THE GREAT

Balsam Lake has exceptional fishing, boating and wildlifeadd in nearby trails and you could throw a bow on Balsam Lake because it is a gift for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

Spanning over 2000 acres, Balsam Lake, the largest lake in Polk County. It is a beast, yet blissful for those who enjoy everything from kayaking to jet skiing to canoeing to water skiing. Whether you want to catch panfish for a tasty treat or land a whopper of a walleyeit is your place.

The Native Americans named the area around Balsam Lake “Innenehinduc” which means “Place of the Evergreens.” The Chippewa lived around the lake when the first European settlers arrived. There was a trading post at Balsam Lake from 1844 through 1865. Eventually settlers built a dam, sawmill, and boarding house, and the town of Balsam Lake was born. That dam was rebuilt in 1941, but it no longer exists. The Town of Balsam Lake was officially organized in 1870, and it is Polk’s County Seat. In 1860 there was a dam built at the lake’s outlet. Rebuilt in 1893 it is still a functioning dam and holds the lakes water levels

ten feet higher than the natural levels.

Balsam Lake is predominately fed by creeks. The lake’s outflow is through Mill Pond. There are several islands in the lake to explore.

The lake is mesotrophic tending toward eutrophic, but the water quality is still good.

Balsam Lake is known for its fishing. It’s a highly active

fishing lake, with more than 30 fishing tournaments taking place on the lake per season. There are healthy populations of northern pike, bluegill, crappie, bass and muskie. There is walleye in the lake, but their numbers have been declining. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has stocked Balsam Lake for several years in an

Balsam Branch is a Class II trout stream.

In the winter there is ice fishing, snow shoeing, and snowmobiling to keep cold weather enthusiasts happy at the lake.

The wildlife around Balsam Lake is diverse and plentiful.

The town which sits on Balsam Lake celebrates its annual Freedom Festival on the Thursday through Sunday surrounding the Fourth of July. Nearby Interstate Park is Wisconsin’s oldest State Park and a great place for wildlife. Established is 1900, the park extends into both Wisconsin and Minnesota. OUTDOORS

While the lakes of Polk County are a wonderful place to play and stay, the wooded shorelines and the tall grasses surrounding many hold pesky ticks. While you are out enjoying some of the best weather Wisconsin has to offer, it is important to protect yourself and your family.

While Lyme disease, considered one of the most common tick-borne diseases is usually the biggest concern this time of year, there are two other tickborne diseases on the rise, which it is of importance to gain education.

Powassan Virus

Powassan virus is a non-treatable illness transmitted by the same black legged (or deer ticks) that carry Lyme Disease.

Human Powassan virus infections have been recognized in the United States, Canada, and Russia. In the United States, cases of Powassan virus disease (Powassan) have been reported primarily from northeastern states and the Great Lakes region. These cases occur primarily in the late spring, early summer, and mid-fall when ticks are most active.

Powassan cases are rare, but the reported number of cases have increased in recent years. All residents of and visitors to areas where Powassan virus activity has been identified are at risk of infection. People who engage in outdoor work and recreational activities in endemic areas are at increased risk of infection.

Powassan virus is spread to people by the bite of an infected tick. Ticks become infected when they feed on groundhogs, squirrels, mice, or other rodents that have the virus in their blood. Infected ticks can then spread Powassan virus to people and other animals by biting them. People do not develop high enough levels of the virus in their blood to infect biting ticks. As a result, people are considered “dead-end” hosts

for Powassan virus.

Big difference from Lyme – It takes Lyme Disease many hours (at least 24) to be transmitted from tick to person. It is suspected that Powassan Virus is transmitted from the tick to person in just 15 minutes.

Approximately 1 out of 10 people with severe disease die.

Approximately half of the people who survive severe disease have long-term health problems such as recurring headaches, loss of muscle mass and Healthcare providers diagnose Powassan virus

There are no medications to prevent or treat Powassan virus infection. Antibiotics do not treat viruses. Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain medications may relieve some symptoms. People with severe disease often need to be hospitalized to receive support for breathing, staying hydrated, or reducing

brain (encephalitis) or the membranes around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis).

Symptoms of severe disease include confusion, loss of coordination, difficulty speaking, and seizures.

