HONOR EES K. KEVIN SAREMI, MBA ’83
American International College Board of Trustee Member K. Kevin Saremi, MBA ’83, is the co-founder and partner of the real estate firm Saremi, LLP with his wife Debbie Saremi as well as Future Health, a health and wellness educational company where he serves as president. He is also the founder and past CEO of Consolidated Health Plans (CHP), Springfield, MA. In his current role with the American International College Board of Trustees, Saremi chairs the Institutional Advancement trustee committee. Earning his Master of Business Administration degree from American International College in 1983, Saremi has long been a staunch supporter of higher education initiatives. Under his Health E Fund, colleges and universities are able to apply for grant dollars which may be utilized to improve health and wellness on campus. In particular, the fund recognizes applicants with fresh new programs that specifically and directly improve student health, wellness, and safety. Institutions of higher education have realized hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Health E Fund, which has provided the financial means to put students first across the nation by offering and supporting mental health education seminars, crisis hotlines, health fairs, safety call box installations, exercise and weight loss programs, defibrillators and other safety equipment. With more than 30 years in the insurance industry, Saremi has held various positions at Palmer Goodell Insurance, Paul Revere Insurance Companies, and Monarch Capital, with responsibilities ranging from general manager and chief financial officer, to accounting operations, investment accounting and financial forecasting, sales, marketing and product development. Saremi is a past board member of The Employer’s Association of New England, Holyoke Boys and Girls Club, Young Presidents Organization, and the Unitarian Universalist Society of Greater Springfield.
THE HONORABLE DOMENIC J. SARNO
City of Springfield, Massachusetts, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, has earned a reputation for his commitment to economic development, financial stewardship and community-based programs to address quality-of-life issues, education and public safety. Under Sarno’s able leadership, Springfield celebrated the 375th anniversary of its founding. Now in his fourth term, Sarno was first elected mayor in 2007, and won reelection in 2009, 2011 and 2015. He is the first mayor in the city’s history to be elected to a fouryear term. During his time in office, Sarno has shepherded Springfield through financial challenges and natural disasters. Sarno works daily to improve the future of Springfield’s youth by creating a permanent culture of educational excellence for each Springfield public school student. His leadership has inspired businesses and residents of Springfield to look to a brighter future through redevelopment and renewal projects. Sarno’s personal motto of treating everyone equally and with dignity has led him to be known as the people’s mayor. A native son, Sarno is a graduate of Westfield State College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology. He also attended American International College where he majored in political science. Sarno is a former four-term city councilor and served as city council president and as a member of the Springfield Finance Control Board. He also helmed the South End Community Center as executive director. Sarno is a past recipient of the Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts Serviam Award and received the Man of the Year Award from Springfield’s Unico.
ACA DEMIC A PPA R EL Today’s ceremony begins with the Parade of Nations to announce the Academic Procession. The faculty marshals lead the students and the faculty into the arena. The Chief Marshal carries the American International College Mace and leads the stage party procession. Immediately following the chief marshal are the President of the College, the chairman of the Board of Trustees, college vice presidents, members of the Board of Trustees and academic deans. The mace was first used as a weapon in medieval Europe, but by the sixteenth century it was recognized as a symbol of authority and used in ceremonies by colleges and universities. The College Mace was designed and crafted by former Dean D. Irving Conrad. All members of the procession are dressed in academic regalia or costume. This costume dates back to medieval England of the ninth and tenth centuries. At that time, Oxford University and (later) Cambridge University were the seats of learning, and were closely associated with the church as well as royalty. All of these factors influenced the dress of the faculty and students. Although the regalia was originally conservative, as befitted the cleric, the costume gradually evolved into elaborate vestments that identified degrees. Different styles of hoods, mortars (hats), and cassock-like gowns indicate the schools’ disciplines and level of academic achievement of the wearer. Academic costumes found their way to America as early as the 1700s. However, no uniform code was even discussed until 1895 – 10 years after the founding of American International College. Despite some minor changes, the academic costume has remained very close to the original design of a thousand years ago. The code has three main parts; it deals with caps, gowns, and hoods. Of these, the caps are the simplest. Although there is an exception whereby the soft cap is worn, the mortar board of Oxford type cap is generally used by students, faculty, and administration. The color of the gown is commonly black, aside from certain variations, and both types may be seen in today’s procession. Traditionally, the hood will identify the college the wearer attended and the degree earned. However, at the doctoral level, the degree and discipline are an integral part of the gown itself. In some institutions, the traditional hood is abandoned completely at the doctoral level, and the information it would ordinarily carry is incorporated into the gown color and style. The color code for the hoods is the same for all degree levels, although the bindings or edgings of the hood may vary in width – two inches, three inches, and five inches, for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees respectively. Similarly, the hoods may vary in length – for example, a golden yellow velvet binding, five inches in width, bound to a black 36-inch hood, and lined with satin colors displays a Doctor of Science, with the satin lining indicating the colors of the particular college or university that awarded the degree.
The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and hangs closed. The hood is optional, although if worn, it should conform strictly to the color and design code. The master’s degree is indicated by an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the base hanging and square-cut. The gown may be worn open or closed, according to design, and the hood is 30 inches, without side panels, and bound with three-inch velvet. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front with black velvet, with three bars of the same across the sleeves, and may be worn open or closed. In most instances, the doctor wears a gold tassel on his or her cap, while all others wear black tassels. Tassels for caps of all degrees may be black or they may conform to the color code, except that for the doctor’s degree, gold is worn most often. Members of the governing body of a college or university are entitled to wear doctor’s gowns (with black velvet), even if they have not achieved the doctoral degree, but their hoods may be only those of degrees actually held by the wearers and especially designed by the institution where they serve as members of the board. The chief officer and the chief marshal may wear specifically designed costumes, as approved by the institution.
