AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE
Dear Friends of American Stage,
In an era that can often seem more surreal than sublime, the 2019-2020 American Stage Mainstage Series explores the American spirit, our pursuit of happiness, our resiliency, and our unrelenting hope in AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE. Our Mainstage season continues with the world premiere of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS, written by St. Pete’s own Natalie Symons, where we meet two ordinary, awkward social misfits who hilariously stumble together toward something extraordinary. There is something particularly special about collaborating with a writer and a creative team on a brand new play. The playwright entrusts a team of artists with her work. The director is the first to stage and sculpt the story. The designers are the first to create the physical world of the play. The actors are the first to breathe life into its characters. And the audience is the first to transform the work into a dynamic, visceral shared experience that only live theatre can offer. American Stage is so grateful to have been a part of the journey of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS since its very first intimate table reading a year and a half ago. Our team is proud to present the world premiere of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS for what will be the very first, but certainly not the last, live production. Later, Joshua Harmon’s (BAD JEWS) razor-sharp wit returns to our stage with a searing dark comedy about college, race and privilege in ADMISSIONS, American Stage's co-production with Capital Stage Company in California. And over the summer, we conclude our dreamscape with the 19-20 American Legacy Series selection, the powerful Tony Award winning rock musical about an American family trying to find stable ground in NEXT TO NORMAL. 2
2019 - 2020 SEASON • THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS
Like the American spirit, the current Mainstage season is rambunctious, ambitious, defiant, heartfelt, and optimistic, introducing characters moving through the strange and incredible journey of the American experience. If a dreamscape is a surreal fantasy, AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE is an impassioned adventure toward an ideal that always feels within reach. Join us and experience AN AMERICAN DREAMSCAPE, American Stage's 2019-2020 season full of motion, music and moments of awe. I look forward to seeing you at the theatre!

Writing a Director’s Note is always a daunting task for me. How do I sum up my feelings toward this play in under 500 words? What should I choose to bring to the forefront of the audience’s mind from this rich world and these elaborate lives that have been so carefully created? Especially in a story as new and with as much heart as this one. But I’ll give it my best shot!
DIRECTOR'S NOTE
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR, CHRIS CRAWFORD
I find this play to be so relatable. I see myself in it. I see my family and friends in it. Because, at its core, THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS is a play about what it means to be a person. A human being. For me, this play is about love, loss, laughter, loneliness, the fear of letting go, and the magic of simple human connection. We all need to be seen, to feel known, to feel like we matter. It’s one of our most basic human needs. We crave it. And, for most of us, we know what it feels like, at times, to not receive it. It can make us feel alienated or rejected. Awkward, shy or even ashamed. It can make us feel so afraid of what comes next that it becomes hard for us to carry on. In THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS, Natalie Symons has given us such a hauntingly beautiful example of what it means to feel forgotten and alone, but she also offers a magnificent illustration of the healing power of love and kindness. And I think that’s the lesson to be learned here. In a time when being polarizing is popular, we often forget about those with quieter voices. We forget that everyone has a struggle of their own. And, oftentimes, we forget to love each other in spite of our occasionally differing views. Mabel says, “Be careful out there, man. I can’t see things too good, but even blind folks can see that the world is hard.” And she’s right. The world can be hard. And it’s in those hard times that we all need to be “noticed” the most. It has been such an honor to play a small part in breathing life into this brand new story. This play inspires me to go out and live my life to the fullest. It makes me laugh (a lot). Mostly though, it encourages me to really see others and to not be afraid to stop and listen to their stories. Because, in the end, we all have a story to tell. – Chris Crawford, Director of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS

PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTE
A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT:
NATALIE SYMONS
I wish I could remember the exact moment that the idea for THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS came to me. I honestly considered making something up that would make me sound clever or profound. The truth is I’m not entirely sure where it came from. And when asked the inevitable question, I struggle to articulate it. Yet, as I sit down to write this, I’m flooded with emotion because I know this is my most personal play and there is so much of me and of my quirky and wonderful family in it. I grew up in Buffalo, and this may sound shocking but: Buffalo is the greatest city on Earth. It’s also the only place where people laugh as hard, as often and as loudly as I do. My dad always said it’s the hard, cold winters that make the people so warm. This is a play about home, and about how so many of us struggle in some way to hold on to a sense of home and family when it slips away from us. It’s about how we attempt to hold on to the people that we love the most, even when we know we should let them go. It’s about the desperation to rescue our children — no matter how old they are — from pain. It’s about finding an unexpected family as we try to hold on to the past. And as all Buffalonians could attest, it’s about the undeniable healing power of laughter. I dedicate this play to anyone who has ever felt alone, to anyone longing to find family, and to anyone who wants to go home again. But mostly this play is for my parents, who let me cry and taught me to laugh. – Natalie Symons, Playwright of THE PEOPLE DOWNSTAIRS
