AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR MODERN PLAYWRIGHT Mainstage Series Presented By:

Co-Sponsors: Beth A. Houghton & Scott K. Wagman Willi Rudowsky & Hal Freedman

AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE Dear Friends of American Stage, In an era that can often seem more surreal than sublime, the 2019-2020 American Stage Mainstage Series explores the American spirit, our pursuit of happiness, our resiliency, and our unrelenting hope in AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE. Our Mainstage season continues with one of modern theatre's most popular playwrights, Lauren Gunderson, shining a light on several important, but little-known women who broke new scientific ground and gender barriers in SILENT SKY, an inspiring journey through space and time as a female astronomer defies pre-suffrage America. In January, playwright Dominique Morisseau's (last season's PIPELINE) powerful play, SKELETON CREW, gives blue-collar America a vibrantly honest voice in a Detroit auto plant during the Great Recession. In the World Premiere of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS, written by St. Pete’s own Natalie Symons, we meet two ordinary, awkward social misfits who hilariously stumble together toward something extraordinary. Later, Joshua Harmon’s (BAD JEWS) razorsharp wit returns to our stage a searing dark comedy about college, race and privilege in ADMISSIONS. We conclude our dreamscape with the 19-20 American Legacy Series selection, the Tony-Award winning rock musical about an American family, trying to find stable ground in NEXT TO NORMAL.

16 2019 - 2020 SEASON • SILENT SKY

I love scanning the skies at night, spotting shooting stars and satellites. It’s curiously moving. Who hasn’t gazed up at the night sky and wondered about their role in this life? I have fond memories of looking through a telescope with my family as a kid: identifying planets, wishing on the evening star, musing about aliens and God all at the same time. To this day, I love that sense of wonder, awe and smallness that comes with stargazing.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR, KRISTIN CLIPPARD

Most people don’t know who Henrietta Swan Leavitt was or what she did for astronomy. Probably because when she was a “computer” working at the Harvard Observatory, she and her female colleagues were not allowed to look through the Great Refractor telescope, let alone conduct their own research. She was paid very little for tedious work measuring color, position and brightness of stars from glass plates and then recording the data. Her contributions to scientific history where dwarfed by later findings until contemporary writers, such as Lauren Gunderson, took up her story. Leavitt is credited with observations of Variable Cepheid stars that produced her Period-Luminosity Relation (which basically links luminosity to period of pulsation). Scientists used this discovery as a “standard candle” that could measure the distance between the stars. Her discovery came at the perfect time because a hot debate was going on amongst astronomers: Do other galaxies exist outside our own? Men like Ejnar Hertzsprung, George Lemaitre and Edwin Hubble used the relation in their breakthrough work. With a resounding yes, the astronomical community came to recognize that the Milky Way is indeed one among many galaxies in a vast, expanding universe. Science and Faith. Math and Music. Light and Love. These things are intertwined in our play and coexist in the heart of our unlikely heroine. Henri’s courageous journey is one of perseverance and hope. She knew she had something important to contribute and didn’t give up even when family tragedy, illness or personal hardships thwarted her. She defined her own purpose and we are grateful for it. If you learn one thing about this extraordinary astronomer, I hope you will learn that her continuous hard work led to audacious innovations. That kind of inspiration is a priceless reminder of our own powerful contributions to the world around us. Thank you for joining us on this dreamy dance into the stars and we wish you an infinitely joyous holiday season. Enjoy the show!