Babesiosis is another tickborne illness on the rise. Unlike the Powassan virus, babesiosis is treatable if caught early. This illness can also be transmitted by a Federal health officials say cases of tickborne illness have skyrocketed over an 8-year period. Babesiosis is caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells and are spread by certain ticks. In the United States, tickborne transmission is most

common in particular regions and seasons: it mainly occurs in parts of the Northeast and upper Midwest and usually peaks during the warm months. Although many people who are infected with Babesia do not have symptoms, for those who do effective treatment is available. Babesiosis is preventable, if simple steps are taken to reduce exposure to ticks.

Symptoms can include fever, chills, lethargy, joint pain, body aches, loss of appetite, nausea or fatigue –things that can appear to overlap with Lyme disease, but there is no distinctive bullseye rash.

If left untreated, it can lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), severe anemia, congestive heart failure, renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), shock and coma.

In symptomatic people, babesiosis usually is diagnosed by examining blood specimens under a microscope and seeing Babesia parasites inside red blood cells.

To be sure the diagnosis is correct, your health care provider might have specimens of your blood tested by a specialized reference laboratory (such as at CDC or a health department).

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is the most known of the tickborne illnesses. It is transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick.

Cases of Lyme disease have more than tripled since 1993 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Lyme disease causes a rash that looks like a bullseye. It also causes flu-like symptoms, such as fever, chills, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches.

Lyme disease may evolve through phases, which can overlap and cause ever worsening symptoms that may involve the skin, joints, heart, or nervous system.

Antibiotics are effective treatments for Lyme disease when detected early.

Remember, ticks can typically be found in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, or on animals. They typically wait on the tips of branches, leaves, or tall grasses for prey to walk by.

A tick’s saliva has anesthetic properties, so you may not even realize you’ve been bitten.

When spending time outdoors, be aware of your surroundings and the possibility of ticks in the area.

• Wear insect repellent with DEET.

• If you must be in a grassy or wooded area, wear long sleeves and long pants. Tucking your pants into your socks for extra protection.

• Shower immediately after being outside.

• Ask someone check your body for ticks.

• If you find a tick on your body, time is of the essence!

• Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it by the head as close to the skin as possible.

• Gently pull the tick upward, making sure not to twist or squeeze it.

• Wash and disinfect the area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

• Important tip – Save the tick!

Take a photo of the tick and submit to a tick identification website which can inform you of the potential pathogens it could be carrying and whether you might want to have the tick tested as a further assessment of disease risk. ■

THE OWENS FAMILY: IGNITING THE LIGHT

Just like a firework, every great idea begins with a spark. There was a spark burning inside of Joel Owens to make a difference in the lives of others. With his family on board, the spark became a flame and saw the inception of the 1776 foundation. The Owens family now has a goal of the spark turned flamed, spreading like wildfire.

Joel and Jolene Owens live in Sunfish Lake, Minnesota, and have four sons: Anthony, Nicholas, Charlie, and Christopher. The family founded the 1776 Owens Foundation in 2023, after sponsoring a large firework display every Independence Day for 17 years on Bone Lake, then donating all the funds raised to the needs of military veterans and their families.

The family decided to formally build a non-profit 501(c)(3), to provide more events and gain a better reach to properly honor the sacrifice and service of not only vets, but also police and firefighters.

4th of July Fireworks on Bone Lake

The 1776 Owens Foundation will be managing and hosting an Independence Weekend Fireworks Event at the south end of Bone Lake on Sunday, July 2nd. As is usual, the event will begin shortly after sunset. Bone Lake residents and guests will be able to view this massive firework display from their homes, cabins, boats, or docks.

For those new to this event, the display is conducted from multiple barges from the middle of the south end of the lake. This is no small display and really something to be witnessed by more from the surrounding communities, if possible. For 17 years, the Owens family has hired a professional pyrotechnics agency from the Twin Cities to conduct this remarkable display. All the latest fireworks technology – and techniques featured – at this unbelievable show put on by one of the most renowned

pyrotechnics team in the Midwest.

