Programs Used: Project Size: 93,000 Acres

Location:

Spring Creek Watershed, Central Pennsylvania

In light of predicted sea-level rise, an unprecedented number of coastal New Jersey residents will be left displaced which in turn, leads to a massive influx of in-migrants to Climate Havens like the spring creek watershed, in central Pennsylvania. In this project, we address housing, employment, and food security for 200,000 migrants from Coastal New Jersey. The design consists of a mix of infill housing and mixed-use developments designed to limit disturbance to current land-use.

This new development is designed with overall system health in-mind. Local Waterways provide habitat along with fresh water and recreational opportinuty, so maintaining stream bank health will be the most important factor when planning for increased density. A mix of housing types will be implemented between State College and Bellefonte that provide a means of connectivity that allows for the expansion of economic opportunities while simultaneously providing housing for Climate In-migrants.

Density in the Watershed Reconnecting fragmented corridors of vegetation and maintaining stream bank health through sustainable development practices are prioritized in the redevelopment of the Spring Creek Watershed. The locations of the proposed development are all chosen to build off of or connect existing hubs of development while incorporating methods to reduce impermeability and provide corridors of vegetation for habitat and urban pollutant filtration for stream health.

brownfield restoration

02

Programs Used: Project Size: 36 Acres

Location:

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Bartram’s North is a Brownfield Restoration project nestled between the oldest botanical garden in North America and the Schuylkill River, once known as one of the most polluted rivers in America. Bartram’s Garden was able to survive a long history of industry through preservation efforts by the Eastwick Family who turned the garden into a private park and later by the John Bartram Association.

The design of Bartram’s North takes inspiration from the site’s history to create an immersive educational experience that emphasizes accessibility from Kingsessing neighborhood and Center City. Through programming for education and recreation alongside practices for soil and water health, the design of Bartram’s North simultaneously creates a space for the community while providing key ecological benefits in response to the site’s needs.

The site has a long history of industry that is closely linked to the current condition of soil and water health. This prompted design decisions including the plant palette for soil restoration as well as the need for connectivity between Bartram’s North and the Kingsessing Neighborhood

planting design

03

Programs Used: Project Size: 1.42 Acres

Location:

State College, Pennsylvania West Campus Commons, located in the Pennsylvania State University, is currently used primarily for leisure and passage. Because the site is located between the engineering buildings and graduate student parking, we have found that those are the primary users of the space. In its current state, the space lacks creativity and opportunities to support biodiversity.

The site is designed to be used as an educational installation for Students to learn about native plant and animal species and the habitat they require. The concept is based on patterns of circulation found during a site study that places plant species with winter and summer interest in locations where they will receive the most foot traffic during different points of the year.

Seasonal and Ecological Benefits Rain Garden

The Rain Garden was placed in the location with naturally lowest grade to limit the need for regrading

Prairie Meadow

Prairie Meadow Planting placed on outskirts to provide seasonal interest during winter months, as users typically use the more direct paths located along the outer edges of the Meadow during colder seasons

Mesic Meadow

Mesic Meadow Planting placed along inner-most parts of meadow to encourage users to stop and spend time in the centralized seating nodes during the warmer seasons.
