7 GLOBAL HOSPITAL, CHENNAI INDIA The design goal of this healthcare project is to capture the spirit and essence of the new evolving healthcare systems leading to holistic environment in public healthcare.. This was a 22 acre facility (medical college campus) to be transformed into a comprehensive healthcare facility. The design challenge was not only to integrate renovation and new built areas as required but also to enrich the public perception of the facility in the community to be consistent with the other system hospitals. Because of the restrictions enforced by the structural capabilities of the existing buildings, this project was conceived as a horizontal spread with the various activities of the healthcare facility well connected by the exterior landscape patterns to simplify the wayfinding system and hence integrating all the platforms as a single functional comprehensive facility.

The design approach was to create a hospitality environment that addressed key patient and procedural issues in a simple format with honesty and directness and its relationship to the spirit of the existing facility and surroundings inducing the educational programs as part of the facility design. The basic design challenge was to establish a connection between (a)Treatment (outpatient) platform (b)Diagnostic platform (c)Intervention platform (d)Inpatient platform (e)Convention / learning platform (f)Residential platform along with the horizontal circulation patterns evolved as part of landscape design integrating the flow of the exterior and interior spaces.

The Intervention platform, comprising, 16 surgical suites, 2 catheterization, 4 endoscopic procedure suites, imaging suites, integrated Prep / recovery suites, with common public processing and support services forms the central core of the layout along with diagnostic services at the lower level and the Inpatient platform in the upper levels. These are newly built as two floors which has 120 inpatient beds and 80 intensive care beds. The outpatient platform forms the face of the institution, being the first, in line of the activity flow. The linear horizontal design format of these platforms took a break with the introduction of gentle curved forms of the convention/learning center which accommodates 3 auditoriums (of varied capacities), an open curved verandah along the entry of these auditoriums and the open design approach allows this space to be transformed into Display /Exhibition spaces when required. This platform is not only well connected with the others but also has a direct access from the main gate to enable the uninterrupted public / traffic flow during any convention in the campus. The outpatient portals, public amenities and the inpatient way finding systems are organized along a concourse with exposure to natural light and landscaping. An additional block is proposed in close proximity to the existing Inpatient platform to increase the number of beds and to accommodate oncology department with two bunkers. This is a 500 bedded tertiary care hospital with a simple approach in design to create a serene, sustainable and healing environment enveloping the new evolving healthcare trends. This is in compliance the NABH standards, (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers is a constituent board of Quality Council of India).