In each of the last 17 years, donations were accepted and earmarked to go to military veterans or the families of fallen veterans. This year, the Owens family has now formed the 1776 Owens Foundation and recently launched its website at www.1776OwensFoundation. org. This 501(c)(3) non-profit now simplifies your tax-deductible donation while helping the organization’s founders establish and create more programs, and further its reach. In this same year, the founders decided to

expand its program to support all who have sacrificed in their service – this includes military veterans, police, and firefighters.

The 1776 Foundation

The Owens believe, “Heroism need not seem rare, and requires a greater emphasis as we mentor our youth and the generations that will soon run this country to preserve the heritage that’s been so carefully built and fought for. Beyond a simple July 4 event every year, raising a nominal amount and having a small impact, we believe that now is the time to expand our reach, grow our programs and encourage participation from all Americans – especially our youth.”

They said they chose to add “1776” to their organization’s name as, “This year is the most important in our nation’s history and integral to the very definition of who we are, from where we came, and the important standards each of us must be held to – but then can also rely upon. This year stands as a tribute to our Founding Fathers and their families. This year represents the beginning of American courage and American heroism.”

Joel grew up in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and graduated high school in 1989 and then joined the US Air Force and served overseas in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Following his active duty in 1992, Joel got into the data center hardware and support industry and has subsequently started many computerSEE 12A

THE LEGEND OF ONONDOGACONA A.K.A. BONE LAKE

Onondogacona is the interesting Indian name for Bone Lake and translates to Lake of the Small Pines. Carbon dating of artifacts shows the first known settlers were Native Americans who lived on Indian Point around 900 A.D.

Beautiful Bone Lake covers 1781 acres and offers 12.5 miles of shoreline. Rich in history, the story begins with Native mound builders, holds chapters spotlighting gangsters, and today features families and recreationists who love the variety of the welcoming waters.

Bone, pottery and beads made from shells have been found in the remains of mounds built by the people Contributed

who called Onondogacona home.

The ruins of what was believed to have once been a trading post, fort, and missionary center for French traders have been found on the south end of Bone Lake. The post remains were believed to have been one in a chain which ran from Sault Ste. Marie to DeSoto (a town 50 miles south of LaCrosse). French posts had been established in Northern Wisconsin as early as 1700. Historical research revealed that the name of the post found near Bone Lake was Fort Onondogacona.

Remains show the main post was a building 24 by 36 feet in size. Grouped closely were the remains of six cabins. Slightly larger than the cabins, two parallel rows of stones indicated the alter where the “Courers- de- Boie” worshipped.

During the year, but especially in the spring, the Ojibways came to the post with their ginseng, maple syrup and fur to trade for many things the white man produced.

A large settlement of Ojibwa lived in Teepees or Hogans (A traditional dwelling of the Navajo people) on Indian Point until the 1700’s and there was

at least one Hogan located on the Holmberg farm until the same date.

Ching-gwa-mik, elder of the Chippewa (Ojibwe) tribe, lived with his wife and nine children on Little Clam Lake. At this time there was much unrest over all of Ojibway territory. Sioux made repeated forays into the area and there were many skirmishes. However, the Sioux decided to ask the Ojibwe to join with them in attacking their mutual enemy--the white settlers who lived near Frederic. A council had been called at

Bone Lake where many of the tribe lived. The Sioux were sending representatives. Ching-gwa- ga-mik disliked the Sioux and was growing old. He could see no reason to travel a long distance to meet with a traditional enemy. At the council, members argued loud and long. They decided to take a vote-- the results of what showed the Ojibwa split down the middle-- half were for joining the Sioux, and half for refusing. I-yaw-barise (later to become a great chief), left camp to run a message to Ching-gwa-ga-mik, who was

Contributed

the Ojibwa chief. He took the Indian Trail from Bone Lake to Clam Lake and back again in one night-no small feat. Morning found I-yaw-banee back on the shores of Bone Lake with his tribal, who cast the deciding vote in favor of his white neighbors and that saved the village of Frederic from an Indian attack.

