EASTERN WHITE PINE From the colonial homes of early settlers to contemporary lofts in urban settings, Eastern White Pine is regarded as America’s most time-honored wood for wide plank floors. Each board, hand selected from the heart of the region’s most mature pines, delivers a signature grain profile, dense and assertive, with subtle, nature-laced knots. While strong and durable, the Eastern White Pine is a wood that wears in over time, enhancing the unique character of one’s home. It’s a piece of Americana. It’s folk art for your floor.

optimum growing environement We harvest our wood from sustainable forests in the finest growing regions for each species of tree. Still, only certain trees meet our standards and pass our meticulous inspection. Our pine is sourced exclusively from cold, northeastern climates where they age patiently, reaching a richer level of maturity. This natural process provides the wood with tighter, tougher grain lines, making our wood more durable than others of the same species. Artisan woodworking and proprietary stains further ensure the integrity of our planks.

LONGLEAF HEART PINE Heart Pine, heralded for its use during the American Industrial Revolution, is enjoying a renaissance. Cut from the heart of the timber, this wood provides a hardness rivaling oak with a warm patina and rich colors ranging from pumpkin and amber to darker, more modern hues. And our Longleaf Heart Pine floors are available in a variety of grades, each with their own subtle characteristics. Our Heirloom cut offers a more formal wood surface attributed to its tight knots and narrow, vertical grains, whereas our Original cut provides a more rustic appearance, replete with wider lines, extravagant knots, and cathedral style wood patterns. The alluring grain lines and genteel charm that once made this wood popular for plantation homes are being rediscovered in casual and formal homes across the country. It’s a look equally at home with a mint julep or a martini served dry.

WHITE OAK This is a hard, resilient wood with nutty brown hues and dramatic grain features that range from simple and sleek to intricate swirls. Once used to make wine barrels, the dense fibers of this popular wood make for a durable floor with a versatile look, depending on the effect you’re trying to achieve. Casual, formal, or contemporary, White Oak will provide the perfect compliment to any design scheme. And like a vintage wine, it only gets better with age.

each board inspected one at a time When we say that we craft our floors one board at a time, that’s exactly what we mean. Once the boards arrive at our mill, our woodworkers will scrutinize each one to determine which side better represents the full potential of the plank. The other side will be milled with stress relievers in order to further increase the board’s stability. Then, once the milling process is complete, each board will again be subjected to the critical eyes of our craftsmen. If they find any flaws or imperfections after milling, the board will be discarded and recycled for other use. So, from the time one of our rough-sawn boards arrives at our mill to the time the finished floor reaches one of our customers, it will have come under the demanding scrutiny of at least half-dozen different people, even more depending on how it is finished.

HICKORY If trees portrayed human temperaments Hickory would be the envy of the species. Hickory is tough and handsome, with a tensile strength that rivals steel and a surface appearance long admired by woodworking purists and cabinetmakers. Our Hickory is sourced exclusively from the upper reaches of the Appalachian Forest, where the short summers and cool climate provide for its substantial heartwood content. When hand crafted by our expert woodworkers, the clear yellows and rich brown heartwood patterns naturally contrast to create a striking floor that commands attention in any formal or casual setting. Hickory is a show-stopper. It’s the rugged bull rider who can still mosey around the most refined crowds.

While subject to the natural characteristics distinct to each wood species, they can be nurtured and enhanced under the skillful care of our artisan woodworkers. At Carlisle, each plank receives individual attention to ensure that we achieve its full potential, yet it is still considered in respect to the totality of the floor we’re striving to create. Each piece works in concert with one another – a sum that is full of independently beautiful parts.

WALNUT While it may have an unassuming name, Walnut is not an understated wood. In fact, there is no other wood quite like it. Walnut is a sumptuous species with rich, chocolate hues, surprising purple undertones, and complex grain patterns, making for a spectacular floor with or without stain. And with a beauty that lends itself to cabinetry work, and a fortitude that made it a popular choice for gunstocks and old airplane propellers, Walnut is one of the most attractive, yet resilient woods available. Our handcrafted planks are particularly striking due to their exceptional lengths, widths and heartwood content: the result of ideal Midwestern growing conditions, where Walnut is sustainably harvested.

