Give.

In a word, Raymond James believes in the multiplying power of generosity.

With one simple action, you can spark something greater than yourself. That’s what Bob James did back in 1962 when he founded Raymond James. He believed a business had a responsibility to generate more than profits. Today, we continue his legacy in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIF E W E L L P LA N N E D.

14 2017 - 2018 SEASON • BAD JEWS

Playwright Joshua Harmon said, "I think a seed for this play was planted in college when I attended a Yom Hashoah service. I’d been to many such services in my childhood, and at each one, a survivor would speak about her experiences, which was always powerful. But at this particular service, the theme was “Grandchildren of Survivors.” Instead of hearing from someone older, speaking English with a thick foreign accent, my peers got up and spoke about their grandparents’ experiences. I found the event strangely unmoving. It forced me to reckon with questions about how my generation would remember the Holocaust, and whether or not we’re prepared to handle that responsibility. It probably laid the groundwork for this play."

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR AMY RESNICK

My Aunt Helen is a survivor. She was one of the hidden children in France and she is alive today because a small hamlet of brave people in the mountains of France hid her in the cellar beneath the orchard. Helen was 6 years old. For the last decade, she has begun to tell her story in schools, so that young people can hear her story firsthand. And, I feel I have a deep responsibility to keep her story alive. Why? In hopes that it will never happen again. That we will know the signs, that we will speak up for other human beings, animals, all life. I believe that we cannot move forward as a civilization as long as there is a sanctioned scapegoat. This play is about four young adults all twenty-five and under, a time when we search for meaning, identity, love, our place in the world. In many ways, it is a view into their world. The playwright admits his play “comes from a very personal place." But Harmon won’t elucidate on what he thinks Bad Jews is about. “My job as the writer,” he insists, “is to tell a story and then get out of its way. What resonates with the audience is for them to discover for themselves, not for me to dictate.” So, welcome to the Upper West Side NY, sick back and enjoy, in the words of Joshua Harmon, "this crazy little Jewish play." Thank you, Joshua Harmon for writing this play. Thank you to you, our audience. You mean the world to us. - Amy Resnick, Director

Her recent credits include Denise in STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR, Watchman/ensemble in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, and ensemble in THE ROYALE, and acted in the 21st Century Voices Festival. This season, American Stage asked our community to be a part of the ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ movement. To honor our commitment to the community, we partnered with seven talented local artists to create visual interpretations of the plays in our season. As an extension of our Youth Initiative – UNDER 20 Passport, American Stage partnered Tracy Copes with 16-year-old Chancellor Joyer for a mentorship with our final artist collaboration of the season. To inspire and immerse visual artists in the experience of creating a production, each artist was invited to participate in the rehearsal process. This informs the creation of a unique 24” x 36” original signature artwork to be displayed in our lobby.

FEATURED VISUAL ARTISTS

Artists Supporting Artists

These signature pieces are then donated to American Stage as a fundraiser toward the 40 FORWARD campaign. Learn more about how to participate in the lobby. Visit americanstage.org/BID to view all of the signature pieces created this season. American Stage donated their gallery space to each visual artist for an exhibition through the run of each partner production to promote and support each artist’s business.

Featured Visual Artists Thank you to the talented visual artist Tracy Copes who, along with professional photographer Joey Clay, and the American Stage in-house design team created the production artwork for this production. "For me, the WE THE PEOPLE theme brings to mind the strength and resiliency of Americans and really humans in general and a coming together of all people, regardless of their race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. "We the people" is a bold statement of solidarity." - Tracy Copes TRACY COPES is a multi-media artist, photographer and full-time graphic designer. Tracy’s work can be found in a myriad of public and private art collections and has been seen in numerous exhibitions worldwide. Tracy is a transplant from the Northeast and currently lives in Tampa with her kids, cats, dogs, fish, lizards and very patient partner. CHANCELLOR JOYER is a visual artist going into his junior year at Wesley Chapel High School. He’s active in organizations such as NAHS (National Art Honors Society). He’s been featured in several group shows with artists 20-30 years his senior and done commission work for the past year.

WE THE PEOPLE  ART!

Come together as we celebrate the featured visual artists. Tracy Copes & Chancellor Joyer will present a Gallery Show through August 6th in our lobby. Visit concessions or the box office to purchase. Artist Meet & Greet Reception: Friday, July 20 @ 7PM Proceeds benefit American Stage & visual artists, Tracy Copes & Chancellor Joyer.
