Miss California 2018 MacKenzie Freed Miss California 2018, MacKenzie Freed, was crowned on June 30, 2018 in Fresno. A former Miss Treasure Island, Mackenzie’s talent is vocal; her platform is “From Scholarship to Success: Advocating for Women in the Workplace.” Mackenzie graduated summa cum laude from California Baptist University, in Riverside, California, and was raised in Lodi, California.

Miss Arizona 2018 Isabel Ticlo Miss Arizona 2018, Isabel Ticlo’s is a summa cum laude graduate of Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. Her talent is Bollywood Dance – Jhoom Barabar; her platform is “Supporting Those with Vision Impairment.”


APG SPONSORS STATEWIDE BROADCAST OF MISS CALIFORNIA PAGEANT Once again, APG helped sponsor the statewide broadcast of the Miss California pageant held in Fresno on June 30. Through the sponsorship, APG showcased our brand to the Central Valley and across California. Throughout the 3-hour show, 15 commercials and spots aired that featured APG. One spot featured our growers, the Lowder family, in their orchard with Miss California 2017 Jillian Smith. This segment aired during the show as well as on local newscasts the week of the pageant. Our sponsorship also gave us the opportunity to once again broadcast our “Power of Pistachios” campaign, using our social media videos for commercial spots during the show. The June 30 broadcast aired on television stations throughout California including San Francisco, San Diego, Bakersfield, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach and Palm Springs, from 8 to 11 pm — resulting in more than 1 million consumers viewing our message.

Dr. Mike Roussell's tip of the day: Vary your workout, get outdoors, and fuel up with pistachios.

APG and Dr. Mike Roussell teamed up for a social media promotion to celebrate Men’s Health Month, which began June 11 and ended June 17 on Father’s Day. APG posted a daily health tip related to pistachios and men’s health. The posts targeted runners, cyclists, and, of course, Father’s Day. Messages covered how healthy and tasty pistachios can refuel the body after workouts, and how they contain nutrients that can help with erectile function as well as heart and prostate health issues. Dr. Roussell joined in with a series of short videos covering pistachios and heart health, diabetes, antioxidants and brain power. The promotion reached nearly 62,000 consumers.

APG helped to sponsor the U.S. Dried Fruits & Tree Nuts Cooking Event held at the Miele Experience Center, in Vianen, Netherlands, on July 2. Forty-one Dutch food bloggers and writers attended the event, which included a presentation about the growing and handling of American agricultural products, and a cooking workshop, where each of the participants prepared nutritious and delicious dishes using American-grown pistachios, dried plums, dried cranberries, walnuts and almonds. Celebrity chef, Hidde de Brabander, famous for his Dutch pastries and desserts, spoke about the health and nutritional benefits of each of the products. He then presented two of his recipes for the group to prepare, using the products.


SEÑ CONFERENCE IN SPAIN

APG exhibited at the Spanish Nutrition Association (SEÑ) Conference in Spain, June 27-29, 2018. The health and nutritional benefits of pistachios for brain power, weight management and gestational diabetes were discussed. Booth visitors also received sample packs of American pistachios.

APG SAMPLING EVENTS IN SPAIN Nearly 1,400 runners refueled on American pistachios at running events across Spain with 100-calorie sample packs of American pistachios that were included in the races’ goody bags.


JOURNALIST EVENT AND NUTRITION SEMINAR IN CHINA

In Chengdu, APG held a media event with nutrition expert Yang Yongtao to raise awareness of the nutritional benefits of American pistachios as a post-exercise snack for active lifestyles. Over 20 journalists from health and fitness publications attended the event.

Then on June 30, APG teamed with up with Dr. Wang Jian, the associate professor of the Chongqing Nutrition Committee, for a nutrition seminar in Chongqing. Dr. Jian addressed how pistachios can help mothers-to-be, with gestational diabetes, control their blood sugar.


LeadOn Class Visits the California Capitol

On June 28, APG’s LeadOn class took a field trip to Sacramento to see the California State Capitol and learn how the policies that impacted the pistachio industry are created and implemented. The trip was a follow-up to the May LeadOn seminar, where the class was introduced to APG’s involvement in government relations. AMERICAN PISTACHIOS SEE ANOTHER RISE IN CHINA TARIFFS

On July 6, the Peoples Republic of China implemented a new round of tariffs on products imported from the United States, including an increase in tariffs on American pistachios. Earlier this year, American pistachios saw tariff rates rise from 5 to 20 percent. This second round of tariffs increases the amount by 25 percent for a total of 45 percent on raw in-shell and shelled pistachios. Roasted pistachios in sealed containers and in bulk saw their tariff rate decrease from 13 to 5 percent and 10 to 5 percent, respectively. The additional 25 percent tariff imposed by China on a number of goods, including tree nuts, went into effect on July 6. As a result, President Trump has proposed additional tariffs on various Chinese products. The United States Trade Representative’s office (USTR) is receiving written comments on these newly proposed tariffs until August 17, 2018. These proposed tariffs will not go into effect on Chinese products before August 30, 2018. American Pistachio Growers supports an end to the tariff issue between the United States and China and urges both countries to come together and work out an amicable solution that will allow trade to continue and both economies to prosper. China is an important export destination for American-grown pistachios, and the lack of resolution of this issue could hurt both American growers and Chinese consumers alike. American Pistachio Growers appreciates all the business we have with our Chinese buyers and consumers and looks forward to this continued relationship into the future.
