When things get cold and dark, it’s important to remember those sunny summer days that made life wonderful. Those bright months ﬁlled with so much to be thankful for. Speaking of being thankful, I would like to express my appreciation to the readers for taking this Laker journey with me. The publication truly is a family affair, which is why it was fun to spotlight so many families in this ﬁnal summer edition of the Laker. I write the stories, members of my work family work on ads and design. Every other Sunday my sevenyear-old son helps me bag papers. My husband and teenage daughters deliver the papers door-to-door on that lakes that receive that service. My two sisters, my brother-in-law, nephews and my dad have also helped with delivery. We hired a few kiddos to help as well and they have become like family to us.

While I might have a little more free time on my hands in the upcoming months, I will truly miss the readers. I have gotten to know many of you through interviews, phone calls, emails and photos. It has been a joy. Lake Wapogasset has come a long way since it’s days as Sucker Lake. The beloved bodies of water now known as “Wapo” and Bear Trap bring thousands of people to the Amery area throughout the year. Lake Wapogasset encompasses 1189 acres and is home to over 600 residents, various local businesses and two summer camps. Lake Wapogasset is connected to Bear Trap Lake through a small narrows. Bear Trap Lake is 247 acres with a max depth of 25 feet. Wapo has three public accesses with two being owned by the Town of Garﬁeld and Bear Trap has one public boat landing owned by the town of Lincoln. Wapogasset and Beartrap are unique in the fact that they have a combined lake association, conservancy, and sanitary district. In the 1800s, Wapogasset was known as Sucker Lake, surrounded largely by dairy farms, and was home to plentiful pike, walleye and bass populations. Fertilizer in the runoff was mostly natural, and Wapo teemed with plant life. Five miles long from tip to tip and about a mile wide at maximum, the lake also encompassed a smaller body of water known as Bear Trap Cove. By 1911, Wapogasset was lined with cottages and a man by the name of Dr. James Wallace founded what is now known as the Lake Wapogasset Bear Trap Improvement Association, dedicated to preserving and protecting the lake for residents and recreational users alike. Wallace was not a medical doctor, but rather the president of Macalester College in St. Paul. In little more than a century, the lake has gone from a rural farming staple to a popular visitorWapo/Beardesitination.Trapare Amery’s largest body of water, and about 30 percent those with properties on the lakes keep a full-time address there. Out of all these residents, 508 (over 75 percent) are voluntary members of the Improvement Association. The association is always busy with lake preservation efforts, whether in the form of collaborations with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources or citizen-comprised committees. One such project, the Clean Boats Clean Waters effort, aims to curtail the Contributed Chris Franzen with a 47.5 inch Muskie caught on Lake Wapogasset.