RED OAK

30

wideplankflooring.com

red oak Red Oak sometimes gets a bum rap due to cheap strip flooring that comes from warmer climates, where it grows too fast resulting in an underdeveloped grain. It’s unfortunate, really, because Red Oak that has been allowed to mature patiently in cooler climates produces a striking floor that can be as rustic or modern as you wish to make it. At Carlisle, our Red Oak is sustainably sourced from the Northern Appalachians, where gradual growth produces tight, consistent grain; exceptional heartwood; and maximum widths and lengths. We’d provide it with a PR consultant, but one look at a Carlisle floor is sufficient to dispel any slanderous rumors regarding Red Oak.

best cut of wood

designidea Consider a tightly grained wood, such as Red Oak, for a more formal or traditional setting. The lower knot content offers a refined feel that will add enduring elegance to your home.

It’s simple, really. The best floor planks come from the best trees found in the finest, most sustainable tree farms for each species. Why? It really comes down to the heart content found in a tree trunk. Heartwood represents the densest vertical grain of the tree and contains far less moisture than the outer “sap” wood. These two factors give it superior strength and long-term stability as well as the rich color, original character, and smooth stain absorption that woodworkers have celebrated for centuries. While the early settlers knew the value in using heartwood, very few contemporary floors are comprised exclusively of this precious part of the tree. At Carlisle, we insist on nothing else. And only harvest our trees from sources known for their exceptional heart content.

BIRCH

32

wideplankflooring.com

birch Simply put: Birch is beautiful. Stunning, really; with blonde outer edges that frame an amber center and varying grain patterns that range from delicate swirls to highly figured flame. The unique qualities that make Birch a popular wood for premium floors also attract high-end cabinetry makers and furniture craftsmen. While naturally blonde, this wood won’t darken with age, yet still wears darker stains exceptionally well, allowing for a variety of design styles. At Carlisle, our Birch wood contains more dramatic heartwood than its contemporaries because it is sawn from fully mature trees slowly grown and sustainably harvested in Northern New England. It’s a signature style floor, one that’s almost impossible to stop admiring.

designtip environmental sustainability Like a fresh summer breeze, Birch’s lively grain character and bright surface tones revive darker spaces in your home, filling them with vibrant life.

At Carlisle, we are advocates for artistic architecture as well as staunch stewards for environmental sustainability. We aim to build beautiful floors that last forever without causing any detriment to our esteemed forests. Therefore, we work exclusively with a small, carefully selected group of timber growers who uphold the highest standards of sustainability. We never contract with sawmills that clear cut trees. In fact, due to our meticulous standards, only one tree for every five acres passes our inspection, which ensures that we’ll never clear a whole tree stand, allowing younger trees to mature.

BROWN MAPLE/ WHITE MAPLE

34

wideplankflooring.com

maple Simple. Clean. Elegant. The appealing characteristics of White Maple are virtually endless, which is why it rivals Oak as one of the most popular choices for wood flooring. It is a hard, durable wood; frequently used for gym floors, which means that it’s exceptionally resilient. Yet it has a softer, gentler side with flowing grains and occasional swirls making it a fashionable choice for a variety of traditional and contemporary settings. Our design consultants will work with you to help determine whether to stay Au Naturale or if one of our custom stains will best fit your design scheme.

long lasting floors

designtip The subtle grain patterns found in Maple planks make for a versatile floor, much like a blank canvas, that can accommodate a variety of design styles.