The land around Bone Lake was covered with rich and virgin growing of white pine. The Ward Logging Company cut the timber around the lake in the winter of 18441845. In 1853 the state

sold 12,000 acres in Bone Lake Township for 85 cents an acre. Of course, the trees had been cut and the new settlers had to remove the stumpage. Some of the logs were four and five feet in diameter. The Ward Logging Company had previously lumbered off the trees around Big Round and Blake lakes, and they tried to use the same technique on the much larger Bone Lake, but were met with a different situation. Their objective was to float the logs down Fox Creek and thence to the Apple River and on to St. Croix. The capricious winds on the much larger lake would change the direction of the logs and many ailed willfully around until they became waterlogged. Mail was carried up the St. Croix River by bateaus in the summer and by sled in the winter. In 1845 the overland route was begun. The mail arrived weekly, and was delivered to the Dueholm Post Office, which was established in 1894, with Chris Dueholm, Sr. as postmaster. The post office was located at Dueholm corner on the northeast end of the lake.

SUNNYSIDE MARINA IS A FAMILY TRADITION

At Sunnyside Marina in Balsam Lake, sure you'll find accessories for boats and pontoons, motors, other powersports gear and clothing-but you will also find families. Families who have been pulling up to the Marina for years to purchase gas and snacks, families who come back annually to rent cabins and pontoons; and the Reed family, who are now in the second generation of ownership of Sunnyside Marina.

Jeff Reed shared, “Our parents bought this place in 1972. My brother

Reed said it the people that make the business fun. They are what he loves about what he does. “I grew up in the business. After college, my wife in I were in the Minneapolis Metro area, but we came back to go into the family business and I believe the best part is our clients. For many of them, this is their vacation home. We have the opportunity to live where everyone else chooses to vacation and that is pretty awesome,” Reed said. He said Balsam Lake has been a great place to raise their children. The convenience to the Twin Cities makes the village special because they are able to keep their small charm, while

To prevent damage to your boat from exposure by properly winterizing it. If you have a boat with an Inboard/outboard, it is critical to get your boat winterized long before freezing temps arrive. If the engine is subjected to freezing temps, the water in the engine will freeze and severely damage the motor costing you several thousands of dollars in repairs or engine replacement. Last year Sunnyside stored just over 400 units in their buildings.

COOKING BY THE LAKE

From surf to turf, lakeside recipes you’ll love

There is no one way to catch walleye. In fact, there are many different ways. The same can be said for cooking the fish.

Walleye is known to be a palatable freshwater fish that can be cooked into one heck of a tasty dish.

Like most white fish, it’s ideal for pairing with bold flavors, such as tomatoes and pesto.

Plus, it grills beautifully and holds its shape well after cooking.

That means you don’t need to worry about it falling apart before it reaches your plate!

Walleye over Tomato-Olive Angel Hair Pasta Recipe

2-4 walleye fillets, skinless and boneless

2 servings dry angel hair pasta

Olive oil, to taste

4 anchovies packed in oil

8 cloves garlic, minced

10 ½ ounces cherry tomatoes, halved

Dry herbs: oregano, basil

2 sprigs fresh thyme

Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Halved, pitted Kalamata olives, to taste

Juice of a quarter of a lemon

Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

Bring water and a pinch of salt to a boil for pasta. Cook angel hair pasta to al dente according to package directions. Drain pasta, but reserve ½ cup of pasta water. In the meantime, while you wait for the water to boil, heat 1 tablespoon of oil inside a deep, wide pan over medium heat. Add anchovies and sauté for 30 seconds to 1 minute,

breaking up anchovies with a wooden spoon.

Next, add minced garlic and stir for 30 seconds until fragrant, but do not brown. Add halved cherry tomatoes, a dash of basil, oregano and fresh thyme. Stir for 2-3 minutes until tomatoes begin to soften.

Next add about half a cup of reserved pasta water to the pan. Allow sauce to simmer and slightly reduce for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt and pepper to taste. Then reduce the heat to low or medium low, and lay walleye fillets into the pan and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover the pan and simmer for about 5 minutes, or until fish is cooked through.

Taste the sauce again for taste. Discard thyme sprigs. Squeeze lemon juice over fish and add halved Kalamata olives to sauce. Serve sauce and fish over warm angel hair pasta garnished with parsley and a drizzle of olive oil.

To make sure the pasta is well seasoned, you may also carefully remove the fish onto serving plates, and then toss the pasta directly into the sauce. Add more salt, pepper and olive oil as desired.

