FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
In my email folder, I have a folder titled Good News. It serves as a collection of emails and announcements that make me say “wow!” They range from a neighbor or civic leader sharing a story about an amazing encounter with an Archbishop Mitty student, or an update on an alum who is doing incredibly meaningful work in the world. On days that really challenge me, I run to these testaments of the greatness of AMHS.
So as I spent one afternoon reading through every word of our Summer 2024 Mitty Magazine issue, I found myself exclaiming “wow!” repeatedly. Every single story and image is good news worthy. From the brilliance and jubilance of the Class of 2024, to seeing our very own Monarch, Conor Sherry ’19, on the big screen, to the overwhelming enthusiasm shown by so many other alumni who return to campus to share their career journeys and help current Monarchs find their paths, our Archbishop Mitty community is bursting with goodness. The rearticulation of our charism this past year has inspired members of our community to connect with God through the Sacrament of Confirmation, and champion cultural faith celebrations that harken back to centuries ago. The ongoing dedication of our volunteers, donors, and parents of alumni who continue to support AMHS long after their time here fills me with hope and joy for our future.
If I could package this entire magazine into my email folder, I would; but fortunately I have the great honor of being present to all this goodness up close and personal each and every day. And so I offer this deeply-felt “Thank you” to all of you for committing to bring forth such goodness into the world. Today’s world is complicated and sometimes, it seems, good news is hard to come by. This year, as we celebrate the sixty-year legacy of Archbishop Mitty, let us all take a long and pensive look around; and let us remember that we all, together, shape a community that speaks to the Good News. It is this sacramental offering that inspires me every single day. So may God bless you and your families immensely this year and thank you for being the best of AMHS.
With deepest gratitude,
Latanya (Johnson ’92) Hilton President
Dear Friends,
My favorite day of every school year is, hands down, the first day of school. The newness, the excitement, the unparalleled joy of reuniting following the summer hiatus - all of it - provides a palpable energy that fuels so much of what we do at Archbishop Mitty High School. I look forward to that magic each fall.
My second favorite day of the school year is graduation, for similar reasons. The excitement of what is new to come for our graduates, the celebration of so much accomplished over a very short four years, and the reconnection with our alumni who return to Fr. Jack Russi Field to honor the newest members of the alumni community - all of itdraws to a close yet another chapter in the chronicles of Archbishop Mitty High School.
This issue of the Mitty Magazine shares a glimpse into this year’s graduation ceremony and the many accomplishments of the Class of 2024. (There are many, many to recognize.) It also highlights some of the special moments that connect my two favorite days of each year. I find it fitting that our featured article in this issue is entitled, “Finding Your Path,” as it is a remarkable path that we take each year to connect my two favorite days, and this issue captures so much of what we found this year along the way.
From our Board of Regents and dedicated alumni reimagining our corporate internship program into an even more dynamic and innovative opportunity for our students to yet another historic night to be a Monarch, as our men’s and women’s soccer programs collect Division I NorCal Championships on the same evening to our annual Confirmation celebration to yet another Monarch finding his place on the big screen to our Santo Niño de Cebu Mass, and a return to an in person Mitty Auction, the pages of this issue walk you along the path of another extraordinary year at Archbishop Mitty High School, showcasing so many members of our community finding and sharing their paths.
I hope you will take some time to stroll through the year on these pages and see many of the amazing stops along the road that lead us to our annual graduation ceremony. Once again, I am awed by the talent, the creativity, the support, and the love that graces our community.
Thank you for entrusting your children with us, for your belief in the good work done here each day, and for your ongoing support of your alma mater.
May God bless you and your families.
With sincere gratitude,
Katherine Caputo Principal
2024 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF
“Go forth and remember all you have learned here. Then, come back and share with us everything you have seen. Archbishop Mitty will always be your home.” – Latanya (Johnson ’92) Hilton, AMHS President
Each year, five seniors are presented with special awards at graduation. We are pleased to introduce these Monarchs and share some of their many accomplishments.
VALEDICTORIAN TEBIN KIM
This year’s recipient of the Valedictorian Award is Tebin Kim. Tebin is equally at home in the sciences and the humanities, allowing her to craft beautiful masterpieces with equal dexterity in words, numbers, and more traditional artistic mediums.
In four years at Archbishop Mitty, Tebin has maintained a 4.72 academic grade point average while taking 13 Advanced Placement courses, and in every course she has taken at Mitty, she’s earned a grade of “A.” She has been honored with AMHS Departmental Certificates in English, Science, Social Studies, and Religious Studies. She has also been recognized as a Medallion winner in academic departments such as English, Science, and Social Studies; as well as the medallion winner in Student Government; and she is a three-time recipient of the school’s General Excellence Award. Tebin has been named an AP Scholar with Distinction by the College Board for her record of achievement on AP exams as well as a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.