To say that our wood is solid is an understatement. Sure, we care that our plank floors are beautiful, but it’s equally important to us that they are practical. That they last. That they endure for the lifetime of one’s home. The early New England settlers did not have time for frequent floor repair, so they used the widest, longest boards available, cut from the center, or heart, of the tree, because they knew they would be less likely to warp or shrink. We apply these same time-honored traditions today. Over time, a Carlisle floor will begin to take on the characteristics of ones home, assuming the wear patterns of its owner much like a priceless pair of leather boots. Yet, with proper maintenance, these floors will remain in place for centuries to come, a legacy that can be passed from one generation to the next.

CHERRY

36

wideplankflooring.com

cherry Ah, Cherry wood. A true classic; celebrated for it’s warm, if not fiery, amber hues. Cherry was once favored by some of the finest Early American furniture makers and interior panel designers who appreciated its polished, glowing red appearance. As a hardwood flooring material, it is unique in that its lustrous hues will darken a bit as it ages, ultimately maturing to a rich, burnished auburn color. The subtle, yet distinctive flowing grain patterns and it’s inviting warmth have made, and continue to make, Cherry wood one of our most popular wide plank floors. And like George Washington, about this, we cannot lie.

designtip Planks can be cut in uniform, or more varied widths, depending on the look you’re trying to achieve. Planks of the same size create a simple, seamless aesthetic, whereas varied widths work within a more natural and organic design scheme.

brushed texture It may be paradoxical, perhaps, but Carlisle is creating new technologies to reproduce the nostalgic appearance of older, time-worn floors. Such as with brushing, a recent process applied to our wood planks, which creates a softer aesthetic by highlighting the depth in the premium heartwood. While running wood planks under a specially designed series of abrasive brushes, Carlisle craftsmen remove the softer spring growth wood grains, leaving behind the hard summer growth grains, creating a textured, three-dimensional wood surface. It’s new age innovation delivering old-world aesthetics. Just one of many distressing options offered by our custom design group.

ASH

38

wideplankflooring.com

ash Ash has a storied history of utility in America. It is the traditional wood used to create bats for America’s pastime. It was also utilized by Native Americans for bows, arrows, and basket weaving. While durable, with tight, dense fibers, it is the unique elasticity of Ash wood that allows for its versatile use. From an aesthetic standpoint, Ash is prized for its interesting grain patterns and striking hues, where the cream-colored and light almond outer portions of the tree perfectly compliment the rich nutty brown heartwood. Whether left natural or stained, Ash offers a dramatic option for environments ranging from traditional homes to beachside bungalows to refurbished urban lofts.

installation over radiant heat or concrete

designtip With floors this beautiful, there is no need for the extra expense and maintenance of a large area rug. Floors comprised of striking wood species, like Ash, are so stunning it would almost be a shame to conceal them.

Our exceptionally long and wide plank floor boards are not only aesthetically pleasing, they are practical as well, particularly when it comes to installations over radiant heat or concrete slab foundations. Natural wood is organic. It breathes, it moves. This can become problematic when using inferior strip flooring over surfaces that contain moisture. At Carlisle, our plank boards are cut from heartwood, which has a lower moisture count than cuts from the outer layers, making them more receptive to our drying process, which is the most stringent in the industry. We air dry all of our wood for up to one year before kiln drying the planks in small batches for maximum strength and stability. We have been confidently installing wood flooring over every type of radiant heat system and concrete surface for over forty years. When properly installed, our planks stay put.

antique wood This young country already has a rich history; a story that continues to unfold through the buildings and homes where early developers once worked so hard to pave the path before us. There is a bridge between these two worlds, one we can still touch and experience just as our ancestors did. It is in the things they built. The things they built to last. Carlisle is the top supplier of FSC Antique Reclaimed wood in North America, repurposing the most salvageable selections from our storied yesteryears. When you walk on one of these remarkable floors, it’s as though you can recount it’s past. It is a rich, warm comfort that only comes through the passage of time, with a character that invites you to celebrate its imperfections – for every nail hole, every stain, every knot and split reflects an enduring memory which commands genuine admiration and deference. When you purchase Carlisle Antique Reclaimed wood, you’re not just a customer. You’re a custodian.

fsc certification It’s important to realize that not all reclaimed wood is procured, processed and resold in the same manner. Carlisle has worked to achieve 100% Post Consumer Antique Reclaimed Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This means that every single LEED credit qualifying Carlisle board is a genuine antique and has been in our care from the dismantling process to the moment it is resold. To help our customers fully appreciate the history behind their floors, each order comes with a commemorative personalized portfolio, handmade in Vermont, which recounts the complete history of the wood: where it was procured, the species it represents, and the building it came from.

