LIFE. OUT LOUD. Novelist Émile Zola proclaimed, “If you ask me what I came into this
live out loud.” The Urban Dictionary describes living out loud as “Living on purpose, living passionately for your values. Letting others see your light shine, and not being afraid to be different.” life to do, I will tell you: I came to
Last season, we began a movement with WE THE PEOPLE, our season theme reflecting American Stage’s commitment to embrace the opportunity to engage with one another through the sharing of compelling stories. In 2018-19, we continue to build our WE THE PEOPLE community with powerful, bold live theatre. This season, we are coming together to experience LIFE. OUT LOUD. At American Stage, we are committed to telling stories that impact our hearts and minds, honor our diversity, embrace our differences, and rejoice in our shared experience of what it is to be human. Our season theme, LIFE. OUT LOUD. reflects our passion for Powerful Stories, Boldly Told and our commitment to promote connection and unity in our community through the sharing of a diversity of perspectives and experiences. The third production in our season and the first of 2019 highlights the work one of the most compelling American playwrights writing for the stage today. Recent recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation's "genius grant," Dominique Morisseau brings a vibrant, urgent voice to our national conversations and does so with an incredible humanity that makes her characters and their lives feel entirely relatable. PIPELINE explores the big topics of education, race and class while also honestly depicting the hopes and intense fears felt by parents as they try to help their children navigate an often unjust world. Looking further into the year, we're excited to present an exciting new voice in the theatre with Jen Silverman's dark comedy, THE ROOMMATE, the second Pulitzer Prize-winner of our season LONG DAY'S JOURNEY

INTO NIGHT, and the fresh and unforgettable Tony Award-winning musical, FUN HOME. Our 2018-19 season features characters laughing, crying, loving, rebelling, mourning and soaring... out loud. These are sit-up-and-take-notice stories that will dare you to lean forward and be transported. Of course, our season wouldn’t be complete without our one-of-a-kind Tampa Bay tradition, American Stage in the Park. In 2019, we are thrilled to celebrate another production under the stars at Demens Landing with MAMMA MIA!, a high-energy romantic comedy set in a Greek Island paradise and featuring the eternally celebratory songs of ABBA. I invite you to join our community of artists and audiences who are passionate about elevating the cultural life of Tampa Bay and creating opportunities for us to come together to engage, to connect, to celebrate, and indeed, to live…

Give.
In a word, Raymond James believes in the multiplying power of generosity.
With one simple action, you can spark something greater than yourself. That’s what Bob James did back in 1962 when he founded Raymond James. He believed a business had a responsibility to generate more than profits. Today, we continue his legacy in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIF E W E L L P LA N N E D.

THE ROOMMATE MAR 13 – APR 7, 2019 By Jen Silverman Directed by Kristin Clippard "When I saw the world premiere of Jen Silverman's THE ROOMMATE at the Humana Festival of New Plays, I joined the rest of the audience in being completely charmed and surprised by the unique and comical friendship that evolves between Sharon and Robyn. The story is a wickedly funny take on reinventing oneself but it also gives us something all too rare in the theatre: two characters who defy our assumptions and expectations about 'women of a certain age'..." - Stephanie Gularte, Producing Artistic Director

A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR L. PETER CALLENDER
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT / DIRECTOR'S NOTE
DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU, PLAYWRIGHT
Dominique Morisseau's PIPELINE hits very close to home for this director. Born in the West Indies, I grew up in the North Bronx to a single mother struggling to make ends meet while working three, sometimes four jobs at a time, with two to three hours sleep daily, all in a brave and determined effort to keep her only child fed, educated, motivated and out of trouble. It was very dangerously close, at times. I could have been another statistic reporters and playwrights would chronicle in the future. Yet she was successful because of the selfless sacrifices she made on my behalf, all the while keeping a strong hand and a firm grasp on this young black kid with lots of time on his hands. I know many of my friends from "back in the day" who are no longer with us, dead or incarcerated, victims of what is now known as the "the school to prison pipeline" -- funneling students from public schools into the criminal justice system whose fate is often fatal. Black youth have been most impacted by this system, often targeted as early as 3rd grade! PIPELINE is, by far, Ms. Morisseau's most important work. It insists that its actors be open and vulnerable to raw emotions, portray characters disliked by audiences, and challenges its audiences to examine themselves asking: "What can I do to help? Why did I not know of this? Am I an aider and abettor in this crises?" It is a work that solemnly wails a mother’s grief and anger, shares a father’s heartbreak, shouts a teacher’s dogged determination to inspire, grapples with young love yearning to be realized and, most importantly, insists we hear the cries of a brilliant young man with two strikes against him, simply begging to be listened to, to not assume he is a criminal based on the color of his skin; asking that we treat him fairly, and have someone...to just show up for him. This play is an opus for our times, speaking to young and old of every race, economic and social class. It stands alongside the great works of Wilson, Hansberry and Baldwin. Ms. Morisseau taught school for many years in Detroit. She comes from a line of dedicated educators. In PIPELINE, she is all the characters she writes about! The bell has rung. Let's take our seats. It's time we TEACH THE CHILDREN. OUT LOUD! - L. Peter Callender, Director

