LIFE. OUT LOUD.

LIFE. OUT LOUD. Last season, we began a movement with WE THE PEOPLE, our season theme reflecting American Stage’s commitment to embrace the opportunity to engage with one another through the sharing of compelling stories. In 2018-19, we continue to build our WE THE PEOPLE community with powerful, bold live theatre. This season, we are coming together to experience LIFE. OUT LOUD. Novelist Émile Zola proclaimed, "If you ask me what I came into this life

live out loud." The Urban Dictionary describes living out loud as "Living on purpose, living passionately for your values. Letting others see your light shine, and not being afraid to be different." to do, I will tell you: I came to

At American Stage, we are committed to telling stories that impact our hearts and minds, honor our diversity, embrace our differences, and rejoice in our shared experience of what it is to be human. Our season theme, LIFE. OUT LOUD. reflects our passion for Powerful Stories, Boldly Told and our commitment to promote connection and unity in our community through the sharing of a diversity of perspectives and experiences.

In our six-play mainstage season, we’ll go on an exhilarating journey that includes: two Pulitzer Prize winners — one an American theatre classic, the other, a contemporary American theatre Broadway hit; plus, a bright and romantic reimagining of a literary classic, two hot new plays from exciting emerging voices — one a 2018 Obie Award winner, the other, a vibrant comedy out of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Finally, we’ll conclude our mainstage season with an unforgettable Tony Awardwinning musical. Our 2018-19 season features characters laughing, crying, loving, rebelling, mourning and soaring... out loud. These are sit-up-and-take-notice stories that will dare you to lean forward and be transported. Of course, our season wouldn’t be complete without our one-of-a-kind Tampa Bay tradition, American Stage in the Park. In 2019, we are thrilled to celebrate another production under the stars at Demens Landing with MAMMA MIA!, a high-energy romantic comedy set in a Greek Island paradise and featuring the eternally celebratory songs of ABBA. Join us on this year-long adventure and become a season subscriber; you'll enjoy great savings, best seats and exclusive benefits. American Stage subscribers are a part of a community of artists and audiences who are passionate about elevating the cultural life of Tampa Bay and creating opportunities for us to come together to engage, to connect, to celebrate, and indeed, to live…

TAMPA BAY AREA PREMIERE

TEACH. OUT LOUD. Nya, a single mother teaching at an inner-city public school, wants what’s best for her teenage son, Omari — even if it means sending him to a private school far from their neighborhood. But when an explosive classroom incident threatens Omari’s future, Nya must reevaluate the choices she’s made as a parent and educator. In this lyrical and timely drama, acclaimed playwright Dominique Morisseau brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the fore, compassionately probing the limits of our education system and a mother’s fight to give her son a future — without turning her back on the community that made him who he is.

LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT

MAY 29 – JUNE 30, 2019 By Eugene O’Neill

Directed by Brendon Fox BATTLE. OUT LOUD. Considered one of the all-time great American plays, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning masterwork lays bare what we all know to be true: the ardor of familial love cannot always protect you. What begins as an ordinary summer day at the Connecticut home of the Tyrone family morphs into a night filled with foggy, drink-laced demons. Long-buried secrets are revealed which once exposed cannot be ignored. A long-revered showcase for tour-deforce performances, Long Day’s Journey Into Night is a compassionately brutal look at the devastating impact of addiction and one family’s struggle to fight for love itself.
