Residential Township for TATA smart housing Affordable Residential Development, Chennai-India • 700,000 sq ft of built up area • Housing for 1725 families

Development of the Master Plan

Features of the Master Plan

The evolution of massing on site

Located to the south of Chennai on the Vandalur-Kalembakkam Road, this scheme aims to maximise the site’s potential views/location whilst creating a community based internal space. Consisting of 1725 residential units, this project caters to Chennai’s growing professionals and senior citizens. The scheme includes 1 BHK, 2BHK, 3 BHK, senior living units and a limited number of sky villas. The approach taken by the design team has been to create a development that is contextual and contemporary.

The Green walks

The masterplan for the 15.28 acre site creates multiple courtyards through a ‘ribbon’ like building cluster formation. Inspiration for the ribbon like form came from the meandering rivers as a flow of material and energy that finds its natural path on the landscape. This approach provides an optimised layout of the buildings on the very specific site condition. It breaks down the site into different courtyards, creating more human scale scenarios, whist maximising views and green spaces. The views include a seasonal lake towards the East and a government greenbelt towards the West. Both of these natural features will provide the residents with a connection to Chennai’s beautiful natural landscape and ecology. Internally, the multiple courtyards are connected by a further ribbon landscape that is organic in form and undulating. Each of the landscape courtyards have a particular character to them which vary from outdoor sports/ children’s play areas to flower gardens/outdoor seating. As a result the landscape ribbon will become a connector through the centre of the scheme that bring opportunities to socialize, meet up, play, exercise, read, and contemplate and many more activities. Furthermore, the landscape element will follow soft contours and transitions towards the more rectilinear residential blocks. From the flats above the landscape ribbon can be seen as a beautiful organic park that creates a natural connection between inside / outside.

X – BLOCK Planet 3 Studios reiterates radical design expertise with daring addition to a Mumbai college campus Taking forward the progressive education agenda of the institute, this significant new addition to a larger engineering college campus is an adaptive-reuse through interiors of a pre-existing industrial structure that has been retrofitted into a very unusual learning facility. Enthused by the success of their earlier designed building, the educators and the students unanimously elected to have us design this additional 35,000 sq ft space. We hope that this project will go on to establish the fact that building typologies have to evolve to keep pace with changing needs and design can truly contribute towards communicating and establishing progressive ideas. There is after all no better proof of intention that the built form.

Derivation of Architectural form-

ECHOES Built form can inform, engage, and delight. This building presents a significant opportunity to draw from the legacy and traditions of religious architecture in India and express in a contemporary context. This building is of memory and recall, teasing and tempting the eye to wonder as it wanders. Program elements are coalesced in blocks that engage in a delightful sculptural dialogue around a walkable central core. A reimagined Indian jaali is the permeable skin that allows the building to breathe.

Mochamojo cafe detailed drawings and site execution Bandra, Mumbai, India 2550 sq ft A well known chain of coffee shops distinguished by a distinct, eclectic kind of interiors wanted to up-end the experience for its patrons at one of the outlets. A brand and space quality perception study conducted by our studio involving patrons, management and employees provided interesting pointers to the way forward. Chor bazaar chic seemed to work well only up to a point and beyond that the cognitive dissonance of reconciling second hand furniture with quality experience was testing customer approval. We understood that at its essence, the experience hinged on period evocation. By reorienting the entire concept towards the exuberant, visually exciting and easily recognizable 70s, we drew from retro references and interpreted them in a contemporary context. By researching art, graphics, colour palettes, finishes, furniture, wall treatments, tiles, window dressings, interior styles, lighting and more, we created a library of sorts to be mined for inspiration.

