This season, we've invited our community to come together to experience LIFE. OUT LOUD with a line-up plays featuring characters laughing, crying, loving, rebelling, mourning and soaring... out loud. These are sit-up-and-take-notice stories that will dare you to lean forward and be transported. This summer our LIFE. OUT LOUD season concludes with the fresh and unforgettable musical, FUN HOME. Based on Alison Bechdel’s iconic graphic novel, FUN HOME became one of the biggest Broadway musical hits of the last decade, winning five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical. I am thrilled to close out our season with this powerful reckoning of childhood memories, of innocence and of awakening and to share its moving characters and music with our audiences in our intimate space, as we share Alison's journey of GROWING UP. A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR KARLA HARTLEY

Theater, in my view, should foster understanding between people who have differing opinions and ways of living. In a time when the willingness to genuinely listen to and understand others seems to be waning, providing audiences with work that reveals a life with which they may be unfamiliar is more necessary than ever before. What makes FUN HOME extraordinary is that the play allows us to see each phase of the coming out process — from the awkward adolescent who knows she’s different but doesn’t know why to the awakening of a burgeoning sexual identity to the confidence of a woman who knows exactly who she is. It also shows us the other side of that coin — the inner torture of a man who cannot accept who he is. FUN HOME gives us all thoughtful insight to lives that are deserving of respect and understanding. Thank you for joining us on the journey. - Karla Hartley, Director

EXCERPT FROM THE ATLANTIC MAGAZINE

'WE JUST SAT AND HELD EACH OTHER':

HOW IT FEELS TO WATCH YOUR LIFE STORY ONSTAGE The following excerpt from The Atlantic is Alysia Abbot’s interview with FUN HOME author Alison Bechdel At the preview I attended, I saw you in the lobby with your 91-year-old aunt and your brothers. How did it feel watching the show sitting with them? Was their reaction to the show different than their reaction to the book? Alison Bechdel (AB): You don’t see people reading your book. You do see people watching a play. Which is, I guess, why people write and perform in plays because you get that immediate feedback. But it’s also a very emotional medium. Musicals can be very emotionally powerful. I think that Lisa and Jeanine drew something out of my book that I was not able to get to, a really potent, cathartic feeling.

Did your family like it? AB: Yeah, they did seem to like it. My youngest brother and I, we had this amazing moment of crying together. After the cast left the stage, we just kind of sat there and held each other, which we’ve never done.

Your mother, Helen, has a beautiful number about the burden of making everything perfect, “Days and Days and Days.” The song seemed to convey her sadness and also the impossibility of her situation. Did you feel this number captured her experience? AB: I did. I feel like my mother was a prisoner of her generation in the same way my father was. She couldn’t leave that marriage. You couldn’t get divorced as easily as now, even if she had wanted to.

You wrote that in writing Fun Home you wanted to give your father “a proper funeral.” In the musical FUN HOME, you’re watching your father dying again and again, every time it runs. What was that like for you? AB: So far, my viewings of the play have been fraught. I know the people involved in the production are anxious to know my response. So, it’s hard for me to have my own direct response. The first time I saw the play, I was sobbing. But now I can’t help but having a certain guard up. It’s much the same as when my father actually died. I cried for five minutes and then I stopped. And that was the last time I cried about it for many years.

Fun Home is a graphic novel but there’s only one graphic image from the book that appears in the show, and that’s the image of your father hoisting you in the air, in the game of airplane. Was that a surprise to you? AB: That was a total surprise to me. At earlier stages there were elements of my drawings that were incorporated. At a certain point I realized that they were not going to do that anymore and I felt kind of disappointed. But I was like, Fine. They got to the essence of the book. It doesn’t matter. But then there’s that final image, which is the beginning image from the book. And that felt very powerful to me, to limit it to one image, at the very end. And that perfect image that sums everything up was very wonderful.

THANK YOU FOR BEING KIND AND SPECIAL

American Stage would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the generous contributors who support us through in-kind donations of products and services and through special event fundraising participation. We are proud to present two very special fundraising evenings each season in fall and spring that support our artistic and educational programming year-round. We are especially grateful to all who made the 2019 Gala Under the Stars this Spring a great success for our artists and our community. This year both the Gala Under the Stars and the American Stage in the Park production of MAMMA MIA! had record-breaking attendance. It is because of the incredible generosity of our donors and community partners that we can create such a wonderful community tradition for all to share. This fall we will come together, in support of our Mainstage Series, to celebrate the start of a new season at American Stage with our 19.20 AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE Celebration on October 11, 2019 hosted at The Birchwood. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit professional theatre, we rely on the generosity of individuals and organizations who empower American Stage to make a meaningful impact in our community with powerful stories...boldly told. Visit americanstage.org/CELEBRATE A very special thank you also goes out to our hospitality partners who provide food, beverage and lodging for American Stage patron and artist events throughout the year.