PATTERNED

patterned The artistry involved in making parquet flooring first emerged during the Baroque era of the early 1600’s. Then, only the most esteemed institutions and affluent individuals could afford these decadent floors. Now, Carlisle is making the elegant look of parquet available to a wider range of discerning homeowners who appreciate the unique appearance of patterned floors. Our Custom Shop offers parquet in a variety of woods and classic designs, such as chevron, herringbone and Versailles. We can also work with you to create your own unique design, including room borders and dramatic focal points. Parquet is a passion of ours. It’s where we get to don our fedoras and return to a classic era of artistic inspiration.

distinguished design

designtip From Versailles to the White House, patterned floors are synonymous with stateliness. A Carlisle patterned floor brings tailored luxury into your residence.

There are many ways to approach the assembly of a patterned floor. We offer several options, depending on the specific look you’re going for. One option is a patterned floor that comes preassembled in sections that are either pre-finished or plain. This floor is less labor intensive, suitable for people who desire a classic, pre-existing design, such as chevron or Versailles. Another option includes using finished or unfinished individual pieces, which allows us to integrate contrasting textures, incorporate accents comprised of reclaimed antique woods, design new patterns, and/or consider dramatic focal points. While some of the boards used for our patterned floors are smaller than our custom wide planks, they all come from the same premium quality heartwood that Carlisle is renowned for, ensuring exceptional stability, character, and beauty. So, whether it’s simply a custom border or a sweeping floor-scape, the skilled craftsman in our Custom Shop will help design the type of patterned floor that can become the centerpiece of your home.

Carlisle has been hand crafting America’s most remarkable wide plank floors for over 40 years. And over that time our basic formula hasn’t changed. Treat each tree, and customer, with the respect and individual attention that they deserve. Just as no two trees are exactly alike, there are no two customers who seek the exact same floor. We like that, and we promise to keep making floors that are as wonderful and original as their owners. It’s our passion. It’s what gets us up in the morning, and keeps us from complaining about the countless splinters that we’ve accumulated over these many years. Trees are too often overlooked; its timber taken for granted. Their abundance dulls us to their splendid beauty and unrivaled utility. But when you stop and think about the role trees play in our lives, how they are responsible for the very air we breathe, you gain a newfound appreciation for these noble creations, and the many ways in which they enrich our world. Every tree has a story to tell if you stop long enough to listen. Many live for hundreds of years, through countless seasons, providing a safe haven for a variety of life forms, as they stand, silently swaying above us, in stoic observation of this ever-evolving world. The dramas that unfold during the life of a tree are told through the wood we procure. A check in the wood tells of a furious windstorm. A knot marks the location of a branch where a family of songbirds

once raised their young. Grain lines recount the years back to the late 1800’s and tell of the conditions in which the tree once thrived, through periods of plenty, or dry, arid eras that taxed the local farmers of the time. At Carlisle, we find our calling in preserving the history told through these great trees. In bringing their stories to life and passing them on for future generations to enjoy. When considering a Carlisle floor, we urge you to take a moment to pay attention to the characteristics unique to each plank. Appreciate the subtle significance found in the color variations and complex grain patterns. Imagine the seasons of extreme weather and peaceful serenity that the tree once endured. Consider yourself, for a moment, more than a customer. Consider yourself a custodian.

Hand Selecting Tree Most American hardwood trees are highly adaptive. You’ll find them in one form or another all the way from Canada to Florida and Texas. But it is primarily in New England, the upper Midwest, the Ohio River Valley and portions of the Appalachians where cool, short summers allow these trees to slowly grow to their maximum heights and circumferences. This translates into tighter, denser grains and optimum beauty for woodworking, cabinetry and especially wide plank flooring.