Some people still call it Crickets and some still call it the Tac. Whatever they want to call it, we are happy they show up at our door,” said Mella Schluesner. Mella is just one member of the Schluesner family, who are the owners of BrowTine, a popular bar/restaurant/venue located right off of County Road H. The location sees it being a short drive from many Polk County Lakes. North of Amery and South of Luck, it won’t take long for you to jaunt over for a cold drink or a bite to eat. “We are a family owned and ran business. We are working hard every day to create the best food, atmosphere,comfortablegoodservice and fun times for our customers. We appreciate everyone who supports us. We are thankful each and every day to have this opportunity,” said Mella. Her history with the business started about 12 years ago. She said, “I started working for Gary and Nancy Searle when it was Crickets. Just a one night a week gig to get out of the house turned into a life changing experience that I’m so thankful for.” Her children Mason and Myles actually started at ages 12 and 14 at Crickets moving tables and chairs around in the banquet hall for Gary. Mella shared, “My son Mason bought in to BT the year he graduated High School, 2021. He actually bought in a few months Before graduating. Which is absolutely amazing, we were so proud of him! My husband and I bought in with our son in May of this year. We bought out Mason’s partner Barbara Jarchow. Who is an amazing person who was a great mentor for my son and his business venture. She is truly a wonderful person and we appreciate everything she has done for Mason, ourselves and BrowTine.”BrowTine offers a number of things. Weddings, Christmas parties, Catering, private parties and the list goes on. “Big or small we would love to be a part of anyone’s special day,” Mella said. arrival and spread of invasive species within Wapogasset and BearPolkTrap.County Water Quality Specialist Colton Sorensen said, “Multiple lakes in Polk County are doing Alum treatments to help address internal loading. Internal loading is the release of phosphorous from sediments in the bottom of the lake under anoxic conditions, which is contributing to the algae blooms on the lake. Wapogasset Lake has had studies completed and found that internal loading is an issue resulting in more significant algae bloom. In 1999 an alum treatment was applied to Wapogasset Lake which was the first alum treatment in Polk County where 744,000 gallons of alum were applied to depths greater than 15 feet.” The results in the fall had reductions as predicted as well as the concentration in the summer of 2000, however in spring of 2001 the dam blew out on the Balsam Branch and the phosphorous levels started increasing and have continued since.“The Wapogasset alum treatment did not have as great of results as anticipated at the time however, alum applications have come a long ways in fact that scientists have adjusted the dosing and timing of dose’s as a result of how the lake is responding. Alum treatments since have been much more effective with typically 3 lower quantity dose’s over a span of several years,” said Sorensen. As far as invasive species, Bear trap has Chinses Mystery Snails, Curly Leaf Pondweed and Yellow Iris. Wapogasset has Chinses Mystery Snails, Curly Leaf Pondweed, Japanese Knotweed and Yellow Iris. The DNR has stocked the lakes with native species like Walleye and Northern Pike in order to diminish invasive species’ impact, and five settlement plates are also used in order to keep taps on the lakes’ biodiversity and watch out for Zebra Mussels, which are common pests in other area lakes but are not yet present in Wapogasset and Bear Trap. The industrialization and development in earnest of Wapogasset’s surrounding land began shortly after World War Boat landing at Garfield Park. ON 13A

After High School Graduation Gene began working as a construction worker during the summers while attending college at U.W. River Falls. He majored in Agriculture Education with an emphasis in engineering and horticulture. His education and work experience have contributed to the success of Meyer Landscaping.Overtheyears, Meyer Landscaping has changed drastically. What started as parttime work for Gene, has turned into a full-time business for him and his oldest son, Jacob. Both Gene and Jacob had careers as teachers, but when Gene retired from his teaching career, he began landscaping full time. As the business kept growing, Jacob decided to leave his teaching career to further develop the business into what it is today. As with any seasonal job in Wisconsin, peak employee rate is throughout the summer months with over 18 employees that make up 3-4 crews. However, both spring and fall holds the crew steady between 12-15 employees. A crew can be on a project for one day or multiple weeks depending on the size of theTheproject.Meyers said all of their projects are unique in their own way, which is one of the many reasons they enjoy this line of work. Lake homes, just like any project brought to them, typically include some sort of hardscape (patios, sidewalks, steps, retaining walls, riprap shorelines, outdoor kitchens, etc.), decorative softscapes (decorative rock, mulch, trees, plantings), and lawn installation.Eachday is different, and they enjoy being a part of the process from start to ﬁnish. “When we complete each landscape design, there is a satisfaction in seeing the result of everyone’s hard work and the happiness and appreciation of the faces of clients,” they said. This voracious predator is common throughout Wisconsin and one of the easiest fish to catch because it so willingly bites lures or bait. A close cousin of the musky, the northern pike is only slightly smaller than its relatives, making it the Badger State’s second largest carnivorous fish. Northern pikes appear a dull, muddy green in coloration, and are usually speckled with lightercolored spots across the left and right sides of their bodies. Their undersides appear white or otherwise very light-colored, and they measure on average between 16 and 22 inches long and typically weigh about 34 pounds. Perhaps the northern pike’s most distinctive feature is its teeth, which are razor-sharp and number in the hundreds. Pikes’ tails are more rounded compared to their musky cousins, and while both species have scales on their faces and pores under their jaws, a pike has more scales and fewer pores (4 to 5), while a musky has fewer scales and more pores (6 to 9). The offspring of the female musky and male northern pike is known as the tiger musky. They generally have dark bodies and light stripes, spotted round tails and fins, and a median amount of face scales and pores (5 to 7). The record Northern Pike in the State was caught in 1952 and weighed in at 38 pounds. It was caught in Lake Puckaway in Green Lake County. Just about any Polk County lake is a safe bet for a day spent fishing for pikes, although you’ll want to consult the DNR lake directory to learn which bodies of water are particularly abundant in them. Pikes are especially prevalent in waters flowing into and near the Great Lakes or the Mississippi River. The northern pike tends to prefer shallower, colder habitats with plenty of weed growth to hide out in while lurking for prey. During the hottest days of summer, you might find them hanging out near inlets and streams, or near the lake bottom in deeper Consideringwaters.their preference for chillier waters, it might not come as a surprise to you that winter is a more lucrative time for catching pikes than summer is. August tends to bring hotter temperatures and peak food supplies, so the northern pike will be less inclined to bite and more apt to seek out a lake’s coldest depths. Northern Pike are weak prolonged swimmers and jumpers and very susceptible to impediments. Northern pike have difficulty jumping over barriers, cannot swim effectively through fast moving waters greater than two feet per second and require frequent rest areas when traveling through streams. Pike season officially spans from the first Saturday in May to the first Sunday in March of the following year. During the two-month hiatus, the fish will probably be spawning, which takes place in marshy, vegetation-rich locales during the night hours in late March and early April. How to catch northern pike Remember, they tend to be less discriminatory than muskies, so don’t be afraid to break out the colorful, noisy bait. Bright colors like white and orange, vibrations and sounds, and large bait are all known to attract pikes from great distances. Because the northern pike is stubborn and toothy, make sure your tackle is sturdy and substantive, and your leader is thick (ideally steel) so it doesn’t get bitten off! ■ Metro Creative Connection

