses also spend time working up my arena and garden ground. I believe that the strength of this breed is in the versatility, and I love to make use of all of that versatility! I have a long work history that lends itself well to contributing to a board such as this. From working on my own farm with horses, to managing the therapy horse herd at my current job, to serving as President of the OHA and teaching new riders the love of horses as an instructor, my life is full of horses. I enjoy sharing and encouraging interest in horses and more specifically Haflingers. And isn’t that what we want from our registry? Promotion and enthusiasm. My thoughts for the future of the AHR range from very simple to more ambitious. I believe we need to restore that which we have lost. Accountability- fi-

Bits & Pieces from AHR nancial records fairly and accurately provided. Non-profit status reinstated. Membership informed and respected as what they are- the owners of this registry. More ambitiously, I hope to create more support and opportunities for our breed. I hope to find ways to build value into a registry membership. I want to find ways to help people build businesses and livelihoods through our breed and therefore expand the demand for our horses. Only through growth will we survive.
1992. This business has now been successfully transitioned to our two oldest sons. We have owned and operated our farm, DER HAFLINGERHOF, since 1996. With the assistance of our very capable sales manager, Susan Van Horn, we have sold horses to 3 countries and 33 states. As for our history with AHR, I served on the original bylaw committee that composed AHR's first set of bylaws.I have also been active on AHR committees, including being chairperson of the Futurity and Classification committees.
At-Large: Robert Eicher We bought our first Haflinger in 1994. We became members of both registries CHA shortly afterward. We have been continuous members of AHR ever since the registry was started. Other haflinger groups that we have supported and been members of are; OHA, HBO and HOPE. We are also founding members of the Haflinger Breeders Co-op (HBC ) and the American Haflinger Alliance (AHA). We have been involved in breeding and promoting Haflingers since 1994. I am an AHR C-Carded Judge and have judged at the Buckeye and Central Ohio Shows. We use our horses in many different disciplines, trail riding, pleasure driving, farm work.... Etc. We focus on breeding for versatility, athleticism and temperament. Horses from our farm have been successful in, Combined Driving Events, Jumping, Eventing, Dressage, Draft Hitches, Pleasure riding and Driving. Our business experience, We founded and operated our family business of building custom Kitchen Cabinetry since Haflinger Horse Bits | December 2021
My goal as an AHR Director, to return the Registry to a more member friendly - member guided organization as was the original intent. I would like to see the annual membership meeting returned to combining with a Haflinger event or sale to maximize member participation. I have a specific interest in finding a way to effectively reach out and communicate with Haflinger owners that are not active on the internet and/or social media. We could grow the AHR membership dramatically if we found an effective way to indude this segment of our membership in our communications. We have the most versatile breed of horse in the world. The Haflinger excels in more disciplines than any other equine breed! We need to promote this to the equine world! In summary, as your AHR Director, I would work toward more open communication, more member input and more effective promotion of our Haflinger Breed.
Page 4
Bits & Pieces from AHR At Large: Doug Hoskins I became involved with Haflingers in 1982 since then I have been a continuous member of the Registry beginning with Haflinger Association of America then Haflinger Registry of North America and now American Haflinger Registry. I have seen many changes over the years, some good and some not so good. My interest has always been and continues today to be the support and promotion of the Haflinger horse. My experience with Haflingers is very varied not only am I a breeder and a trainer I have used Haflingers primarily for pleasure, but my horses have performed many tasks which only speaks to the versatility of this great breed, which is one of attributes that attracted me to the Haflinger initially. I have used my horses for pleasure driving from single to six horse hitches they have worked in a variety of parades, trail rides, and farm work used to rake hay and haul manure these horses have many hours trail riding in the mountains and have been used to work cattle as well as endless hours on hunting trips even Racoon hunting at night and all have performed beautifully.
the mining was completed, I have been self-employed owning and managing a three hundred head commercial beef cow/calf operation. Also, I am a licensed realtor in both Kentucky and Tennessee. And currently I work as Coordinator for the county solid waste and recycling program with an annual budget of one and half million dollars.
