Pistachio Pop Quiz In celebration of our pistachio harvest, APG is challenging pistachio fans around the world to test their pistachio knowledge and take our trivia quiz. For five weeks, starting in September, short quizzes will be posted several days a week and will include questions such as: How many years does it take for pistachios to produce their first crop? Are pistachio trees pollinated by wind, butterflies, bees or osmosis? The quizzes are posted on Facebook and Twitter, with the answers appearing on the harvest page of our websites. Read more ‌

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Food Nutrition Conference & Expo

(FNCE) 2016

At this year’s FNCE, our new campaign, “Go Ahead. Call me a Health Nut,” was the theme of the APG booth. Our ambassador, Cheryl Forberg, RD, who is the chef and nutritionist for NBC’s hit show The Biggest Loser, along with Sarah Galicki, RD, who lost 120 pounds, shared share their nutritional expertise and real-life experiences about getting healthy and fit while including pistachios as part of a healthy diet and exercise program. Over 9,000 nutritionists attended FNCE 2016. Booth visitors received sample packs of pistachios, facts about pistachios’ many nutritional benefits, and information about our upcoming Health Nut Contest. The first 100 to visit the APG booth on each day of the show received Cheryl Forberg’s autographed book, A Small Guide to Losing Big. Over 649 nutritionists signed up for our nutrition e-newsletter, “American Pistachio Unshelled.”

Salone del Gusto

SLOW FOOD EVENT APG participated in the International Salone del Gusto Slow Food Event on September 22-26, in Italy, with an exhibit and a sponsored luncheon, featuring Italy’s popular food blogger, Monica Papagna, “the queen of the cookies.” During the luncheon, Papgna presented a cookie recipe with American pistachios. From our booth, APG distributed sample packs and informative literature about the culinary versatility and nutritional benefits of pistachios.

Salone del Gusto is one of Italy’s key international events dedicated to food and gastronomy. Over 600,000 consumers attended the 5-day event, which included more than 1,000 exhibitors, over 7,000 representatives from 143 countries, and over 300 Slow Food Presidia.

PISTACHIO PRODUCTION October Pistachio Task List By Robert Beede, U.C. Farm Advisor, Emeritus Harvest Wrap Up: By the time you read this, another hectic harvest will be in the bag, and you are now pouring over your grade sheets to assess the outcome of all your hard work. The word on the street is that at least 800 million pounds were brought to processors this season. Early harvested nuts had navel orangeworm levels at one percent or less, and then it steadily rose, just like we have told you for decades, to reach an average of 2.6 percent on September 26. One factor that may have contributed to the NOW problem is malfunctioning pheromone-confusion dispensers. Apparently, changes in the propellant resulted in varnishing of the nozzle and reduced pheromone emission. This is not the case with all dispensers in all orchards, so please do not make this statement the universal reason for your insect damage. It is, however, something you should investigate if mating disruption was not as effective this year. I still believe mating disruption is our future, just like winter sanitation is the cornerstone for a sound NOW management program.