One Board at a Time To us, there’s more to manufacturing floors than using the highest quality wood, which we do: tightly grained heartwood cut from the core of the country’s finest trees. But, have you ever stopped and studied a piece of beautiful fresh-milled wood? Not just admired it, but really studied it? What story does the grain tell you? Do you notice the natural color variations? The subtle imperfections? Our entire business is built upon continually, and passionately, studying wood. We’ll often shut down the big machines and gather around a board we’re milling for a particular job, and just talk about it. Talk about what that particular species of wood, and the manner in which we treat it, will ultimately mean to that individual customer. It’s a system with built-in checks and balances. For, from the time one of our rough-sawn boards arrives at our mill to the time the finished floor reaches one of our customers, it will have come under the demanding scrutiny of more than a dozen different people — sometimes many more than that, depending on how it is finished. Each board is unique. And each board has it’s own bit of character to add to a completed floor.

Surface Textures

Every Carlisle wide plank floor is individually crafted by hand to deliver the exact look desired by each customer. For those seeking an authentic, old-world look, we offer a selection of hand distressing options that add the appearance of age. Hand scraped treatments can be used to create genuine inconsistencies between the board seams or provide a primitive, hand-planed appearance. Or we can treat the floor with fabricated foot traffic, recreating the wizened look of an age-worn room.

50

wideplankflooring.com

Many of the floors installed centuries ago were never planed or scraped smooth prior to installation. Without sanding machines the process of smoothing a board was very difficult and time consuming so many people decided to smooth a majority of the board, but often left the deeper original saw marks in the face of the board, to save time. Over the years these saw marks became worn smooth thru foot traffic, but they remained as undulations in the board….an eternal reminder of a bent tooth in the original sawyer’s band saw.

BRUSHED This is our most subtle surface treatment. Using brushes, craftsmen de-gloss and “un-smooth” our boards in order to give them a soft and gently worn texture with very fine brush markings. This technique can be combined easily with any of our other surface treatments with dramatic results. Shown: Wire-Brushed White Oak Living Room

FOOT WORN

HIT OR MISS

As floors are walked on, the softer grains are worn away more quickly than the denser grains, creating distinctive undulating patterns. Also, if boards are uneven in height, the taller boards will show more foot wear. Using custom tools, our craftsmen recreate these subtle patterns typical of Colonial floors that have been trod upon for centuries.

Our mission is to match each piece of wood with the proper stain for the particular species while taking into account your specific design scheme. Pre-finished Floors

Like everything we do, when it comes to pre-finished flooring we utilize time-tested techniques with new-age technology. By modernizing methods used during the 1800’s, our finishing treatments honor the natural color, richness, and inherent beauty of the wood, while allowing for easy ongoing maintenance without ever compromising the environment. Each of our custom, handcrafted boards will display a deep, hand rubbed finish rather than one that appears painted on. In addition, our pre-finished boards are coated on both sides to minimize moisture absorption, whereas most floors arrive with the bottom unfinished, making them more vulnerable to the elements. With a Carlisle pre-finished floor, you can rest assured that each plank has been treated with a level of individual care unmatched anywhere else in the industry.

Our Promise There is no surface more important than the one we live on. This is a mantra that guides our sustainable operations. It is a deep seeded belief that drives many of our most fundamental decisions. It is why we never contract with clear-cutters, and only work with a select group of timber growers who share our same commitment to sustainable forest management. It is why we only cut trees that have reached their peak stage of maturity in order to get the maximum wood a tree can produce before beginning its eventual decline. It is why over 90% of our timber comes from suppliers who operate within 500 miles of our mill, minimizing their carbon footprint. And because each floor is hand crafted, not mass-produced, our workers can scrutinize every board, maximizing the wood to be used for flooring, and submitting by-products to be recycled into wood pellets for wood burning stoves.
