Inspire.

In a word, Raymond James believes in the transformative power of the arts. Perhaps the most meaningful thing you can do with success is share it. And when you do that with care and conviction, giving can be an art form – one Raymond James has been practicing since 1962. Today, we carry on the charitable legacy of our founder Bob James in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

Raymond James is proud to support the American Stage Theatre Company.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT / DIRECTOR'S NOTE

JORDAN HARRISON

nathan. Every day is Science fiction is here, Jo these things that already science fiction. We buy em like our loved ones.” treat th - Tess, MARJORIE PRIME know our moods… We A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR STEPHANIE GULARTE

Jordan Harrison was inspired to write MARJORIE PRIME after reading The Most Human Human: What Artificial Intelligence Teaches Us About Being Alive, in which author Brian Christian recounts his experience as a participant in The Loebner competition. In this Turing Test-inspired event, humans are pitted against chat bots to determine whether the machines can "fool" judges into believing that they are, in fact, human. Prizes are awarded to the "most human" chat bot, the machine most able to convince the judges that it is human, and to the "most human human" the flesh and blood participant who distinguishes themselves as the most distinct from their AI counterparts. The age of Artificial Intelligence is not ahead of us, it is upon us. Through the rehearsal process, we wrestled with questions about what it means to be human. In the rapidly advancing terrain of Artificial Intelligence, which characteristics remain exclusively human? What, if any, are the limitations of artificial intelligence? What compels us to use technology to create machines in our own image? In replacing humans with technology, what is lost? While the play exists in the realm of science fiction, what makes Harrison's work so intriguing is the way in which it uses the evolution of this technology to delicately expose the vagaries of the human heart and mind. Ultimately, MARJORIE PRIME is a story about three very human humans who are doing what humans (exclusively?) do: attempting to connect, to be truly seen and heard, and to believe that our life story mattered. - Stephanie Gularte, Producing Artistic Director

This season, American Stage asks our community to be a part of the ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ movement. To honor our commitment to the community, we have partnered with seven talented local artists to create visual interpretations of the plays in our season. To inspire and immerse visual artists in the experience of creating a production, each artist was invited to participate in the rehearsal process. This informs the creation of a unique 24” x 36” original signature artwork to be displayed in our lobby. These signature pieces are then donated to American Stage as a fundraiser toward the 40 FORWARD campaign. Visit americanstage.org/BID to participate.

FEATURED VISUAL ARTIST

Artists Supporting Artists

American Stage is donating their gallery space to each visual artist for an exhibition through the run of each partner production to promote and support each artist’s business.

Featured Visual Artist

Thank you to the talented visual artist Chad Mize who, along with professional photographer Joey Clay, and the American Stage in-house design team created the production artwork for THE PRODUCERS, coming to Demens Landing Park this Spring. "Collaboration and unity bring different views and eyes to a project. Different ideas that you may not see at first or even think of." - Chad Mize CHAD MIZE is a multimedia artist, designer and muralist residing in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1974, and then moved to Tampa Bay Florida, where he spent most of his childhood. An early interest in art resulted in his earning a BFA in Visual Communications at the University of Mississippi. With a love for past and contemporary culture, he takes a humorous, tongue-incheek approach to his designs, which include playful doodles, colorful patterns, political art and graphics with text. In 2010, Mize opened BLUELUCY, a gallery in St. Petersburg, where he represented over 450 local and national artists. When the gallery closed in 2015, Mize founded his own lifestyle and design brand, CHIZZY. His contributions to the thriving St. Petersburg art scene also include working on the SHINE Mural Festival, which brings artists from around the world to paint murals in St. Petersburg. Mize's work is held in numerous private and corporate collections nationally and internationally.

WE THE PEOPLE  ART - PRELUDE TO PARK Come together as we celebrate THE PRODUCERS' featured visual artist. Chad Mize will present a Gallery Show through May 13th in our lobby. Visit concessions or the box office to purchase. Artist Meet & Greet Reception: Friday, Mar 16 @ 7PM Proceeds benefit American Stage & visual artist, Chad Mize.

ACT 1 CLUB ANNUAL FUND MEMBERS

American Stage's ACT 1 CLUB Annual Fund has become the cornerstone of our organizational plan to balance highquality, meaningful theatrical programming with a sound business model built to last for generations to come. ACT 1 CLUB Members provide the steady stream of support vital to our pursuit of exploring and celebrating the human experience through live theatre. Gifts of all sizes make a difference. Contributions up to $100 will be recognized on our website. Donors contributing $100 or more annually are recognized as ACT 1 CLUB Members, and will receive a variety of special benefits designed to bring them closer to the art and artists of American Stage. Visit americanstage.org/DONATE to learn more. This season, as we celebrate 40 years of bringing powerful, professional live theatre to the Tampa Bay area, we thank you for being a part of that journey. We invite you to join us in imagining the possibilities for American Stage’s impact on the arts in our community as we engage the next generation of artists, audiences and advocates. 40Forward! - Young Americans is a new initiative inspired by American Stage’s commitment to the long-term future of our organization and to professional live theatre throughout Tampa Bay and beyond. This initiative is our commitment to support our American Stage apprenticeships, our Under 30 Pass, and our unprecedented, bold move to make all of our mainstage programming in 2018 free to young people under the age of 20, which will help us grow the future audiences of live theatre in Tampa Bay. We continually strive to celebrate our donors, and every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list. Please contact our Development Team to report errors, changes or omissions at (727) 823-1600 x 207 or development@ americanstage.org. THANK YOU FOR BEING KIND AND SPECIAL

This year marks 40 years of powerful storytelling in our community. Artists and audiences came together for a wonderful AS40 celebration on 10/6/17. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit professional theatre, we rely on the generosity of individuals and organizations who empower American Stage to make a meaningful impact in our community. American Stage would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the wonderful contributors who support us through in-kind donations of products and services and through special event fundraising participation. Our sincere gratitude goes out to all of our American Stage friends and community partners who came together for the American Century Cycle Celebration fundraiser on 1.29.17, truly creating a night to remember. Thank you for making last year's Gala Under the Stars, held on the opening night of American Stage in the Park, a great success for our artists and our community. Proceeds from this extraordinary evening support the artistic and educational programming at American Stage. A very special thank you also goes out to our hospitality partners who provide food, beverage and lodging for American Stage patron and artist events throughout the year.