Design Development for an ultra premium residential tower

Softwares Used- Rhinoceros, T-splines for Rhino

Mumbai, India

180, 000 sq ft

The design of this ultra premium residential development in a Mumbai suburb is a big bold attempt at rewriting the rules for such projects in India. It embraces the subliminal associations of opulence that Indians naturally make with ornament and dramatic design gestures reminiscent of palaces and temples. The design does this in a thoroughly contemporary context, integrating international influences, cutting edge building technology and innovative use of materials. Solid surface acrylic is used liberally in the interiors of lobbies and common areas. Sculpted columns, undulating surfaces, dramatic ceilings, custom created chandeliers and surreal wall treatments, all enhance the design experience of the building in its entirety. Stainless steel complements solid surface acrylic and is used to create a monumental entranceway and a contemporary interpretation of a local ‘jali’ screen skin for the parking at every floor. Sculptural steel ribbon railings attached to glass at balconies are just one more touch of whimsy. This is going to be the first fully steel framed residential building in India. With considerably smaller column and beam sizes and completely column-free floor-plates, it will allow residents far greater flexibility in rearranging interior layouts as per preference or shifting needs. Embedded technology and a common interface will allow residents to be connected virtually as well, enabling community creation in multiple ways. In keeping with the path-breaking nature of the development, custom engineered elements will bring delight and pride of ownership to residents. The entranceway to the car lift at ground level is blanked by a water screen that will stop instantly on recognising an approaching vehicle and couple of water spouts that move to tell time in the landscaped area are such small design touches that make living there special.

Panoramic Views Karnala, Mumbai, India 200,000 sq ft Planet 3 Studios Architecture Pvt. Ltd. designs a hotel with a clever twist Mumbai firm Planet 3 Studios Architecture Pvt. Ltd. wins an invited competition for the design of the new Panoramic Hotel at Karnala, in India. Their dramatic, spiraling design won approval on its ability to maximise views into the lush green surroundings that form a local bird sanctuary. While local building codes restricted the structure to ground plus one floor, the client requirement of an iconic property that combined the best of a dispersed format resort and a monolithic hotel provided the point of inspiration for this remarkable design. Radiating from a central core with restaurants, spa, health club, cafĂŠ, a large pool and suites on the upper level, five arms extend into the landscape with out-facing rooms on two floors. Balconies connected with each room have privacy and a unique view of the outdoors. The building skin engineered in horizontal louvers to moderate harsh tropical sun. At night, some of these louvers will light up in subtle colours, suggesting magical lanterns that float in air.

EVOLO SKYSCRAPER Design Competition

Softwares Used- Sketchup, Vray, Photoshop

2009

This skyscraper exudes what India as a national collective conscience, loves most, the spices in our lives…the ‘MASALA’ of having it all. It’s an all inclusive, maximally chromatic approach to life at large. From class to crass, everything blends seamlessly to form the urban fabric. The skyscraper seeks to constructively provide the city with saleable plots that can be custom built upon, with specific public needs addressed at various levels and a complex structural system that would allow physical growth as per evolving needs. Its roots or cores derive from the corridors of the existing city, converging and rising towards the sky, in a complex network of intersections of service and commutation cores. And it doesn’t grow all of a sudden, neither out of berserk chase of profit making goof-ups nor idiosyncratic philanthropies. It grows out of an agglomeration of preceding models surrounding the site growing around a focal point. So the urban fabric does not shoot up the sky from one Monday morning boardroom-studio meeting. It is built first in acceptable scales, gradually shifting upwards. We have understood and appreciate the fact that the nation is on a verge of a ‘Grey-Revolution’. It’s our choice how we welcome this chance of a century. Do we must keep dolling-up decaying souls of the cities, or accept who we are and how we see towards life? Why can’t we have peaceful sustainable urban fabric based on the sustainable local models and yet be a brand in ourselves? It starts with a strong belief after all… And a clear cut realistic imagery of the fantasies deep within. The ‘MASALA-SCRAPER’ is born.

Investigating anarchic landscapes in an ecological context

The flora and founa of Brownsea Island

This project is aimed towards criticizing the mundane nature of contemporary urban landscape. These space are attributed to specific behaviour and are constantly monitored by capitalist forces to maintain the law and order. The pathways on Island

The project is situated on island of Brownsea in Poole Harbour on south coast of England. It is a nature reserve and represents a strong ecosystem with minimum human intervention - thanks to its last owner Mrs. Mary Christie. In an extreme contrast, the island is placed against sandbanks which boasts most expensive real estate in UK. The site is analysed on three ecological levels; environmental ecology, mental ecology and social ecology. The failing junctions within these ecologies are recognised and architectural interventions are proposed to re-engineer their failure.

The project progresses by constructing a narrative around the historical character of Mrs. Christie who lived alone on island from 1927 to 1960. She was infamous for her hatred for civilisation and eccentric love for nature. She took up the massive task of building habitats for endangered squirrels and birds on the island. She nurtured the growth of acoustic follies, enchanted forests, floating archipelagos and refuting fortresses. The world without human intervention. Nature is allowed to take over the architecture and both are allowed to grow in abundance. I started recording my research and design in a journal. As I started developing narrative, I made journal part of the narrative. Following are excerpts from the journal
