AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE

Dear Friends of American Stage,

In an era that can often seem more surreal than sublime, the 2019-2020 American Stage Mainstage Series explores the American spirit, our pursuit of happiness, our resiliency, and our unrelenting hope in AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE. Our Mainstage season lineup traverses a landscape of powerful stories that explore the fantasy, the reality, the absurdity and the beauty

of the

American Dream. We'll meet a young Vietnamese couple who find one another in America in 1975 in playwright Qui Nguyen’s audacious, romantic road trip comedy, VIETGONE. In Lauren Gunderson’s SILENT SKY we go on an inspiring journey through space and time as a female astronomer defies presuffrage-era barriers. In Dominique Morisseau’s SKELETON CREW, blue-collar America is given a vibrantly honest voice in a Detroit auto plant during the Great Recession. The World Premiere of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS, written by St. Pete’s own Natalie Symons, brings us two ordinary, awkward social misfits who hilariously stumble together toward something extraordinary. Joshua Harmon’s razor-sharp wit returns to our stage in the searing dark comedy about college, race and privilege in ADMISSIONS. We conclude our dreamscape with the 19-20 American Legacy Series selection, the Tony-Award winning rock musical about an American family, trying to find stable ground in NEXT TO NORMAL. In 2020, the American Stage in the Park tradition continues under the stars at Demens Landing with the rockin’ rhythms of FOOTLOOSE.

Like the American

spirit, the upcoming mainstage season is rambunctious, ambitious, defiant, heartfelt, and optimistic, introducing characters moving through the strange and incredible journey of the American experience. If a dreamscape is a surreal fantasy, AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE is an impassioned adventure toward an ideal that always feels within reach. Join us and experience AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE, American Stage's 2019-2020 season full of motion, music and moments of awe. I look forward to seeing you at the theatre!

“THE FRESHEST, MOST EXUBERANTLY YOUTHFUL PIECE I’VE SEEN...” – Time Out New York

VIETGONE By Qui Nguyen

Directed by Brian Balcom

OCT 2 – NOV 3, 2019 An all-American love story about two very new Americans. It’s 1975. Saigon has fallen. He lost his wife. She lost her fiancé. But now in a new land, they just might find each other. Using his uniquely infectious style and skipping back and forth from the dramatic evacuation of Saigon to the here and now – playwright Qui Nguyen gets up-close-andpersonal to tell the story that led to the creation of…Qui Nguyen. REGIONAL PREMIERE Audience Advisory: Contains strong language, sexuality and adult situations. Age Recommendation: 16+ 4

2019 - 2020

“…SHEER MAGIC…BURSTS OF SMART, INFECTIOUS HUMOR.” – San Francisco Chronicle

SILENT SKY By Lauren Gunderson

Directed by Kristin Clippard

NOV 20 - DEC 22, 2019 When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea and instead must chart the stars for a renowned astronomer. In her free time, while she attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, and balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. “A DEEPLY MORAL AND DEEPLY AMERICAN PLAY.” – The New York Times

SKELETON CREW By Dominique Morisseau Directed by L. Peter Callender

JAN 22 – FEB 23, 2020 It’s 2008, and one of the last auto plants in Detroit is on shaky ground. The remaining factory workers are living paycheck-to-paycheck and now each of the workers must navigate the possibility of foreclosure. As power dynamics shift, and they are pushed to the limits of survival, the line between blue collar and white collar gets blurred. With moments of heartbreak and humor, SKELETON CREW is a beautiful homage to the American blue collar worker. 2019 - 2020

WORLD PREMIERE

THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS By Natalie Symons

Directed by Chris Crawford

MAR 11 – APR 5, 2020 In Buffalo NY, Miles, an aging funeral home custodian, lives with his middle-aged daughter Mabel, who spends her days writing letters to prison inmates. When a courtappointed guardian threatens to take away their home, Miles sets out to set Mabel up with Todd, an inept mortician. A father’s fierce determination not to accept his daughter’s fate ignites an endearing human comedy about love, loss, loneliness, and the healing power of laughter. 21ST CENTURY VOICES: NEW PLAY FESTIVAL - MAINSTAGE SELECTION Age Recommendation: 12+ AMERICANSTAGE.ORG

“A SMART, HILARIOUS AND PROVOCATIVE DRAMA.” – The Hollywood Reporter

ADMISSIONS By Joshua Harmon

Directed by Michael Stevenson

MAY 27 – JUN 28, 2020 Sherri Rosen-Mason is head of the admissions department at a New England prep school, fighting to diversify the student body. Alongside her husband, the school’s Headmaster, they’ve largely succeeded in bringing a stodgy institution into the twentyfirst century. But when their only son sets his sights on an Ivy League university, personal ambition collides with progressive values with convulsive results. “ROCK IS ALIVE AND ROLLING LIKE THUNDER… AN EMOTIONAL POWERHOUSE.” – Rolling Stone AMERICAN LEGACY SERIES SELECTION:

Presented by the Legacy Society of American Stage

NEXT TO NORMAL

Book and Lyrics by Brian Yorkey & Music by Tom Kitt Directed by Stephanie Gularte

JUL 15 – AUG 16, 2020 This powerful rock musical that took Broadway by storm is a tremendously moving, intimate and ultimately hopeful look at how a “normal” suburban family copes with the effects of mental illness. The Goodmans seem like a perfect family. The only problem is that sometimes mother Diana is, well … a little too happy. Her husband Dan worries all the time. Her daughter Natalie seems awfully intent on getting that scholarship to Yale. And her son Gabe, well … that’s another story entirely.