Hot Diggity Summer Dogs: Tex Mex, County Fare, Pizza Dawg, Bacon Mac ‘N Cheese

INGREDIENTS

(for all four variations)

4 hot dog wieners

4 hot dog or sausage buns

For the Tex Mex:

1 cup corn salsa

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

2 jalapeño peppers, sliced and grilled

For the lime-cilantro mayonnaise:

½ cup mayonnaise juice of ½ a lime

1 tablespoon cilantro, chopped

For the County Fare:

4 pickles, sliced lengthwise

1 cup beef chili, warmed

1 cup shredded sharp Canadian cheddar ketchup, prepared mustard and relish for garnish

For the Pizza Dawg:

1 cup tomato pizza sauce

1 cup sautéed onions, mushrooms and peppers

½ cup sliced green olives

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons flat-leaf parsley, chopped, for garnish

For the Bacon Mac ‘N Cheese:

8 rashers bacon, cooked

1 cup macaroni and cheese, warmed

½ cup crumbled blue cheese

1 cup creamy coleslaw, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Prepare the hot dogs: Preheat grill to 500°F. Using a pairing knife, cut small 45° slits along the length of the wieners, marking every half-inch and going about halfway deep. Transfer the wieners onto the hot grill and cook for about 5 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure they’re uniformly cooked. Use wieners in one or more of the following ways:

For the Tex Mex: Open buns on work surface and spoon equal amounts of corn salsa onto each, spreading it out evenly. Place one cooked wiener onto each bun. Sprinkle with Monterey Jack then add slices of grilled jalapeños. Place prepared hot dogs into an ovensafe casserole or rectangular baking pan. Transfer to preheated 250°F oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese has melted and bun is toasted. Combine mayo, lime juice and cilantro and add to hot dogs as garnish. Serve immediately.

For the County Fare: Open buns on work surface and line each side with pickle slices. Place one cooked wiener onto each bun. Add a helping of chili on top of each, spreading it across the hot dog. Sprinkle with cheese. Place prepared hot dogs into an oven-safe casserole or rectangular baking pan. Transfer to preheated 250°F oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese has melted and bun is toasted. Garnish with ketchup, mustard and relish. Serve immediately.

has a deep history of its own. A supper Club for many years, it is now a rental property. The stone building and was built by Charles E. Calder and his three sons, with completion occurring in 1923. Calder had originally come to the lake in 1898 on his summer vacation. Father Phillip Gordon was the only Indian priest in the area, and he conducted Sunday Mass on the West Porch of Calderwood Lodge. Guests came to spend the summer or a weekend. Charlie Calder

would meet them at the Luck Depot and transport them to the Lodge.

The current Calderwood Lodge boasts guests can stay where Al Capone, John Dillinger and his gang did in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Allegedly, their gang would park their convoy of Ford Model T’s near the lake on a dirt road that now forms 240th Avenue. Bone Lake offers a mean depth of 20 feet, with a maximum depth of 43 feet. Full of crappie, perch,

bluegill, bass, muskie and northern pike. Visitors can reach the lake from public boat launches at the south and north ends of the lakes. The north end features Bone Lake Point Park offering not only the boat launch, but public toilets, a fishing pier and picnic pavilions. ■

LAKESIDE LANDSCAPING &

CENTER: A PASSING OF THE BRANCH

It has been said, “Those having torches, will pass them to others.” In the case of Greg and Brenda Strilzuk, the owners of Lakeside Landscaping & Garden Center, you could say they are passing on the branch. You would say this because the company is well known for the quality and variety of trees they carry and because they are retiring with three of their five children taking over the business.

The story isn’t as simple as Twin Cities boy meets Balsam Lake girl, they start a business, raise a bunch of kids, work hard, decide to retire-the end.

It is a story of dedication and hard work, plus the importance of instilling that ethic into your children. It is a story of

forming bonds and friendships with customers who have entrusted you with their dream properties. It is a story of being proud members of a little village and a story of how it certainly does take a village sometimes to get through life, so it can be hard to make the decision to finally hang up your hat and sit back as the next generation takes over the wheel.

“The clients we have had over the years have been so unreal,” said Greg, “The best part of the business is becoming friends with your clients.

