Dancin In Aruba HOF
By Rachel M. Jelen Western & Classical Dressage I began riding “Ruby” in 2013 when she was green broke. I showed her in her first dressage schooling show after about 2 months. We did Intro A & B, which is only walk trot but she did really well scoring in the high 60s.
Dressage Levels 2 & 3 and she did just as well as she does in Classical. So here we are 2021 and we are showing Dressage at Recognized and Schooling Shows in Classical and Western Dressage. She is a spectator favorite, always drawing attention! I absolutely love riding her and am truly blessed to be her trainer.
The next year we moved up to training level where we qualified and placed 3rd in a local dressage clubs Championship show with scores in the 60s. Slowly we progressed (with a few setbacks) and eventually received my Second Level scores for my USDF Bronze Medal. In late 2017 she was hit with White Line Disease for the first time and we battled it for almost 3 years. While recovering from the last bout in early 2020, we attempted the Western Haflinger Horse Bits | July 2021

Western States Horse Expo the breed and educate the public about Haflingers: driving, jumping, dressage, western pleasure, tricks, trail obstacles as well as inhand walking to show breed conformation. The daily 30 minutes demo allowed a history introduction of the breed, an individual presentation of each horse as well as answering questions from the public. This was by far one of the most popular displays during Horse Expo. By Anne-Laure Boyd Western States Horse Expo took place in Northern California on June 1113, 2021. The venue was the beautiful Rancho Murrieta Equestrian Center near Sacramento; a state-of-the-art facility with multiple arenas, a cross country course, beautiful barns and large stalls. This was the biggest display of Haflingers at Western States Horse Expo with 13 horses. All horses were registered and varied in age from one to 30, heights, confirmation and lineage with all lineages present. The horses were in the breed barn for the public to see up close and performed daily in a very large outdoor arena. Various disciplines were displayed to promote Haflinger Horse Bits | July 2021
The horses and their owners arrived Thursday to settle and get familiar with the grounds. Some travelled as far as five hours to join the event. Aside from our daily demo, the horses also performed in other various activities. Some clinicians such as worldfamous Monty Roberts and Swedish dressage trainer Erika Jensen took a liking to the Haflingers and had them perform in their Page 7
Western States Horse Expo (continued) clinics. Some horses signed up for trail obstacle competition and took lots of ribbons home including a first place one day. The event was sponsored by the American Haflinger Registry as well as the Western Haflinger Association. We had a beautifully decorated booth with large banners, many pictures, informational handouts and gorgeous ribbons on all our stalls. We had many visitors throughout the event with many people inquiring where and how to get a Haflinger on the West Coast. This wonderful breed is in high demand amongst all age groups and disciplines.