Not long after, the building surge of the 1950s began, when property owners built uninsulated two-season cabins, with no building code or inspector. In the 1970s, the association played an instrumental role, alongside the DNR, in developing the Lake Wapogasset and Bear Trap Lake Sanitary District, which instituted the lake’s ﬁrst sewer system, only the second of its kind on a Wisconsin Lake. After the sewer system was built, many buyers purchased the original two-season cabins from the 1950s, tore them down, and built year-round homes or insulated cabins. From the Surface Water Resources of Polk County in 1961, “The lakes had four resorts and one bible camp, tow boat liveries (boat houses or dock where they are let out for hire) and 204 cottages. One hundred eight acres of marsh wetland adjoin the lake where mallards, bluewing teal, wood ducks and lesser scaup nest. While a blast fish to catch, many find them tough to eat. Pike meat tastes great, but pike fillets have a line of y-bones running right through the middle of them. On mid-sized pike (24-30 inches) it’s easy to remove these y-bones. On the small pike though, it’s hard to remove the y-bones and still get a good-sized fillet. And that’s where this recipe comes to the rescue — the pickling process dissolves the y-bones so you can keep those smaller guys. The meat turns out firmer than you’d expect and there’s not even a taste of “fishy” flavor. With some onions and a cracker, it’s an unbeatable appetizer.

• ½ teaspoon sea salt • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil • Make it creamy (optional): 1 avocado or ½ cup plain whole milk Greek yogurt

• Add slices of oranges Directions: Cut fillets into squares approximately 1-inch chunks. Leave the y-bones in (these will dissolve during the pickling process). Cover completely with brine: ½ cup of salt (not iodized) to 1 quart of water. Drain brine after 24 hours cover with white vinegar for 12 hours. Drain off vinegar and throwPackaway.fishin jars and add raw onion slices in alternate layers. Add enough pickling solution to cover fish and then cover the jars. Method: dissolve sugar in vinegar, heat do not boil, then cool. Add wine, onions, orange slices and pickling spice. It’s perfect for mid-late summer, when all sorts of veggies are coming into season, and it’s too hot to turn on the oven. In my opinion, peppers, summer squash, onions, mushrooms, and corn are the best vegetables to grill. Cut into similar-sized pieces and skewered, they all cook at about the same rate. And when you slide them off the skewer, you get a mouthwatering mix of textures and flavors – the mushrooms are meaty, the corn is crisp, the squash is soft, and the peppers and onions are nicely sweet. Drizzled in Cilantro Lime Dressing, they become a delicious summer meal that bursts with flavor and you can make it in about 20 minutes from start to finish.

