Inspire.
In a word, Raymond James believes in the transformative power of the arts. Perhaps the most meaningful thing you can do with success is share it. And when you do that with care and conviction, giving can be an art form – one Raymond James has been practicing since 1962. Today, we carry on the charitable legacy of our founder Bob James in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIFE WELL PLANNED.
Raymond James is proud to support the American Stage Theatre Company.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
An English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist, Shakespeare is often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
“
rows, some with traps.” Some Cupid kills with ar - Hero, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, which has stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS
With the exception of the tragic love story ROMEO AND JULIET, William Shakespeare's first plays were mostly histories. HENRY VI (Parts I, II and III), RICHARD II, HENRY V, and JULIUS CAESAR. Shakespeare also wrote several comedies during his early period: the witty romance A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, the romantic MERCHANT OF VENICE, the charming AS YOU LIKE IT and TWELFTH NIGHT, and the wit and wordplay of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. It was in William Shakespeare's later period, after 1600, that he wrote the tragedies HAMLET, OTHELLO, KING LEAR and MACBETH. In William Shakespeare's final period, he wrote several tragicomedies. Among these are CYMBELINE, THE WINTER'S TALE and THE TEMPEST. Though graver in tone than the comedies, they are not the dark tragedies of KING LEAR or MACBETH because they end with reconciliation and forgiveness.
THE LANGUAGE OF SHAKESPEARE
Shakespeare, along with many other playwrights of his time, often wrote in verse - a form of poetry used in playwriting. Shakespeare wrote most of the verse in his plays in iambic pentameter, a style consisting of ten syllables per line – five metrical feet, each consisting of one unstressed and one stressed syllable. There are many examples of Shakespeare breaking from form, or breaking the rules of iambic pentameter. Shakespeare often did this to emphasize characters’ uncertainty, distress or excitement. Interestingly, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING is one of Shakespeare's prose-heaviest plays, at 71% prose to only 29% verse. (Only THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, 86% prose, has more).

This season, American Stage asks our community to be a part of the ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ movement. To honor our commitment to the community, we have partnered with seven talented local artists to create visual interpretations of the plays in our season. To inspire and immerse visual artists in the experience of creating a production, each artist was invited to participate in the rehearsal process. This informs the creation of a unique 24” x 36” original signature artwork to be displayed in our lobby. These signature pieces are then donated to American Stage as a fundraiser toward the 40 FORWARD campaign. Visit americanstage.org/BID to participate.
FEATURED VISUAL ARTIST
Artists Supporting Artists
American Stage is donating their gallery space to each visual artist for an exhibition through the run of each partner production to promote and support each artist’s business.
Featured Visual Artist
Thank you to the talented visual artist Laura Spencer who, along with professional photographer Joey Clay, and the American Stage in-house design team created the production artwork for MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. "Working with American Stage has been an incredibly meaningful experience for me. As a former student of Pinellas County Center for the Arts (Gibbs High School), collaboration between various arts disciplines has been a part of my creative process for many years, providing endless sources of inspiration and opportunity to get out of my creative comfort zone; meeting like-minds and learning new ways to innovate design." - Laura Spencer LAURA SPENCER is an Illustrator and Graphic Designer hailing from the blooming art community of St. Petersburg, Florida. In her pursuit to make Art and Design a lifelong career, Laura continually seeks opportunities to participate in gallery shows, as well as organize large art and cultural events. A former Art Director for Bealls Department Stores, Laura has finally landed the job of her dreams as Illustrator and Graphic Design for the design build firm - Creative Arts Unlimited, Inc. (Pinellas Park, Florida) - creating engaging environments and interactive experiences for museums, health care, and retail spaces. She continues to freelance design and illustrate, while living in a creaky old Bungalow with her black cat and hordes of art supplies.
WE THE PEOPLE ART!
Come together as we celebrate MUCH ADO's featured visual artist. Laura Spencer with George Retkes will present a Gallery Show throughout the run of the production in our lobby. Visit concessions or the box office to purchase. Artist Meet & Greet Reception: Friday, Nov 17 @ 6PM
Proceeds benefit American Stage & visual artists Laura Spencer, and George Retkes.