The Strilzuks take pride in the fact that many of their customer relationships have developed into lifelong friendships and they are grateful for the relationships that have been developed over

their many years of business in Northwest Wisconsin.

Greg was a city slicker from the Twin Cities before he and Brenda moved to her hometown of Balsam Lake.

They purchased their home, which was once a place Brenda resided when she was 12 years old. Greg was doing landscape work for others when he was finally convinced to take the plunge and go out on his own.

“The decision to go into our own business was not an easy one,” said Brenda.

Greg agreed. He said, “We had five kids. Trying to take care of kids and wondering if you were going to make it was worry some, but each year it has gotten better and better.”

Their house sat with a nine acre hay field and they turned it into the grounds of Lakeside

Landscaping & Garden Center, a place people grew to love and trust because of Brenda’s knowledge about plants and the way the company has continued to grow and adapt in a fast changing landscape and nursery industry. “By combining our own expertise and our customer’s vision, we take pride in transforming people’s outdoor space into an area that they enjoy for many years down the road.”

Their Garden Center offers trees, shrubs and perennials. They have quality plants, which is what they strive to provide. They have landscape materials for sale and of course they off landscaping services.

Customers have commented how beautiful their property is. They realize their business might be more noticeable out on the highway, but their spot really gives customers a warm welcome and a homey feel when they pull up the driveway. “People love the country setting,” said Greg.

The Strilzuks have built a reputation focused on quality and customer service in their many years of service to surrounding communities and residents. Greg prides himself in the fact that although they can be crazy busy, he always makes it a priority to get back to callers.

to be in. I have loved working outside. There are years working outside has been hard though, and of course it can be very physical. Our kids work their tails off to provide good service to our customers too and it has worked out well for all of us,” said Greg.

He shared they have done everything from small jobs to really huge jobs.

Brenda said she feels their jobs have gotten larger over time as area lakes have changed. “Look at the lakes. They have really become destinations for people with second homes. It is not just typical cabins anymore either,” she said.

Greg said they were worried COVID would take a big hit on their business, but actually the pandemic saw many people moving out to their lake homes and actually cause more of a boom to their business.

They understand why people would want to move out this

way. They are proud to live here.

Their property, while off the beaten path, is unique as it offers the business in the front, yet private space for the Strilzuks to relax and enjoy family time in the back.

Lakeside has been a proud member of the Balsam Lake community and Polk County region for over 30 years.

Now that they have made the decision to retire and their boys are taking over this year, they are planning on traveling and spending time with their grandchildren.

Three of their five sons: Nick, Cole and Chad.

Chad also has a dock business of his own.

“I want to retire,” said Greg, “But it is so hard. I run daily to jobs and love seeing people. I can’t sit still, but the days are flying by so fast. I want to enjoy my hobbies like bee keeping.

It is hard to step back though, that is why is has been so important to have our kids to take over. The clients love the kids too.”

Brenda feels the kids have taken the business to another level and each have some special skills of their own.

All are welcome to a party to celebrating the retirement of Greg and Brenda, being held at Viv’s in downtown Balsam Lake July 15, 2023 from 5p.m.8p.m.

When asked what they will missed most, Greg answered swiftly and with a big smile. “The people.

For sure the people,” he said. Brenda agreed. With a gentle grin, she nodded her head, almost in reflection on the past decades with affection and softly said, “Absolutely the people.”

WALLEYE: THE TOTALLY COOL CATCH-LITERALLY!

An old fishing joke says, “God created bass so everyone could fish. He created walleye to separate the men from the boys.”

The walleye is one of the most sought-after fish in Wisconsin. In fact, few fish have such a strong fan base as the cool-water-loving walleye. Its thick, white fillets, handsome shape, coloring, and elusive nature make it the ultimate prize among anglers.

As lakes across the upper Midwest grow warmer year after year, cool-water species of fish are finding it harder to thrive. In Wisconsin, it is populations of walleye taking a hit. The fish is a top target for casters, and a popular item on many restaurant menus, so the state has worked hard to try to keep walleye plentiful.

Walleye are interesting fish with a scientific name of Sander vitreus (Sander refers to the German common name of the European relative) and vitreus means "glassy", referring to the large eye.