As Director I would like to see the Registry more member involved with improved communication after all this is a member owned organization and I think communication is vital. Financial records should be audited regularly, and the results made available to the members. Members should feel comfortable that by laws as well as state and federal laws as required by 501c(5) are complied with and adhered too. Those records should be properly maintained and made readily available I am old school and plan talk is easily understood I also believe there is no right way to do the wrong thing we represent a great breed of horse our work and object should always be about the promotion of the breed.
My past work experience and my strong suit is a background in mine management having spent twenty years involved in managing the largest surface mining operation in Southeastern Kentucky supervising five hundred employees with an annual production of two and half million tons of coal. As mine manger I was responsible for daily operations budgeting and long term mine planning and customer relations. After Haflinger Horse Bits | December 2021

Meet Your 2021 Youth Scholarship Winner! Hello, my name is Johnathan Woodward and I am 15 years old and will be a sophomore at Ridgewood High School. I have been involved with Haflingers ever since I was born! Our family owns and operates Woodward Performance Haflingers in Coshocton, Ohio. We started in the draft Haflingers showing and later transferred over to the pleasure competitions. I have always shown and been involved with the Ohio Haflinger Association and the Haflinger shows. I enjoy riding western and the contest games. I help run several horse shows with my parents throughout the year, and enjoy the set up and tear down portions of the show. I had my own gelding, Wiz Bang LMP when I was little, who taught me about showing and competing. I sold him when I was 12 and I now ride Aftershock MJW, a gelding our family bred and raised. My grandfather, Dean Woodward, gave me a mare, Laney HFB, whom I have bred several times. She is due in 2021 at 19 years old and I am excited for her foal by Standard Of Excellence TOF. Now that I am older, I am active on our family farm with all aspects regarding the horses. From emptying the manure spreader, to mowing, tedding, baling and stacking hay, to mowing pastures and filling water tanks, I enjoy the physical labor a farm requires. This year, I am working at several places, and my parents allow me to stay home while they attend the shows, and I take care of the horses and animals left at the farm and clients that come while they are away. Page 6
Bits & Pieces from AHR In school I am active in my local Ridegewood FFA chapter. Last year, I was the FFA Reporter, and for 2021-2022 I am the Vice President. I am on many CDE (Career Development Events) such as job interview, forestry, poultry judging, equine judging, trap shooting, and soils. For my awards last year I was first in the district in Job Interview and 6th in the state for individual. I received my FFA Letter as a Freshman as well as Greenhand Award and was named Outstanding Greenhand Award. I was also named Outstanding FFA member, and Top 5 in our chapter for Career Development Events. Our Ag sales team we were 6th in the district. Our Green hand Quiz we were 4th in the district. State poultry Judging I was 50th in the state overall.
the grants to help secure the funds for this project. I enjoy helping at the poultry clinics and bringing my birds to local schools and events to help educate people on heritage turkeys. My goals for the future include enlisting in the United State Navy where I wish to serve on a nuclear submarine. I will work on my college goals at the time to receive a degree in poultry science either at the University of Arkansas, University of Idaho, or The Ohio State University. When my service is complete, I wish to start my own commercial turkey operation. The AHRY will award Johnathan $1,000 during his freshman year of college with an additional $1,000 from the AHR. Congratulations, Johnathan!
I am also active in 4-H and serve as the Treasurer for our club, Raising Champions. I enjoy raising and show ing heritage breed Narragansett Turkeys as well as Broad Breasted White turkeys and I show them locally as well as nationally. In 2019 I was awarded the Ohio State Fair Grand Champion Market Turkey, as well as Outstanding Market Exhibitor 14 year old. My birds also were named Grand Champion Breeding Turkey and Reserve Grand Champion Breeding Turkey the same year. In 4-H I also participate in Shooting Sports, Archery as well as Trap Shooting, and am a member of the Junior Fair board, and Junior Leadership club. I am passionate about our poultry program in the county and have worked hard to implement a larger area for the poultry barns, including new pens for turkeys, geese, ducks and chickens. I have helped tear down the old pens, construct, paint, and work on Haflinger Horse Bits | December 2021