She is a member of the Campus Ministry LIFE Corps. During her junior year, Tebin participated in the school’s ECJ California class. She also shared her exceptional artistic abilities with our community by crafting the six illustrative posters, which now adorn the walls of classrooms across the campus, to represent each element of the school’s charism. Tebin is a four-year member of the school’s cross country and track and field teams and a four-year member of student government, serving in her freshman and sophomore years as her class’ media coordinator, last year as the junior class president, and this year as the ASB Media Coordinator.
Tebin will be sharing her many talents with the student body at Williams College, where she will be studying Biology and Political Economy in the fall.
SALUTATORIAN ADVAY ARAVIND
The Salutatorian for the Class of 2024 is Advay Aravind. Advay brings a superior intellect to all that he undertakes. In his four years at Archbishop Mitty, he has maintained an academic GPA of 4.756, having taken and received an “A” in 13 different Advanced Placement classes. In fact, in every single course he has taken over the past four years, he has earned an “A.” He has been named by The College Board as an AP Scholar with Distinction and as a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. He has been recognized with AMHS Departmental Certificates in English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Advay is a two-time recipient of the school’s prestigious General Excellence Award; and as a senior, he was recently named the Department Medallion recipient in World Languages.
Advay is a member of the Speech and Debate Team. He serves as the VicePresident of the Physics Club and as a quantum computing member of the Computer Science Club. Advay researched and coded a 15+ layer AI for dynamic computer vision and natural language processing. He started designing explainability code to interpret model behavior for humans.
Advay uses his talents in service to the greater community. He founded a STEM tutoring service in India for impoverished 8-10th graders with incarcerated parents. He leads the program, tutoring 9th and 10th graders weekly via Zoom, providing support and resources for their STEM studies. In his spare time, Advay is a classical pianist and a first degree black belt in Taekwondo. Advay will be attending the University of California Berkeley in the fall, where he plans to major in Physics.
ROMERO AWARD RIA SUDHIR
The Romero award, named for the former Salvadoran Archbishop Óscar Romero, who fought and died for the cause of social justice, draws our attention to the core of the mission of Archbishop Mitty High School by recognizing a graduating senior who is deeply committed to the Campus Ministry program and serves those in need through a keen awareness of social justice in our society and throughout the world.
Our award winner this year is Ria Sudhir. Ria is a scholar and seeker. In her time at Archbishop Mitty, she has embodied the ideal of a “faith that does justice” like Oscar Romero boldly exemplifies.
As a four year member of Mitty Advocacy Project, and elected by her peers as co-president this year, Ria has steered a dynamic, justice-minded group of young people towards understanding current policies and advocating for emerging reform related to issues such as environmental justice, common sense gun reform, ethical housing policies, mental health awareness, education reform, and immigration justice. Not only does Ria stand as a fierce advocate for a more just world, she does so with the same spirit of Oscar Romero, which is to say, she does so with a sense of hope and a spirit of joy.
In addition to her advocacy, Ria has also served as a member of the LIFE Corps leadership team where she opens up honestly about her faith and models faith exploration to her peers through retreat leadership. Her leadership has extended outside our community as she served with many important organizations like Civics Unplugged and Friends with Special Needs. Ria’s heart for justice always pushes her to extend the circle of kinship wider. Ria will continue to nurture these values as she attends the University of California at Berkeley and studies Political Economy this fall.
THE REGENTS’ AWARDS
The Archbishop Mitty High School Board of Regents honors two seniors each year at graduation in recognition of overall achievement. The recipients of this award demonstrate academic achievement and excellence in a wide range of activities on campus and uphold the values and ideals of the school.
JENIKA S. FERNANDO
This year’s Regents’ Award is presented to Jenika S. Fernando. Within the classroom, Jenika has shown herself to be a genuine scholar. She has filled her schedule each year with rigorous academic coursework as well as classes in the performing arts. She has undertaken a series of college prep, honors, and Advanced Placement courses as a Monarch. As a junior, she participated in the ECJ Jamaica course and immersion trip. She is a four-year member of the Honor Roll, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation.
Jenika has immersed herself into the Performing Arts Program, emerging as a star performer. She is a four-year member of the Jazz Choir, and for the past three years, has been a lead vocalist for Exodus. Whether it be Cady in Mean Girls, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, or Olive in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Jenika enchanted us as a lead performer in numerous productions. Last year, she was an instructor for San Jose Children’s Musical Theater’s summer program, and in 2020, Jenika created the performance group entitled “Jamming with Jenika.” She presently teaches vocals, piano, and ukulele for the PNC Music Company.
Jenika is also a member of the Campus Ministry LIFE Corps where she has served the Archbishop Mitty community by sharing her reflection at this year’s Thanksgiving liturgy. What’s more, Jenika serves as an Archbishop Mitty Admissions Ambassador and as a volunteer with “Sleeping Bags for the Homeless of Silicon Valley.” Jenika has chosen to continue her scholarship and her performance at The UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television this coming fall.
ANDERSON WALKER
The Regents’ Award is also presented to Anderson Walker. Anderson is an amazing young man who has embraced life at Archbishop Mitty as fully as anyone.
Along the way, his academic performance has been exceptional. As a junior, he participated in the ECJ South Africa course; and his artistic skills were made evident by his development of the artwork for the Campus Ministry annual liturgical theme.