Walleye are largely olive and gold in color. The dorsal side of a walleye is olive, grading into a golden hue on the flanks. The olive/ gold pattern is broken up by five darker saddles that extend to the upper sides. The color shades to white on the belly. The mouth of a walleye is large and is armed with many sharp teeth. The first dorsal and anal fins are spinous, as is the operculum. Walleyes are distinguished from their close relative the sauger by the white coloration on the lower lobe of the caudal fin, which is absent on the sauger. In addition, the two dorsals and the caudal fin of the sauger are marked

with distinctive rows of black dots which are absent from or indistinct on the same fins of walleyes.

Walleye prefer the cool, deep, quiet waters of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Walleye are mostly nocturnal and during the day are often found under the cover of tree roots, logs, and aquatic plants. At night, they travel to shallower waters.

Wisconsin spends millions of dollars each year on efforts to keep walleye fisheries running. Some feel

as “a ton of harvest management, including strict regulations like closing walleye fisheries or severely limiting harvest.”

According to Feiner, these efforts are not working very well. For example, in Wisconsin, lakes that have historically been havens for walleye are now so warm that the scales are tipped in favor of species of fish like bass and bluegill. No amount of effort is going to fix the fact that the walleye’s living conditions have changed.

This is a fact that Holly Embke, a research fish biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, knows all too well.

Embke recently completed a five-year research project aimed at giving walleye a boost in a northern Wisconsin lake. Her primary objective was to remove from the lake as many bass, bluegill and other fishes in the warm-water family called centrarchids as she could. The thought was that — free of competition for food and habitat —walleye would have a chance to rebound and reestablish a

on the report. Under such strategies, the goal is to “restore” struggling fish species, not accept and adapt to new conditions that now favor different species. In Wisconsin, “we try to prevent and resist change and keep walleye coming out of lakes,” Feiner says. That adds up to heavy investment in raising walleye in hatcheries and stocking them in lakes, as well

Despite removing nearly 300,000 centrarchids from the lake, however, Embke’s team didn’t detect any sort of improvement in walleye numbers.

“We threw tons and tons of effort out there —much more than would be feasible for a management agency — and we didn’t get a response from walleye,” Embke says.

It’s clear that interactions between walleye and the SEE 10C

warm-water species in the centrarchid family are “not something that’s under the control of fisheries managers to fix,” Embke says.

Most of the time, warm water species are simply going to come out on top in warming lakes.

The news isn’t all bad for walleye fans. Even under the more extreme warming models, Embke and Feiner point out, there will still be lakes that provide cold-water refuges for walleye.

“Much of the work in the future is, I think, going to be on the social side, laying the groundwork for people to be able to accept changing fisheries,” Feiner says.

Whoppin’ Wisconsin Walleye

In 2020 Eric Van Dyn Hoven of Kaukauna, reeled in a walleye on Lac Vieux Dessert near Phelps Wisconsin that was 31.75 inches long and, when weighed the next day on a digital scale, was 16.87 lbs. The fish was a female, mostly or completely spent after spawning, and would have been substantially heavier a few weeks earlier when laden with eggs-possibly a record breaker. The Wisconsin record for walleye is an 18-pound fish caught in 1933, the oldest state fish record. It was

caught in 1933 on High Lake in Vilas County, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Welcome to beautiful Balsam Lake, a village living in natural harmony. Established in 1905 the Village of Balsam Lake rests on the southwest shore of Balsam Lake in one of the most prime tourist locations of northwest Wisconsin. Whether you are looking to relax or take part in a wide variety of activities, both on and off shore, the Village of Balsam Lake is the place for you! The Village is nestled on the largest lake in the area, (2,054 acres), which is teeming with fish to satisfy the most avid of anglers. The unique shoreline stretches 65 miles and the lake is dotted with picturesque islands and bays. Fine Dining and casual eateries abound and over 50 businesses provide a vast array of services.

Like some other old fish records, doubt has been cast on the legitimacy of Wisconsin's biggest walleye

because there is no photo documentation of the fish and its information was presented years after it had been caught,

according to the DNR. Still, it's on the books and is recognized by state officials. ■
