2017 Highlights
2017 was one of the best years in America SCORES New York history! We started off our year strong with our first game day in early September featuring three new schools: PS 98, PS 4, and, our first ever school in Brooklyn, PS 249. These game days were exciting and elevated by our skilled poet-athletes. In November, we held our annual Poetry SLAM! and it was our biggest yet! Poet-athletes from all over New York City gathered to recite poems that they worked on throughout the Fall in front of their peers, families, and coaches! We continued our celebraton of poetry with our Pancakes and Poetry event in January, recognizing some of our outstanding poet-athletes from SLAM and giving them the opportunity to discuss their poetry with the SCORES community. We kept busy throughout the winter months with our Winter Camp sessions and Winter SCORES Cup, as well as the promise of an exciting Spring! We started the new season with high-energy game days and our new financial literacy program, One Hen Academy. We even hosted our first high school tournament with America SCORES alumni! We ended a busy spring season with our annual Jamboree! at Columbia University Football Stadium, an incredibly spacious location that was perfect for our growing group of poet-athletes. We continued after the end of the school year, running a summer program for our poet-athletes with a new location in Inwood, and we held our annual SCORES Cup at Pier 40, where we hosted 40 teams and almost 600 players, making it New York City’s largest corporate-charity soccer tournament. Expansion is wonderful, but program quality must follow suit: ASNY students are showing better commitment to their education, improvements in physical and emotional health, and becoming more active community members! All in all, 2017 was a groundbreaking year for America SCORES New York, and we cannot wait to see what 2018 has in store!