Outside of the classroom, Anderson has been a four-year member of Student Government, having received the Student Government Award his sophomore year, and this year serving as Senior Class President. He is a leader of “The Pit,” visible and enthusiastic in his support of the Monarchs on the field of play. For the past two years, he has served as an Open House Ambassador; and this year, he was a featured speaker at the Prospective Student Information Night. He has also been a Visit Mitty Tour Guide during his junior and senior years.
As a LIFE Corps Member within Campus Ministry, Anderson serves as a retreat leader and a speaker at school-wide celebrations, including this year’s Thanksgiving Liturgy. He is also a member of the Cards for Cali Club, a group that takes the time to write cards of support to cancer survivors across the state. And he is a three-year member of the Men’s Varsity Volleyball Team.
Anderson will pack his energy, enthusiasm, and insights off to the University of Wisconsin at Madison in the fall.

FINDING YOUR PATH
A History of The Archbishop Mitty Corporate Internship Program
By Panayiota Good ’17 - Director of Communications
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” The question starts out as a playful one from mom or dad at the first sign of interest in astronauts, superheroes, or professional sports. It could be anything. A school bus driver? A doctor? A magician? The wonder in this question evolves into a more serious thought as children mature into adolescents and eventually young adults. The once far off daydream will turn into a pivotal chapter of introspection, prompting especially those in high school to question their passions, ambitions, and the daunting reality of carving out an individual path in the world.
From the innocent dreams of childhood to the heavier decisions of adulthood, the question remains, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Wouldn’t it be nice if, somewhere along the way, there was an opportunity to put your skills and strengths to the test in the working world? In 1998, members of the Archbishop Mitty High School Board of Regents developed the Corporate Internship Program. The Archbishop Mitty Corporate Internship Program was designed to offer a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable experience outside of the classroom, in corporate and professional environments throughout Silicon Valley.
History
Developed under the leadership of former Board of Regents member and parent of alumni George Monk, † this internship program was aimed at providing juniors and seniors with corporate experience to help them determine their career goals. According to Anne Crowley, Chair of the Internship Committee from 20102016, George Monk coordinated the first professional workshops along with Beth Madia, Kate Caputo, and members of the Board of Regents. Aside from hosting interview and resume-building workshops, other pillars of support from the Board of Regents Corporate Internship Committee included soliciting parents or corporations to provide corporate opportunities, managing marketing campaigns, and generating the application process for students year after year.
A member of the Board of Regents from 2006-2012, Lewis Chew often led the interview and selection process as well the outreach involved in partnering with corporations throughout his time on the committee. “The selection process [for internships],” Chew recalls, “was based on teacher recommendations, application, workshop attendance, and GPA as well as company/ opportunity match.” However, those who were not placed still walked away with a strong resume and interview experience with C-level executives.
“Lessons like not receiving an internship opportunity after going through the process are valuable to life,” says Chew.
In just over 20 years, the Archbishop Mitty Corporate Internship program placed more than 500 students with various corporations including NASA, Clorox, National Semiconductor, Ebay, Meta, Synopsis, NDS Surgical, SoloPower, Churchill Construction, HP, and PowerPersonell.
The Students’ Experience
Students who were placed in corporate environments learned how to behave like professionals. Rose Bueno ’16 was one of many student participants of the Corporate Internship Program. During her time as a student at Archbishop Mitty, Rose had a strong work ethic. She was a member of the Speech & Debate team and Archbishop Mitty’s Sketch Comedy team, Pardon My French, she held a job outside of school, and she even had internship experience before applying to the Corporate Internship Program. Interested in pursuing a career in entertainment, Rose was matched with Discovery Girls, a magazine focused on advice, encouragement, and inspiration for girls ages 8-12. As a General Intern, she performed duties such as file management, writing, and editing for the magazine.
Beyond the administrative work, there were other parts of the job that stood out to the high school student, one of the most memorable tasks being the Discovery Girls Tween Summit. The Summit was a casting call for girls from cities all over North America. Models were included in photoshoots, interviews, and various activities to provide content for each magazine issue. “There were a lot of interesting, perhaps difficult, personalities,” says Bueno, “some more pleasant than others.” Rose is grateful to have gotten to work around casting directors, producers, as well as talent so early in her career.
“
As someone who now works with a huge range of personalities in entertainment, I don’t think I realized how valuable learning to navigate those interpersonal relationships would be. ”
Rose Bueno ’16
Rose graduated from the University of Southern California in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and Media Studies–and three more internships under her belt. She now works in Burbank, California as a script coordinator at Lucasfilm Ltd., a Northern California-based production company founded by filmmaker George Lucas (known for films such as Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark). Rose credits these early internship experiences for her openness to working with all kinds of professionals, “As someone who now works with a huge range of personalities in entertainment, I don’t think I realized how valuable learning to navigate those interpersonal relationships would be.” Bueno’s journey, from her internship with Discovery Girls to her current role at Lucasfilm Ltd., exemplifies the program’s impact
How the Corporate Internship Program “became” Pathfinders
With stories like Rose’s in mind, members of the Board of Regents spent countless hours dedicated to soliciting parents and corporations for internship opportunities year after year. Looking back, Lewis Chew and Anne Crowley point to logistics like transportation and lack of available compensation as roadblocks for both the Internship Committee and the corporations involved. In 2018, student interest in the Corporate Internship Program was decreasing, and the committee was faced with transitioning the program to enrich students in a new way.