-Kristin Clippard, Director of SILENT SKY

THE REAL WOMEN OF SILENT SKY

THE REAL WOMEN OF SILENT SKY "In our troubled days it is good to have something outside our planet, something fine and distant for comfort."-Annie Jump Cannon

HENRIETTA LEAVITT 1868 - 1921

Henrietta Leavitt was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the daughter of a Congregational minister. She attended Oberlin College and the Society for Collegiate Instruction of Women (now Radcliffe College). As a senior in 1892, Leavitt discovered astronomy. After graduation she took another course in it, but then spent several years at home when she suffered a serious illness that left her severely deaf. She hadn't forgotten about astronomy, though. She volunteered at the Harvard College Observatory in 1895. Seven years later she was appointed to the permanent staff by director Charles Pickering. During her career, Leavitt discovered more than 2,400 variable stars, about half of the known total in her day. These stars change from bright to dim and back fairly regularly. Leavitt's work with variable stars led to her most important contribution to the field: the cepheid variable period-luminosity relationship. By intense observation of a certain class of variable star, the cepheids, Leavitt discovered a direct correlation between the time it took a star to go from bright to dim to how bright it actually was. Knowing this relationship helped other astronomers, such as Edwin Hubble, to make their own groundbreaking discoveries. Leavitt also developed a standard of photographic measurements that was accepted by the International Committee on Photographic Magnitudes in 1913, and called the Harvard Standard. To do this she used 299 plates from 13 telescopes and used logarithmic equations to order stars over 17 magnitudes of brightness. She continued refining and enlarging upon this work throughout her life despite not being allowed to pursue her own topics of study. She worked at the Harvard College Observatory until her death from cancer in 1921.

ANNIE JUMP CANNON 1863-1941

Annie Jump Cannon’s interest in astronomy began when her mother taught her the constellations. In 1894 she became a “special student” of astronomy at Radcliffe Women’s College at Harvard giving her access to the Harvard College Observatory. By 1907 she had received her master’s degree from Wellesley College, one of the top schools for women at the time. In 1896 Cannon was hired to work with Edward Charles Pickering, director of Harvard College Observatory. She and other women who worked there were referred to as “computers” because they measured the brightness, positions, and spectra of hundreds of thousands of stars imaged on glass plates. Between 1911 and 1915, she classified 5,000 stars a month. To help with the process, she developed her own scheme, which resulted in the famous OBAFGKM classification that is still used today. The organization was later understood to reflect stellar temperatures: O stars are hot and blue while M stars are cool and red stars. Cannon’s hard work earned her numerous academic honors, several prizes, and many “firsts”— including the first woman recipient of an honorary doctorate from Oxford. 18 2019 - 2020 SEASON • SILENT SKY

1857 -1911

Born on 15 May 1857 in Dundee, Scotland, Williamina Paton Stevens Fleming was a pioneering astronomer who devised a stellar classification system and discovered the Horsehead Nebula. In 1878 she immigrated to the US with her husband, who then abandoned her when she became pregnant. To support herself and her child, Fleming went to work as a maid in 1879 in the home of Edward Pickering, director of the Harvard College Observatory. Within two years Pickering hired her to work at the observatory as a human computer, part of a famed team of women known as the Harvard computers. There Fleming analyzed data about stellar spectra recorded on photographic plates. Over the next three decades, she developed a new stellar classification system and cataloged more than 10 000 stars. She discovered hundreds of variable stars, 10 novae, and 52 nebulae, including the Horsehead Nebula. And she was among the first to recognize the existence of white dwarfs. Fleming hired and supervised dozens of fellow female computers, including Annie Jump Cannon, Henrietta Swan Leavitt, and Antonia Maury, who became accomplished astronomers in their own right.

THE REAL WOMEN OF SILENT SKY

WILLIAMINA FLEMING

In 1899 Fleming was given the title of curator of astronomical photographs at Harvard. In 1906 she became the first American woman to be made an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society of London. Fraknoi, A. (2019, April). Women in Astronomy: An Introductory Resource Guide. AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE

SKELETON CREW By Dominique Morisseau JAN 22 - FEB 23, 2020

"Last season American Stage audiences were riveted by the work of MacArthur Genius Award-Winning playwright, Dominique Morriesau, with our production of PIPELINE. This season, Morriseau will take us to the heart of America’s motor city with SKELETON CREW. Set in the playwrights’ beloved hometown of Detroit at the start of the Great Recession, SKELETON CREW combines heartbreak with Morrisseau's signature biting humor in this moving homage to the American blue collar worker." - Stephanie Gularte, CEO/Producing Artistic Director