EXCERPT FROM AMERICAN THEATRE MAGAZINE
PUSH AND PULL:
DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU’S ‘PIPELINE’ The following is an interview excerpt from American Theatre Magazine BY KAMILAH FORBES PIPELINE is so reflective of what’s happening in our school systems all across the country. What was the spur to this topic for you? DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU (DM): I was reading the Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, and I was really struck by the school-to-prison pipeline, and what it means to have people go straight from school right into prison—how you can systemically create that kind of structure, so that it’s not just individual, it actually becomes a way of socializing our community. I think that’s about policy. We put a lot of blame on public schools and public school teachers, but every time we call a teacher a failure, I’m saying: Who failed the teacher? Because everything has a trickle down.
One of the striking things in your work is the depth and breadth of the voice of your characters. I’m curious: Do you hear the character’s voice first, or do you hear the scene around the subject you’re trying to illuminate first? DM: That’s a good question. At first, I go: What am I interested in exploring? So if I’m interested in exploring a topic or issue—not just random ideas and topics, but things that move me, where I can’t sleep, and I’m wrestling with something internally that I haven’t found quite all the words to express how I feel about it. Then I go: Well, okay, if I want to talk about the school-to-prison pipeline, who do I want to explore this story through the eyes of? With PIPELINE, I knew I needed a teacher, I needed a mother; so it could be a mother/teacher. I knew it was a mother and a son, but I didn’t know I was going to see the father. And then as they talked about him, I thought, I need to see him. I want his side of the story. I don’t want to just talk about an absent father like this typical, clichéd thing.
I find it fascinating that, for someone who’s so resolute in her political stance on a myriad of issues, you are still able to balance the nuance—to basically not pick sides with your characters. You love them all fiercely. Why is that? DM: Even if I don’t agree with everything everybody does in my plays, I do love them, because I’m trying so hard to understand them. Because they reflect our world, and I want to make the world better. I truly—even though it sounds so Pollyanna, and that’s not me—I really do think the better human being I can become, the better writer I can become, and vice versa. It’s funny. When I was in elementary school, I had this debate class. I had to debate gun control; I was pro-gun control and my opponent was supposed to be anti-gun control, but I don’t think that she understood the assignment, because she kept arguing for gun control with me, and I was so bored by the conversation. I was like, “She’s not even counterpointing me!” So I think I am ignited by debate, and I like a worthy opponent. I like to see things from all ends, if only to just strengthen my own ideas.
You’re saying the conversation that the work spawns is just as important as the work. DM: Absolutely. I come from mentors who say the best plays do more asking of questions than they do answering them. So when I go, “I’m going to ask some questions,” I got to then let the people answer them, or what am I asking for?
LIFE. OUT LOUD. “We are imperfect creatures. The gift of LIFE is a one time thing. LIVE LIFE, flaws and all, the best you can, always remembering TOMORROW IS NOT PROMISED to any of us!” 16 2018 - 2019 SEASON • PIPELINE

THANK YOU FOR BEING KIND AND SPECIAL American Stage would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the generous contributors who support us through in-kind donations of products and services and through special event fundraising participation. We are proud to present two very special fundraising evenings each season in fall and spring. This fall, in support of our Mainstage Series, we celebrated the start of a new season at American Stage with our 18.19 LIFE. OUT LOUD Celebration on October 12, 2018 hosted at The Birchwood. Join us again in the spring, as we celebrate the opening night of the annual American Stage in the Park production, with our signature fundraising event the Gala Under the Stars. These extraordinary evenings support the artistic and educational programming at American Stage year-round. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit professional theatre, we rely on the generosity of individuals and organizations who empower American Stage to make a meaningful impact in our community. A very special thank you also goes out to our hospitality partners who provide food, beverage and lodging for American Stage patron and artist events throughout the year.