Sruthi Ramaswami ‘12 was a member of the Board of Regents from 2018-2024. She was heavily involved in the transition of the Corporate Internship Program from a pre-pandemic to a post-pandemic program. She explained that efforts were made to transition the program to focus solely on the skills-based workshops after COVID-19. Ultimately, John Gilmore along with members of the corporate internship and career education committees decided that it would be of greater value to expand upon another pre-existing, on-campus program that engaged alumni sharing their career stories: the Annual Career Symposium.
Re-branded with a new name, Pathfinders, in Fall 2023, two types of career exploration events are hosted twice yearly by the Counseling Department and the Alumni Office to blend the conversation between what Archbishop Mitty alumni are doing professionally and the path they took to get there. Alumni with careers in a variety of fields are invited back to campus for Discovery Sessions, a chance to sit on an interview panel, host a brief Q&A with students in breakout groups, and allow students the opportunity to network with them. Illustrating the scene on campus, Sruthi said, “Classrooms overflow, and kids get firsthand experience at a ‘job fair’ scene.”
The annual Career Symposium, held in the Thomas Kinkade Center for the Arts, features a moderated panel of alumni who share their often varied and non-linear career journeys. As our alumni inspire the next generation of Monarchs, they also benefit from attending Pathfinders events. It is an opportunity for graduates to return to campus, engage with the current student body, and feel valued by this community.
Archbishop Mitty High School is eternally grateful to the Board of Regents, the Corporate Internship Committee, and all volunteers who dedicated their time and efforts to the Corporate Internship Program so that students could continue asking themselves, “Is this what I want to be when I grow up?” for more than 20 years. Pathfinders continues in this legacy of career exploration by connecting Monarchs, past and present, and fostering mentorship among our alumni.
AMHS alumni are encouraged to return to campus and share their experience in our Pathfinders Career Exploration Program. Please contact alumni@mitty.com for more information.

A HISTORIC SATURDAY FOR MONARCH SOCCER
By Patrick Kennedy - Assistant Athletic Director
The men’s and women’s soccer teams had an incredible winter season this year, culminating in the first NorCal championships for both programs on the last Saturday of the season. Archbishop Mitty is the first high school to win both men’s and women’s soccer NorCal titles at the Division One level in the same year.
After beating St. Francis High School in the CCS championship game, the men’s soccer team earned the number one overall seed in the NorCal Division 1 bracket. The Monarchs won their first two games in the NorCal tournament, setting up a rematch versus St. Francis for the championship game at home on Fr. Jack Russi Field. After falling behind 1-0, the Monarchs evened the score at 1-1 in the 45th minute when Manny Portillo ’24 scored. St. Francis reclaimed the lead on a free kick in the 54th minute, and the championship looked to be heading to St. Francis until Giuseppe Sigala ’24 scored in the 80th minute to send the game into penalty kicks.
The Monarchs won by outscoring St. Francis 4-1 in penalty kicks. Alan Quintero ’24, who earlier had been named the WCAL goalkeeper of the year, ensured the match would head to PK’s with a clutch save in the final minute, and then blocked two of St. Francis’ three penalty kicks. When talking about the moment after the game, Sigala said, “That was so special. One of the best moments of my life.” It was indeed one of the best moments in the history of Monarch men’s soccer and capped an incredible season that will not soon be forgotten. The team finished with a record of 20-2-4.
Later that evening, despite the rain and wind in Loomis, California, the women’s team battled Del Oro High School to a 0-0 tie in regulation. After both teams made their first three penalty kicks, the Monarchs made their fourth and Del Oro missed. Angie Cao ’26 then delivered a kick to the upper right corner of the net to secure the 5-3 victory for the Monarchs.
In poor weather conditions, Monarchs head coach JT Hanley described his team’s great effort in the win, “Total team effort against a very organized defense. Kiki Vostermans ’24 and Murphy Walsh ’25 were workhorses in the midfield, and Jordan Geis ’24 put in another huge shift. Megan Haniger ’24 led a great, organized back line, and Elisabeth Bray ’24 made three important saves in the second half.”
It was a long bus ride back from Del Oro for the Monarchs, but the feeling of having won a championship made the trip fly by. Having won three games in five days in the NorCal Playoffs after a long season of 24 matches, Coach Hanley described the mood on the bus as a “mixture of euphoria, relief and achievement for reaching their goals in a tough environment that challenged the team to compete at the highest level.” The women’s team finished the season with a record of 21-2-1, and was ranked #1 in California by MaxPreps. It was a fitting ending for the senior class of women’s soccer players. Seven members of the senior class won an epic CCS Open Division championship as freshmen on the varsity team during the COVID-shortened season of 2021 (when there was not a NorCal championship) and finished their Monarch careers as NorCal champions.
