POWERFUL STORIES. BOLDLY TOLD.

#asRIVERSIDE

HUSTLE. OUT LOUD. Co-Sponsors: The American Stage Board of Trustees Russell Buchan Lorraine & Neil Franckle

LIFE. OUT LOUD. Last season, we began a movement with WE THE PEOPLE, our season theme reflecting American Stage’s commitment to embrace the opportunity to engage with one another through the sharing of compelling stories. In 2018-19, we continue to build our WE THE PEOPLE community with powerful, bold live theatre. This season, we are coming together to experience LIFE. OUT LOUD. Novelist Émile Zola proclaimed, "If you ask me what I came into this life

live out loud." The Urban Dictionary describes living out loud as "Living on purpose, living passionately for your values. Letting others see your light shine, and not being afraid to be different." to do, I will tell you: I came to

At American Stage, we are committed to telling stories that impact our hearts and minds, honor our diversity, embrace our differences, and rejoice in our shared experience of what it is to be human. Our season theme, LIFE. OUT LOUD. reflects our passion for Powerful Stories, Boldly Told and our commitment to promote connection and unity in our community through the sharing of a diversity of perspectives and experiences. In our six-play mainstage season, we’ll go on an exhilarating journey that includes: two Pulitzer Prize winners — one an American theatre classic, the other, a contemporary American theatre Broadway hit; plus, a bright and romantic reimagining of a literary classic, two hot new plays from exciting emerging voices — one a 2018 Obie Award winner, the other, a vibrant comedy out of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Finally, we’ll conclude our mainstage season with an unforgettable Tony Awardwinning musical. Our 2018-19 season features characters laughing, crying, loving, rebelling, mourning and soaring... out loud. These are sit-up-and-take-notice stories that will dare you to lean forward and be transported.

2018 - 2019 SEASON • BETWEEN RIVERSIDE & CRAZY

Of course, our season wouldn’t be complete without our one-of-a-kind Tampa Bay tradition, American Stage in the Park. In 2019, we are thrilled to celebrate another production under the stars at Demens Landing with MAMMA MIA!, a high-energy romantic comedy set in a Greek Island paradise and featuring the eternally celebratory songs of ABBA. Join us on this year-long adventure and become a season subscriber; you'll enjoy great savings, best seats and exclusive benefits. American Stage subscribers are a part of a community of artists and audiences who are passionate about elevating the cultural life of Tampa Bay and creating opportunities for us to come together to engage, to connect, to celebrate, and indeed, to live…

LIFE. OUT LOUD.

Give.

In a word, Raymond James believes in the multiplying power of generosity.

With one simple action, you can spark something greater than yourself. That’s what Bob James did back in 1962 when he founded Raymond James. He believed a business had a responsibility to generate more than profits. Today, we continue his legacy in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIF E W E L L P LA N N E D.

Raymond James is proud to support the American Stage Theatre Company.

14 2018 - 2019 SEASON • BETWEEN RIVERSIDE & CRAZY

On Staging Profanity

From Stephanie Gularte, Producing Artistic Director Throughout my years of programming and producing for the stage I’ve often encountered variations on the question “Why can’t you cut out the curse words?” The query usually follows a compliment along the lines of “The play was great but…” Of course, my first response is to address the sincere question with the most straightforward answer: cutting out or changing words of dialogue in a published play is a strict violation of our licensing agreement. To do such a thing and to be found out would be to risk not only having the license for that production pulled, it would compromise American Stage’s ability to secure other titles in the future. It’s a big deal. But the response that I am more eager to give is: “Why would you want those words cut?” That’s when the conversation gets more interesting. When I ask this question, I do so in earnest. I’m always curious to learn how the dialogue of a play, along with the characters, the story line, the themes, the performances and the production values, impact our audiences. Common responses include “It just seems unnecessary,” “People we know don’t speak that way,” and even “It was a distraction from the story.” I can’t argue with any of those answers. They are as true for that audience member as they are untrue for the person sitting a few seats over. There is no tried and true formula in the play selection process. It is an undertaking that is highly subjective, is by its nature risky, and in the end, is sure to disappoint at least a handful of previously ardent fans.

PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S NOTE

THE POWER OF WORDS

So, in my research, when I come across a play like the Pulitzer Prize winner BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY, a play that has many of the subjective hallmarks of a great piece of theatre I pause and think about the nature of profanity and its potential impact when uttered on stage. I ask myself, “Do I believe that these characters would speak this way under those circumstances?” If the play is well-written, the answer is an undeniable “yes.” A good play is made up of, among other things, well-written dialogue that allows us to believe the story, it is an essential component to the potentially transporting experience of live theatre. Yes, I believe these characters in that situation would speak this way. The next question I ask myself is the more complex one: “What would be lost if these characters did not use those words?” Since curse words are a social construct and their potency and ability to offend, unnerve or shock are basically arbitrary, why couldn’t the playwright choose different words? Words less likely to make some uncomfortable? Language less apt to draw attention to itself? Couldn’t we understand “Pops” just as well if he didn’t pepper his sentences with “F-Bombs” quite so freely? A New York Times piece entitled The Case for Cursing notes “…as children we’re taught that cursing is inappropriate, betrays a limited vocabulary or is somehow low class…But profanity serves a physiological, emotional and social purpose — and it’s effective only because it’s inappropriate.” Precisely because we have imbued these “bad” words with the power of the taboo, when they are used they pack a visceral punch. Dr. Bergen, professor of cognitive science at UC San Diego says that beyond making a point provocatively, profanity provides catharsis, “These words, of course, don’t have any intrinsic, mystical power that confers superhuman strength and endurance. It is simply the act of speaking a taboo word that makes it cathartic.” When asked about his use of profanity in his plays, BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY and THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis says he uses curse words “…to depict reality. I’m not trying to advance a social cause. I write what I hear. And the characters that I write, that’s how they talk.” I never attempt to change the mind of someone who objects to the words spoken on our stage. The dissension is an essential ingredient to the intended potency of these words. Nor would I ever presume to tell a playwright which words his/her characters should or should not utter. Afterall, I’m not so sure that we would understand the character of Walter “Pops” Washington quite so well, that his particular psychology would be quite as effectively conveyed if he spoke with a more agreeable vocabulary.

LIFE. OUT LOUD. “Having the courage to explore beyond our comfort zones. It is a call to be brave enough to try new things, meet new people, explore cultures that are different than your own and to be open to new experiences.”- Jerid Fox, Production Designer & Properties Master A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR BENJAMIN T. ISMAIL

Stephen Adly Guirgis is a soul-stirring playwright, using bold, raw, relatable characters and sharp, incisive (and very often humorous) dialogue to excavate the layers and intricacies of seemingly mundane situations and connections. Set in modern NYC, BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY is no exception tackling big questions of race, family and belief with a story about one man's journey to find grace and compassion in a world he doesn't feel welcomed or accepted in. This story looks at what it means to be a father versus what it means to be a dad; what it means to be black in America; and how the lies we tell, not just to others, but to ourselves, can create the thickest barrier to self-fulfillment and truly "Living. Out loud." - Benjamin T. Ismail, Director 16 2018 - 2019 SEASON • BETWEEN RIVERSIDE & CRAZY
