Give.

In a word, Raymond James believes in the multiplying power of generosity.

With one simple action, you can spark something greater than yourself. That’s what Bob James did back in 1962 when he founded Raymond James. He believed a business had a responsibility to generate more than profits. Today, we continue his legacy in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIF E W E L L P LA N N E D.

Raymond James is proud to support the American Stage Theatre Company.

BAD JEWS

A SERIOUSLY SMART COMEDY ABOUT FAMILY, FAITH & LEGACY

...ARE TRYI N G TO K EEP TH E FA I TH

"Joshua Harmon wrote BAD JEWS several years after attending an awkward Holocaust memorial service that left him considering how his generation will manage the responsibility of passing on this history. Hailed as “THE BEST COMEDY OF THE SEASON.” by the New York Times, this play is also a smart, incisive examination of how younger generations choose to protect the profound legacies of their forebearers." - Stephanie Gularte, Producing Artistic Director

14 2017 - 2018 SEASON • STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR

STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR came out of an NPR report and a memory. I was driving around, by myself, listening to NPR in 2012 or so. They were reporting on the Patriot Act. I was shocked that there was so much I didn’t know. In particular, I didn’t realize that this act of Congress eliminated habeas corpus for the accused. The Patriot Act had been law since 2001, how did I not know this? And, as usually happens when I am confounded, I start to think about a play. Then, a memory came to me. In the early 1990s, I had briefly dated a Moroccan man. This was nothing like Miriam and Sameer’s love affair in the play. At the time I worked for a bank. We met in an acting class. He came to me one day and asked if I would put money in my account for him. It wasn’t that much money, but he couldn’t explain why he needed me to do this, and I said no. We stopped hanging out not much later. When I remembered this, I thought, that’s my way into this story. Personalizing the story, falling in love with Miriam and Sameer as they fall in love with each other, allowed me to get inside the experience and cost of this law.

PLAYWRIGHT / DIRECTOR'S NOTES

A NOTE FROM PLAYWRIGHT ANDREA LEPCIO

A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR JIM SORENSEN

As my wife, playwright Natalie Symons says, every play that we’ve ever seen was at one time a brand new piece of theatre. A Raisin in the Sun, Death of a Salesman, even Hamlet were each once a story that existed purely in the mind of the author. But as with all theatrical works, it is the process of collaboration that brings the story to life. Actors, designers, directors, even the audience can influence and alter the story that is ultimately told.

Strait of Gibraltar is the first play to be produced as a result of American Stage’s 21st Century Voices: New Play Festival, and I am deeply honored to be a member of this production's creative team. This is the second time this play has ever been given a full production, and as many playwrights attest, it is the second production that is perhaps the most valuable in the life of the play; if the first production is about finding the play’s "legs", then the second is often about refining and focusing the story. I’m particularly grateful to work with the playwright, Andrea Lepcio, who has generously shared her time & energy with us on a nearly daily basis throughout the rehearsal process, and who has been happy and willing to truly collaborate as we explore this story. And what a story. An unlikely romance that explores questions of trust – between individuals, between societies, between government and its people. For those of us who get to work on this piece, it has inspired a rich discussion and endless admiration and appreciation as it has asked us to take a harder look at ourselves, at our beliefs and our views of “others”. Perhaps a good story doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know but instead reminds us of things we’ve forgotten or things we've neglected to face. In our divided world I believe that good theatre does more than reflect our collective humanity; it reminds us that we are not alone, even in our differences. Thank you Andrea for sharing this story and for allowing us to bring it to life at American Stage. I’m so thrilled to be part of its telling. - Jim Sorensen, Director

MEET OUR 2017/2018 APPRENTICES American Stage's Apprenticeship Program, the first pillar in our Youth Initiative, is dedicated to developing the future of our art form. Young theatre makers spend a year immersed in a professional theatre environment, apprenticing alongside experienced theatre professionals. Learn more at americanstage.org/YA

TATO CASTILLO

Tato was most recently seen in MUCH ADO at American Stage. He has been performing in plays and as a dancer since he was in preschool. In high school he was an Intern for American Stage, which helped him decide that he wanted to be an actor professionally. His favorite credits are A WILD PARTY by Andrew Lippy at the Palladium Theatre, THE ROYALE at American Stage and a piece choreographed by Pilobulos Dance Company at his alma mater in partnership with Valencia Community College. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

KODY HOPKINS

Kody is excited to be joining American Stage as one of its 201718 Acting/Production Apprentices. He holds a BFA in Acting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he performed in a diverse array of plays from school tours to Shakespeare. American Stage play goers may have most recently seen him in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (Ensemble) or IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (Foley). His biggest dream is to run his own theatre one day (much like American Stage!).