C onne Cting with g od through C onfirmation
By Marian Wyman ’14 - Campus Ministry Associate
In April, Archbishop Mitty proudly celebrated the Confirmation of 67 Monarchs — 66 students and one faculty member — as full members of the Catholic Church. Bishop Oscar Cantú presided over the liturgy, and in his homily he reminded us that God desires closeness with each one of us. In Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, we’re able to see exactly this: God reaches out to us. God wants to be a part of our lives. It is up to us to welcome God’s grace into our hearts.
One of three of the Catholic Church’s Sacraments of initiation, Confirmation complements Baptism and First Holy Communion by sealing each candidate with the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, courage, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Of course, the Holy Spirit does not only shape us through the Sacrament, but rather, has been at work in the hearts and minds of our 67 candidates for all their lives. As Pope Francis shared in 2021, evangelization and catechesis is “not about filling an empty container; it is ultimately about bringing to light what God has already begun to accomplish.”
“
God reaches out to us. God wants to be a part of our lives. It is up to us to welcome God's grace into our hearts. ”
In a special way, it is the fervent hope of our Church that the Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens and emboldens these preexisting gifts so that the candidates may be prepared for a lifelong journey of faith. We pray, for example, that they may practice wisdom, seeing with the eyes of God when met with a new horizon; that they may value piety, participating in the sacramental life of the Church with joy; and that they embody a fear (really, “awe”) of the Lord, recognizing that God’s love is abundant, mysterious, and vast — and the only worthwhile response to such a recognition is awestruck gratitude. Each candidate, upon their anointing with chrism by Bishop Cantú, created a welcome place for God in their hearts.
Bishop Oscar Cantú
A special addition to this year’s Confirmation celebration was the reception of the Sacrament by Mrs. Erika Vetter, a member of our World Languages faculty. While in most years our candidates are all students, it is always a gift for our faculty and staff to participate in our Sacramental formation. With the support of Mrs. Kristin Byrnes, our Coordinator for Adult Spirituality, Mrs. Vetter prepared for the Sacrament
and celebrated with the rest of our candidates at our shared liturgy. When asked why she decided to be Confirmed this year, Mrs. Vetter responded, “I was delayed in receiving my Sacraments. When my friends were Confirmed in eighth grade, the hurdles felt insurmountable, especially with a mandatory retreat I couldn't afford. Over the years, I wanted to resume the process, but I wasn't sure how, especially as a college student and later as an adult. Then, on my first day working at Archbishop Mitty, I sat in the chapel surrounded by the other new hires with tears streaming down my face as Mrs. Byrnes shared about the school's adult spirituality offerings. I am confident God had a hand in my finally receiving this Sacrament.”
As Mrs. Vetter explains, for her and for all our candidates this year, the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation brings to light the longstanding and continuing work of God in our human lives. It is a common misunderstanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation that it acts a “finish line” of sorts: that after its reception, each candidate is a fully formed and matured Catholic whose faith has been claimed in a final way. As our candidates learned this year, in conversation with their sponsors and in reflection during our formation process, Confirmation is much more of a “starting line.” Each day forward, as Confirmed members of the Catholic Church, these 67 Monarchs are called to continue living out the call of Jesus, sharing the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and being sources of God’s love in their daily living. The journey of faith is unending, and through their experience of the Sacrament of Confirmation, we are confident that these 67 Monarchs will take that journey with hearts always open to God.
Monarchs in Movies
By Doug Santana - Director of Performing Arts
Archbishop Mitty’s Theater Arts Program has several alumni that you can see on the big screen as actors in the film and television industry. The newest addition to this impressive collection of alumni is Conor Sherry ’19, who recently starred in the coming-of-age feature film, Snack Shack. Director of Performing Arts, Mr. Doug Santana, had the opportunity to catch up with him in between promotional appearances in Los Angeles.
Mr. Santana: Congratulations, Conor, on your work in Snack Shack and the great reception the movie has gotten, including Critics Pick from The New York Times! How did your time at Archbishop Mitty prepare you for where you are now in your career as an actor?
Conor: I owe much of my success in Hollywood to the opportunities and experiences I had throughout my busy four years at Archbishop Mitty. I’ve always been ambitious and confident, ever since I could walk, but my years as a Monarch were the most pivotal. From day one, I was immersed into a community that nurtured my passion across a spectrum of interests. Archbishop Mitty empowered me to fearlessly explore opportunities, fail forward, hone my abilities, and most importantly, how to be a winner. Whether I was performing in a state of the art musical, winning a national title in Speech and Debate, or opening for Jay Leno at the AMHS Black and Gold Gala, two things were always consistent: opportunity and growth. The list of faculty that had profound impacts on me is far too long for this interview, which is precisely what makes Archbishop Mitty so special. It’s not one standalone teacher or coach, rather it's the entire community that makes up the magical place we all call “Mitty.”
