MEMBERSHIP Nearly 300 APG members attended the annual July Membership Luncheon, held on July 26 in Visalia, California. Executive Director Richard Matoian provided an industry update and spoke about APG’s successful efforts in eliminating barriers to trade in prioritized markets.

Then a panel of water experts, including CEO Jason Phillips of Friant Water Authority and Ryan Jacobsen from the Fresno County Farm Bureau, discussed the San Joaquin Water Blue Print and shared tips on how to secure water for the future. The panel was led by Don Wright of Water Writes.

MAY HELP REDUCE DAMAGE TO DNA

In a study with 49 prediabetic participants, researchers at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Reus, Spain, Institute of Health Pere Virgili, CIBER, found that by adding two ounces of pistachios into a daily snacking routine DNA damage decreased and telomere-related genes increased. ABOUT TELOMERES Telomeres, the protective caps on chromosomes, allow cells to divide without losing genes. Cell division is necessary for growing new skin, blood, bone, and other cells. Without telomeres, chromosome ends could fuse together and corrupt the cell's genetic blueprint, possibly causing malfunction, cancer, or cell death.

Mónica Bulló Bonet, one of the study’s researchers, said,

" In a previous study we demonstrated a beneficial effect of pistachio consumption on glucose and insulin metabolism. Now, we extend our results to the prevention of oxidative damage to the DNA."

AWARDED OVER

$3.8 MILLION IN MARKETING AND RESEARCH GRANT FUNDING

APG secured more than $3.8 million in funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expand international trade in overseas markets, confront unjustified trade retaliation, and enhance research on the healthful attributes of American-grown pistachios. The funds were awarded from a combination of USDA agencies that include the Market Access Program (MAP), the Agricultural Trade Promotion (ATP) and the Specialty Crop Block Grant funding.


New analysis of export markets shows nearly $3 BILLION post-tariff shipment increase resulting from U.S. pistachio industry’s generic advocacy and marketing programs. APG’s efforts to reduce or eliminate trade barriers in several key export markets (Mexico, China, Hong Kong, and the European Union) have been a significant boon to pistachio exports and to growers’ bottom line. Addressing the impact of tariffs, Dr. Dennis H. Tootelian, emeritus professor of marketing, conducted a study titled, “An Analysis of the Effects of the American Pistachio Growers’ Program to Reduce/Eliminate Tariffs on U.S. Pistachios.” Many of his analyses centered on the period from 2009 through 2017, the period in which tariffs were reduced in all four geographic areas. His study showed that after the tariffs were reduced or eliminated for each export market, the demand for pistachios was more than 2.3 billion pounds greater than expected, had the tariffs remained in place. Tootelian said, “To see this kind of an increase in shipments on a before-and-after basis with the tariffs did surprise me. What the data tells me is that there is latent demand for U.S. pistachios. If you take the price fluctuations in China and Hong Kong out, the increase in value of pistachio shipments amounts to nearly $355 million more dollars per year—nearly $4.5 billion in total—from the time tariffs were in effect to after they were reduced or eliminated.” Read more...

Underlying Tootelian’s analysis is the fact that price is not the sole determinant of the volume of U.S. pistachio exports. He sited three other factors:

the reputation of U.S. pistachios, which carries a very positive market image with consumers and importers

the quality of American pistachios being better or more consistent (or both) than pistachios from other countries

3

the investment APG has made in raising consumer awareness of pistachios’ healthful attributes

This summer APG held “Crunch Time" events in New York City and Milan, Italy, where the benefits of snacking on pistachios for office workers were discussed. Seventy journalists and social media influencers attended the events.

June 21, 2019 APG nutrition expert in Italy, Martina Donegani, spoke about three studies that showed pistachios to be an ideal midmorning or midafternoon snack. According to Donegani, “Pistachios' unique nutrient package not only promotes feelings of fullness and satiation but, according to more recent studies, also promotes optimal mental state and more focus at work.”