TARILABO KORIPAMO

Tarilabo, originally from Nigeria, moved to the United States in 2013. She graduated with a theater degree from Guilford College. Credits include: RIMERS OF ELDRITCH, DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE, THE CRUCIBLE, MISALLIANCE, and more. Tarilabo is also a recommended certified stage combatant by the National stage combat workshop. She has served as a fight co-director and captain on multiple productions. She is honored to be a part of the professional team at American Stage.

COURTNEY ANNE MCLAREN

Courtney holds a BA from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts with concentrations in theatre, music, and arts management. At MCLA, her credits include: Sally Bowles in CABARET; Wendla in SPRING AWAKENING; Harper in ANGELS IN AMERICA ( Part I), and Clarice in THE LIAR. While in college, she spent summers as an acting apprentice at three renowned New England theaters: Berkshire Theatre Group, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, and Williamstown Theatre Festival. Before joining American Stage, she acted as an Artist-in-Residence at Berkshire Theatre Group, performing in touring shows, teaching playwrighting and acting skills, and leading afterschool programs. At American Stage, Courtney has had the pleasure of performing in the educational school tour show, RIKKI TIKKI TAVI, as well as the Mainstage production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Courtney sends her thanks to family and friends for their love and support.

TAYLOR SWEAT

Taylor was most recently unseen as a rooster wrangler (and Assistant Stage Manager) in American Stage’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. She graduated in 2017 with a BA in Theatre from Florida Gulf Coast University. During her time in school, she worked as a spotlight operator and assistant stage manager at TheatreZone in Naples, FL, shadowed the stage management team for the KINKY BOOTS tour, and taught drama during the summer of 2016 in Stuart, FL at the Lyric Theatre. Since graduating, she was the production management intern for the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, where she also drove the courtesy van to NYC. Taylor is excited to start the New Year with American Stage, continuing work as the Production and Stage Management Apprentice! Favorite credits include: XANADU, THE FOREIGNER, DAMES AT SEA, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, and THE ROYALE. Taylor is a member of the Stage Manager’s Association and USITT.

This season, American Stage asks our community to be a part of the ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ movement. To honor our commitment to the community, we have partnered with seven talented local artists to create visual interpretations of the plays in our season. To inspire and immerse visual artists in the experience of creating a production, each artist was invited to participate in the rehearsal process. This informs the creation of a unique 24” x 36” original signature artwork to be displayed in our lobby. These signature pieces are then donated to American Stage as a fundraiser toward the 40 FORWARD campaign. Visit americanstage.org/BID to participate.

FEATURED VISUAL ARTIST

Artists Supporting Artists

American Stage is donating their gallery space to each visual artist for an exhibition through the run of each partner production to promote and support each artist’s business.

Featured Visual Artist

Thank you to the talented visual artist Coralette Damme who, along with professional photographer Joey Clay, and the American Stage in-house design team created the production artwork for STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR. "This is an opportunity to share a creative process with a new team, something I don't usually get to do working on my own. It is interesting to see how different interpretations come together to create a visual image... Given the involvement of multiple local artists, this season theme seems much more inclusive and grass roots, sharing talents of a diverse range of people... In order to promote social understanding we need to talk to each other and engage more. We're all hidden behind screens and more isolated with algorithms determining what ideas we're exposed to. This makes it all that much more vital to be involved directly with people around you who may have differing backgrounds." - Coralette Damme CORALETTE DAMME earned her BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Known locally for her linoleum block prints, Coralette employs a contemporary, experimental approach in her work. This results in her hand pressed images typically being singular, one of a kind works of art, rather than part of a large edition of prints. Coralette finds inspiration in holiday traditions, the natural world, folk legends, and symbols.

WE THE PEOPLE  ART!

Come together as we celebrate STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR's featured visual artist. Coralette Damme will present a Gallery Show through June 17th in our lobby. Visit concessions or the box office to purchase. Artist Meet & Greet Reception: Friday, Jun 1 @ 7PM Proceeds benefit American Stage & visual artist, Coralette Damme.

Donors contributing $100 or more annually are recognized as ACT 1 CLUB Members, and can receive a variety of special benefits designed to bring them closer to the art and artists of American Stage. ACT 1 CLUB Members provide the steady stream of support vital to our pursuit of exploring and celebrating the human experience through live theatre. Gifts of all sizes make a difference. THANK YOU FOR BEING KIND AND SPECIAL American Stage would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the generous contributors who support us through in-kind donations of products and services and through special event fundraising participation. We are especially grateful to all who made the 2018 Gala Under the Stars a great success for our artists and our community. We did it together! You helped support the artistic and educational programming at American Stage year-round with an extraordinary evening for all. What a wonderful way to celebrate the annual American Stage in the Park production. This year also marks 40 years of powerful storytelling in our community. Artists and audiences came together for a momentous AS40 celebration on 10/6/17. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit professional theatre, we rely on the generosity of individuals and organizations who empower American Stage to make a meaningful impact in our community. A very special thank you also goes out to our hospitality partners who provide food, beverage and lodging for American Stage patron and artist events throughout the year.