Mr. Santana: What was the experience like filming a movie based on the childhood of your director in his own hometown?
Conor: Filming Snack Shack was a deeply personal experience, as it was based on our director Adam Rehmeier's childhood growing up in Nebraska City, NE in the 90’s. From the very start, Adam encouraged us to find our characters within ourselves, rather than imitating real-life individuals. Basically giving us the freedom to be ourselves within the character. Shooting in Nebraska City, where Adam grew up, added a layer of intimacy and authenticity to the film that was beyond priceless. Most of my prep before shooting consisted of walking the same streets Adam walked in 1991 and blasting his 90’s playlist of straight bangers. My co-star Gabriel LaBelle and I also got to run around the town for two weeks before we started production. We worked at the real present-day snack shack, serving real Nebraska kids hot dogs at the pool, and basically hanging out with the locals.
Mr. Santana: Having watched the film, there are undeniably some moments that our audiences will recognize as vintage Conor Sherry comedy. Can you tell us about how you were able to collaborate with the director on these scenes?
Conor: Oh yes, Mr. Santana’s and Mr. and Mrs. Cruz’s fingerprints were all over my performance in Snack Shack, especially in terms of the physical comedy. There’s one scene where I fall down a flight of stairs trying to get to the ringing, corded home phone (ask your parents… it was the 90’s). Anyway, on the first take I just tripped a little bit, but as we kept doing takes, in true Conor fashion, feeding off the silent laughs of the camera crew, I fell harder and harder. By the time we filmed the shot that made it in the movie, I was full blown throwing myself down the stairs and contorting in every direction. People on set kept asking me how I knew how to do that, and I said “That was nothing, you should've seen me in One Man, Two Guvnors at my high school when I was 17.”
Mr. Santana: It was such a special experience to watch the film at a screening in San Jose with so many of your family and friends in attendance. What was that like for you?
Conor: The experience was overwhelmingly rewarding and deeply poignant for me. Growing up, my family was not wealthy. My childhood, especially my high school years, relied heavily on the generosity of financial aid programs and unwavering support from numerous communities. Bringing together those who believed in me, or at least believed in providing equal opportunities, into one movie theater to watch Snack Shack felt like a true gift. It was as if the movie itself served as a thank-you note, symbolizing the impact each person in that theater had on me during my most formative years.
Having many of the Archbishop Mitty administration in attendance, alongside Mr. Santana and Mr. and Mrs. Cruz, surpassed all my expectations. It went beyond simply watching a really good film (I am biased… but The New York Times liked it also). Rather, the screening felt like a tribute to the collective journey and work of everyone present. At the end, I tried to give a thank you speech, but I hardly lasted one sentence looking at hundreds of people that supported me. I think it was an emotional experience for everyone.
Mr. Santana: What advice do you have for any of our current students and alumni who are looking to follow in your footsteps?
Conor: I think the main thing would be to always be your own biggest advocate and know that nobody is ever going to believe in you more than you believe in yourself. Write down your goals (and put them on the wall in your room). Trust your gut, and if you find good people at any level who support you, hold onto them. And while you're at Mitty, do everything!!
EDUCATION THROUGH ACTIVITY
By Greg Walker - Director of Student Activities
Each year, the Student Activities Department collaborates with Student Government members to curate activities and events aimed at cultivating strong school spirit across the community. These events are developed during a leadership course attended by Student Government members, empowering them to engage the student body with enjoyable and impactful activities. Through these activities, students not only forge friendships and cherish memories, but also acquire fundamental skills that can be applied well beyond their high school years.
As Student Government members are the ones doing much of the planning, it is incumbent upon them to learn leadership and time management skills. Being creative, working in a group environment, and the art of compromise and collaboration are traits that will carry them into success through college and then into adulthood. Teaching concepts such as punctuality, accountability, and vulnerability through fun events creates a better sense of buy-in, and fosters the belief that what they envision can be made into something tangible for others to see and enjoy. The experience profoundly impacts young people and gives each student leader a heightened sense of self-confidence and belief in what is possible. We would not be able to pull off Spirit Week or Monarch Madness without the dedication of these students, and they are learning as they make these events a reality.
The same can be said for club leadership. The club structure at Archbishop Mitty High School supports more than 50 clubs annually to provide educational experiences for members surrounding common interests, open discussions, and events. Club leadership have the ability to advertise over morning announcements, create print and/or digital content, invite guest speakers, and even perform for their peers. With the vast array of club options, students learn that what is important to them as individuals can bring the community together and allow students to find their place (and their people) on campus.
Keeping in mind that the social lives of our students are ever-changing, this on-campus focus on enrichment can be a powerful outlet to their already stress-filled lives. Whether it be filling the cheering section for a sporting event, or taking pictures with friends during Spirit Week, or coming to one of the four dances we have each year, Student Activities gives students opportunities for fellowship and some much-needed downtime. Combine the nighttime events with club meetings, donuts and hot chocolate before school, a spikeball tournament during lunch, or cotton candy after school, students look forward to these opportunities away from exam prep and college applications.
