DISASTER SERVICES HURRICANE IRENE UPDATE Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by Hurricane Irene. On behalf of the Corporation for National and Community Service, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the countless volunteers and partner agencies that continue to support and assist in meeting the needs of their neighbors and communities. We are not out of the woods yet as power outagesare still wide spread and flooding continues throughout the Northeast.

Approximately 10 NCCCmembers are partnering with the NH DHHSEmergency Services and the NH American Red Crossassisting in locating and conducting site surveys on facilities that could be used in caseof a disaster. New Jersey Con’t The state of New Jersey asks that you: “Please, do not collect or send food, water, clothing or household items unless you have a specific request and a delivery location. Theseitems generally cannot be used in the midst of the disaster -- and it can be said that they create a second disaster. If you would like to assist, monetary donations to a non-profit of your choice is the best way to assist in a disaster.”

Pre-Registering Volunteers - SRI is in the processof signing up individuals who are interested in helping out if needed after Irene. Over 225 people have pre-registered. This is in addition to our Serve Corps Disaster Team (75 volunteers) who will be available to assist. Just in Time Training for New Disaster Volunteers - Saturday, August 27 from 9:30 - 11:00at SRI, 655 Broad St. 3rd floor, Providence Hurricane Irene Lead Team Briefing (-for volunteers with some disaster experience) - Saturday, August 27 from 11:00 -12:00 at SRI, 655 Broad St, 2nd floor, Providence WJAR"Call 10" - Saturday, August 27th - staff and volunteers will answer phones to provide information to community members Networking - SRI is in ongoing communications with our governmental and non-profit partners to identify possible needs for volunteers 2-1-1 - Working with Courtney Smith at UWRI to recruit backgroundchecked volunteers to pre-register for possible 2-1-1 deployment, if needed, to meet surge capacity. AmeriCorps VISTA members in Rhode Island and the RI Serve Corps Disaster Team will be outreached to. NCCC- We have been able to identify several sites willing to house an AmeriCorps NCCC. Staff will follow up with these sites to confirm willingness to house the team. RI Community Food Bank will provide food.
Update SOUTH CAROLINA Carolina Lowcountry American Red CrossRSVP
An RSVPmember was deployed to Richmond, VA to help with transportation and logistics in response to the hurricane. Additional RSVPvolunteers will be mobilized as needed. Approximately 50 volunteers are working with faith-based organizations and Kiwanis to distribute water and work the phones. Update: WASHINGTON DC FEMA’s ESF-6* partners are working in support of the National Recovery Coordination Center (NRCC)and are providing close coordination of ESF-6 activities. CNCSis currently staffing a
desk in the FEMANRCCRed Room. ESF–Emergency Support Functions. ESF’s provide the structure for coordinating Federal interagency support during an emergency. ESF#6 - Mass Care, Emergency Assistance, Housing, and Human Services Coordinates the delivery of Federal mass care, emergency assistance, housing, and human services when local, tribal, and state responseand recovery needs exceed their capabilities.