Lake Wapogasset Lutheran Bible Camp, affectionately known as Camp Wapo, is a camp and retreat center afﬁliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amery (ELCA) offering summer camp programs for youth (Grade 1-12), adults, and families and year round programmed retreats, facility rental, and conference space for a wide variety of groups. Many people have recently traded the hustle and bustle of urban life for something a bit more tranquil. They are enjoying time spent exploring new areas and cherishing moments spent with those you love.American anthropologist Loren Eisley once said, “There is a magic on this planet, and it is contained in water.”Those who spend time on area lakes would probably agree. There is something magical about the serenity provided by sitting on the shores and the memories made out on the waters. There is no better feeling than when you can share that magic with your family. From the time she was a child, Julie DeHaan enjoyed time spent on Lake Wapogasset. Her parents were on the lake for 40 years on a seasonal site. Her grandparents would rent a cabin on Wapo back in the 60’s and her dad would take her fishing. Fast forward five decades and she and her husband are now the grandparents, keeping the tradition going and taking their grandkids fishing. When they originally chose their spot on the lake 26 years ago, the DeHaans appreciated that it was close to the water, level with the water, had beautiful morning sunrises, and great neighbors. It was the perfect spot to spend weekends and vacation times. Their favorite things about the lake are the good fishing, that it is a big and clean lake, it is close to the city of Amery and not too far from the Twin Cities. Like many find, the lake kept calling them back more and more. They yearned the peace and quiet and had a desire to get away from the busy city. The DeHaans have now traded in city life in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota for a full time gig on Wapo. Over two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, nationwide, areas adjacent to urban centers saw more people moving compared to pre-pandemic levels. After much speculation about emptied downtowns and suburbs, with the prospect of remote work, the clearest picture yet is emerging about were all of the “city folk” flocked. But perhaps it’s more of a shuffle. Despite talk of mass moves, data shows most people who did move stayed close to where they came from—to their lakeThehomes.DeHaans are big fans of their new full-time community and enjoy their trips into Amery. Julie said, “It is a friendly community and small town feel. We love to visit the Amery golf course, Farmer’s Market, Pure n Simple, Brew and Sip, Village Pizzeria, and Amery Ale Works.”Their family loves to join them at the lake. Julie said, “They absolutely enjoy spending time at the lake. We enjoy fishing, wake surfing, jet skiing, swimming, stopping at Mort’s Marina (especially the grandkids), ice fishing, skating, four wheeling, and stopping at Waterside Bar and Grill.”

her previous work as a physical therapist allowed the flexibility to have their two children home with her while doing work she loves.Dizzy Jay Farm provides experiencesridingfor riders of all ages and stages of experience ranging from complimentary Storytime (which includes leadline pony rides), 4-hour horse camps, girl scout horsemanship badge acquisition, introductory horse training classes, seasonal trail rides, and learning competitive gaming events. “We strive to create a relaxing and inclusive environment where visitors not only interact with the horses, but also our welcoming committee of goats, ducks, potbelly pig, and rabbits. Some riders/families join us as often as two times a week, and some come for a one-time experience. We try to be flexible to meet the needs of local families as well as families that are vacationing in the area,” said Johnson. As far as lessons, Johnson said the length of time a rider takes lessons varies significantly depending on the individual. Some riders take lessons briefly before venturing more into school sports or other activities. Johnson said, “Others come to see us to check an item off their bucket list. This spring, the sweetest lady came to join us because at 80 years old she confessed to her daughter that she’d always wanted to try to ride a horse!”Forother riders, horseback riding becomes a lifelong commitment, and they pursue riding lessons until able to own or lease their own horse. It really depends on the interest level of the individual. Some riders who own a horse also work with Dizzy Jay on training techniques and “tricks of the trade” to improve their partnership with their own horse. The owners take pride in participating in fundraisers to help out any charity looking as they also help the veterans and clubs in the area with anything they can, whether it is support of donations or foods. Waterside Bar & Grill has a private boat landing that anyone can use, and their docks have space for 14 boats or more. Anyone coming in from the lake or using the landing is able to come to their docks. Car and aviation enthusiasts fill the town and the airport for a full day of spectating-including a thrilling acrobatic air show, fly in, over 800 custom classic cars from every era and over 800 motorcycles. Hot rods, rat rods, vintage planes, ultra lights and other incredible pieces of aviation, mechanical art and history fill the airport. The popular Radar Run, Kid Zone and Pancake Breakfast are in queue. With more than 5 acres of aircraft displays, fun for the kids, food and refreshments, the 41st Annual Wheels and Wings event will bring thrills and fond memories for your whole family.