Rising senior Jayden Brown ’25 shared her thoughts on learning through the lens of Student Activities. “My three years in Student Government have been a transformative journey, imbued with invaluable lessons in leadership. Within its nurturing environment, I’ve gleaned insights from the complex dynamics of teamwork, communication, and decision-making. In navigating the many trials and pitfalls that comes with guiding and representing a group, I’ve learned more about myself and my peers. As I continue my journey, I know that making mistakes is inevitable. However, a crucial lesson I’ve absorbed from the leaders preceding me is that it’s not just okay, but actually cool, to genuinely care about others and the activities we are involved in. I am forever grateful for Student Government and its opportunities and lessons that have shaped my perspective and character today.”
The Student Activities department is a testament to Archbishop Mitty High School’s commitment to educating the whole student. We hope that through their involvement in Student Activities, students come away learning valuable lessons outside of the classroom. Oftentimes, these will last just as long as the academic takeaways and shape who these students will ultimately become.
Student Government members are pictured in some of the many activities they help to organize throughout the school year, including Freshman Orientation, Monarch Madness, and our annual Christmas Rally.
Embracing Unity and Faith Monarchs Initiate Cultural Celebrations of Faith
By Patsy Vargas - Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Every Thursday morning before classes begin, the Archbishop Mitty High School community is invited to attend morning mass. This year, the DEI Program worked closely with Campus Ministry, the Latinx Student Union (LSU), the Black Student Union (BSU), and the Filipinx Association Student Association (FASA) to highlight Catholic celebrations unique to Latino, Black, and Filipino communities.
In November, the Black Student Union celebrated a special mass in honor of Black Catholic History month to recognize the important contributions of Black Catholics to the Church. The voice of award-winning Black gospel singer Yolanda Adams filled the air, a beautiful Kente cloth adorned the altar during Communion, and as a special treat, former school Chaplain Father James Okafor presided over the mass and gave the homily. Reflecting back on her participation in the Mass, senior BSU co-president Lyric Powell ’24, said, “I enjoyed seeing our faculty, staff and administration join us in support and hope to see this mass continue for future BSU members.”
In January, families filled the chapel for the Santo Niño de Cebu Mass. The celebration featured a beautiful procession from the school chapel to the Sobrato Student Life Center. During the procession, a member of FASA carried a statue of the Santo Niño, with families following behind in reverence. Thanks to parent dance coordinator Ann Santos, mother of Ava Santos ’26, families enjoyed watching student performances of traditional Filipino dances, Subli and Tinikling. At the conclusion of the mass and performance, attendees enjoyed an abundance of lumpia and pancit.
On December 12th, the Latinx Student Union held a vibrant celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This day is especially important within the Latino community, as it commemorates the appearance of Juan Diego to the Virgin Mary in what is now Mexico City. LSU students greeted families at the chapel entrance, and prayers of petition were offered in Spanish. A talented trio of LSU students performed “La Guadalupana” on guitar, while others presented red roses to an image of the Virgen de Guadalupe. The celebration concluded with the sharing of pan dulce and hot chocolate in the Monarch Room as the traditional Mexican song, “Las Mañanitas” played in the background.
The AMHS DEI Program continues to provide welcoming spaces of belonging for all students. While club moderators played an integral role in supporting these events, it was the dedicated students of AMHS who took the lead in planning, organizing and delivering these school-wide celebrations of the diversity within our Catholic community. These meaningful celebrations not only bring families together, but also reaffirm our Catholic faith, reminding us of Archbishop Mitty High School’s values. According to the school chaplain, Fr. Francis Kalaw, “Pope Francis shared during the World Day of Peace this year that although we are not all the same in terms of culture, background, and languages, Catholics should rejoice in living this diversity. These liturgical celebrations held this year honor AMHS’ cultural diversity, enrich our faith life, and open our hearts to love one another as Christ showed us.”
AMHS alumni are always welcome back to campus and are invited to partake in our faith celebrations. Please contact DEI@mitty.com for more information.

The highly-anticipated, post-pandemic, in-person return of The Mitty Auction took place on Saturday, April 13th, at MOHI Wine in Morgan Hill to the overwhelming delight of nearly 200 attendees.
Led by dedicated parents and chairpersons Inga and Richard Surprenant (Katrina ‘24 and Irene ‘26), a team of volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Archbishop Mitty Parent Association’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of businesses, individuals, and supporters contributed donations. All net proceeds from both the live and online auctions benefit the Archbishop Mitty General Endowment Fund. Proceeds from the Fund-a-Need appeal will support the tuition assistance program at AMHS. A heartfelt thank you to all for their unwavering support.

The 36th Annual Archbishop Mitty High School Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament was a resounding success, uniting over 190 golfers and more than 20 sponsors on May 6th at the picturesque Cinnabar Hills Golf Club. Golfers enjoyed a beautiful day on the course, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defines the Mitty community. Thanks to the generous contributions, the Alumni Scholarship Endowment continues to thrive, ensuring future Monarchs have access to a quality Catholic education. Here’s to another year of celebrating the unwavering support of our alumni and friends.
The reunion for the Class of 2018 was held at the Market Hall South Beer Garden in San Pedro Square on November 24, 2023. It was an intimate gathering where alumni had the opportunity to reconnect with each other, some of their former teachers, and current staff members. It was a cheerful event that gave alums the opportunity to conclude the Thanksgiving holiday on a high note.
The prize included a Starbucks gift card, as well as some Mitty items such as a scarf, mug, and cheeseboard.
THE DATE FOR YOUR 5 YEAR REUNION. October 5, 2024 during MonarchFest AMHS Campus Check out Mitty Connect for more information.
MEETING BEFORE THE MADNESS
On the evening of Monarch Madness, February 29th, the first program reunion was held for all ASB and Student Government Officers from Archbishop Mitty’s past. The setting was downtown San Jose, just a few blocks from the historic Civic Auditorium. Former representatives from the classes of 1985, 1993, 1995, 2004, 2011, 2013, 2019, and 2021 came together for dinner, then attended The Madness that evening. Ryan Chew ’11, a current member of the AMHS Board of Regents, served as de facto host for the evening, along with Keith Mathews, Vice President for Advancement. By all accounts, it was a joyful evening, with many attendees commenting on the energy and precision of the current students who brought The Madness to life.
The event was part of a new initiative on the part of the Alumni Office: to host program reunions bringing together Monarchs of different graduation years who participated together in a specified program at AMHS, thus reuniting friends who would not attend one another’s traditional class reunions. Share your program reunion ideas on Mitty Connect.
Shannon Self ’95 and John Freitas ’93 share a laugh as they discover that their graduating classes are not far apart.
MONARCH LEADERSHIP SOCIETY AND PRESIDENT’S CIRCLE EVENTS
On February 8, 2024, Archbishop Mitty High School’s most generous donors were invited to campus for the annual Monarch Leadership Society Reception and President’s Circle Dinner. It was an evening honoring those who annually have supported the students, programs, and facilities of AMHS.
Jennifer and Karl Hsu were recognized as the 2024 Benefactors of the Year for giving of their time, talent, and treasure. They have been an instrumental part of the AMHS community, participating fully in the Parent Pledge Program, utilizing corporate matching gifts to increase the impact of their gifts. Jennifer has been a mainstay volunteer of the Parent Association, and together they have attended and supported many AMHS events. Most importantly, they have established the Ringhand-Hsu Endowment, ensuring the legacy of their benefaction lasts forever.
Vice President for Advancement Keith Mathews with Monarch Leadership Society members Jim Fitzgerald and Steve Gera ’68
During the reception in The John A. and Susan Sobrato Science and Student Life Center, endowment benefactors who have made transformative gifts had the opportunity to interact with their student scholarship recipients. Students shared highlights about their day and the programs and activities in which they participate.
Each year, we invite donors to establish scholarship endowments that will ensure that an Archbishop Mitty education remains a reality for families who might not otherwise be able to afford this education or program endowments to provide funding for the programs and services that benefit all of our students. This year, President Latanya (Johnson ‘92) Hilton and Principal Kate Caputo acknowledged three new scholarship endowments. The Springs Family Endowment, the AMHS Legacy Scholarship, and the Zach Smith Memorial Scholarship Endowment.

Senior Sara Castro ’24 delivered a welcome address, sharing her Mitty journey. She has participated in Campus Ministry’s Cornerstone Group and the Interact Club and was a participant on the 2023 ECJ: California immersion trip.
The AMHS Alumni Basketball Games, held on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, showcased the enduring spirit of Monarch basketball. The women’s game, featuring the current varsity team, brought forth a spirited display of talent. The men’s game, which commenced at 6:30 p.m., witnessed the thrilling clash between 17 alumni and the varsity team, resulting in a victory for the varsity squad.
The annual Men’s Soccer Alumni Game, held on November 25, 2023, brought together a vibrant gathering of Monarch soccer enthusiasts. With over 25 AMHS alums taking part in the match or cheering from the sidelines, the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship filled the air. Following the game, the festivities continued with a delightful BBQ lunch, uniting alums, coaches, current players, and their families in the Aymar Events Center for a memorable afternoon of fellowship and reminiscence.
On December 26, 2023, we hosted the annual Women’s Soccer Alumnae Game. The occasion was made even more special with the presence of Olympic gold medalist Brandi Chastain ’86, who returned to the field to showcase her skills alongside over 20 soccer alums. The friendly match not only celebrated the legacy of Monarch soccer but also exemplified the enduring bond among past and present players. Following the game, the team and alums gathered for lunch, fostering connections and memories that will last a lifetime.
The Alumnae Softball Reunion brought together over 20 former Monarch softball players for a memorable day back on campus. The festivities kicked off in the Sobrato Center, where alumnae reconnected over delicious food, refreshing drinks, and engaging games. The reunion was filled with laughter and reminiscing, strengthening the bonds within our Monarch family.
